NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. Some commodities, such as natural aggregate, currently are produced in all 13 states; others such as beryllium and iodine are produced in only Utah and Oklahoma, respectively. Together, the 13 western states make a significant contribution to the US industrial minerals industry.

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell's staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. They asked me to examine magnesium deposits in Nevada at once, and then to look at other magnesium and aluminum properties. After leaving

Newmont Gold operates the Carlin East underground, one of four underground gold mines the company operates in northeastern Nevada. Carlin East began full production in early 1995. The mine's current rate is 900 t/d (1,000 stpd), producing about 4.6 t/a (150,000 oz/year). About 125 hourly and salaried personnel are employed at the project for its estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently used at the Carlin East Mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased an AC-Eickhoff ET-210 roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June 1997. It is used in longhole Stope topcut development and cut-and-fill production at a rate of 225 t/d (250 stpd)

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

This paper examines Bolivia's General Environmental Bill recently passed by Congress: a multi-purpose law with two primary objectives: a) the protection and conservation of the environment, and b) the promotion of sustainable development. In this law, environmental benefits are emphasized by stating general principles, not by attempting to define the means. Regulations are left to the writing of subsequent complementary codes. This paper shows that much of the controversy surrounding the legislation disappears when it is seen as guide rather than an operational part of Bolivia's industrial policy. In essence, the law addresses recent environmental awareness in a region more anxious than ever to speed economic growth.

Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer's Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff's office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company's underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues. The Hicom mill is a conical mill in which a ball or autogenous load tumbles within a high-intensity acceleration field. An autogenous Hicom mill with a power density of about 1100 kw/m3 and a volume of just 4 litres reduced a 50 m quartzite feed to 90% passing 38 microns at a feed rate of 160kg/h (in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone). Batch tests have identified fracture, chipping and abrasion breakage mechanisms at pebble sizes of 5 to 50 mm. The special behaviour of the load in Hicom mills was exploited to develop a novel technique for estimating steady state autogenous load size distributions.

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. The Republic of Monte Negro (a member of the Serbia and Monte Negro federation) has 26 different mineral raw materials, 4 of which are recoverable and 22 unrecoverable. At present, 12 types of mineral raw materials are exploited. Based on these resources more than 80 facilities were built for the production and processing of mineral raw materials. The most significant of them are coal, bauxite and decorative and technical stone. Bearing in mind that all the mentioned mining facilities have significant impact on the living environment, and that Monte Negro was declared the ecological state, the objective of this paper is to present the experience acquired from this field of science.

Along with kyanite and sillimanite, andalusite forms part of the sillimanite industrial minerals trimorphous alumina-silicate group. Theoretically, andalusite contains about 60% A1203 and 40% Si02, with a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0-3.2. Andalusite generally occurs in the contact metamorphic zones of schists and shales, constituting about 10% of the ground mass ore body. The 5- to 20mm- (0.2- to 0.8-in.-) long crystals are usually liberated through crushing and magnetic/heavy-media separation. Relatively minor occurrences of andalusite are found in Andalusia, Spain (where it was first identified), Portugal, the former Soviet Union, Ghana, South Korea, California and North Carolina. It also occurs in China, France and South Africa. The latter two represent nearly all the andalusite that is exported. Andalusite is an inert refractory raw material that does not require calcining before use. It involves an internal conversion to mullite after heating to 1400° to 1600° C (2552° to 2912° F). At higher temperatures of about 1800° C (3272° F), the mullite converts to corundum and liquid silica.

Planning of New York’s new subway line dictated the location of shallow underground station caverns and track crossovers. Clear span openings ranging from70 feet to 100 feet and lengths in excess of 1000 feet, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet required judicious selection of construction methods, equipment, and proper sequencing of the excavation stages. Rock classifications alone could not predict the behavior of the rock mass during construction. A robust design procedure that considered most of the important aspects of rock behavior and elements of shallow tunnel design, minimized the negative impacts of variable geotechnical data. This paper describes the intricacies of the planning and design of the $16 billion Second Avenue Subway with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

This study proposes a methodology for dewatering of mine waste using a multistage process, combining geotextile tubes and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), which accelerates the recycling process of water for aggregate mine waste facilities. For this purpose, waste from a rock quarry located in Istanbul was investigated. Flocculation tests revealed that the use of anionic PAM at an optimum dosage reduced sedimentation time and decreased turbidity. The compatibility of geotextiles and mine waste conditioned with different dosages of the effective PAM was evaluated by rapid dewatering tests, considering the water content of the filter cake, amount of infiltrated solid content, and rate of filtration. Geotextile dewatering tests were also performed on PAM-free and conditioned suspensions. The dewatering process was optimized by the use of a geotextile tube in two stages: (i) on the unconditioned suspension and (ii) on recovered PAM-conditioned leachate. Directing PAM-free non-hazardous soil-based material obtained in stage i to alternative beneficial uses is suggested, to minimize the volume of waste. Furthermore, recycling of the effluent obtained at the second stage of the proposed method will ensure more efficient water reuse

