Field prospecting for bauxite in Venezuela has had a long but interrupted history having till now oferred but evidence of occurrences. The Venezuelan Government, trough the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (C.V.G.), in 1974, formalized a major effort in prospection for bauxite in the Shield area and the Orinoco Delta in orden to establish the possibility of raw material supply to an upcoming and expanding aluminium industry. The Corporation, in turn, created and delegated to the Division of Geological Stu- dies, the formulation of the necessary infrastructure and execution of work in orden to determine the existence of economically exploitable bauxite deposits.

All gold occurrences in Tanzania are of Precambrian age and in geological settings similar to gold deposits in other parts the world. The three main areas of interest are perhaps the least prospected of areas of gold mineralization in Precambrian rocks in non- aligned, or market economy nations. Historic production exceeds 77.660 kg (2.5 million oz). Current results by small scale workers go unreported, but have been estimated to be as high as 11.000 kg (350.000 oz) annually. Gold occurs in both lower and upper Precambrian rocks. In the older. gold is associated with greenstones and iron formations typical of many cratonic areas of Precambrian age. The Tanzanian Craton lies in the north west quarter of the country where it is flanked on both east and west sides by mobile belts involving upper Precambrian rocks of high metamorphic grade. Gold occurs in fractures in the western belt within two distinct areas.

In the past two years recent increases in silver prices over levels that prevailed for many years have changed supply/demand patterns. On the supply side, a silver mining boom is in progress in the United States and elsewhere. On the demand side, traditional uses of silver by individuals are dropping while industry is conserving. These changes will alter the supply/demand balance and bring about more moderate rises in silver prices, which in turn will impact the mining industry.

Froth flotation is the most widely-used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50 mm inside diameter column and a 152 mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during coal froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubble in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.

For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.

The copper market has become highly competitive around the world; therefore, operations efficiency is a must for copper producers. The economic outcome in a day-to-day milling is not evident at the concentrator stage, when traditional procedures are used in operations management, based on the supervision of process variables and metallurgical indices. Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

The use of service variables in geostatistics (grade-thickness) is common in industry when developing block grade models and geologic resource estimates. This is particularly true in the case of sedimentary and stratabound-type deposits. The approach has proven merits when assessing ore reserves. However, there are cases where its application for preliminary data analysis produces biased estimates. One such case is encountered in uranium disequilibrium studies. This paper demonstrates the inadequacy of service variables when performing uranium disequilibrium studies. Disequilibrium analysis is a necessary preprocessing step when radiation counts are used as raw data to calculate uranium reserves. Typically, a probe is used to obtain the gamma counts from open drill holes. These counts are then regressed (and corrected) against chemical assays obtained from core samples. During this process the grade-thickness variable produces an optimistic image of the relationship between probe grades and chemical (true) grades, causing overestimation of the final geologic resource. The problem is analyzed through a case study.

Background Results of the above study in the August 1991 issue of Mining Engineering offer valuable lessons in the solution of cutter-roof problems. The original study plan was initiated by the discussion authors to solve the problems using the "stress control method" of mining (Serata 1976,1982; Serata, Carr and Martin, 1984; Serata and Gardner, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Preston, 1986; Serata, Gardner and Shrinivasan,1986; Serata and Kikuchi, 1986; Serata, Preston and Galagoda, 1987) However, the plan and the planner were changed to the arrangement reported in the paper. The change was considered reasonable at the time due to the mine engineers' uncertainties about the stress control method. Consequently, the basic principle of the study was shifted from the original stress control method to the method described in the paper, which will be called the "yield pillar method" for the purposes of this discussion. The paper convinces the reader that the yield pillar method fails to solve the cutter-roof problems. This doesn't mean that the stress control method also fails. Actually the contrary is true, as discussed below. Limitation of the yield pillar method The paper illustrates clearly how poorly the yield pillar method performs in solving the problem. The reason for this failure is the lack of the protective stress envelope needed to stabilize the cutter roof. Unfortunately, the protective envelope cannot be formed properly without utilizing the stress control method of mining. Changing the pillar size does not make much difference in the roof stability.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.

It has been approximately four years since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassified crystalline silica as a "group one" substance. Since then, crystalline silica has been considered a human carcinogen. Silicosis is a preventable disease, and several aggressive campaigns have been developed to increase awareness of silica-dust-related problems in the industrial environment. New analytical techniques are now being developed to determine quantitatively the amount of crystalline silica in materials. Yet, still much is to be learned about the surface properties of silica and the way in which the disease progresses into full-blown silicosis. This paper discusses the interaction of free radicals generated by the mineral particles and lung tissue. It is the cell injury and DNA damage that progresses to fibrogenesis. Freshly fractured surfaces of silica contain free radicals. These free radicals play an important role in the stimulation of the alveolar macrophage and the development of the inflammatory reactions leading to the fibrotic response caused by silica. Engineers, scientists and physicians need to discuss the mineralogy of silica and the technical issues concerning the development of silicosis.

