The Sixteen-to-One Mine was originally designed and operated using Blasthole Stoping with end slicing as the primary mining method. This method changed to Modified VCR Stoping in response to efforts to control dilution. The new method combines Blasthole Stoping with shrinkage methods, pillars, and reduced sublevel intervals to provide the most practical dilution control avail- able for low cost bulk mining.

Whisker growth during the reduction of iron ores The phenomenon of whisker growth can be observed in a number of solid-state crystallisation reactions, which, apparently, appear in6 the first instance as though they are two independent processes. From such reactions, one can find the whisker type of crystallisation on solid bodies. These examples show, that the whisker growth is neither due to certain crystal forms with predetermined temperature and pressureranges, nor to parameters, which, ad hoc, are necessary for the crystallisation. In all cases the whisker formation seems to depend on nucleation and the availability of crystallizing material in direct environment of such a nucleus, under given parameters of a system. One can generally state, that the research of whisker growth with the aim of establishing proper physical laws, to determine the foundamentals of whisker formation and whisker growth, is at present under active study. We can conclude that, although a great number of hypothesis have been proposed; no concluding theory has yet been arrived at. In the institute for ferrous metallurgy of the technical university of Aachen, research works are undertaken to find an explination to various metallurgical phenomena through help of whisker growth which was observed under varying conditions of iron ore reduction. This was possible by using refined microscopic techniques through which the whisker growth on solid oxyde substrates is detected. This refined technique combines the latest methods of surface examination with the help of stereo-scan-electron-microscope and proper and carefull preparation of surface to be stereo-scanned.

In May of 1984, it was decided that Outokumpu Oy would design and build a new nickel flotation mill to process ore from the newly discovered Enonkoski mine in eastern Finland. Since there hart peen a number of successful process charges in the existing mills, the design effort included the study and incorporation of several new developments, including all-autogenous grinding, "flash flotation", lane cell roughing, large cell cleaning and a computer-based, profit optimizing, process control system. The paper discusses the background and results of those studies, and a description of the resulting mill which will begin production in 1986.

The chemistry and structure-activity relationships for four new classes of sulfide mineral and precious metals collectors developed recently are discussed in this paper. These collector classes are alkoxycarbonyl alkyl thionocarbamates and thioureas, dialkyl (or diaryl) monothiophosphates and dialkyl monothiophosphinates. The main emphasis will be to highlight the differences between collectors and their affinities for various minerals on the basis of data on kinetics of adsorption on pure minerals, natural ore flotation and microscopy of flotation concentrates. The mechanism of interaction of these collectors with sulfide minerals is also discussed with the available data on the FTIR and solution chemistry studies.

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The new position of stone, the oldest building material, in contemporary architecture, was described to me very concisely the other day by a very distinguished avant garde architect. He said rather wryly, "Do you know, if quarried stone had only just been discovered, we would all be calling it the most miraculous of all the modern miracle building materials." His prognosis was, I believe, much more than a witty quote. It echoes the surprise and. enthusiasm with which a considerable segment of the architectural profession is rediscovering stone as a most modern building material that offers unsurpassed values in beauty and practicality - well deserving of the term "miracle".

Northside Storage Tunnel provides 500 megalitres (Ml) (130 million gallons) of storage capacity to capture stormwater/sewage overflows into Sydney Harbour. The6.6 m diameter TBM driven tunnel traverses Middle Harbour 85 m (280 ft) below sea level and through a sandstone/shale rock mass, highly disturbed by stress relief, 20 m(65 ft) beneath the base of the sediment filled palaeochannel. Target limits for inflow, groundwater drawdown and settlement of the valley beaches were achieved by systematic forward grouting from the TBM. Support included rockbolts, sets and shotcrete to carry rock loads, control block instability and spalling and to provide durability and serviceability. This paper describes the tunnelling and grouting works and their effectiveness.