In order to keep good air condition in any specific branch such as coal face and/or heading in an underground coal mine, effective factors of all the branches with respect to the specified branch have been investigated, using computer simulation. Main results of the paper are as follows; 1) A branch in a network is classified to one of three classes of effectiveness to increase, to decrease and not to change airflow rate in the specific branch by altering aerodynamic resistance in the branch. 2) Distribution of position of branches, belonging to each class, related to a specific branch is one of the macroscopic characteristic of a network which is the inherent property of every network. 3) A relation of the aerodynamic resistances of any two branches to keep a constant airflow rate in the specified branch is shown as a monotonous curve. 4) Ventilation transition diagram with the rate of airflow in the two branches as coordinates, and for different rates of airflow in the specific branch as the parameter, is found to be straight lines. 5) Existing range of airflow rates In the specified branch is given as a parameter in the enclosed area in the ventilation transition diagram. Moreover, an expert system to assist ventilation control using a transition diagram of airflow rate is introduced in this paper.

Because of the competitive nature of the iron ore pelletizing industry, commodities required for the production of pellets are continually being scrutinized to minimize their usage and offset rapidly escalating costs. In the Tilden pellet plant, the usage of one commodity, bentonite, has been reduced from over twenty-four pounds per long ton of pellets to as low as eight pounds per long ton. The evolution of bentonite usage from plant start-up to the present time is described.

"When boring a tunnel, homogeneous hard rock is the exception rather than the rule. While contractors can set goals such as meters per month and performance incentives, it is also prudent to plan for difficult ground. A properly designed tunnel boring machine (TBM) can tackle fault zones, water inflows, squeezing ground, or whatever the risk may be. The alternative is not a good one: modifying the machine in the tunnel after bad ground is encountered. Not only does this result in increased downtime, but it also needlessly exposes the crew to the tunnel conditions. In the worst case scenario, the entire operation grinds to a halt.However, an accurate GBR cannot always be obtained, particularly for mountainous, high cover tunnels in remote locations. And even with a thorough GBR, unforeseen geological events can occur. What can be done in these situations? Difficult Ground Solutions (DGS) is ground investigation system with a suite of options that can be added to a shielded hard rock machine or dual-mode, Crossover machine to better enable advance when conditions are unknown or difficult conditions are anticipated.DGS consists of a set of integrated features tailored to a specific project’s geology. The main components of the system allow for ground investigation ahead of the TBM, increased monitoring and methods to keep a machine shield from becoming stuck.In fault zones and squeezing groundIf fault zones or squeezing ground are known or suspected, or if there is even a possibility of encountering them, this can greatly affect the TBM operation. Shielded machines protect the crew from the surrounding rock, and they can bore and line a tunnel efficiently, but in fault zones and converging material their shields can be their downfall. Avoiding a stuck machine is paramount to project success. DGS employs several features to avoid the problem of a machine becoming stuck. The first of these is multi-speed cutterhead drives. These drives effectively give the machine multiple modes of operation—high speed, low torque for hard rock, and low speed, high torque for difficult ground. Designing a machine with high-torque, continuous boring capabilities allows that machine’s cutterhead to restart with break-out torque in difficult ground. The net effect is that the machine can keep boring in the event of a face collapse and can bore through fault zones and running ground where the potential for cutterhead jamming exists. Going one step further, multi-speed gearboxes give the machine the ideal earth pressure balance- (EPB-) type torque if larger sections of soft ground are anticipated.Secondly, TBMs can get through squeezing ground and faults using Continuous Shield Advance. This design utilizes a stepped shield configuration — where each successive shield is slightly smaller in diameter — to avoid becoming stuck in converging ground. External shield lubrication is an added insurance against becoming stuck, using a series of radial ports that can pump Bentonite into the annular space to act as a lubricant in squeezing material.As a last effort, if a machine has already become stuck the TBM can utilize augmented, or “super” thrust. Additional thrust jacks can be added to supply an extra boost in a short stroke, generating enough force to break loose a trapped shield."

This paper is concerned with subsidence prediction methods and in particular with two techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. In more detail, the hyperbolic tangent profile function, as developed by VPI&SU from field data pertaining to the eastern U.S. coalfields, and an influence function method currently being adapted for the same region, are presented and discussed. The applicability, advantages and limitations of these techniques are examined and comparisons are presented with field measurements. Computer software developed for the application of these prediction methods, for two widely used personal computer systems, are also discussed and a number of examples are presented demonstrating the potential of such programs.

In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

The Tennohji-Benten Giant Trunk Sewer Project has been under construction since 1974 in the eastern part of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. The entire project is divided into 7 blocks, some of which have already been completed. This 8.8-km sewer tunnel, being driven through a densely populated area, was planned to be constructed by the shield tunneling method. This paper described shield tunneling performances and ground behaviors during the construction of Blocks 2 and 3. An earth pressure shield (dia., 6,750 mm) was employed in Block 3 tunneling. The ground was generally soft and the cover over the tunnel varied from 13 m to only 4.5 m, so that a considerable amount of chemicals was injected to stabilize the ground. A hand-digging type shield (dia., 7,250 mm) was used in Block 2 tunneling under compressed air. For 85 m of the total length of 1.6 km, the soil at the face was extremely soft, and therefore, the ground freezing method was additionally employed.
