In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? The new 9300 TPD sinter plant being built for China Steel Corporation is incorporating the latest computer technology for plant control systems. The control system will use a central computer and distributed micro-processors to control instrument loops and switching logic in the blending yard and sintering plant. All plant functions, including combustion and fan controls, will be controlled by remote microprocessors located throughout the plant, and connected by a communications link to the centrally located computer and control room. The design, programming, construction and operation of a microprocessor based control system presents new challenges to the control engineer. With microprocessors in the control system, more power exists in the individual control loop and many supervisory functions may be added at the loop level. The specification of the microprocessor system and the resolution of hardware design and control system design can lead to development of powerful systems capable of higher level control and optimization functions

Explosions in underground coal mines have been a serious safety concern since the advent of mining; despite significant technological advances, they are still occurring. Parameters such as barometric pressure, geological changes, and changes in ventilation can contribute to an explosion. These factors can be monitored with available and developing technologies to create algorithms that predict when explosions are more likely to occur. This paper reviews current underground atmospheric monitoring systems and related regulations around the world. In addition, suggestions for improvement and implications for explosion prevention are discussed.

Attapulgite and sepiolite are the clay minerals used to thicken ionically contaminated watzrs in the preparation of drilling fluids. They are nonsweliing clays that can be dispersed and reflocculated by mechanical means to increase the viscosity of fresh water and salt and gypsum contaminated waters. Those gelled in fresh water do not become excessively thick when contaminated with high salt concentrations or polyvalent cations encountered during drilling. Gels formed exhibit thixotropy and yield pseudoplastic rheological behavior due to the particle interactions and mechanical interferences of the flocculated gel structure.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. Discussion by J. Parker Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa(4000 and 7000psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic'? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Were tests run to find out how that rock responded to the addition of moisture, from sprays or from humid air? Did moisture weaken the rock? Did it cause the rock to expand quickly, thus to induce internal compressive stress? How can the near-vertical cutters, as shown in the photographs, be attributed to primarily horizontal stresses? Did the cutters follow any particular pattern in the development panels, which might be related to a particular stress pattern? For example, did they always appear alongside the stiffest pillar? Or always along the northwest rib? Was there any evidence of the pillars and entries "rotating" under the influence of differential horizontal stresses? How much did the entries and pillars rotate as the longwall face approached and passed? After rooffalls, did the openings assume shapes which would indicate a preferred shape in that stressfield and geology? Did crosscuts always survive without damage, as shown in the sketch?

The integration of sustainability principles into day-to-day minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies. A proposed methodology to achieve integration of sustainability at the operational level will direct the systematic and rigorous identification and characterisation of sustainability issues in an operation. The methodology allows different approach strategies for assessment, comprehensive accounting of sustainability indicators and has the ability to identify sustainability issues which may have significant business implications that cannot be identified using traditional analysis processes."

Many concerns have been expressed worldwide regarding the use of diesel equipment in underground mines due to the potential health risks associated with diesel particulate matter (DPM). In assessing the risk to the health of miners and designing control strategies for DPM, it is important to know the concentration of DPM in the working areas of a mine. In some mines, significant stratification occurs due to the characteristics of the diesel exhaust, affecting exposure and the ability to measure DPM concentrations accurately. This study outlines some of the concentration profile data obtained during sampling at three mines where diesels were employed. Mine #1 (a gold mine) employed large openings in which a diesel-powered roof bolter was used. Mines #2 and #3 are both room-and-pillar operations with varying conditions. Mine #2 is an experimental mine where two stationary diesels were utilized for sampling purposes, while Mine #3 is a traditional evaporite operation using two mobile diesel vehicles for section haulage. These field studies indicated that some level of stratification occurred in all the mines, but the stratification was not as pronounced in the case of Mine #2 due to the complex pattern of exhaust emissions generated by the vehicles. The stratification seemed to depend on the distance from the vehicle, the mine air velocity, whether the vehicles were moving or stationary, and whether the exhaust was diluted by equipment design features. The concentration of DPM was generally higher at samplers located near the roof and lower at samplers located near the floor. However, this was not found in all cases. This paper provides conclusions on how knowledge of stratification patterns can be utilized in sampling and control of DPM in mine atmospheres.