One of the least discussed areas in the ever-improving technologies of gold recovery from ore bodies and tailings is the chemistry of the waters used in the plants. Carbon-in­ pulp, carbon-in-leach, heap/dump leaching and iological oxidation processes are all affected by water quality. The remoteness of a lot of the plants means that the large water requirements can often only be met by a ground water source. The chemistry of waters from different sources poses different problems, but generally a lot of these waters are scale forming. Scale-forming tendencies can be described by calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium assays. They can be notated by Langelier and Ryznar indices. They can be plotted by computer programmes that print out scaling indices at different conditions. The propensity to scale can -be readily determined. The prevention of scaling -or at worst minimisation of scaling -is the ambition of the suppliers of scale inhibition programmes. This prevention/minimisation technology is discussed below.

Introduction Democratic countries are founded on the principle that all citizens have the right to participate in policy setting and decision-making processes. Citizen participation is especially evident in environmental issues and policies. In the United States, there are currently over 10,000 environmental organizations and new ones are being formed each year. Many of these organizations are formed on a watershed basis and are particularly concerned about the impact mining has on the environment. While the environmental issues vary from area to area, most concerns center around mining impacts related to subsidence, water pollution, and water diversion. Citizens have a number of avenues for participating in lawmaking that affects the mining industry. Some of these avenues include participation in litigation and citizen ballot initiatives. In addition, there are less formal methods of participation that include attending public meetings, commenting on agency rules or lobbying on specific legislation. The intent of this article is outline the various public participations mechanisms, highlight the latest legal developments that have affected mining industry through citizen participation, and briefly discuss emerging issues.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The methodology of heap leaching established at Rio Tinto in Spain more than 300 years ago is basically the same as that used today. In situ mining and extraction is one of the Frontier Technologies that is destined to play an increasingly important role in the recovery of metals and minerals in the future. This premise is based on increasing costs of labor and energy, increasing awareness of environmental considerations and decreasing ore grades in the United States. Up to now, in situ mining has been successfully applied to a few favorable situations for the extraction of some evaporites, copper and uranium. However, because of its unique technical, environmental and economic advantages, this versa tile technology will find broader applications for the recovery of above commodities as well as for others which are currently extracted by hydrometallurgical means. This paper traces the development of in situ mining and extraction; stresses its dependence on interdisciplinary science and engineering; discusses its theoretical, practical and economic aspects; and finally presents potential applications of this Frontier Technology.

Recent U.S. mine disasters identified a need for improved training of miners in escape from mine fires and explosions. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) have designed fire-escape training software for use in a mine-safety training course. The software allows four trainees to work together in a virtual world via a computer network. Trainees responded favorably and showed a marked improvement in locating the proper evacuation routes on subsequent trials. In collaboration with the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), a more elaborate fire evacuation scenario is being developed. One of the steps in an ore reserve estimate is customarily a rigorous calculation of the in situ grade of the orebody itself. The result of this calculation is usually reduced by some purely arbitrary factor to force the calculation to agree with the observed grade of ore actually mined. The failure of the calculation to realistically depict the grade of ore actually extracted is in many instances not the result of either an incorrect calculation procedure or of sloppy mining practice, but is a direct consequence of unsuspected irregularities in the contact between the orebody and the surrounding wall rock. A pattern of holes spaced at 1.5-3.Om foot intervals, drilled as part of a pre-development program, will often reveal that a presumed "regular' ore/waste contact is, in fact, so highly irregular that it will be next to impossible to separate ore from waste during mining. In such an instance, 'fingers' of waste projecting into the mining block will substitute for equal volumes of ore left outside the mining limits. As a result, the grade of material actually mined will be less than the grade envisioned for the orebody. The volume of waste substituting for ore in the mining block is about 0.4X, where X = the average error in projecting the ore/waste contact between alternate holes in the test pattern, and is expressed in units of volume per unit of area of the contact surface.

The copper-silver-mercury orebody of Gortdrum Mines (Ireland) Limited is located 3 miles north of the town of Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. A drilling programme from 1964 to 1966 delineated an ore¬body of 4.19 million tons of copper ore assaying 1.19% Cu and 0.75 ozs per ton Ag, which could be mined from an open pit. Testwork having shown that the ore was amenable to conventional flotation techniques, it was decided to build a concentrator of 500,000 tons ore per year capacity. Stripping of the open pit commenced in 1966 and in the autumn of 1967 the concentrator started up. The first shipments of concentrates were made to the smelter in Europe in late 1967. In the spring of the following year, word was received from the smelter that these early shipments contained between 1% and 2% Hg, and that the smelter could not accept further shipments of this quality.
