Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

Uranium and its decay series are associated with phosphate deposits of marine origin. Uranium concentrations are on the order of 100 to 200 ppm in matrix from the Bone Valley formation of Central Florida and about 25% this value in matrix mined from the Hawthorne formation in North Florida. Occupational radiation exposure due to this source has been under study in Florida since the mid 1970's (Windham, Partridge, Horton 1976; Roessler and Prince 1978). This report is based on findings of an industry-wide scoping survey conducted by the University of Florida during March 1976 through May 1977 and subsequent studies in selected individual facilities. PHOSPHATE MINING OPERATIONS Mining and beneficiation operations are diagramed in Figure 1. At the excavation site, electric powered draglines remove the overburden and expose the phosphate matrix (ore) which is then slurried and pumped to the beneficiation site. At the washer stage of the beneficiation plant, the matrix is subjected to washing and screening. A coarse product, "pebble" is produced and sent to storage piles while the fine fraction is passed through a series of cyclones to remove the clays. The generated clay suspension is sent to settling ponds while the remaining sand-sized fraction is sent to the flotation plant. At the flotation plant, phosphate particles are recovered from the fine sand particles of similar size through several stages of treatment with reagents, agitation and separation of floating and sinking fractions. The high grade concentrate produced is transferred to storage while the sand tailings are discarded. [ ]

Strategic Data Planning (SDP) is an emerging technique for the analysis and design of information systems. This paper describes the use of strategic data planning in the formulation of a complete integrated set of mining technical systems for the Koolan Island iron ore mine. Applications covered include hydrogeology, geology, mine planning, surveying, quality control, laboratory and mine production recording. Koolan Island is 13 kilometres long and 5.5 kilometres wide at its widest point. Its sole industry is an open pit iron ore mine of 3 million tonnes annual capacity, owned and operated by BHP Minerals. Some of the production is used by BHP Steel International, but most is exported. The orebody is steeply dipping and is mined bench by bench. Outturn grades for run-of-mine product are iron 66.5%, silica 3.0%, alumina 1.0%. Computer systems are run on Data General equipment, currently an MV10000. Computer applications, which are shared across mine sites, are developed and maintained by BHP Information Systems in BHP's Melbourne Office.

There is a broad range of chemical reagents of potential use to the coal preparation industry: flotation frothers, flotation collectors (for coal, ash minerals or pyrite) and collector-assisting (conditioning) agents, flotation depressants (for coal, ash minerals or pyrite), pH regulating agents, acid mine drainage treatment chemicals, flocculants, filtration aids, dispersants, dust suppressants (wetting agents and car-top or pile binders), freeze conditioning agents, water treatment chemicals (corrosion and scale inhibitors) and suspension stabilizing reagents (dispersants, stabilizers, biocides). The application of each of these types is discussed with particular attention paid to those of greatest importance: flotation frothers and collectors, pH regulators and acid mine drainage treatment chemicals, flocculants and freeze conditioning agents.

INTRODUCTION Shotcrete behavior observed in subway tunnel construction in the U. S. has been primarily in blocky or blocky and seamy rock in which rock loads develop from the self weight of individual rock blocks that tend to loosen from the wall and roof of the opening. Such conditions can be classed as loosening ground, in contrast to squeezing ground in which high pressures are generated on the tunnel lining with time as the ground creeps under the natural ground stresses. In the philosophy often associated with the New Austrian Tunneling method, emphasis is placed on the use of shotcrete and other support elements in squeezing, highly stressed ground, in which the support system is designed to allow controlled movements so that high lining stresses do not develop. West Virginia's economy has been closely linked with coal. West Virginia is consistently one of the top three coal-producing states. Its 149 Mt (164 mil¬lion st) produced in 1992 represented 16.5% of total US coal production. In recent years, the state's economy has experienced a diversification away from its traditional employment base of min¬ing and heavy manufacturing. However, the coal industry remains an integral part of the lives of West Virginians. Coal is mined in 33 of the state's 55 counties. In many of these counties, the coal industry is the largest private employer and contributor to the economy. West Virginia has three major coal-producing regions. The northern region produces coal high in gas and sulfur content (steam coal). It is consumed primarily by utility and industrial markets. The southeast region produces high-grade coal low in sulfur content but high in carbons and Btu (metallurgical coal). The southwest region produces metallurgical and steam coal. The high-grade metallurgical coal is used in the production of coke for steel manufacturing. Metallurgical coal also comprises the majority of coal exported from the United States. During 1993, West Virginia was the country's largest exporter of coal, accounting for 44.5% of total US coal exports.

