Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

This paper presents an update on hydraulic mining research in the United States. A comparison is made between the development of the technology in this country and the state of the art in other parts of the world.

Since the discoveries of favorable deposits are becoming increasingly difficult, mining operations shift to lower grade and deeper deposits. The viability of these operations is sensitive to many factors, such as commodity prices and operating costs. Given that a mining corporation has no power to set prices, the focus is directed on minimizing the operating costs. Underground mining operations require a network infrastructure, including shaft, ramps, declines, levels, cross-cuts, raises, winzes, and adit. The design of this network is a costly process. As such, it has a significant potential to reduce development and haulage costs. Furthermore, network design is a continuous process along with development, production, and maintenance throughout mine life. Under the constraints of the turning radius, the gradient, and the obstacle avoidance for haulage network of underground mines, this paper first demonstrates network design and optimization approaches using Dubins path combined with the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm. A threshold-based model is developed, providing viable solutions to the network design when the number of declines is high. Furthermore, a three-dimensional Rapid-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm combined with Dubins path is employed as a heuristic solver for obstacle avoidance purposes in the network. Various case studies are conducted to show the applicability of the proposed methods.

Malthus, an eighteenth century economist, predicted a rather dismal future for the world. It was his contention food supplies would not be sufficient for the population of the world because the economy of a nation grew arithmetically while population increased geometrically. As a consequence, within a relatively few years mass famine would spread throughout the world. This prophecy, based on an agrarian economic situation, did not come true at least insofar as the Western World was concerned. In largo measure, the salvation of our part of the earth resulted from the growth engendered by the Industrial Revolution. Throughout much of today's world, however, the Malthusian theory seems to be coming true. The advantages and benefits of the Industrial Revolution have net reached all nations. Further, the situation has been compounded by the benefits of modern medicine. This has reduced child mortality and extended life expectancy, but placed no limitations on births in the developed countries, child mortality has declined to 2 percent and adult life expectancy has doubled, but education and general prosperity have resulted in voluntary limitations on pregnancies thus partly offsetting the increased chance of survivals Even so, the present rate of population increase in Europe is approximately 6 percent per decade, and somewhat higher in the U.S., Japan, and other developed countries. The world as a whole, however, is expected to double its population by the year 2000, This would imply a rate of increase in the less developed countries approximately four times that in Europe.

This paper examines the relevant theory, experience, and past practices relating to development mining near gas or oil wells. It addresses setback distance for both coal and stone room-and-pillar mining. This study also involved a review of accident reports involving well interceptions and downhole well surveys. It provides technical considerations for decisions regarding safe setback distances for development mining throughout the United States. The study’s scope is limited to mining near active or inactive (i.e., non-producing, abandoned or inadequately plugged) wells with known surface locations.

In recent years, a variety of new or substantially modified grinding machines have been offered to the mining industry with claims of improved performance relative to standard grinding machines especially rod and ball mills. The incentive for developing such new machines is high, because costs associated with grinding are a very substantial part of the total costs of processing run-of-mine ore, and gold ores are no exception in this regard. The incentive is also high because of the very low conversion of input energy to comminution energy in most tumbling mills. If the most energy-efficient means of mechanical size reduction is slow compression of single particles, then this energy amounts to only about 3% of that used in tumbling mills. It would seem, therefore, that there is a huge potential to do better. This paper examines three types of grinding machine for which claims of higher energy utilisation ( amongst other beneficial claims) have been made, namely the high pressure grinding rolls, the vibrating drum mill and various styles of stirred mill. It presents evidence concerning the claims, examines the range of particle size and particle size reduction over which benefits might reasonably be expected to accrue, discusses the major issues in contention and briefly describes the research the CSIRO Division of Minerals has in progress, both independently and collaboratively, the latter mainly with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) via the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) and the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA). Workers in coal preparation plants, where vibrating screens are significant noise sources, are often exposed to sound levels exceeding 90 dB(A). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a major coal company, and a vibrating screen manufacturer conducted a cooperative study of vibrating screen noise. Rubber isolators reduced sound levels by 1 dB. Urethane screen panels did not reduce sound levels in this case. Drive noise was determined to be the dominant noise source on the screen. Damped side plates reduced vibration levels on the screen sides by 1 to 7 dB(A). Detailed results of the study are presented.

