In block caving, the rates and sequencing of undercut production blasting, drawbell blasting, and mucking are the key levers for attempting to manage cave performance. Cave performance encompasses a range of factors, which include growth, shape and the effect of the cave on the abutments, excavations, geological structures and lithology. We compare production data in several panels in the Grasberg DMLZ and GBC block caves with the seismic response in work areas, around geological structures, and in geotechnical domains. These comparisons enable evidence-based conceptualising of the effect of production rates and mining layouts. By also considering the correlation of seismic release rates in different parts of the rock mass, the wider influence of a cave can be gauged through considering possible stress and / or deformation transfer. This concept is not novel, but it is rarely implemented in a routine fashion, principally because production data rarely are easily available. Previously, it has also been used to retrospectively compare seismic hazard between different mines. This paper discusses practical, day-to-day tools to manage seismic response to mining. Therefore, the paper presents a methodology for presenting seismic release and production rates on integrated plots at any time to facilitate quick identification of correlated spatial regions. This methodology explores the production data collection and geolocation at Grasberg, which will be described in some detail.

The influence of solution ionic strength (IS) and electrolyte valence on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated. The microflotation tests were conducted over a range of solution IS (1?300 mM) at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (9.5), flotation time (10 min), and sodium oleate dosage (5.3×10-7 moles/g). The size of malachite ranged from 45 to 53 µm, and two different types of electrolytes (NaCl and CaCl2) were employed. Electrophoretic mobility was also measured over the same IS range employed in the microflotation study. Overall, strong coupled effect of solution IS and ion valence was observed. Specifically, the flotability of malachite increased with increasing IS in the presence of monovalent cation (Na+) while the flotability increased up to 30 mM and decreased with increasing IS in the presence of divalent cation (Ca2+). Notably, the flotability of malachite was greater with the presence of Na+ compared with Ca2+ under high IS conditions (IS>30 mM). Consistent trend for Na+ versus Ca2+ was observed from the flotation results with different SO dosages. The characterization and flotation results suggested that the trend was likely attributed to the increased unfavorable interaction between malachite and bubble via the charge reversal of bubbles and malachite at higher IS in the presence of Ca2+.

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulfide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular SO2 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and violarite have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: 1) pyrrhotite solid solution (Fe0.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals, and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinel crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag.

The use of inferential particle sizing for a closed wet grinding circuit control has been practiced for several years. This paper presents a review of some inferential sizing equations developed for pilot and industrial plants using regression analysis. An analytical development is then presented showing how the general inferential sizing model arises from the nature of the classifier model. The relation between the general sizing model and the individual equations is then discussed.

The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

Adverse geological condition is a major factor which makes construction difficulty in tunneling. But if it is predicted and tunnel support is made efficiently in time, the above difficulty can be reduced. It is necessary to develop one or several effective and economical geological methods for prediction of tunnel geology while expensive and time-consuming instruments are used. This paper reviews and proposes several geological methods for prediction of fault, seam, contact zone, and groundwater inrush. These methods have been proved to be effective and economical in tunneling practice in China.

Cauê Mine, is a large open pit, to produce about 41 million tons of iron ore during 1974, and an intensive program of investiga Lion was carried out to provide the basic data for stabilizing its slopes, The ultimate rock slope in the W area will be about 400 m high with dipping angles decreasing gradually from top to bottom of the pit. The investigations started in 1969 and since then many geologists and engineers, from both CVRD and Geotécnica S/A., assisted by international consultants, have given their contribution to the achievement of solutions. It is hoped that this paper may contribute to the slope stability of other mines in tropical climate.

Introduction In 1987, the US economy continued to grow steadily, reaching an annual rate of $4.6 trillion in the last quarter. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). Subsidence due to abandoned coal mines has received copious attention recently. This is a result of many factors such as the enactment of new mining laws and the effect subsidence has on land use over the mines. Prediction of subsidence features and the time aspects over supercritical extraction (i.e., longwall and high extraction ratio pillaring) is relatively accurate. However, predicting when subsidence will occur and the surface features' size and shape above subcritical extraction of room and pillar mining is not yet possible. This paper will discuss the factors that influence the time aspects of subsidence in room and pillar mining.

A review of the history of boosters is given with examples of the prominent types that have been made commercially. The performance and design features of protected core boosters are discussed in detail. A new gel booster is discussed with its advantages to the mining industry. Booster size, hole configuration, performance and safety aspects are reviewed. Important features of boostering in above ground and underground blasting are related to an economic analysis. This presentation will cover different types of boosters commonly used in mining. However, for the purpose of this paper a few terms need to be defined to clarify the action of different parts of a priming system. Booster* - "Any unit of explosive or blasting agent to be used in a charged hole for the purpose of perpetuating or intensifying the initial detonation". Primer* - "A unit, package or cartridge' of explosives containing a detonator or detonating cord which is used to transmit detonation to other explosives or blasting agents". Detonator - A device for initiating a detonation from a flame or a small electric current, the former being represented by a fuse cap and the latter an electric blasting cap.