The recent heightening of environmental issues has forced more and more mining operations to focus on developing new methods to control dust problems encountered at their concentrate dryers, stock piles, tailings ponds and during the loading, transportation and unloading of their products. The development of dust control agents requires a quick reliable and most of all accurate method to evaluate the performance and to optimize the formulation of these products in the laboratory, thus avoiding expensive field trial evaluations. This paper gives an overview of the industry requirements for specialty dust control agents, application techniques and current laboratory evaluation procedures. The paper will also outline the development of a unique dust suppression testing apparatus called the "Dust Box, which is used to evaluate chemical dust suppressants at the laboratory level. Laboratory results from two test programs on different substrates are presented in the paper.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. Mining engineers are ready to take a big step into a new field-oil mining. To understand the subject, one must look at the world's oil supply and demand as well as petroleum technology successes and failures. The US has an abundance of solid hydrocarbon and uranium energy resources, but 75% of its energy for industry, transportation, manufacturing, and space heating comes from liquid petroleum and natural gas. So there are increasing efforts to discover new oil reserves; today the number of drilling rigs operating in the US is at an all-time high. But with 80% of the world's wells already located in the US and Canada, good new exploration prospects are difficult to find. The cost of drilling deep new wells has also greatly increased. The US faced a similar situation in the early 1950s, when primary oil production declines began. During that time, the petroleum researcher introduced secondary recovery techniques such as water flooding and gas injection. This increased the average amount of extractable oil from discovered US reservoirs from 17% to 33%. Production soared and the world petroleum price remained stable until the end of the 1960s. Secondary recovery techniques were then supplemented by tertiary oil recovery technologies-increasing sweep efficiency with such things as CO2 injection-that are, so far, only partially successful in most petroleum fields. Even so, these technologies could raise cumulative recovery expectations to 35-38%. The "lost" oil in depleted US reservoirs equals 48 km3 (300 billion bbl) of conventional oil, or 12 times the current recoverable reserve base. At the present rate of US consumption-1 km3/a or 6 billion bbl/a-this is enough to run the US for 50 years without importing any oil. Moreover, there are 16-24 km3 (100-150 billion bbl) of as-yet unrecoverable heavy oil and tar sands in the US.

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

A packed column (or static tube) flotation system is an innovative technology which utilizes a controlled dispersion reagent scheme and a new machine. The unique aspect of the machine is its packed-bed design permitting an unlimited froth bed height with countercurrent water washing for effective processing of fine particles. In operation, the conditioned ore slurry is fed into the middle section of the column where separation processes begin. Air, introduced at the bottom of the packed column, contacts the hydrophobic particles and floats them off continuously as the feed is added, while the gangue sinks to the base of the column. The system functions efficiently because intimate particle-bubble contact is achieved by the packing design which has no moving parts and requires no ancillary air-bubble generator. Other attractive features of the packed column flotation include high throughput, low power requirements, and simple control. Results from laboratory and pilot plant tests of this system show remarkable improvements over current industrial practices on a wide variety of ores and coals.

Introduction Gravity-based coal/mineral preparation plants must be operated to yield products of a quality satisfactory to existing markets. However, because of historic control problems, recovery is frequently sacrificed to achieve quality, resulting in losses of valuable product. Plant control has ranged from intuitive in-plant spot quality judgments made by various operators to gross methods involving such devices as density gauges, floats, grabsample on-the-spot sink/float tests, etc. Millions of tons of quality coal/minerals are lost to refuse each year, because of the historic lack of a continuous and dependable control system. The result is serious economic, as well as environmental, losses. While the economic losses are obvious, the less obvious environmental ones, in the case of coal, result from the misplacement of more ignitable quality fuel to refuse banks. Until recently, a control system capable of supplying a market-grade coal/mineral product, while continuously minimizing product losses to refuse, has been technologically unavailable. Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) The first Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) originated in the late 1970s as an innovative idea and ultimately resulted in Leonard Patent No. 4,345,994 issued on August 24, 1982. In a classic example of successful university basic research, the patent was followed by two US Department of Energy (DOE) merit awards for fundamental optimization research at the University of Kentucky, a number of publications, a successful applied research program (underwritten by SENTREX at Irvine, CA) and field tests at the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company Keystone Mine near Indiana, PA. The system is now operational and is marketed by SENTREX as the SENTREX Performance Monitor. A diagram of the system is shown in Fig. 1. This system relies on metal detection as the basic tracing medium. Since it is capable of tracing particles as fine as 0.19-in., the system is ideal for coarse coal/ mineral cleaning processes. Basically, the CMWTSPM records the distribution of synthetic coal/mineral particles, of known size and specific gravity, between product and refuse output streams of coal/mineral washing, gravity-concentrating processes. For any given particle size, surface area and shape are constant. The particles are [ ] designed to find their way into the center of their respective inprocess specific gravity/size streamlines. The system will yield a complete partition curve to show the percentage of misplacement for any selected size/specific-gravity particle fraction, thereby providing a point-to-point insight into process failure. When used to evaluate operational processes, this full partition curve is far more diagnostic than the simplifying, derivative, single index number known as the Ep value. The Ep value is commonly used for convenience to represent symmetrical partition curves, but, if the actual partition curve is non-symmetrical, use of the Ep value can result in serious diagnostic error. While the Ep is useful in design and for rapid performance evaluation and process adjustment, the full partition curve is by far the more diagnostic. It will provide insight into the behavior of particulate flow, through non-symmetry, as a means to highlight potential systemic failures. Performance of the process is measured and improved by determining the extent of particle misplacement and by making timely adjustments to the unit to reduce the misplacement. Used in this manner, the CMWTSPM is not only a long needed processing control monitor, but it is also a very powerful diagnostic tool which, in the hands of skilled operators, has