The mining industry worldwide has recognized in the past the need to apply specific rules and guidelines in the reporting of mineral resources and reserves. The high financial investment and risk associated with any mining project and the ever stricter environmental and social controls were the forces behind this recognition. For years the industry experienced the development and enforcement of several codes for reporting accepted by different countries. The implementation of any code can be a confusing task as the guidelines are sometimes general and open to different interpretation. The use of computers in the estimation and reporting of mineral resources and reserves is necessary, particularly when trying to implement particular code guidelines. This paper discusses ways to implement a reporting code in a computerised resource/re-serve estimation study. The implementation is demonstrated using a gold deposit project as an example. The effects of mining, metallurgical, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social and governmental factors are taken into consideration. This paper also discusses well established reporting codes and the possibility of reaching a single, universally applied code that could be used by Greek mining companies.

A geotechnical instrumentation program consisting of borehole extensometers and portable tape extensometer stations was effectively used to monitor concrete liner deformations and guide construction procedures during enlargement of a 75-year old Union Pacific Railroad tunnel in Wyoming. Enlargement involved excavation of the old concrete invert and placement of 5,941 feet of new concrete invert 6 feet lower in squeezing shales, fault zones and water-bearing sandstones. Instrumentation data were used to guide procedures for excavating the old invert, installation of temporary interior struts, underpinning existing liner walls, and placing the new concrete invert.

Alunite has been utilized as raw materials for producing alumina and potassium sulfate fertilizer in Russia for many years. In the United States, this mineral has not been commercially processed though reserves of 5 to 10 billion tons of alunite ore have been estimated. Major constituents of these ores include quartz and alunite. The minerals are finely intergrown and liberation occurs below 10 microns. Adequate separation techniques for such fine particles have not been developed. A new method for the beneficiation of alunite ore is proposed in this study. 'Ibis method utilizes a small amount of fine magnetite upon which the liberated quartz is selectively flocculated. The co-flocculated magnetite and quartz are then separated from the alunite in a high gradient magnetic separator. Clean products, e.g. an alunite concentrate of 90% grade with 80% recovery, has been obtained from an Utah ore. Techniques for the selective co-flocculation of magnetite and quartz, the separation of the carried quartz, and the recovery of magnetite after separation are discussed.

CO2 emissions from carbonate laden reclaimed mine spoil has been shown to pose a hazard to residents in homes built on or adjacent to such land. The objective of this project was to develop a soil CO2 flux survey protocol for assessing reclaimed mine land. The research involved CO2 chamber accumulation flux surveys; stable carbon isotope ratio analysis; statistical hypothesis testing to examine correlation between CO2 flux and soil temperature and moisture as well as spatial dependence; and geostatistics to map CO2 and delineate high flux zones. Soil temperature was observed to have a positive correlation with fluxes while soil moisture was observed to be negatively correlated. Spatial dependence of CO2 fluxes on reclaimed mine land was observed on one of the two study sites. The research suggests that macro-porosity and gas permeability may be important factors that explain CO2 migration in mine spoil. A flux survey protocol has been developed, based on these results, for reclaimed mine lands. The work demonstrates the capability of geostatistical methods to delineate high flux fields. Further research will be required to determine suitable thresholds for such analysis.

With the world’s ever-growing push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source of rare earths found in the United States is bastnaesite, a rare-earth-bearing fluorocarbonate, mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it has been essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to capture current reserves. This paper presents the results of a research program conducted to expand the understanding of the bastnaesite leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge and thermodynamic calculations, a novel single-stage hydrochloric acid leach system was created to optimize the extraction of rare earths from bastnaesite. Historically, this extraction has entailed the use of a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach followed by a caustic crack. We ran a series of single-stage leach experiments by reacting locked-cycle flotation concentrate with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these single-stage tests showed significantly higher rare-earth recoveries than the reported recoveries of the historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the number and amount of reagents needed.