INTRODUCTION Statistical analysis of results obtained by workers survey is very often limited to the determination of the collective dose and mean annual values. This information is not sufficent by itself for radiation protection purposes since the cumulative exposure of a worker during his working life is not taken into account. A more complete analysis would be obtained by considering both: [ ] These two notions are different. The former depends on the evolution of the protection with time and is related to annual limits (ICRP, 1977 and ICRP,1977 a). The second depends mainly on the works performed during the period of survey, the interference of protection evolution is weakened. So it is useful to foresee how the individual average annual doses would be when considering survey periods of 5, 10 years, or more. STUDIED POPULATION In order to analyse the two previously mentionned notions it is necessary to follow up a well defined population of workers which is continuously exposed to the radiological hazards on a long enough period. The selected population is that of the workers of the French uranium mines always present during the 1971-1979 period (9 years). The number of individuals is 937. The radiological hazards are: 1. exposure to radon and short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation. The workers of the uranium mines are exposed to these radiological risks in different ways according to the work performed. It is therefore necessary to subdivide the population into more homogeneous groups with respect to the radiological risks. Three groups are considered: - Group 1 : 227 individuals whose radon and dust exposures are always nil - Group 2 : 449 individuals whose radon and (or) dust exposures are different from 0 every year - Group 3 : 261 individuals represent a mixed category. Some features of these groups are given in table 1. [ ] The 937 followed individuals represent approximatively the half of the whole population of the French uranium mines. Taking into account the procedure adopted to select the studied population, it appears clearly that this population is not representative of the whole miner population. DOSIMETRIC RECORDS Three risk indicators are considered .Individual annual exposures to radon and its shortlived daughters. They are determined by ambient monitoring based on radon concentration measurements and recording of the times elapsed in the various workplaces. For each worker the annual exposure is represented by the mean annual air concentration and is expressed as a fraction of the maximum annual concentration (MAC). Given the administrative arrangements and the effective state of equilibrium between radon and its daughters, the maximum annual concentration is practically equivalent to 1 Working Level = 2.08 x 10- 5 jm-3. (UNSCEAR, 1977). . Individual annual exposures to long-lived ore dust which are also expressed in fraction of the maximum annual concentration. . Individual annual doses of external irradiation (X and [y] rays) expressed in mSv (= 10-3 Sievert). Irradiation monitoring is based on use of individual film badges.

INTRODUCTION Paradoxically, it has been found that the people who are the most aware of the origin, mineralogy and composition of bauxite are also the people who are the least aware of how bauxite composition affects its treatment by the Bayer process. These people are the exploration and mining geologists normally associated with aluminum producing companies. The purpose of this paper is to give some idea of how the concentration and physical nature of the different minerals found in bauxites affect the operation of the Bayer process used to extract their alumina content. The bauxites we will consider here will be only the tropical bauxites such as occurring in Jamaica, various countries in South America i.e. Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, African bauxites, Malaysia and in Australia. When we speak of the Bayer process, it will be the North American version of the Bayer process using low caustic concentrations and bauxite digestion temperatures varying between 130° to 250°C. TABLE 1 shows the minerals and elements of interest occurring in tropical bauxites. The minerals and elements listed in the table do not by any means represent all of those identified in bauxites. Using mass spectrographic analysis on six bauxites from different geographic locations, we managed to identify between 50-60 different elements. Fortunately, only about 13-14 of these elements possess the necessary chemical properties to be able to accumulate in caustic Bayer solutions. The remainder are either not attacked, or form insoluble reaction products with some main liquor component, i.e., hydroxide, aluminate or carbonate, or reprecipitate with alumina trihydrate during the precipitation stage.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical's Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Trona occurs naturally in several physical forms in the Green River basin, being both massive and crystal¬line. After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has application for monitoring subsidence with high resolution over short periods. DInSAR uses radar images to measure centimeter-level surface displacements. In the images, ground resolution can be relatively high, with each data point (pixel) representing the average displacement over an area of several square meters. The image data are acquired regularly which allows subsidence to be monitored sequentially over short periods; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.Monitoring subsidence over short periods with high spatial resolution has potential to provide insight into the dynamics of subsidence and into relationships between mine advance and subsidence. In this study, for three longwall mines in the western United States, initial subsidence occurring at the start of longwall advance is quantified over short periods (12 to 72 days). C-band interferometric wide swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the Sentinel satellites are used to quantify the subsidence. Overall, the data show initial development of subsidence, expansion of the subsidence trough, and the advance of subsidence in the direction of mining.INTRODUCTIONApplied Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR)Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote sensing technique that can be used to quantify small displacements of the Earth’s surface. Using data from the Seasat satellite, which was launched in 1978 (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 2018), studies by Goldstein, Zebker, and Werner (1988) and by Gabriel, Goldstein, and Zebker (1989) applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry to topographic mapping and displacement monitoring. These studies established the potential for broader applications of radar interferometry. Studies by Foxall, Sweeney, and Walter (1998), Wright and Stow (1999), and Carnec and Delacourt (2000) represent some of the earliest evaluations of DInSAR for mine subsidence monitoring. All three of the studies demonstrated the application of DInSAR for quantifying mine subsidence. They also demonstrated difficulty accurately measuring subsidence over long periods due to data decorrelation. DInSAR continues to be evaluated as a tool to quantify surface deformation related to active and historic mining. For example, see Vervoort and Declercq (2018), Wempen and McCarter (2017a), Chen et al. (2013), and Liu et al. (2013). Technologies associated with SAR interferometry continue to develop. Recently launched satellites have relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions, and data processing methods and data accessibility are improving."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) can occur as a natural phenome­non through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Oxidation by air and water can be exacerbated by mining. Because AMD can exhib­it low pH, it is capable of extracting heavy metals from mineral deposits. The result is highly acidic drainage with elevated heavy metal concentrations - the combination of which can cause extensive environmental damage. Because of the importance of these factors, this paper is focused on sulfate based AMD. Due to widespread mining, the occurrence of AMD is ubiqui­tous. As a result, several approaches to treatment have been developed. Chemical treatment using alkali is most commonly employed to treat AMD. There are alternative methods of treat­ment, as well as alternative ways of handling treatment sludges or concentrates. Dewatering of sludge or concentrates is beyond the scope of this paper. Within the family of chemical treatment processes, there are three principal recognized methods, namely, "Conventional," "High Density Sludge" (HDS) and "Heavy Metals Removal Process" (HMRP). All three are now employed or specified for treating AMO at mining sites which are being reclaimed under Superfund. Only limited data are available for more specialized chemical treatment processes such as "ferrate", borohydride membrane and electrochemical methods. Therefore, these data are not included here. Performance data for these three processes are presented in this paper and comparison among them is made. Comparisons include consideration of water quality, sludge characteristics, and operational ease. Capital and operational cost comparisons of these processes were addressed in a previous paper by the authors (see bibliography). The results presented here are impo1tant not only to metals mining, but are also applicable to other industries experiencing metals-laden acidic wastes including: coal mining and prepara­tion, metal plating, and electronics circuit board manufacturing. The acceptance of any process should be based on bench scale demonstration before implementation is contemplated. The three processes included herein are discussed in relation to the particular sites at which they are in use, or their use is planned. The sites selected were representative of the various types of processes and the wastewater parameters.