Unmineable coal seams present an opportunity to sequester carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, while enhancing the recovery of coalbed methane. Injected carbon dioxide is adsorbed and stored on the coal surface while releasing methane that can be commercially recovered. Carbon sequestration, therefore, allows the utilization of unexploited mineral resources while reducing “greenhouse” gas emissions. This paper presents the feasibility, efficiency and enhanced recovery potential of coalbed methane production using carbon dioxide sequestration in the Central Appalachian Basin. The focus of research is on geological characterization of unmineable coal seams in Central Appalachia and the corresponding carbon dioxide storage capacity. Virginia Tech and Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. conducted this research under the Department of Energy’s Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership program.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. "During TBM operations, thrust jacks apply high-concentrated forces to the last installed precast segment. These loads generate a disturbed region in the precast segment under the thrust jacks, in which significant tensile stresses (defined as splitting or bursting stresses) occur perpendicular to the load direction. In addition, due to the demand of compatibility, the combined effect of TBM high-concentrated loads determines tensile spalling stresses in the area far from the loads. Therefore, local rebars or fiber reinforcement are required in these areas. This paper focuses on the study of the effects generated by high-concentrated loads exerted by TBM hydraulic jacks, mainly in terms of both spalling and splitting phenomena. Experimental tests on small-scale specimens showed that polypropylene fiber reinforcement significantly enhances both the bearing capacity and the ductility. Moreover, polypropylene fibers resulted in very effective control of compatibility cracks.INTRODUCTIONTunnel segments are generally reinforced by conventional rebars (RC segments) in order to resist the tensile stresses both at Serviceability (SLS) and Ultimate Limit States (ULS).In the two last decades, Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) has been used in many precast tunnel segments (sometimes also in combination with conventional rebars). Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is generally used for these applications even though there is a growing industry interest on macro-synthetic fibers for structural applications. Conforti et al. (2015) showed that polypropylene (PP) macro fibers can be used as shear reinforcement in both wide shallow and deep beams. Referring to precast tunnel linings, very few early experiences are reported in literature. Bonalumi et al. (2015) developed full-scale tests on tunnel elements reinforced by PP fiber reinforcement and conventional rebars (hybrid solution). The design process of segmental concrete tunnel linings generally models the standard load cases of demolding, storage, transportation, positioning and embedded ground condition. In all these stages the ring can be modelled as simple curved beam elements (having a height equal to the lining thickness and a width equal to the segment length). During these loading conditions, flexural demand is generally limited; thus, in case of conventional RC elements, a rather low ratio of longitudinal curved rebars is usually adopted (?s of about 0.2-0.3%)."

This work focuses on the operational and safety issues associated with karst voids in large opening underground mines. Issues include water inrush, structural instability, and engineering uncertainty in these environments. Coupled with the fracturing prevalent in folded sedimentary rocks, karst voids are complex and challenging ground-control risks. Traditional methods of predicting karst void locations, such as probe drilling, are impeded by the inconsistent spatial distribution and variable sizes of the features as reported by Li et al. (J Rock Mechan Geotech Eng:232–242, 2010) and Hassan et al. (Procedia Chem 19:737–742, 2016). Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that transmits radio waves into a medium and subsequently detects reflected waves via a receiver. The travel time and energy of received signals are then processed and interpreted. The difference in conductivity and dielectric permittivity between limestone and open karst cavities causes strong reflections. GPR is frequently used as a geophysical surveying technique in several industries; however, there is a lack of published research on underground mining GPR applications as reported by Zhao et al. (2015a; Geophys J Int:62–71, 2015b) and Eskelinen and Pellinen (Constr Build Mater:888–898, 2018). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the use of GPR in an underground stone mine and to discuss the importance of karst void detection ahead of mining.