Liquids containing suspended solids are encountered in most mineral processing applications. Solids levels cover a very wide range, from ppm levels in cooling water systems to slurries containing greater than 70% solids. When the aqueous phase is recycled or further processed, a solid/liquid separation process is used. Chemical additives used to carry out this process are called coagulants and flocculants. In other cases, one seeks to control or modify the properties of the suspension. Dispersants are chemicals used to aid in suspending solids in a liquid as well as to control the properties of the resulting suspension. Dispersants find a range of uses in mining and mineral processing such as scale control, filter aids, flotation aids, and slurry viscosity modification. Materials used as dispersants include inorganic salts, alkalies, organic surfactants, and polyelectrolytes. This paper discusses the use of dispersants in mineral processing, with an emphasis on control of slurry viscosity. The mechanism of dispersion and factors that affect the choice of dispersant will be discussed.

Igarape Bahia Mine, which is currently the largest gold producer in Brazil, belongs to Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and is situated 250 miles south of Belem, state of Para, Brazil. It came into operation in 1992 with the startup of the CIP plant, fed with high grade ore, presently at 3.4gAu/t. The ore is totally oxidized, containing extremely fine particles of free gold. The ore is soft and low cyanide consumer, with a maximum work index of 12kwh/sht. In 1993 a Heap Leaching Plant was set into operation, handling low grade ore of · 1.s g Ault. The Heap Leaching Plant has undergone two major expansions. In 1994 its capacity was raised from lMtpy to 2,2Mtpy and in 1998, with a thorough remodeling of crushing operations, it was raised again to 3.5Mtpy. The CIP plant, which was originally designed with a capacity for l. lMtpy of ore, was expanded to a 2.2Mtpy capacity in 1994. Presently, the CIP plant accounts for most of Igarape Bahia's total gold output, with approximately 220,000oz per year. Igarape Bahia's annual output is around 360.000 oz. Over the last three years, work has been intensified to improve performance of both processes, aiming at maximizing productivity of the two industrial plants. Reduced costs and increased revenues have been given a special emphasis in the unified improvement program. Cost · reduction has involved developing methodologies to rationalize consumption of materials and inputs, while increased productivity has been given top priority as a means of generating increasing revenues. Thus, all of the improvement and development efforts have had a common goal: to increase operating income.

