Potash is a generic term that includes potassium chloride, potassium magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, and sodium-potassium nitrate mixtures. In the ceramics industry, potash is also used to refer to potassium oxide. Potash, primarily in the form of potassium carbonate, was the first industrial mineral produced in the United States, and the first US patent issued was for an apparatus and process developed in 1790 for its production (Paynter, 1990). Prior to the 1860s, potash was primarily sold as an impure form of potassium carbonate produced by burning hard- wood trees and leaching the potassium salts from the ashes. The major early uses of potash include soap and glass making, dyeing fabrics, baking, and saltpeter for gunpowder. In 1859, the development of a purification process to remove the sodium and magnesium chlorides was developed for the carnallite found at Stassfurt, Germany, and mined potash became available. With the appearance of mined potash and the earlier (1840) discovery in Germany by Justus von Liebig that potash was a nutrient for crops, potash started to be used for high valued crops such as cotton and vegetables. The German potash companies quickly developed a manufacturing process for producing potassium sulfate for tobacco fertilization. German potash supplied nearly all American needs until the embargo of the First World War when imports from Germany were interrupted (Bateman, 1918). With the discovery of potash deposits in New Mexico in 1931, the United States became self-sufficient in potash. In 1962, the United States began importing potash from Canada, and two years later domestic apparent consumption began to exceed domestic production. Along with nitrogen and phosphorus, potassium is one of the three essential plant nutrients, the "K" of NPK terminology. As a result, 95% of potash production is used as plant fertilizer. In all plants, inadequate potassium diminishes growth, causes increased disease, stalk and stem breakage, and susceptibility to other stress conditions. Plants take up large quantities of potassium from the soil, and potash fertilization replaces this loss so that each new crop can be grown with the same vigor and productivity as the previous year's crop. The potassium depletion of the soil from growing repeated cotton and tobacco crops is well known in the history of southern agriculture in America. George Washington was known to have studied alternative crops that could be grown on soil that had been depleted by repeated tobacco crops. Most of the remaining 5% of potash consumption is by the chemical industry, as potassium hydroxide to produce soaps and detergents, glass and ceramic products, dyes, explosives, alkaline batteries, and medicines. Potash as chemical is used in oil field drilling mud, the aluminum recycling industry, and the electroplating industry. Additional minor uses for potassium chloride include water softener regeneration, sidewalk deicing, and salt substitution for human consumption. Potash is used in the food industry as potassium phosphate, and in production of glass products as potassium carbonate or nitrate. GEOLOGY Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust and the sixth most abundant element in seawater. It is found in silicate minerals of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines. The majority of world potash resources are found in subsurface bedded salt deposits which yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies and are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. Because of the relatively high solubility of potassium minerals, potash from salt deposits is ideal for use as fertilizers. Some potash production is from evaporation of naturally occurring brines, but the vast majority of current domestic and international production is from bedded salt deposits. Sylvite, carnallite, kainite, and langbeinite are some of the more important potassium minerals (Table 1). Sylvinite, a mixture of KC1 and NaCl is the highest grade potash ore. Carnallite can be considered a potash ore when removal of magnesium chloride is included in the beneficiation, but it can also be considered a contaminant when mining for sylvite. Potassium sulfate and potassium nitrate are typically