In-situ leaching of uranium by aqueous ammonium carbonate containing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as oxidant results in the partial dissolution of sulfides. While some of the sulfide sulfur is oxidized to sulfate, a considerable portion is oxidized only to thiosulfate and polythionates. Polythionates poison the anion exchange resin used to extract uranium. At the Palangana operation in southeast Texas, the trithionate ion (S3062-) was found by infrared spectrometry to be the major resin poison. Treatment of ion exchange feed solutions with hydrogen peroxide only resulted in partial conversion of reduced sulfur species to sulfate, and trithionate conversion was particularly slow. Poisoning of the resin also occurred from the ammonium chloride eluant, which built up trithionate because of recycling. This was essentially eliminated by chlorinating the eluant prior to yellow cake precipitation.

This presentation in the open pit session deals with the development of a phosphate rock strip mine by CF Industries, Inc., a company that does not presently mine in the Central Florida Phosphate District. Land acquisition, engineering, financing and environmental permitting activities were begun in early 1975; site preparation, environmental monitoring and dragline construction began in mid-1975. The operation is due on-stream in late 1978. The reserve acquisition, permitting, and financing could each easily be developed into a separate paper of interest. Each, however, has been covered before for other mining ventures with similar capital and environment requirements. For that reason, I have chosen to discuss what CF Industries, Inc. is, why it is entering this new sec-tor of the agricultural chemicals business, and, to keep at least some technical basis, what design modifications are possible when the total mine output is used captively and it is unnecessary to have the flexibility to meet the numerous transportation and customer specification considerations. In an attempt to show the size and complexity of the CF organization, a brief description of existing facilities should help show why the big interest in mining phosphate rock.

There is a continuing debate about the influence of circulating load and classifier efficiency on the capacity of the circuit. Specifically, the effects of preferential classification, bypassed fines, and the sharpness of classification will be examined. Horizontal cyclones have also proven to be very successful in a number of operations but their impact on the circuit capacity has not been clearly defined.

The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

The choice of TBM type is never easy, but it becomes especially challenging when faced with a hard rock tunnel with expected high water flows and pressure. Slurry Shield tunneling has a long history of being used in these conditions to minimize the risk, though this method has brought with it other risks along with cost considerations. At recent projects around the world, another method has been proven to effectively manage these project risks without utilizing Slurry Shield tunneling: Shielded, NonContinuous Pressurized (NCP)-TBM tunneling in rock with a comprehensive grouting program. In this paper, the authors will analyze the use of Shielded NCP TBMs at projects around the world as compared with slurry shield tunneling in rock under water pressure. Recommendations will be given in order to establish a clear picture of the optimal tunneling method.

Introduction Longwall coal mining in the US has steadily increased since its introduction in 1960. There are now 108 systems operating. (Sprouls, 1986). Advantages of longwall mining include higher productivity, improved safety, and greater coal recovery. Respirable dust, however, is one of the more serious obstacles to realizing the full potential of longwall mining. Early in 1980, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) initiated extensive in-house and contract research to identify and evaluate effective methods of controlling respirable dust exposure of longwall face personnel (Niewiadomski, Jankowski, and Kissell, 1981). It was found that several control procedures must be combined to assure compliance, using control techniques appropriate to the dust source. These techniques can typically be grouped into the following categories: reduction of dust generation; dilution of dust; capture or knockdown of dust; and dust avoidance. Control techniques can be divided into basic and effective dust control techniques; additional necessary controls; and optional supplementary controls. This information should allow longwall mine operators to select control methods applicable to their particular operations and to develop a dust control plan that meets Federal dust standards. Basic and effective dust control techniques There are three basic dust control techniques (Taylor and Jankowski, 1982) that should be implemented on all longwall mining operations. • A passive barrier or external water spray system design that confines shearer generated dust near the face and away from the operators. • Large quantities of water through the sprays, particularly the drum sprays, to aid in dust knockdown and prevent dust becoming airborne. • A cutting sequence that allows the shearer operators to work primarily on the intake-air side of the lead cutting drum. Shearer clearer There are some poorly designed shearer-mounted spray systems with nozzles directed upwind at the cutting and loading zone of the intake-side drum. These actually carry dust away from the face and upstream of the drum. Where, it mixes with the clean intake air (Fig. la,) and is carried out into the walkway over the shearer operators. A nano-scale investigation has been carried out by applying an AFM (atomic force microscope) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it contacts the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb on bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on bastnaesite. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) results also show that all these collectors adsorb strongly on bastnaesite with a strong absorbance spectra being detected, which confirms with the results obtained with AFM imaging analysis. In general, hydroxamic acid collector (HA and SHA) adsorbs on bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite. INTRODUCTION Rare earth metals, which are very important to modern industry, are generally extracted from numerous rare earth minerals. In practice, however, the actual extraction of rare earth is mainly from bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime. The Mountain Pass mine is one of the largest rare earth mine in the world, at which the main rare earth mineral is bastnaesite. In the past years, froth flotation has been applied to the beneficiation of Mountain Pass ore. In practice, the rare earth ore is usually crushed, milled and further separated from calcite, barite and other gangue minerals by froth flotation, in which the rare earth oxide-bearing minerals stick to aerated bubbles in the pulp and float to the surface, leaving the gangue at the bottom of the flotation cell and disposed of as tailings.(Bulatovic, 2010) In spite of the fact that froth flotation has been applied to treat the bastnaesite ore at the Mountain Pass mine, the rare earth oxide (REO) recovery is still low,(Anderson, 2015) especially compared to the one obtained with sulfide flotation. For example, the typical recovery obtained at the Mountain Pass mine was only about 70%. This may be due to the low selectivity of the collector (oleic acid). In addition, to enhance the flotation selectivity, the pulp in the mine circuit has to be heated up to 70 to 90°C and it involves a lot of energy consumption. Last but not the least, a lot of depressants have to be added to improve the selectivity of flotation process. Therefore, it is critical to re-examine the existing flotation process at the Mountain Pass mine and seek any chance of improvement. (Anderson, 2015)