Good afternoon, fellow members of the international mining community. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this special three-day, international gathering, and to join with you in honoring one of my very good friends, Doug Fuerstenau. It couldn't be more fitting to have this kind of event to mark Doug's 60th birthday. You know, in addition to his faculty position at the University of California in Berkeley, Doug is a member of the Board of Directors of our Homestake Mining Company. So it is a double pleasure for me to help pay tribute to one of the outstanding academicians of the mining industry as well as a man with whom I work closely in running Homestake. I have been asked to talk about "The Future of Precious Metals," but I will concentrate my remarks on gold. Since the theme of this Symposium is "Challenges in Mineral Processing," what I'm going to talk about is a challenge that relates especially to a major problem faced by those of us who process ores to recover gold. I noted that in the Scope of this Symposium, it stated: "the mineral industry is currently facing many challenges to improve the economics, operating efficiencies and environmental concerns of the mineral processing system." I couldn't agree more with that statement. I think that a need exists for us to address this situation as it involves gold. And who better to consider this than the worldwide leaders of mineral processing research here assembled. I start with the premise that we need a new method for cyanide use or a chemical to replace sodium cyanide entirely. The hostile nature of industrial autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG) mill operation necessitates the need for robust and reliable online measurements. Mill slurry density is regarded as a critical variable and requires a suitable range for grinding efficiency. In this work, mill acoustic sensing of five different slurry densities (50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 wt.% solids) was investigated using a laboratory-based AG/SAG mill. The results showed that slurry density of 70-80 wt.% solids gave the highest mass of -75μm particles and similar acoustic intensity. The mill acoustical level increased continuously coupled with energy reduction as a function of increasing slurry density, an indication of potential realtime measurement.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

P.J. Ehret By and large, I agree with many of the precepts discussed in the Saperstein paper. I believe there is much more that can be done on the local level to involve both government and planning in the mine permit review process. Admittedly, much can be done to improve discussion between the state regulatory authority, local authorities, and mine operators. However, I strongly disagree, as suggested in the paper's conclusion, that such a system, as outlined in Saperstein's paper, could result in a reduction of review time or a lowering in the cost of permitting. The implementation of such a system by its very nature would only add a new level of bureaucracy to an already cumbersome process. This system, in my opinion, would only add to the cost of permitting and the time necessary to obtain a permit. Admittedly, it would achieve the result of adding local influence into the permitting process, but at what off-setting cost? It has been my professional first-hand experience and observation in the permitting and lands unsuitable processes to note that under the present system, local governments that do feel they have a stake in local mines and actively ad¬vocate their position (not simply comment), have had significant input into the conduct of mining and reclamation plans in their areas. Mining companies that mine in these areas are aware of local interests and attitudes, and do consider them in their plans. Simply put, local governments that want to get involved and want to play significant roles can and do. Those that do not advocate a position or have no input to offer do not. Although the present system is not as direct in effect in regard to local control as Saperstein's, it does work. It does so without the red tape that would result from developing miniature regulatory authorities in every county in which mining occurs. Although local input is important, there are many more sections of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) than Sections 508(a)(8) and 522(a)(3)(A) that also are important. It appears Saperstein's paper may overindulge these sections. An additional specific comment is made in regard to the statement that while local areas benefit from mining (wages, salaries, and purchases), they also endure environmental deterioration caused by mining affects. It is believed that the whole purpose for which SMCRA and its resulting regulations were enacted and developed was so mining would not be permitted if significant environmental deterioration could occur. Therefore, it could be argued that this point under current law is moot. Reply by L.W. Saperstein P.J. Ehret writes in a reasoned and rational way and makes some good points. The arguments in favor of central control of the designation process reflect all of the benefits associated with central environmental control: consistency of enforcement, efficiency of operation, ease of communication among enforcing agency, etc. Nonetheless, the decision to mine or not to mine is a landuse decision which, in substance, is similar to the decision to build a shopping mall, a new highway, or a housing subdivision. Although, state and federal governments' interests in the protection of public welfare are real and are expressed properly in mining laws and mining enforcement agencies (OSM, Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals, etc). I continue to maintain that the permitting and designation processes should originate with local government, which is in keeping with the American tradition of delegation of the land-use decision to local or regional government.