INTRODUCTION Upflow Solids Contact Clarification is a process long employed in the treatment of potable water, wastewater and municipal sewage. This process incorporated in a fiberglass conical structure seems to offer an economical solution to problems encountered in reduction of particulates in uranium effuents. CONCEPT OF UPFLOW CLARIFICATION Use of suspended solids contact units date back to the 1930's. These types of units produced by Infilco and the Permutit Company, among others, were used in the Lime-Soda softening process to precipitate calcium and magnesium salts from hard water. In general, the process operated as follows: (a) Raw water entered a central chamber where it was mixed with chemicals. The chamber had provisions for agitating and circulating the chemicals so that mixing and reaction zones were formed. (b) The water, precipitated chemicals, floc and turbidity flows to a clarification chamber (the Permutit precipitator used a truncated cone). In most cases the influent then passes upward through a blanket of suspended floc and other solids before it leaves the chamber at effluent weirs or launders.

An ongoing research program is characterizing the ore qualities that most affect mine and mill processing of iron. Current practice uses assays of magnetic iron and silica, but additional qualities are needed for advanced process control. If additional qualities can be measured from core, blastholes, or process samples, they can be modeled and controlled similarly. What qualities, other than assays, hinder or facilitate beneficiation at each processing step, and how can they be measured in the mine/mill ore stream? This paper describes preliminary determinations of the effects of ore chemistry, hardness, blasthole drill performance, fragmentation control, and grindability on mill performance.

The Ozarks has been called "a diamond in the rough". In this region streams have steep gradients, sparkling clear flows of cold water fed by many springs, and a wildness that is almost unique in the central part of the United States today. The Current River and its tributary, Jacks Fork, have been set aside for preservation by the National Park Service as a "Wild River" in the first park of its kind in the country. It is called the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. Similarly, responsibility for the preservation of the Eleven Point River has been assigned to the U. S. Forest Service. Protection of other streams in the Ozarks has been considered by State agencies. The hydrologic system of the Ozarks is a complex network of gaining and losing streams, caves, conduits, and large springs. Increased sewage loads derived from the growing towns and expanding tourist trade are a potential hazard; effluents may flow underground for long distances, polluting springs and wells. To add another dimension to the hydrologic picture a new lead industry is also flourishing in the Ozarks. Although the history of lead mining in the area goes back to 1701 (U. S. G. S., p. 43), the area has not seen a revitalization like the one that has been developing in the last 10 years; and the economic growth promises to continue indefinitely. Although this brings capital expenditures and wages into the area, it also brings potential hydrologic problems. Chemicals, wastes and other substances either stored on the surface or transported across it are subject to accidental spillage. In an area where these substances remain on the surface their effects are subject to surveillance. In the Ozarks, however, this may not be possible.

Mt Giona situated in the floristic hot-spot of southern-central Greece has an especially rich flora that counts more than 1000 native vascular plant taxa (species and subspecies) and an important plant endemism that is estimated to be about 10% of the native flora. The danger of population reduction of rare and endemic plant species and the opportunity to use rare native species in rehabilitation projects are two different aspects of rehabilitation planning in Mt Giona. In this study, an inventory of rare and endemic species of the area, their classification into IUCN threatened categories and an estimation of their habitats vulnerability are provided. The results emphasize the necessity to develop a monitoring program to analyze population viability of certain threatened plant species. The creation of artificial micro-reserves on calcareous spoils derived from bauxite mining for the conservation of water-stress tolerant rare and endemic plants is also proposed. An inventory of the species that have colonized the mining spoils was also undertaken. Twelve of them are endemics. Seven native species, because of their biological and ecological features, were selected for rehabilitation purposes of disturbed areas by mining activities. Seed germination, aspects of their reproductive biology and seedling emergence after sowing in pots under field conditions were studied. The seed germination study in the laboratory led to the identification of the optimum germination conditions and the creation of germination protocol for each species. Seedling emergence depends on the sowing season and the mulching. The use of the above species is recommended for rehabilitation purposes. The creation of artificial micro-reserves on calcareous spoils derived from bauxite mining for the conservation of water-stress tolerant rare and endemic plants is also proposed.

