Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.

The floatability of a typical boron mineral, colemanite (Ca2B6O11.5H2O), is shown to be hindered by the presence of montmorillonite type clay minerals. The clay is found to act in the form of slime coating. The mechanism of slime coating is investigated using pure colemanite and clay and their mixtures with an anionic reagent in a microflotation cell. Adsorption, flotation, solubility, zeta potential and scanning electron microscope studies reveal that slime coating occurs through electrostatic attraction. It is possible to minimize the effect of slime coating either at high surfactant concentration or at high pH values.

Bauxite, dolomite, and magnesite are natural occurring minerals that are used extensively in the manufacture of refractory products. In addition, magnesia produced from seawater or brine finds its way into the production of refractories. All of these materials must be processed at high temperatures, 1500°C to 2200°C, to produce an intermediate raw material (refractory grain) , which can then be used in the final manufacture of refractory bricks and shapes. During the last 20 years, the major supply of refractory bauxite has been from Guyana, and at times the annual production has ranged up to 1,000,000 tons per year. More recently, China has become a major source of refractory grade bauxite by supplying over 300,000 TPY. Other sources of bauxite in lesser quantities have been Surinam, Brazil, and the U.S.A. During 1980, the estimated available world tonnage amounted to slightly more than 1,300,000 tons. The bulk of this material has been calcined in rotary kilns except for some of the Chinese production, which was treated in shaft kilns. Recent work has indicated that an excellent product can be produced in the Nichols Shaft Kiln using much less fuel than the conventional rotary kiln. Details of the Nichols Shaft Kiln will be provided later in this paper.

The in-situ FTIR/IRS technique has been used to spectroscopically characterize interfacial water near a hydrophilic surface. Interfacial water was examined spectroscopically over known distances from the surface of a silicon single crystal by appropriate design of the geometry and optics of the internal reflection system. The in-situ FTIR/IRS spectra of interfacial water were examined by consideration of the 0 -H stretching region (3000 -3800 cm-1) associated with the vibrational spectra of water. The broad peak: in this region which describes the interfacial water structure was deconvoluted in order to isolate the overlapping spectral features of the interfacial water. Preliminary spectral results indicate the prevalence of an ice-like water structure (-3200 cm-!) at the silicon surface. Importantly, it appears that the interfacial water structure may extend a considerable distance (several tens of molecular layers) from the surface as established from the spectroscopic depth profile measurements which show that the free OH stretch at 3600 cm-1 becomes very significant at distances from the surface exceeding 400 nm.

California was a major talc-producing State until the late 1980s when production from the deposits in the Death Valley area ceased because of a number of factors which included pressure to discontinue mining in and around Death Valley National Monument, and health concerns affecting markets for tremolitic talc. The states of Montana and Texas now account for slightly more than half of U.S. talc production. Deposits in an area encompassing southern Death Valley and extending east into the Kingston Range were formed by contact metamorphism of carbonate beds in the Precambrian Crystal Spring Formation next to Precambrian diabase sills. These deposits contain ore ranging from high-purity, fine-grained talc to platy, tremolitic talc with high brightness. Deposits of tremolitic talc and talc schist in the Silver Lake District in San Bernardino County resulted from metamorphism of Precambrian carbonate beds intruded by granitic plutons. Northeast in Esmeralda County, Nevada hydrothermal alteration related to Late Jurassic plutons caused talc replacement of Precambrian to Early Cambrian dolomite. A hydrothermal origin is also indicated for talc deposits in the lnyo Range just north of the Death Valley District where bodies of unusually pure talc occur in Paleozoic lime- stone near Jurassic granitic plutons. Talc is now mined from a deposit in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range southeast of Sacramento where quartz-mica schist of the Permian Calaveras Formation has been hydrothermally altered to talc. Replacement of magnesite of the Precambrian Allamoore Formation produced talc deposits mined in the Allamoore District of west Texas. This dark-gray talc of low iron content with carbon- aceous material and dolomite is ideally suited for use in ceramics where it makes a white product when fired. Small bodies of platy light-pink to white talc suitable for use as an extender in paint are also mined in this district. In the Llano District of central Texas talc has replaced impure carbonate rocks and serpentinite. All Montana talc production is from deposits in the southwestern part of the State that formed by Precambrian hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marble. This alteration produced material with high purity that ranges from very fine-grained, massive talc to coarser grained, foliated talc. Markets include pitch control in paper, paint, cosmetics, ceramics, rubber and plastics. In southwestern and northeastern Oregon, talc has replaced serpentinite in the vicinity of Mesozoic plutons. Soapstone for carving is mined from a southwestern Oregon deposit. Deposits of similar origin occur in central and northwestern Washington.

Approximately since 1925, the phenomena of grinding and classification of minerals with screens have been studied. In the U.S. iron ore mining operations located in the so-called “Mesabi Iron range,” magnetite processing plants have made progress in the application of high-frequency screens that have allowed them to process low-grade Taconite ores and successfully achieve the economic benefit of these minerals. In the particular case of magnetite minerals disseminated in the siliceous matrix, the main objective is to reduce the generation of particles called “middlings” with high silica contents. Commonly the primary challenge of the metallurgical task is to achieve high recoveries and iron concentrates with low impurities. To achieve this, several studies and industrial applications have shown success in this regard and not only in iron ores, but also in other minerals around the world. The study described in this paper attempts to describe some key aspects that helped develop an effective solution and list the benefits associated with this modern process design by using industry-proven technologies for minerals in Chile that have similar characteristics to the minerals of the iron belt in the United States.