manufactured products. Potassium sulfate is produced from mined minerals through conversion processes in Italy, Germany, and Carlsbad, NM, and from brines in southern California and at the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Natural deposits of potassium nitrate occur only in small amounts in Chile. The majority of potash-bearing bedded salt deposits are believed to have originated from the evaporation of seawater or mixtures of seawater and other brines in restricted marine basins (Schmalz, 1969). The reflux depositional model for evaporite deposition was first described in the literature in 1888 by Ochsenius. A shallow bar, or sill, across the mouth of a basin lets in a restricted flow of seawater which evaporates into a salt-precipitating brine (Fig. 1). The density of the brine at the distal end increases with increased salinity, sinks to the bottom, and sets up a reflux current of higher density brine back toward the ocean. The sill, which restricts the inflow of seawater, allows inhibited flow of evaporation-concentrated brines back to the ocean. The least soluble salts are precipitated nearer the sill, and the most soluble components come out of solution in the deeper parts of the basin. The result is a lateral facies change in a tabular-shaped deposit that is due to the salinity gradients in the brine (Fig. 2A). The asymmetrical facies distribution of the Paradox Formation (Middle Pennsylvanian) Utah (Hite, 1970), the Prairie Formation (Middle Devonian) in Saskatchewan (Holter, 1972), and the Salado Formation (Upper Permian) in New Mexico (Lowenstein, 1988), might prompt explanation by such a model. Other deposits, such as the Salina Formation (Upper Silurian) in Michigan (Matthews and Egleson, 1974), show a facies distribution that could be described as a bull's eye pattern. Although some small subbasins of high grade sylvite are found near the margins, the potash is generally located in a central part of the basin surrounded by successively less soluble facies (Fig. 2B). The subject of Specialty Silica Products could encompass a broad range of materials, some of which would be familiar to members of the Society of Mining Engineers. With the concurrence of your chairman, I have chosen to limit my remarks to synthetic materials, not including such siliceous materials as diatomaceous earth, asbestos, quartz and clays. For purposes of discussion, I have classified Specialty Silica Products into two groups -- powders and liquids -- which I will discuss in that order and which are categorized in Figure 1. The synthetic silica powders are amorphous to x-rays and are manufactured by various processes resulting in products of a wide range of physical and chemical properties, as well as functional performance and applications. Applications or functional properties are generally dependent upon such physical properties as micron-sized particles exhibiting large surface areas per unit weight and low apparent bulk density. Their presence in various systems modify surface properties. As summarized in Figure 2, they act as viscosity modifiers, flow conditioning agents, anti-slip agents, anti-blocking agents, flatting agents in surface coatings, reinforcing agents in polymers such as silicone rubber and numerous other applications. Although the various types of silicas exhibit various levels of functional performance in these end uses, they are not usually equally effective as direct replacements and I will briefly discuss the various types of materials.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the headlines, another epidemic in the United States has continued apace — the opioid epidemic. Half a million opioid overdose deaths have occurred in the United States since 1999, when the opioid epidemic began. The causes of the epidemic include the rise in prescriptions for opioid pain medications, including for work-related pain. Miners and other occupations identified as physically demanding and at higher injury risk have been found to be at increased risk for opioid overdose [1]. However, awareness of the risk factors that might lead to opioid use, the potential hazards associated with their use, and resources to prevent addiction and death can allow miners to make choices that can reduce these risks.

