Many companies in North America because of economic or environmental reasons are considering reprocessing material from their waste ponds. The Japanese have developed highly specialized machines and techniques to reprocess industrial/mining wastes from settling ponds. This paper discusses the techniques and results of applying this technology to North American applications.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. The Stanreck mine of Stanreck Uranium Mines Limited in located on Quirks Lake in the Elliot lake - Blind River area of Northern Ontario. It is approximately 25 miles north of the north shore of Lake Huron, equidistant between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The property was developed ad brought into production at a rate of 3,000 tens of ore/day during the uranium boom of the mid 1950's. By 1960 mine waters were becoming quite acid through the activity of bacteria. Treatment of this water was begun for pollution control and a small amount of uranium which had been leached from the ore by these acid waters was recovered. Development of bacterial leaching with a view to increasing production by this method commenced in December 1962. Subsequently, it was succeesfull in producing 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. of U308/month. Since late 1964 uranium production has been obtained solely from bacterial leaching. A rare earth concentrate was also made for its yttrium content during 1966 and 1967. This paper describes the development, operation and methods used in the underground bacterial leaching process.

From 1997 through 2000, a team of Polish experts headed by the author studied the prospects of mining newly discovered emerald deposits in Afghanistan. This article describes the scheme for mechanization of the mining operations, along with improvements made to the ventilation facilities and lighting. The required equipment was flown to Afghanistan and the Afghan miners were trained in machine operation and maintenance.

This study is carried out in the Zenit mining concession, which is located in the city of San Pablo in the department of Cajamarca in Peru. The Project has 33 mineralized structures and according to laboratory analyzes we have the presence of gold and silver. The geostatistical evaluation provides an analysis on the distribution of precious metals in the vein. This information is used to improve the efficiency of metal extraction and to reduce costs. The general objective is to evaluate the polymetallic veins (Au and Ag), for which the classification of resources (measured, indicated, and inferred) has been carried out, taking into account the parameters of minimum distance from the composite, corresponding volume and tonnage calculation. In addition, an inventory of estimated geological resources was carried out with the block grades obtained to generate the tonnage-grade curves.

In the summer of 1990, a study was conducted to document large tractor (i.e., Caterpillar Dl1N) utilization in surface coal mining. The tractors were found to be utilized as primary production machines and in combination systems with blast casting and draglines and blast casting and excavator/truck systems. In addition, dozers were used to prebench ahead of a primary dragline system. The study also established ranges and averages for Dl1N operating costs and mechanical availability. Based on simulated production of various tractor dozing applications, the potential for low cost coal stripping was suggested (Hrebar, 1991). A follow-up study, also funded by Caterpillar Inc., was conducted in the summer of 1991 to determine actual production rates in two dozer stripping applications. These actual production rates would then serve as a foundation for estimates of stripping costs. This paper presents the results of the studies in a contour and a cast application.

The phosphate mining industry is confronted everywhere in the world with financial difficulties and low prices which prohibit further investments and development of new mines even in regions with a comparative cost advantage (North America/ North Africa/ and Middle East). But old mines are being progressively exhausted/ and if no replacement mines come on stream in the near future/ we may soon find ourselves (around the year 2000) with a global annual production capacity of 160 million tonnes of marketable phosphate rock instead of the capacity of 200 million tonnes existing today. Unless prices improve/ phosphate rock/ a non-renewable resource and a vital commodity to world agriculture/ may turn to be in short supply to world fertilizer industry. Whatever the extent of recovery of fertilizer demand/ the expected decline of the production capacity during the 1990 I s is bound to cause the disappearance by the year 2000 of the important surplus characterizing today the supply/demand balance.

SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

The last few years have produced new methods of characterizing flow properties of bulk solids. Abrasive wear and particle attrition can now be accurately measured in a laboratory and scaled up to field condi¬tions. In addition, the effect of large par¬ticles on a material's flow properties (cohe¬sive strength, bulk density, wall friction) can be determined as well as the effects of var¬ious additives such as freeze conditioning agents. New developments have occurred with devices to improve the reliability of solids flow. Much attention has been paid to find¬ing ways, by using inserts, to provide a mass flow pattern with relatively shallow hopper walls. Such devices can also provide reli¬able in-bin gravity blending of bulk solids or completely nonsegregated discharge. Other developments have occurred in the area of belt-to-belt transfer chutes and sealing screws. The technology and hardware for running bench scale flow tests on bulk solids samples and transforming the results into reliable designs has been in existence for nearly 30 years (Jenike, 1964; Marinelli and Carson, 1986). It has been shown repeatedly that reliable materials handling systems can be designed to avoid the problems of no-flow due to arching or rat-holing, erratic flow, segregation, loss of capacity, or spontaneous combustion. Running flow properties tests and carefully designing a bulk handling system are not expensive, particularly when compared to downtime costs and continual flow problems. New developments in characterizing flow properties of bulk solids include: • a shear tester for measuring the properties of run-of-mine ores containing large par¬ticles; • attrition testers to simulate a wide range of flow conditions; • a tester to measure the wear rate of liners in bins, feeder parts, etc.; • a dustiness tester to measure the potential for dust and the effect of dust control meas¬ures; and • techniques for measuring the strength of frozen ores and the effect of freeze condi¬tioning agents. In the area of improving the flow of bulk solids, there are new techniques for ensuring reliable flow without using up excessive headroom. These include: • belt-to-belt transfer chutes to handle po¬tentially sticky, abrasive, and dusty ores; • designs for the interface between a bin/ hopper and apron or belt feeders to avoid hangups and minimize feeder loads; methods to feed solids reliably into a pres¬surized process; and designs for handling systems that will mini¬ mize attrition, avoid segregation, or auto¬matically blend materials together. Characterizing flow properties Large shear cell It has long been known that the cohesive strength of a bulk solid is due mainly to its fine fraction. However, the effect of the larger particles (that were assumed to re¬duce the strength) could not be measured. The development of larger scale (205 mm¬diam and 0.6 x 0.9 m or 8 in.-diam and 2 x 3 ft) shear testers has made it possible to measure the properties of a wider range of materials. Now cohesive strength measurements can be made with up to 100 mm (4 in.) particles. The results obtained from the large shear testers, together with the results of the nor¬mal shear tests on the fine fraction, are used in the design of reliable stockpile reclaim systems and crusher feed systems. A high percentage of large particles can reduce the measured shear strength of a bulk solid. Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

During 1964 and 1965 a mineral exploration program was carried out over an area of approximately 250 square miles, located in the Anvil-Vangorda Creek area of east central Yukon, 125 miles northwest of Whitehorse. The Vangorda deposit, a massive lead-zinc sulphide body discovered in 1953, was centred in the area proposed for exploration, a northwest trending belt located between the southwestern flank of the Anvil Range and Pelly River. Exploration for base metals in the remote Anvil area had previously been restricted by poor metal markets in the late 1950's. Regional geologic information was also limited except for publication of a scale 1 inch to 4 mile map by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. To effectively explore this area, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methods were essential due to extensive overburden cover varying in depth from a few feet to over 300 feet. (Figure (i) Key Map) Dynasty Explorations initiated the first comprehensive regional exploration program in the Anvil area, utilizing saturation prospecting methods employing geologic, geochemical and geophysical methods. The program involved an approach demanding continual modification of technical and physical logistics. After a total of 12 months of field work involving an expenditure of approximately $450,00, massive sulphides were discovered which subsequently proved to be an economic orebody. Thirteen properties had been acquired and explored. Ten separate geophysical anomalies had been outlined by a combination of magnetic, electric and gravimetric survey techniques of which five were tested by rotary drilling and two by diamond core drilling. The discovery of the Faro deposit was a direct result of this program.

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

The need for improved safety and productivity brought about the introduction of longwall mining to the Appalachian coal fields. These same forces continue to drive developments in modern longwall equipment and mining practices. Current initiatives to improve productivity and safety are focused on automation and the effects of scale in equipment design. Longwall roof-supports, shearers and face-conveyors have changed significantly. Panel layouts have evolved to include larger total tonnages and provide for more rapid development of gate-entries. These advancements have improved longwall productivity and new production records are continually being set. Roof supports Reliability is implicit in the quest for automation. It is impossible to automate equipment if it is not reliable. To a large degree, this has been the problem with longwall shield automation efforts. The "electronic control" of shields depends on the proper functioning of electronic equipment, electrohydraulic valves and full-flow service valves onboard every support.