Methane drainage is a mature technology, now commonly practiced in many highly productive underground coal mines throughout the world. Universally, the practice of pre-draining methane will continue to grow as near-surface coal seams become depleted and mining operations are forced to exploit deeper reserves. These deeper coal reserves inherently have higher gas contents. In addition, increases in productivity and extraction rates have caused higher methane liberations per unit of time. As the cost of providing ventilation air increases, the economic justification for implementing a methane drainage program becomes apparent.

The purpose of this work is to conduct a preliminary analysis of the spatial variations of the thickness of lignite layers in the area of the Amyndeo mine, and to estimate the lignite reserves of the mine. The reserves are estimated by the method of the Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. The experimental semivariograms are evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two possible theoretical models for the experimental semivariogram (the exponential and a novel Spartan model) are compared and discussed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging precision. The performance of kriging interpolation is discussed in terms of cross validation measures.

Their size, though, makes them difficult to maintain. Recently, G&S Engineering Services used an Enerpac synchronous hydraulic lifting system to lift a 3.2-t(3,500-st) dragline at the Curragh Mine in Queensland, Australia’s Bowen Basin.

When overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in openpit coal mines, the use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play. However, stability in the highwalls is always a major safety concern during such mining. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that highwall mining operators follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

The usage of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is increasing rapidly throughout the Mining Industry, especially in the Industrial Minerals sector. GIS provides an efficient and robust link between spatial (often CADD) and tabular (database/spreadsheet) components. Mineral economists and corporate planners employ GIS to perform market analyses, to source raw materials, and to schedule and monitor deliveries to customers. Exploration and acquisition groups apply spatial analysis to identify high quality resources that meet economic guidelines. Mining regulators and environmental affairs departments expedite and monitor permitting, environmental compliance, and best management practices reclamation through GIS data management and Electronic Permitting. Operations staffs monitor overburden removal, material extraction, quality control, and stockpile volumes with GIS. This paper summarizes the many aspects of GIS in Industrial Minerals. It also introduces and addresses issues and concerns commonly encountered during a mining GIS implementation.

On the 2nd of June 2007 SELI S.p.A. started the excavation of Beles Tailrace Tunnel (Ethiopia). The new 8,07 m diameter DS Universal TBM utilized for the tunnel excavation was manufactured by SELI S.p.A. and allowed the installation of 30 cm thick concrete lining, contemporaneously with the excavation of 7,200 m of tunnel. The greatest part of the tunnel alignment was excavated in hard and sound basal-tic rocks. The paper describes the main steps of the tunnelling operations which led to a remarkably rapid excavation, with a peak production of 36 m / day and a final break-through achieved 46 days ahead of the contractual deadline. Furthermore the paper describes the work and logistic organization that was set up to efficiently perform the mechanized excavation in the very remote area of the project.