A spectrophotometric study of xanthate solutions alone and their mixtures with equimolar amounts of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CnTAB) has established the additivity of ultraviolet spectra (190 - 400 my) for potassium ethyl xanthate (KEtX) and C12TAB. No obvious effect of C12TAB addition on the decomposition rate of KEtX was observed. The kinetics of collector abstraction by copper, nickel and sphalerite powders were studied in 10-5 - 10-3M solutions of KEtX alone and in equimolar mixtures of KEtX and C12TAB. Presence of C12TAB caused a 2 - 3 fold increase in the amounts of xanthate (equivalent to many monolayers) abstracted by copper and, nickel powders but had no effect on the abstraction of xanthate by unactivated sphalerite. The adsorption of C12TAB itself from the mixed solutions was very low, at most ore monolayer only, and was not influenced by the nature of the solid powder used. The results are interpreted in terms of molecular associations and synergistic action of xanthates and quaternary amines.

The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves an area of approximately 860 square miles and collects and processes used water from the city of Chicago and 116 surrounding communities. As a public agency, the MSDGC -Serves a population equivalent to 10 million people which is composed of 5.5 million people and an industrial wasteload equivalent to an additional 4-1/2 million people. -Provides 400 miles of intercepting sewers and tunnels ranging in diameter from 12 inches to 24 feet. -Operates 71 miles of navigable waterways and channels conncecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico and 6,000 miles of inland waterways. -Maintains the largest water reclamation plant in the world. -Processes 1,380,000,000 of used water daily and removes approximately 1,000 dry tons of organic solids each day. -Has spent approximately 700 million dollars in capital improvements to date, and will require expenditures in excess of 3 billion dollars (including over one-half billion dollars in tunnels) to meet existing federal and state water quality standards.

The Empire concentrator currently processes magnetite ore from the Empire pit which is approaching the end of its mine life. Over the past two years plant wide tests have been run to access the plant capability of processing ore from the neighboring sister Magnetite pit. The neighboring pit presents challenges to the Empire plant due to its higher feed grade, finer liberation size and higher percent silica which require additional secondary grinding and concentrating capacity to achieve concentrate grade. Correct face pressure is critical to safe operation of a closed face TBM. If inadequate face pressure is applied, this will lead to excessive ground movement, and may result in collapse of the tunnel face. Face pressure calculations are performed manually every few meters along the tunnel alignment. With the application of a 3D ground model, ground profile information can be extracted for automatic computation. This will significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy and is adaptable to changes in design parameters. This paper will discuss the development of automatic computation techniques in extracting information from a 3D ground model.

The role of geology in coal exploration, mine planning and mine development has, in the past, been relatively small. The primary reason for this lies in. the simplicity of geologic concepts that were necessary to bring these operations about. These concepts can be briefly stated as follows: 1) coal occurs in the beds or layers and is overlain and underlain by shales, sandstone or limestone in varying porportions, 2) each coal bed has been given a name and certain quality characteristics can often be associated with a named bed and 3) coal beds (and their adjoining rocks) are often folded into broad anticlines or synclines and, in some places, displaced or faulted. In actual practice, however, these simple principles have been found wanting. Thickening, thinning, pinch outs or changes in coal quality occurred but the occurrence was apparently unpredictable and the only real solution to such problems seemed to be practice and experience. This combined with ingeneous engineering solutions have provided answers to most questions. Perhaps a more fundamental reason that geology could offer so little input to coal mining is that the thickest, most persistant and best quality coal seams followed the above stated rules fairly well. In many areas, however, such seams are now nearing exhaustion and the increased demand for clean, non-polluting, safe energy is quickly bringing a need for techniques of exploration and mining procedures that will make development of formerly unminable seams a profitable venture. For the past 20 years some considerable body of knowledge has been added to the framework of the geology of sedimentary rocks and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of these newer ideas that will be useful in solving some of the present problems of coal exploration and development.

Production forecasts derived from the medium-term schedule represent the best path forward for underground mining operations to achieve corporate and operational goals. Unforeseen circumstances, such as equipment breakdown, can cause significant deviations from established production forecasts in the short term. Such situations require timely mitigation of the effects of the deviations in order to stay as close as possible to the medium-term plan. This paper presents a deterministic mathematical formulation for short-term scheduling that addresses this challenge. The formulation is able to make up for deficits resulting from operational disruptions by minimizing deviations from medium-term production goals and medium-term activity start dates. We demonstrate this in a case study by simulating disruptions involving reduction in ore extraction capacity and development advance rate. Aside from the rescheduling capability, this formulation can help mine planners conduct analysis on the impact of various disruptions on the schedule. The formulation can help identify those conditions or disruptions that are more detrimental to the achievement of forecast targets, or otherwise. The formulation also affords mine planners the flexibility to prioritize one production goal over the other, depending on operational conditions at the mine. In the future, we seek to incorporate in the formulation respirable dust, diesel particulate matter and ventilation constraints in order to create more realistic schedules, and enhance miners’ health and safety.