The Toulon tunnel project is a key component of the Highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960?s. The tunnel project is made of 2 separate tunnels: South and North tunnel. The North tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction (for example, on March 15th, 1996, a collapse of the tunnel in the ?Marchand Area? generated a sink hole in the city Center, causing 20 months delay). The South tunnel alignment runs parallel to the North tunnel at the same depth below Toulon historical downtown (20 to 40m depth with some areas with less than 10m of cover). The Risk management program was studied to be a State of the Art program in urban tunneling construction. The Hydro Geological Context The whole project area is covered with backfills and colluviums of 1 to 4m thick. The Schist, marls and sandstones, randomly distributed along the alignment below the first layer have different characteristics. While the Schist are pretty compact, the marls are fractured. The other layers have very different characteristics, and many faults are located along the alignment, especially in the limestones. The Breccia are heavily decompressed and deformable, as well as the other soils located in the Marchand Area. This 80m long area is where the settlements need to be controlled with an extensive monitoring program. The complete Geological profile is presented in Figure 1. [ ]

Increased technical and legislative analysis by all parties of interest could result in more efficientand better directed regulatory legislation in the mining industry. Efforts to forestall or frustrate legislation through massive lobbying and public relations efforts are seldom effective over time and often lead to more stringent and far reaching legislation than necessary. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is perhaps an outstanding example of such insufficiences; a future example may well be regulatory surface mine legislation. Although a lack of extensive hard data seldom enables rapid or sophisticated analysis early in the legislative process, even preliminary analysis may be sufficient. Simple statistical analyses of available data, assessment of the legislative rationale, and subjective appraisal of other non-quantifiable constraints to improved mine safety. An average of 115 underground fatalities at an exposure frequency rate of 0.67 can be reasonably expected in the immediate future, under existing levels of technology, degree of regulation, and economic conditions. If gross unrefined estimates of 6 preparation plant, 5 surface, and 30 strip mining fatalities are assumed, the total fatality industry level could be expected to approximate 156 Serious professional, economic, and technical constraints within the the industry probably preclude any major decrease of these accident levels within the near future

The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 by an act of Congress and subsequently directed to: "...conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste ..." Under this broad charter, the Bureau's responsibilities have changed and grown from an almost exclusive concern with coal and coal mine safety to the present emphasis on a full spectrum of mineral producing and consuming problems. In the past 30 years, the domestic consumption of coal, oil, gas, metals, and industrial minerals has more than quadrupled, in parallel with the rapid and enormous growth in industrial production. Of the scores of metals and nonmetals essential to the Nation's progress and security, many are scarce and difficult to wrest from domestic sources. Reserves of some ores are dwindling. Available ore resources are becoming leaner and more difficult to treat. In recognition of this many faceted problem, the Bureau has engaged in a continuing quest for new and improved technology to enable economic exploitation of marginal minerals and fuels, to find substitutes for minerals in short supply, and to create better materials to meet the expanding and diverse requirements of the growing economy. The current central concern of the Bureau is focused on meeting projected fuel, metal, and mineral demands at the lowest real cost by recovery from available resources by new and improved technology that minimizes waste, hazards, and social and environmental problems.

