Acid mine drainage is the result of the oxidation of pyrite and similar iron sulfide material and the release of iron and sulfuric acid into the environment. In addition to the acid water flowing from underground and surface mines, spoil materials in surface mines are acidic and will not support good vegetative growth; thus erosion is a major problem. Lime and limestone are the major neutralizing agents used to treat these acidic conditions. Lime is the reagent preferred by industry for treating acid discharges, although a few companies use limestone. Agricultural lime- stone is used to "sweeten" acid spoils.

A microcomputer equipped with spreadsheet, data management, and FOR- TRAN programming software is used to update and quantify a model for ranking seventeen economically important metal commodities in terms of market potential (Huyck, 1982). Weighted factors are used for the ranking: (1) demand growth trends, (2) end-use substitution vulnerability, (3) recycling trends, (4) price trends, and (5) cumulative demand versus world reserves factor. Price trends are defined using (1) price-vs.-year slopes (with prices in 1967 constant dollars) and (2) standard deviations of slopes (to indicate price volatility). Substitution vulnerability is defined as the percent of end-use which is replace- able by other commodities, and a factor indicating the likelihood of such substitution. Factors are normalized and linearly combined to produce a ranking of the seventeen metals. Microcomputer software is essential for organizing data and calculating statistical parameters and linear combinations of factors.

Most magnesia, MgO, whether of natural or synthetic origin, is utilized in its dead burned or periclase form as refractory linings for the production of steel. Continued research in refractory science combined with good refractory maintenance and improvements in steel making practice have resulted in decreased use of magnesia. To make up for this loss of business producers of synthetic magnesia have started to manufacture a variety of magnesium based chemicals that are utilized in many diverse industries and applications.

The Subtropolis mine is a room-and-pillar mine extracting the Vanport Limestone near Petersburg, Ohio. In February 2018, mine management began implementing a heading reorientation to better control the negative effects of excessive levels of horizontal stress. The conditions in the headings improved, but as expected, stressrelated damage concentrated within crosscuts. The mine operator has worked to lessen the impact of the instabilities in the outby crosscuts by implementing several engineering controls. With the implementation of each control, conditions were monitored and analyzed using observational and measurement techniques including three-dimensional (3-D) LiDAR surveys.

A single four feet diameter cell, treating a Cu/Mo rougher concentrate, has been fully instrumented and linked to a Distributed Control System. This has enabled the writers to further understand the mechanics of operation of the cell, particularly that of the "TRANSITION ZONE". This is the volume between the feed port and the pulp-froth inter- face. The results have shown a need for the re-designing the control loops whereby the Transition Zone volume (or pulp level ) becomes the single most important control parameter to achieve the de- sired recovery. Air consumption, previously thought to have played this role, is now kept at precoalescence level s for maximum efficiency.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13-km (8-mile) overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is a conventional three-roller, 35 degree trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design resulted in a 5.4-m/sec (17.7-ft/sec) belt speed, 1,000 mm- (40 in.-) belt width to convey 1.35 kt/h (1,490 stph) and 7 Mt/a (7.7 million stpy) of coal. Despite a high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 m/sec (21 ft/sec) in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput in-crease. In 2002, a new low loss ST2100 1,100 mm- (43 in.-) wide belt replaced the ST2250 that was due to be changed-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to increase the OLC capacity to 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy). Upgrading the OLC by increasing the belt speed was the lowest capital option. Increasing belt width and/or modifying the trough angle to have larger cross sectional area was not an economical option because it would require expensive changes and significant down time of the OLC. To achieve 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy), the belt speed had to be increased to 8.5 m/sec (28 ft/sec). Although such high belt speed looked feasible, there was no information at that time of other OLC operating at such high speed. There was a risk that the conveyor would not operate safely and reliably at higher speeds. This risk was escalated by the fact there was no facility to lower or fine-tune the belt speed once the higher belt speed was implemented.