"Composite sprayed concrete lining (SCL), consisting of two layers of permanent sprayed concrete separated by a layer of spray-applied waterproofing membrane, represents the latest development in SCL tunneling, but presents several challenges to designers. This paper aims to address the following issues: (1) how to simulate composite action, (2) behavior of a composite SCL tunnel, and (3) how to utilize composite action to achieve lining thickness efficiency. It firstly sets out the background to the composite SCL concept, and then presents a strategy for numerical investigation. The main part of the paper is the presentation and discussion of the simulation results, focusing on the lining deformation, load sharing and the safety margin of both linings. Interface stresses are also examined. It is found that significant secondary lining thickness reduction may be achieved by utilizing composite action. Challenges for the design of composite SCL tunnels are briefly discussed at the end. INTRODUCTION Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnelling has seen rapid development over the last twenty years in the UK (Su 2013). One of these developments has been the replacement of traditional sheet membrane and cast in situ secondary lining with innovative spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining system, which has been adopted in recent major projects, such as Crossrail (Pickett 2013), and brings many benefits to the construction (Dimmock et al. 2013). The combination of sprayed primary lining, spray applied waterproofing membrane and sprayed secondary lining is perceived to provide a structurally efficient lining system that outperforms the traditional lining system, which consists of sacrificial primary lining, sheet waterproofing membrane and cast in situ secondary lining. The claimed benefits in structural performance arises from the composite action between the sprayed primary and secondary linings via the spray applied waterproofing membrane, which produces a much stiffer cross-section and therefore a more efficient use of materials. Early investigations on the design of composite SCL tunnels were carried out without (1) definite and reliable long-term interface parameters, (2) a verified numerical modelling technique, or (3) consideration of different stress histories between primary and secondary linings (Thomas and Pickett 2011, Marcher et al. 2011). This paper reports the findings from a numerical parametric study on a typical composite SCL tunnel with varied secondary lining thickness. The results show that the true benefit of composite lining arises from the optimisation of the lining thickness (stiffness) ratio between the primary and secondary linings to achieve secondary lining safety and thickness efficiency at the same time."

Polish power industry is based on brown and hard coal combustion and transferring the heat into electric power. Over 99% of lignite is used as a fuel in power plants. Lignite is mined on in open pits. Therefore very deep (for example 300 m in Belchatow open pit) excavations having great volume are formed. Thus such type of mining has the impact on land degradation. In order to reduce this effect, at the earliest possible moment the cap rocks are dumped in the pit but at the safe distance from the mining face. Due to the big amounts of lignite delivered to the power plant, there are shortages of solids for filling the pit after completing the mining operations. Geotechnical properties of dumped combustion by-products depend on the lignite type, combustion technology and ashes haulage methods. The paper presents lignite combustion methods used in Poland and their impact on properties of ashes and methods of their transport determining the parameters of dumped wastes. Geotechnical, physical and chemical test results concerning transport and deposition of hydraulically active ashes from the Belchatów power plant are presented. The critical role of geotechnical properties in selecting the deposition technology and post mining management of open pit excavations was showed. The importance of filling the post-mining spaces for restoration the useful function of brown fields and for neutralization of negative effects of mining activity, was underlined.

Any type of agitation within a confined vessel is primarily concerned with two parameters: 1) A level of agitation describing the homogeneity of the constituents (whether it be suspension or mixing) and, 2) the energy efficiency with which this level of agitation is accomplished. The following is an attempt to present a solution to the problem of adequately defining and optimizing these properties. First included is a discussion of the application of good design practices to the determination of a mechanically efficient shape to the blade elements of the propeller. These practices, excluding several appropriate modifications, have been known, but not well understood, in aircraft fluid mechanics for a number of years. Secondly, having optimized the direct impartation of energy to the medium being agitated, attention is turned to one of the more perplexing phenomena of multi-phase systems - definition and prediction of agitation levels. The result of recent study and testing is a method of scaling which the authors feel provides a lucid understanding of governing physical parameters within the agitator itself, allowing one to scale up and down with confidence.

Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

Truck haulage costs form a major part of the total mining costs in hard rock open pit, mining operations. In order to minimize these costs one has to - determine the optimal truck fleet (type, size and number of trucks), and. simultaneously - determine the optimal organization of running the haulage system, i.e. especially select the optimal dispatching strategy in order to ensure maximal utilization of the trucks, and simultaneously - establish a reliable maintenance and servicing system to guarantee maximal availability.