A high calcium fluid-bed combustor ash has been shown to be an effective binder at dosages of 1 to 2% of the magnetite concentrate weight. Magnetite pellets 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) in diameter were produced with dry crushing strengths greater than 22.3 Newtons/pellet (5.0 pounds force/pellet), which is comparable to the results produced using conventional bentonite binder. The effectiveness of fly-ash-based binders was considerably improved when calcium chloride was added as an accelerator. Addition of calcium chloride at a rate of 0.1 to 0.2% of the total powder weight increased the strength of dried pellets by as much as 22% compared to the strength of pellets made using fly-ash without accelerators.

The mining industry needs to assure compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). Congress has enacted this legislation with the intent of preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution of the nation' s surface and groundwaters. Recognized sources of pollution such as seepage from tailings ponds, waste dumps, and contaminated effluent from mine dewatering operations pose a serious threat to adjacent groundwaters. In addition, technological innovations being implemented by the industry such as in situ leaching of low grade ore deposits may also lead to ground- water contamination. An adequate monitoring methodology designed to meet the needs of the mining industry is needed. Monitoring and control methodology devised for other man- caused sources of ground- water pollution - e. g., landfills - offer considerable promise for adaptation to the problem. The prediction of deleterious effects on groundwater quality usually requires extensive geohydrological data in addition to a thorough analysis of the mining activity that is underway or projected. If the avail- able data are adequate, mathematical models of surface and groundwater flow can be constructed that will help to predict effects on water quality. Data are inadequate to allow a realistic interpretation of pollution potentials. These data can be supplemented by computer simulation as a method to explore a number of possible environmental effects and also to develop a minimum-cost approach to identifying and gathering the additional necessary supporting data. Incorrect assessment of the important environmental considerations may, in many instances, prove to be the weakest link in analyzing the financial feasibility of a mining operation.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in current mining operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a serious hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. Requirements for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels in previous work has led to the development of a surface- operated automatic earth resistivity survey system and associated computer data processing system for military applications. Field demonstration tests of this system have resulted in successful detection of tunnels at depth-to- diameter ratios greater than ten to one. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar high-resolution earth resistivity system was designed and constructed for use as a potential means of detecting coal mine workings. The hardware and software aspects of the new system are described together with applications of the method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. Field tests are presented showing the detection of both air-filled and water-filled mine workings.

Diffuse - reflectance Fourier - transform infrared spectroscopy, Hallimond tube flotation and microelectrophoresis have been utilized to investigate the reactions involved in the adsorption-abstraction of K-amylxanthate on finely ground galena and pyrite. In order to work under well-controlled conditions both minerals were wet ground in a specially built laboratory stainless steel or iron mill. Four surface products were found to be formed on galena: monocoordinate lead xanthate, non-stoichiometric lead xanthate, dixanthogen, and amyl carbonate disulphide. Only dixanthogen was observed on pyrite after using stainless steel rods, while ferric iron xanthate was found when iron rods were utilized.

Trust in AI systems and the nature and amount of information about the system can influence decision-making. It is, therefore, crucial to understand how AI-powered monitoring systems (e.g., gas monitoring systems) influence miners’ trust and decision-making in emergency evacuation. This work focused on measuring the differences between how participants respond to a simulated underground mine emergency evacuation situation when warnings are represented as coming from a human or AI-based monitoring system. We also manipulated the amount of information participants received about the system, yielding a 2×2 between-participants survey design. The participants received an alert message about rising gas levels in a mine and provided a response on how they would react and reported their perceived safety. We also asked questions to assess their trust in, preference for AI over human-based gas monitoring systems, and whether they are willing to delegate the duties of underground gas monitoring to AI systems. The experiment results show the amount of information had a significant influence on miners’ trust and decision-making. The safety perception of participants based on age, number of children and ethnicity was significantly different from one category to another. This work provides valuable insights as the mining industry deploys AI systems to aid mine safety.