The subject of strata control in mining can be approached from both static or loading concepts or from dynamic or impulsive loading concepts. The fracture process itself appears to be primarily a dynamic process as is the gross creation of fractures through the use of impact, stress wave passage or in more general terms, the use of explosives. This paper presents experimental results which indicate that the understanding of the fracture behavior of rock that has been, established in the open literature is not always appropriate. In particular, the results of this experimental program have shown very interesting differences between the formation of fractures in rock and the formation of fractures in other materials such as metals and plastics which are often used as models for rock behavior studies Fracture patterns and causes of dynamic fracturing in various rock and artificial materials are presented.

The syngenetic, metamorphic water, and source bed concept theories of ore deposition proposed by Anton Gray, C, Lo Knight and others, to explain ores in sedimentary rocks, are challenged on the basis of a survey of the literature and personal observation, A hydrothermal origin for the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt deposits is indicated by the presence of post-Roan age igneous rocks and post-gabbro mineralization, the wide distribution of ore in the various Lower Roan lithologic types, and the zoning of the copper-iron sulphlde minerals and minor elements The proposal by Gray and Knight that igneous rocks are not favorable as guides to nonferrous metal deposits, and Gray's hypothesis that the redistribution of connate waters and their dissolved metals by metamorphic processes was responsible for the emplacement of ores, are rejected as contrary to field evidence, The absence of exposed potential igneous source rocks is shown to be an invalid argument for the proponents of any syngenetic hypothesis, The common association of ore deposits with calc-alkaline intrusive rocks and their derivatives is, however, demonstrated to be convincing evidence that an exploration program based upon a magmatic theory of origin, would have found most of the important known non-ferrous metal deposits of the world, It is urged that prospecting be continued on the sound basis of accumulated knowledge of the lithologic and structural facts surrounding known ore deposits.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. This case history really started during the tail end of WWII when two Navy men, both Colorado School of Mines graduates, got together in Washington, DC, while they were assigned to the Office of Navy Petroleum Reserves doing some of the first aerial magnetometer work ever done on a practical oil exploration basis over the offshore area of the Gulf Coast. When separated from Naval Service active duty in 1946, the two men, Walter E. Heinrichs, Jr., and Robert E. Thurmond, tried, unsuccessfully, to form a commercial air magnetometer business. Later they got together again in Jerome, AZ, with Newmont Mining's early geophysical exploration endeavors from 1947 to 1949. Subsequent to the Newmont experience, they jointly proposed a specific mining geophysical exploration and development program to Herbert Hoover, Jr., then president of United Geophysical Co. of Pasadena, CA. Mr. Hoover, in consultation with his father Herbert Hoover and others of his staff at United, particularly Edwin G. Schempf, executive vice president, and Raymond A. Peterson, vice president of research, agreed to establish the proposed program under United's auspices, to be headquartered at Tucson, AZ. The primary objective would be to practically test and develop various mining geophysical methods and techniques while exploring particularly for base metals in the general area of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico.

Grefco Inc. operates two diatomite mines in the western Santa Ynez Mountains. The larger of the two mines, the Palos Colorados Mine, is located approximately seven miles southeast of Lompoc. The Miguelito Mine is located about two miles south of Lompoc on the west side of the Miguelito Canyon. Diatomite from the Palos Colorados and Miguelito mines is trucked to the Grefco plant at Lompoc for processing (Figure 1). HISTORY Grefco, Inc. evolved from the originating Dicalite Company which in 1929 began operations at the Walteria plant in the Palos Verdes Hills south of Los Angeles. In 1942 Dicalite leased the Palos Colorados mine at Lompoc. In 1944 the Dicalite Company was purchased by Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.