Coal production in the United States in 2008 reached a record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.5 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This is an increase of 2.2 percent, or 22.5 Mt (24.8 million st) above the 2007 level and 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) above the prior record level set in 2006. Although coal production was higher in 2008, U.S. total coal consumption decreased in all sectors for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2008 was lower by 0.3 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 2.8 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 3.7 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, that had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector prior to 2008, declined by 0.6 percent in 2008. It is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors. (Note: All percent-age change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) U.S. coal exports were significantly higher in 2008, while coal imports decreased during the year. Total coal stocks increased in 2008, as some consumers added to their stockpiles. The coal synfuel industry, which grew throughout most of this decade, disappeared from the scene due to the expiration of the available federal tax credits at the end of 2007. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of slowing domestic economic growth, particularly in the latter half of the year, combined with the weather conditions in 2008, resulting in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2008. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 3.2-Mt (3.5-mil-lion st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sec-tor. In the past 15 years the enforced improvement of the public traffic systems caused a boom in urban tunnel construction. In 1961 the City of Paris started to build the Express-Metro. Of the 47 km long double-track line crossing the city center, nearly 45 km are in operation since 1971. Still missing is here only an about 2.6 km long connecting stretch, which is under construction now. From 1963 to 1969 the 21.8 km long Victoria Line was built in London as extension of the existing network,. A little later, in the years 1965 to 1973, the City of Hamburg supplemented its subway network by the construction of a 16.8 km long line between the Boroughs of Billstedt and Stellingen. Also in 1965 the City o Munich started to build a subway system of 54 km f length. Thereof a stretch of 16.2 km could be taken into operation in 1972 shortly before the Olympic Games. These are only some of the better known projectsas examples of the activities in European cities. In nearly all cities with more than about ½ million inhabitants subsurface traffic lines were begun or supplemented. Furthermore, numerous undercuts or other subsurface structures were built. The Ij Tunnel in Amsterdam and the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg may be mentioned, both structures finding international attention.

The main constituents of flat glass are the eight commonest elements of the earth's crust. Five of these, silicon, sodium, calcium, magnesium and oxygen are essential. Two more, Aluminum and potassium have beneficial properties. For colorless glasses iron is undesirable, in standard clear glasses a small amount of iron is tolerable, while for most tinted glasses iron is essential. These elements are present in glass as oxides and because they are so common there is no foreseeable resource shortage. The availability of supplies of materials at particular sites at prices which enable a glass manufacturer to be competitive may be another matter. In this paper it is intended to provide a historical perspective to the current situation, to contrast some of the traditional North American and European practices, and to progressively review some of the driving forces for future change and to attempt to assess their effects upon both raw material supplier and consumer.

The heavy oil reservoirs of Alberta and Saskatchewan include sequences of unconeolidated silts and fine sands which respond in an unusual manner when subjected to the high temperature and pore-fluid-pressure associated with steam injection and other thermal enhanced recovery techniques. Apparent transient connections are suddenly established between producers and injectore and there is an associated enhancement in oil (and sand) production. These phenomena have been attributed to local fluidization and piping processes which are known to occur in situations where high pore-fluid-pressures prevent the mobilization of intergranular friction. These breakdown processes may be associated with the penetration of tongues of the heated reservoir fluids with suspended sand into the creep sensitive intact reservoir since the viscosity ratios are sufficiently high for viscous fingering instability of the fluid-fluid interface. A program of laboratory tests has been carried out to measure the strength characteristic of saturated oil sands at a variety of temperatures and fluid pressures. These tests suggest, that in common with the coarser Athabasca sands, the Waseca sands have very little cohesive strength and show the characteristic dilational failure response of dense sands. Some special tests, devised to determine the relative ease with which samples can be fluidized, confirm the expected susceptibility of the fine- sand silts. Both piping and fluidization can be readily induced at in-situ reservoir temperatures and pressures. Analysis of stresses around wellbores suggests that fluid-pressure gradients may be sufficient to initiate piping and that backward erosion along streamlines may link producers and injectors. Such pipes may act as well “adits” gathering oil from the heated reservoir and contributing to enhanced production rates. Mechanical breakdown of the reservoir by drilling, injection and production processes provides a consistent possible explanation for the sand-cut response of production wells.

One-half of the $607 million Conveyance construction portion of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Water Pollution Abatement Program is completed or under contract. 12,200 m (7.5 miles) of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven rock tunnel from 2.5 m (8.0 ft) to 9.9 m (32.3 ft) diameter has been completed. This paper presents a review of TBM performance and a discussion of the pertinent geological conditions of the area.