The determination of the air quality needs to dilute diesel exhaust gases to a safe level must be individually evaluated for particular cases. One such case is when diesel-powered vehicles are working in long dead- end headings with forcing auxiliary ventilation. The vehicles perform specific operations in a cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has a vital influence on environmental conditions in the working area and in the rest of the heading. Recent studies on diesel gas behavior in long headings have shown a zone of increased concentration of pollutants (accumulation) between the face and the mouth of the heading. To be able to control these accumulations of pollutants, use of the concept of planned air discharge by using the Coanda-type ducts is proposed. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate an application of computer simulation of that process. It is shown that, by planning the additional air discharge, the concentration of diesel gases can meet required limits along the heading.

The paper introduces a new rock mass cuttability classification (RMCC) system for roadheaders used in coal mines. It includes performance prediction models for both axial and transverse roadheaders, based on six parameters: uniaxial compressive strength, Cerchar abrasivity index, volumetric joint count, strike and dip of joints, joint aperture, and groundwater condition. The study validates the RMCC system through field and laboratory measurements, showing high correlation coefficients between net cutting rates and RMCC indices.

London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The impact of smoothing on the definition of ore and waste boundaries using linear estimation and conditional simulation methods is discussed. The nature of transfer functions is examined including their ability to incorporate categorical data (e.g. a dominant lithology code). An Ore Block Optimization (OBO) transfer function is presented that provides a clear guide for the mining geologist. Advantages are seen in defining stockpile cut-off grades and meeting production targets such as maximizing head grade, maximizing ore tonnes or minimizing ore loss or dilution. Each of these scenarios impacts on mine profitability and grade control.

Simulator technology has advanced to the point where the cost of mining equipment simulators is beginning to make commercial sense. Simulator-based evaluation allows operators or potential employees to be assessed in a pseudo-real environment under surface and underground mining conditions. Simulator training also allows operators to be exposed to emergency and advanced situations such as brake or steering failure or a tireblowout. ThoroughTec, of South Africa, provides simulator equipment to the mining industry. The company’s various packages of simulator products provide an unbiased evaluation score that removes human error from the assessment process. This same evaluation score is also presented at the end of normal training or refresher training sessions. In this way, the simulator helps eliminate bad habits and improve efficiencies.

A prototype remote placer drill (RPD) has been designed and successfully tested in the offshore gold district of Nome, AK. The RPD system is unique in its design and in the cooperative support that was provided during its development by industry, academia and government. The RPD was conceived as a low-cost, rapid drill sampling system for the reconnaissance of marine precious metal placer deposits. The drill functions as a counter- f lush system. It incorporates a dual wall casing and a rotating percussion bit driven by way of a drill rod through the central eductor casing by a heavy duty pneumatic rock drill. The cost of drill sampling in the exploration of marine precious metal placers has traditionally been high due to the technical difficulties imposed by the environment and the remoteness of the sampling target. The objective was to reduce capital and operating costs of a drilling program through the development of a portable system incorporating drill compoments having a high power-weight ratio that could be deployed from work vessels of opportunity. A principal design requirement was to operate the system remotely from the sea floor with only flexible connections to the surface. This includes cable for deployment and retrieval and hoses for air supply and sample recovery, thus making the drill system semi-independent of the vessel's sea-induced motion. The prototype RPD underwent full operational test off Nome, AK in late summer 1988. It was deployed from the landing door of a modified LCT vessel, and rigged for a single pass of 5 m (16.5 ft). More than 50 holes were drilled in a wide variety of bottom materials typical of the off shore Nome submerged beach placers. The prototype RPD proved to be an overall success, recovering representative samples throughout the section in all but the heavy boulder ground. Compared with a conventional drill system on board that was assigned to a production drilling system, the RPD was capable of reliably sampling moderate ground less than 6 m (20 ft) in thickness, using a smaller crew and operating in higher sea conditions.