Rapidly searching for carbonatite-related rare earth element (REE) mineralized systems is of paramount importance to explorers, because these systems provide the world’s most significant supply of REE. Biotite and barite are suitable indicator minerals that can offer reliable elemental geochemical information used for REE exploration. In this study, we provided an elemental geochemical dataset of biotite and barite from Cenozoic REE deposits in the eastern Tibetan Plateau, and compared the obtained data to those of biotite and barite forming in other geological settings. The F (i.e., fluorine) contents in carbonatite-hosted biotites are highly variable, with biotites from mineralized carbonatite complexes having much higher values (1.05–2.37 apfu, where apfu = atoms per formula unit) than their counterparts from barren carbonatite complexes (≤ 1 apfu). It is therefore believed that the presence of high-F biotites can be regarded as a sign for predicting REE reservoirs. Barites in REE mineralized systems contain much higher (even one or to orders of magnitude) total REE contents (ΣREE >100 μg/g) relative to those species forming in carbonate-hosted fluorite-barite deposits and open marine environments. This means that the high ΣREE concentration of barite can serve as an effective index for REE exploration. The above information is integrated into a REE exploration program in which the areas with strong local tectonism along cratonic edges are priority exploration targets, and high-F biotites and REE-rich barites can serve as direct indices for rapidly identifying carbonatiterelated REE mineralized systems at a strategic distance from other geological settings.

The closure of TSF represents a critical milestone in the life cycle of mining operations, requiring the integration of technical, environmental, and social dimensions to ensure long-term safety and sustainability. The GISTM introduces the concept of “safe closure” as a demonstrable technical condition in which there are no ongoing material risks to people or the environment. This status must be validated by an independent technical reviewer and formally approved by the Accountable Executive. This article presents a risk-based methodology to support the achievement of safe closure, aligned with the principles and requirements of the GISTM. The proposed approach emphasizes the need to identify, assess, and manage closure and post-closure risks progressively throughout all phases of the TSF life cycle: from site selection and design, through construction and operation, to closure implementation and long-term monitoring. The methodology integrates key elements of effective risk management, including comprehensive knowledge bases, consideration of climate change, credible failure modes, continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and governance. The ALARP principle is applied to demonstrate that residual risks have been reduced to tolerable levels. By incorporating closure planning from the earliest stages and adopting a risk-based view throughout the entire life cycle, this methodology aims to support mining organizations in achieving a verifiable and responsible closure of tailings facilities, in line with international best practices such as those of ANCOLD and ICOLD. The proposed framework offers a practical contribution to strengthening the credibility, effectiveness, and sustainability of tailings closure processes.

The mining industry responded to public concerns about use of cyanide by developing a voluntary certification to allow companies to demonstrate their commitment. The International Cyanide Code (Code) establishes standards for the manufacture, transportation and use of cyanide. Key concepts in closure planning to comply with the Code are to decommission all facilities related to cyanide operations and to provide a financial assurance mechanism for those activities. Code requirements may differ from state-specific regulations, but requirements are based on closure goals for protection of the human health and the environment. Only issues related to cyanide operations are required to be included in decommissioning demonstrations. For example, the disposal method of cyanide solution holding tanks and the cost must be included in the closure plan, but information regarding closure of roads is not required. Closure costs must be based on a third-party contractor as opposed to internal budgets. Compliance with the closure requirements of the Code allows companies to show their stockholders, lending institutions, and the public that their operations are environmentally responsible.

The art of excavating tunnels with continuous, full-face boring machines began almost 90 years ago, in the early 1880's. At this time, Colonel Beaumont designed and manufactured a seven-foot diameter tunneler for boring under the English Channel, Despite the absence of modern materials and manufacturing techniques, Beaumont's tunneler, powered by compressed air piped in from the surface, was quite successful. During its short, but impressive existence, this machine set a record of advancing in chalk 50 feet per day for 53 days - which is impressive even by today's standards. Despite the apparent success of this early tunneler, almost 80 years passed before any further significant development was accomplished in this field. Demands from the construction and mining industry and society itself have motivated the development of the modern tunneling machine. Our rapidly growing civilization needs faster, less expensive and safer means of excavating tunnels. Space age technology and materials have played a major role in making hardrock tunneling machines possible.

Vast deposits of lignite occur in the Gulf Coast states and northern plain states. Lignite resources are cited to be over 43 billion tons in the Gulf Coast states. An additional resource of 16 billion tons are reported in North Dakota (Jackson, Smith, 1981). All lignite in the U.S. is mined at present by the open pit method. Draglines and scrapers are primarily used to remove the overburden. Bucket-wheel excavators are also being considered for new mines in the planning stages. Lignite seams are mined using front-end loaders, shovels and trucks, or Easi-miners. The depositional environment of lignite is weak sedimentary soils and rock. Ground water is often encountered within the mining depth. Surface water resulting from heavy rainfall or snow melt contributes to the problems of mining. Mining depths of up to 60 m (200 ft) are under consideration. Draglines exert additional loads on the highwalls and spoil piles. The combination of any number of these factors may cause instability of the slopes. Bearing pressure, trafficability, and settlement can also be a problem for excavation and loading equipment.