Mining lignite in the Gulf Coast often requires some interaction with shallow ground water system. Suggestions for determining ground water data and analysis requirements for regulatory compliance are given. Simple methods for estimating mine inflow seepage, ground water level declines, and changes in ground water chemistry, which may result from mining, are discussed. The mining of lignite often results in interaction with shallow ground water systems. An evaluation of the interaction is required as input to mine permitting and engineering. Your evaluation will proceed more smoothly and produce more meaningful results with some planning prior to performing your evaluation. The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise. Conventional Smelting Practice Conventional copper smelting practice varies from smelter to smel¬ter, but generally consists of some or all of the following unit processes: roasting, smelting, converting, and fire refining. Roasting. Copper sulfide concentrates can be smelted directly or after an initial roasting step. Roasting is used in some smelters because roasting prior to smelting increases smelting capacity, less energy is required to melt hot roaster calcines than wet sulfide concen¬trates, roaster off gases are high in Sot concentration, 5-15% SO2, and some volatile impurities are removed from the concentrate prior to smelting. However, many smelters do not use roasters, because the problems associated with handling hot dry calcines outweigh the advantages mentioned. Concentrate roasting is performed in multiple hearth or fluid bed roasters. If the moisture is low, roasting can be performed autogenously, usually at 500-600°C. High roasting temperatures are avoided because excess oxidation of the iron compounds may lead to magnetite formation. Magnetite is detrimental to reverb operation because mag¬netite can combine with refractory minerals to form a highly viscous slag. This slag prohibits efficient matte-slag separation and leads to excessive copper losses. Also, magnetite can settle through the matte layer, deposit on the furnace bottom, and consequently reduce furnace capacity. Roasting is carried out only on sulfide concentrates prior to smelt¬ing in reverb or electric furnaces. For smelting processes, such as the flash and continuous that rely on the exothermic heat of oxidation of the sulfur minerals, roasting is not practiced. Reverberatory Smelting. The predominate copper smelting fur¬nace for the past 50 years has been the reverb. These furnaces are typically 100-120 ft long, 30-35 ft wide, and 12-15 ft high. A typical furnace layout is shown in Fig. 2. Refractory brick linings cover all internal surfaces of the furnace. Originally the flame was directed to reverberate or reflect off the furnace ceiling and melt the feed material. Current practice is to direct the flame down the furnace length to melt the concentrate. A method of charging the concentrates or calcines, generally along the side walls to minimize refractory erosion, is incorporated in the furnace design. The copper concentrates, calcines, and fluxes charged into the reverb undergo a series of complicated reactions as the temperature of the mixture increases. The reaction of the iron and copper sulfides with the oxygen in the furnace produces a molten Cu25-FeS mixture called matte. Copper smelting metallurgy is based on the fact that sulfur has a greater affinity for copper than for iron and most other common metals. Therefore, in a system containing copper, the copper will preferentially remain as a sulfide compound until all of the other metals have been oxidized. The oxidized metals combine with silica to form a silicate slag that floats on the matte and is removed from the system. Reverberatory furnace smelting chemistry can be approximated by the following chemical equations: FeS2 + O2 - FeS+ SO2 (1) The formation of FeS ensures that any copper present other than as sulfides will be reduced by the relationship: CuO2 + 2FeS + O2 - CuS + 2FeO+SO2 (2) or 2Cu +FeS - Cu2S + Fe (3) As the molten charge travels down the furnace, continued oxida¬tion of the iron minerals and sulfurization of the copper minerals occurs. When all of the copper has been converted to sulfides, the iron sulfides can then be further oxidized as: FeS + (3)2 O2 FeO + SiO2 (4) The FeO reacts with the silica added as flux in the furnace charge. A simplified equation is: FeO + SiO2 -FeO SiO2 (5) The iron silicate slag formed is skimmed from the surface at the end opposite the burners. The copper content of reverb slag is usually less than 0.6% Cu and is discarded. Matte is removed along the side wall and is taken to the converter for oxidation of the remaining sulfur and iron. The main objectives in reverberatory smelting are to produce a molten Cu2S-FeS matte containing 30-60% Cu and a throwaway slag. Production of matte permits complete conversion of all copper minerals into copper sulfides, which can migrate because of specific gravity differences, through the lighter slag layer. Also, the molten matte droplets collect the noble metals, gold and silver, as the matte settles in the furnace. The large settling area of the furnace provides enough separation time to produce a low grade slag, which can be discarded without further processing. High heat losses are associated with reverberatory smelting be¬cause of the large volume of gases sweeping through the furnace. Therefore, an outside source of heat is required to keep the smelting reaction going. Natural gas, fuel oil, or pulverized coal are used as this heat source.

Introduction Men like physical power because it gives control over nature and over other men. Physical power comes in two common forms: explosive and non-explosive. In both forms, the most powerful devices yet invented make use of nuclear energy: on the one hand, the hydrogen or fusion bomb, and, on the other hand, a nuclear power plant. For some nations, nuclear power offers a measure of independence not otherwise available in a time of diminishing and unevenly allocated fossil fuels. Consequently, it has great attraction. Unfortunately, the application of nuclear energy (especially fission energy) to either explosive or electrical power entails a singular risk, that of injury from ionizing radiation, both natural and induced; this risk is found in all stages of the nuclear-fuel cycle, from mining of fissionable materials to the disposal of wastes produced in the "burning" of nuclear fuels. The health costs of nuclear power were not fully assessed in the early stages of the development of nuclear technology and some of them were not properly guarded against, either in the USA, which led the world into the nuclear age, or in Canada, which followed an independent path. What I shall do in this paper is to sketch the history of nuclear regulation in our two countries, to point out what I consider similarities and differences, and to suggest that regulatory history, as perceived by a concerned public, has a great deal to do with what is possible today and probable tomorrow, in other words, with public acceptance or rejection of the nuclear option. The U.S. situation As we sow, so shall we reap. In the USA, further expansion of the nuclearpower industry has been almost stymied by government actions that reflect mounting public concern. There is no national storage facility for spent reactor fuel and it has been decided not to reprocess it; consequently, existing power plants are about to choke on their own wastes. Since the Three Mile Island accident, no new nuclear plants have received operating licenses, although several are ready to start up. The uncertainty of future government action has caused the abandonment of plans for a number of new nuclear plants. In addition, many research projects related to medicine and agriculture, which produce low-level radioactive wastes, are about to be shut down for lack of licensed disposal facilities. Deep sewer tunnels are required to meet future growth demands of the City of Austin?s down-town redevelopment. The tunnel is 18,000 ft long and varies in finished diameter from 54 inches to 96 inches. The tunnel crosses under Austin?s Town Lake three times and there are four main work shaft sites. Geology, groundwater, foundations, downtown redevelopment, and an active, healthy community put significant constraints on the design. This paper discusses a major underground project for downtown Austin and discusses the risk considerations and the opportunities the design team took toward optimizing the project design for the construction phase.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.