Resource Enterprises Inc. (REI) is exploiting the coalbed gas resource by working in unison with active underground mining operations. At REZ7s pilot project at the Soldier Canyon mine, Carbon County, UT, RE1 has drilled nearly 15.25 km (50,000 ft) of horizontal in-seam and slant boreholes during the initial two years of drilling activity. Produced gas has been sold to a natural gas transmission company on a continuous basis since mid 1983.

Impacts of mining on surface water and groundwater occur frequently not only in active mines but in abandoned mines, then the establishment of effective legal mechanisms for the regulation and control of mine waters is a necessary step in order to avoid pollution from mine waters and in consequence to contribute for a sustainable development of the mining industry. Currently there is a lack of a specific European legislation about mine waters and this absence of legislation occurs too at national level in many European countries. This absence of an European specific regulatory framework for mine water pollution questions the effectiveness and the applicability of the current legislation and this fact has led the EC to put forward proposals legislation to adequately deal with environmental and social consequences of mining, and among those proposals is a draft for a directive on waste from the extractive industry that includes provisions for mine water pollution.

The recovery of gold by ore leaching is influenced by the size of the particles and the chemical environment. Within the experimental error associated to the testing of gold ore, results of a series of leaching tests conducted with natural ores rather than monosized samples confirm that gold dissolution increases with decreasing ore particle size. The tests also indicate that the dissolution of gold in the ore within a size interval is weakly affected by the intensity of the size reduction method.

Geochemical and mineralogical analyses of 46 samples from six drill cores in the Mayday mine pile near Silverton, Colorado, demonstrate wide variability in trace metal contents with spatial location. This variability results from the original geochemical composition of mined rocks, mixing of ore and non- ore rocks during emplacement of the pile, and weathering since rocks were placed in the pile. Weathering reactions are controlled by factors such as pile thickness (depth), water availability, microbial activity, and mineral dissolution and formation kinetics. These factors result in variable redistributions of trace metals from primary (ore) to secondary (weathering products) minerals within each core.

Appalachian kimberlites appear to be spatially distributed along two structure parallel trends running from Tennessee to New York. It is hypothesized that the kimberlites were emplaced at the intersection of structure parallel basement faults and cross- structural lineaments. The latter are expressed in potential field and remotely sensed data. The western trend follows the Rome Trough from eastern Kentucky to south central New York. The eastern trend parallels the edge of the Ridge and Valley in Virginia and Maryland.

The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

INTRODUCTION Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of contaminant metal ions and other chemicals on the flotation. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances, cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions. Some adsorption (abstraction) experiments were also performed. Experimental materials and methods The barite used was a high-purity, naturally occur¬ring mineral sample (Kings Creek, SC). The material was ground in a porcelain mill and a fine fraction (mean particle size 11.49 µm) separated out by air elutriation. The mean size was determined by an aqueous sedimentation method using a CAHN electro-balance. In the method, an 0.6-g sample of the barite was dispersed in 450 cm3 of pH 7 water containing 0.01 g of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean particle size was denoted X0. The stability of the barite suspensions was determined by a comparison of the mean size of the investigated barite suspension aggregations with the mean size of barite powder determined in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate. The mean sizes (X) of the barite aggregations were determined using the same amount of water and barite sample as in the measurements of dispersed barite particle size but without the presence of polyphosphate. The ratio X/Xo is thus a measure of the stability of a suspension (the greater the ratio, the less stable the suspension). The adsorption (abstraction) experiments were carried out in polyethylene bottles containing 1 g of barite powder in 200 mL of solution. The solids were added to a solution containing a known concentration of metal chloride salts (AlCl3, FeCl2, MgCl2, and CaCl2) . The pH was controlled by both HCl and NaOH addition. The suspensions were agitated in a shaker for three hours. The final ion concentrations in solution were determined by atomic absorption analysis. The electrokinetic measurements were made using a Komline-Sanderson Zeta Reader in a conventional manner. All experiments were carried out in the presence of 1.0x10-3 k.mol/m3 NaClO4. Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.