Hydrologic investigations at Gold Quarry began in 1989 and continued through 1991. Hydro-stratigraphic units include Tertiary sedimentary rocks, Paleozoic siltstones and carbonates. These units display complex and variable aquifer parameters as a function of faulting and hydrothermal alteration, creating compartmentalized hydrologic domains. Testing has included step-tests, spinner production logs and constant discharge tests. Two Three-Dimensional Finite Element Models have been developed, one for optimizing the pit dewatering system and the second for predicting regional impacts of dewatering. Aquifer testing and long term pumping have been used to calibrate both Finite Element Models.

Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). Historically, geologic data has not been adequately considered in resource estimation. More recently, with the use of computers and sophisticated estimation algorithms and geostatistical justifications, geology has been downplayed further. Many reasons are given for not using geology including cost, time and irrelevance. None are valid. Boundaries defining mineral domains should be used in computer-generated resource estimates. Selected case histories show how the failure to honor geology has caused discrepancies in resource estimates of actual in-place resources. After-the-fact differences have included decreases in tonnage of up to 50% and increases up to 300%; partial to complete recategorization of material; and 50% decreases in grade. The costs of gathering and using geology are trivial compared to the potential consequences.

"Name your poison," wrote Forbes, Jan. 3, 1983, in an article describing the plight of much of the mineral industry as it entered the new year. "To ask which (mining) segment is better these days is almost like asking which of several stones would make a better life preserver." "The scene has seldom seemed darker or apparently less promising," said the Mining Journal in June 1982. And the Northern Miner described the year as the third in a "3-year drought which has completely dried up (company) coffers." Thus, 1982 became the worst year for much of the mining industry since the Great Depression. Low prices, commodity surpluses, output reductions, layoffs, temporary and permanent closures, and financial losses made headlines as the general recession continued to hurl blows at an industry facing strong foreign competition, increased government regulations, and plummeting market demand. At fault were tight US monetary policies and the resulting high interest rates that, while forcing inflation to slow, also threw the economic wheels of the country into reverse gear. Automobile production, housing starts, consumer durable sales, and capital spending all fell dramatically. US industrial production fell about 8.5% in 1982, with the GNP dropping by 1.7%. Production Value Not a single mineral escaped this recession. According to the US Bureau of Mines, US nonfuel production value dropped for all but four out of 21 metals and 14 out of 44 nonmetals. Production quantities increased for only gold, lead, and zirconium among metals and for only six nonmetals. Total nonfuel mineral production value dropped a whopping 21% from 1981 levels, the largest decline since 1938 and the first since 1971. Production value was estimated at $20 billion. Metal commodities showed heavier losses than nonmetals-37% vs. 12%-because of their link to depressed automobile and construction industries. Prices From peaks in early 1980, prices of precious and base metals, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and virtually every mineral dropped to 30-month lows in June 1982. Gold dropped to $9.64/g ($300/oz) compared to a high of $27/g ($850/ oz). Silver was quoted below 164/g ($5/oz) versus a $1.61/g ($50/oz) high. Copper was offered at a five-year low of $1.22/kg (55.5¢/lb) compared with a high of $3.30/kg ($1.50/lb). Lead went for 53¢/kg (24¢/lb) versus $1.21 (554). Nickel begged for buyers at $4.19/kg ($1.90/lb) compared to a high price of $7.72/kg ($3.50/lb). Molybdenum was available at or below $8.82/kg ($4/lb), down from a high of $44/kg ($20/lb). Cobalt went for $11/kg ($5/lb) versus $55/kg ($25/lb). Adjusted for inflation, increased currency costs, and currency devaluation, many of these prices are the lowest reached in decades. Financial Profits & Losses Low prices severely impacted companies' earnings, turning profits into sometimes disastrous or fatal losses.