Introduction The impact of computers on individuals and businesses increases each day. And the mining industry is no exception. The growing number of short courses, symposia, and feature articles in journals on the subject of computers is indicative of the developments and interest in their application to mining. Given this interest and the growing importance of computers, a legitimate concern is the computing background of graduating mining engineers. Based on a sample survey, this paper presents the current status of computer education in Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET)-accredited mining engineering programs in the US. Specific topics addressed include hardware and software available to students, integration of computers into curricula, concerns of mining educators, and historical and anticipated trends in computing education. Methodology Nine of the 19 ABET accredited mining engineering schools (as published in the SME-AIME Guide to Minerals Schools) were surveyed. Interviews consisting of open-ended questions were conducted with a knowledgeable faculty member from each of these schools. This was done to obtain an overall view of computing in mining engineering programs. The intent was not to evaluate nor compare individual schools, so a complete census was deemed unnecessary. The minimal deviations between the responses to the subjective questions reinforces the credibility of the sample as being representative. Results Hardware Most of the mining engineering schools polled had access to hardware on three scales - mainframe computers available university wide, minicomputers available in the college or department, and microcomputers available at all three levels. Without exception, each school had access to mainframe and microcomputers. Minicomputers, however, were not available at every school. The mainframe computers have been in place the longest. The predominant mainframe currently on campuses is the IBM model. Mainframes were once the essence of all applications. But the improved availability and capabilities of smaller machines have afforded users a viable alternative. The increasing practice in education of assessing charges for time used on the mainframe - as opposed to no charge for time on the mini- and microcomputers - makes use of the smaller machines attractive. Conversely, much of the mining engineering software is only operational on mainframes. Sometimes this restriction exists because the requisite speed or storage inherent in the software can only be met by the mainframe. More often, however, it is because the software was developed when mainframes were the only machines available, and it has not yet been adapted to run on a smaller machine. At the schools polled, many mining engineering problems that are well suited to microcomputers are being solved on mainframes simply because microcomputer software is not available. Minicomputers are available at the department or college level in many mining programs. DEC is the most popular make. Often, the minicomputers were installed to alleviate the inconveniences of attempting to access and use an overcrowded mainframe, to avoid being charged for time used on the mainframe, and to meet the needs of a specific research project. The minicomputers are currently used much more for research than for teaching applications. Therefore, minis are seldom used by undergraduate students. Microcomputers have become extremely popular at mining schools within the last five years. Generally, some form of computing policy or strategy was established near the time the first microcomputers were purchased. This was formulated in part to ensure consistency, or at least compatibility, in the type of machines acquired. "Stabilization" of copper differs from sin in at least one respect - no one seems to be against it. Every time a tycoon in the producing industry pontificates on the economic history of copper, or prophesies its future, he is likely to praise the virtues of "stabilization". Consumers of copper constantly bemoan fluctuations in the supply and price of the metal. Governments in some producing countries, to a greater or lesser degree dependent upon exports of copper for foreign exchange and upon taxation of copper profits for substantial parts of their budgets, are perhaps more eager than any other group for "stabilization".

Introduction Mineral recovery from an in situ leaching operation is determined by the often complex interaction of hydrology, mass transport, and chemical kinetics. The operating conditions of many pilot and production scale uranium leaching operations involve heterogeneities in aquifer permeability. Differences in permeability may be naturally occurring, the result of differences in main size or cementation, or they may be induced by leaching activity. Variations in permeability directly affect the fluid flow streamline pattern, fluid flux, and so also leaching geochemistry and uranium recovery. An in situ leaching hydrology model (ISL) and a mass transport-oxidation rate model (ISLGC) have been developed for use in making site specific predictions of the leachability and productive potential of heterogeneous ore deposits, and for the optimal design of leachant injection and recovery operations. The two models are linked by output and input requirements. The ISL hydrology model generates a leachant flow streamline pattern between injection and recovery points in a flow domain incorporating regions of arbitrary permeability. The ISLGC transport model describes the changing solution concentrations of uranium and oxygen and the changing mineral concentrations of uranium and pyrite resulting from convection, longitudinal dispersion, and oxidation reactions. "The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

Since the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro and the publication of the agenda 21, the concept of Sustainable Development has become one of the major issues for governmental politics, societal developments and entrepreneurial policies. Current projects that deal with Sustainable Development in the mineral raw materials sector mainly focus on large-scale mining operations - especially for open pit mining - or on artisanal small scale mining. Artisanal small scale mining is in this connexion characterised as non-mechanized and mostly illegal mining activities. The number of workers is mostly far below 20. However, until now there exist no assessments or analyses with respect to the actual or potential contribution of industrial small scale mining to sustainable development. Industrial small scale mining refers to high technology or highly mechanized/automated extraction of small, high-grade deposits that due to their small size ? in combination with geological, depth and other constraints ? are not economically exploitable with large-scale mining operations. The Institute of Mining Engineering I and the Institute for Processing of Mineral Raw Materials at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany is currently conducting a research project financed by the German Research Foundation in order to investigate this issue. In the course of this project the sustainability of industrial small scale mining will be assessed. Therefore sustainability indicators, an assessment system and recommendations as well as options for actions and policies will be developed, in order to evaluate current industrial small scale mining activities as well as the potential for future developments in industrial small scale mining, both from a technological as well as from the point of view of sustainability, considering economical, social and environmental chances and risks.