The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

The decade of the 1990s promises to be one of increasing internationalization for domestic minerals producers as they scramble to enhance relative positions in highly competitive, international minerals markets. This "international mining rush" is fueled by developing countries seeking international investment capital to explore for, develop and exploit sizable mineral endowments in an attempt to support the increasingly popular, but expensive, wave of democracy and selfdetermination sweeping the world. This "fuel" typically takes the form of revised mining codes and, often, lucrative investment incentives. These incentives include favorable tax rates, royalty provisions, relaxation of import/ export constraints, depreciation schedules, profit repatriation and other variables that can positively impact mineral investment decision making. Concomitantly, in their attempts to address real and perceived short- and long-term woes associated with enhancing competitive positions internationally, many domestic explorers and producers are attracted to the prospect of finding high-grade deposits in relatively virgin areas. Combined with the investment incentives provided by foreign governments, these high-grade deposits promise lucrative potential returns from projects having short payback periods. Classic examples of this mutual desire to intensify international mining efforts by domestic producers are illustrated by activity levels in countries like Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela in Latin America and, more recently, in Eastern Europe and select locations in the former Soviet Union. As US corporations scurry to send fact-finding, technical, evaluation and financial teams to these presently popular locations, one area of the world has received little attention - Subsaharan Africa. Specifically, the country of Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) deserves more attention than it appears to be receiving from North American mining companies.

The DEAREX knowledge acquisition and engineering system is a teaching and exploration tool designed to facilitate the under- standing and development of expert systems by explorationists without the aid of a knowledge engineer and without recourse to expert system languages. To fulfill its objective, the DEAREX system considers the selection of exploration methods in desert areas. The system consists of three parts: 1. A tutorial which introduces the basic and selected advanced concepts of expert systems, 2. A sample program illustrating how an expert system works and can be used, and, most importantly, 3. A knowledge acqusition and engineering program which enables users to develop their own expert systems. The tutorial provides a brief and concise introduction to expert systems, a 10 rule exploration example which defines, explains and illustrates the basic concepts and design of expert systems, and a glossary of expert system terms including cross references. The sample program is a larger, self contained example of an expert system with some commentary illustrating addition- al expert system concepts and the role of the knowledge engineer in particularizing rules and ascertaining the knowledge base. Restricting itself to the selection of exploration methods in desert areas, the knowledge acquisition and engineering program questions the user and converts the answers into an expert system. Questions pertain to geology, infrastructure, availability of instrumentation, personnel, etc. Additional information may also included. In conclusion, some salient points concerning knowledge engineering toolkits, shells and knowledge acquisition capabilities such as contained in DEAREX are discussed.