The degree of fragmentation of dispersed systems of brittle materials such as pulverised rock has been described by a fractal dimension i.e. the fragmentation fractal. This fractal dimension represents a power law size-frequency distribution, where, in this case, the size is defined as the square root of the projected area. The existence of a fractal dimension for the number-size distribution, of the progeny of failure event, is direct evidence for scale invariance of the fragmentation process. Since a fractal dimension infers that failure mechanisms operate on all scales it has been suggested that the fractal dimension is a measure of the fracture resistance properties of materials during fragmentation. In order to investigate this a range of rocks of varying fracture toughness were broken under similar levels of impact velocity in the dynamic tensile failure of single particles. The fragmentation fractals determined from the resultant particle populations, of the breakage experiments, were monitored and are discussed.

The percent ash in a coal blend is equal to the weighted average of the ash contents of the component coals. If the raw coals differ in washability characteristics, the total yield may be maximized by washing the component coals to different quality levels. A mathematical basis for blend maximization is developed and a computer program is described The program determines the component weights that maximize the yield, while meeting an individual coal-quality specification. The procedure is directly applicable to linear parameters of grade quality such as percent ash, percent sulfur and the calorific value. A transformation of variables permits program execution to meet a sulfur-compliance specification. Blends may consist of any number of component coals.

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

The present work emphasizes the selection in the separation of the apatite/calcite by the direct anionic flotation versus the double flotation, with a reverse second stage of the Jacupiranga phosphate ore. The double flotation would allow the obtaining of two concentrated solutions: one of them mainly constituted by a calcium carbonate material (CaCO3) and the other one, phosphatic (apatite). The calcium carbonate concentrated solution is used for the production of cement. The presence of phosphatic material in the calcium solution is not desirable, phosphor being a harmful element to cement. On the other hand, smaller quantities of calcite in the phosphate concentrate would represent a substantial economy in the processes of production of phosphated fertilizers. These processes make use of sulfuric acid to the solubilization of the apatite and the presence of calcium material consumes acid. Also that, when carbonates are solubilized, unwanted products are formed resulting in losses in the process and diminishing the quality of the fertilizer produced. These characteristics are discussed in the paper and are compared to another Brazilian phosphate ore, the reverse route of which can be considered more adequate. The results are discussed according to recent discoveries, and special emphasis is given to the use of corn starch and its crucial role in promoting the selection in the direct flotation process.

The Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River is part of a vast geologic and hydrologic province. The abundance of water available is largely responsible for the agricultural history of the area and is perhaps the key factor in the rapidly accelerating trend toward industrialization. The multiple artesian aquifer systems that underlie the region, and the alluvial aquifer along the Mississippi River are virtually undeveloped sources of fresh water in that they are yielding only a fraction of the water available. The potential yield of the 12 aquifer systems is estimated to be about 25,000 mgd (million gallons per day), of which only about 600 mgd is presently being withdrawn. The amount of water in storage in these systems is about 1,600 trillion gallons. Ground water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 parts per million is generally available at depths of less than 1,000 feet, and water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 1,000 parts per million is available in some places to depths of more than 3,000 feet. Iron is the most common troublesome chemical constituent in the ground water. Water in varying amounts is also available from streams within the region. The amount of water which originates within the region and which leaves it as streamflow during a year averages about 50 million acre-feet (about 45,000 mgd). An additional 375 million acre-feet (about 340,000 mgd) leaves the region as streamflow during an average year, this amount having originated outside of the region. Some streams have considerable flow during periods of no precipitation, and the water during these periods generally has a low dissolved-solids content.