The Devil?s Slide portion of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara is often closed due to the instability of the adjacent slopes. Following many years of public input and careful evaluation of alternatives, Devil?s Slide will be by-passed via two inland tunnels, providing a safe, dependable highway between Pacifica and Montara. For the twin tunnels, each 9m diameter tube will accommodate only one traffic lane. Each tunnel tube will accommodate a 3.6 meter roadway, 0.6 meter and 2.4 meter inside and outside shoulders respectively, and 1.2 meter walkways on each side. Cross passages will connect the bores at about 120 meter intervals and jet fans will provide tunnel ventilation. The twin tunnels are approximately 1,250 meter long and 9 meter wide. Excavation will progress from south to north using tunneling techniques that rely on inherent rock strength for support known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Both tunnels will be excavated at the same time, one tunnel face approximately 40 meters ahead of the other. Staggering the tunnels reduces the likelihood of damage from blasting in alternate tunnels. The work schedule is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week resulting in a 24-month timetable to break through to the north portal.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

Broken rock mass and unreasonable stope structure parameters can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving; this is the main problem faced by caving mining in recent years. This paper proposes a stope structure parameter optimization method suitable for steeply inclined medium-thick broken ore bodies and evaluates the reliability and effectiveness through case studies. To solve the problem of large ore loss and dilution in the high-end wall sublevel caving method of Xilinhot fluorite mine, it is necessary to select proper stope structure parameters. Based on the theory of random media, an end-wall ore drawing experiment was carried out, and the bulk flow parameters needed to optimization of stope structure parameters were determined. In the experiment, it was found the draw-out body of high-end wall ore drawing showed a fine top and a thick bottom; the granular media had good fluidity. The reasonable caving step is determined to be 1.2 m instead of the 1.6 m originally used. Through the optimization experiment of the mining route position along the vein, the study found that the best route position is different with the ore body inclination. When the inclination angle of the ore body was 90°, the reasonable route was located in the center of the ore body. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 85° and 90°, the route moved from the center of the ore body to the footwall at a rate of 22.5%. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 80° and 85°, the route moved to the footwall at a rate of 54.8%. When the inclination angle of the ore body is not greater than 80°, the route should be arranged on the boundary of the footwall. Field application results showed the dilution rate reduced by 7.66% and the recovery rate increased by 7.31%. Field test results verify the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure, which corroborates the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure.

"The Chilean minerals industry faces a shortage of 27.000 new skilled professional by 2023. Enhancing the integration of women into the workforce is a possible solution. This study analyzes the state of women in the mining workforce over the past decade. Several key indicators are presented: percent in the workforce, salaries, career profiles, presence at management level, and participation in academia are studied. The study also analyzes the strategies used by government, industry, and universities to recruit and retain women for the minerals industry. The main results show that women represent 7.4% of the mining workforce in Chile and less than 1% of senior positions with a salary gap of approximately 30%. Systematically, women prefer professional programs in geology, chemistry, and environmental areas. The Chilean statistics are compared to data from the United States mining industry. INTRODUCTION The Chilean mining industry faces a significant shortage of professionals for the next decade which compromises competitiveness and productivity. The demand for human capital in mining depends on several factors. First, the age structure of workforce, which determines future retirement needs. Second, minerals market considerations, determining the amount and size of mining projects entering production in the coming years. Third, the evolution, positive or negative, of productivity, mainly driven by technology and innovation, and negatively affected by the declining ore grades. Finally, negative trends in lead times to production of mining projects, due to social opposition, changing regulations and other project contingencies, negatively affecting the demand for human capital. Regarding the supply of human capital, the fast increase in the technology level of the minerals industry and hence, the increase of technical qualification requirements of the human capital generates a rise in the time required for trade and university education of mining professionals, which may cause imbalances in the labor market. According to (Consejo Minero, 2014) human capital gap in Chile by 2023 will be around 27.000 workers for extractive, processing and maintenance jobs, which represents 14% of the current workforce (Figure 1)."

The Riley Pass strip mine is an abandoned uranium-bearing lignite deposit in Harding County, South Dakota, covering about 150 acres of highwalls, pit floor and mine spoils exhibiting elevated levels of radioactivity. Six reclamation design alternatives were developed, ranging from doing nothing to reclaiming to approximate original con-tour. The alternatives were evaluated for expense, site stabilization, and mitigation of public safety hazards. A comparative economic evaluation on three of the alternatives was completed for the Forest Service in selecting an alternative and substantiating federal funding requests. This evaluation included economic impacts associated with physical and radiologic health hazards, affects on recreational users, socioeconomic impacts and environmental improvement.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.

Very few facilities containing hydraulically deposited tailings have been completely reclaimed and capped at this time. Design of a closure cap for a tailings impoundment has relied heavily on consolidation theory in order to achieve a cap that maintains sur­face drainage. Obtaining data for the consolidation evaluation can be difficult and costly. The author reviews the performance of two tailings impoundment closure caps that have been suc­cessfully installed and presents the experience gained from these projects with an emphasis on the ability to optimize cap design through post-operational monitoring prior to initiating cap con­struction. Using the optimization approach, a significant earth­work quantities reduction may be realized for the ultimate cap.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Expressway Central Circular Route with a total length of approximately 47 km is located outside the Inner Circular Route of Tokyo (at a radius of approximately 8 km from the city center). Sections with a length of approximately26 km, slightly less than 60% of the total length, on the east and north sides are in ser-vice. Completing the Central Circular Route (Figure 1) is expected to enable through traffic concentrated at the city center to get around, and to form a well balanced trans-port network, which will alleviate traffic congestion considerably. The Central Circular Shinjuku Route, a section with a length of approximately 11 km on the west side, is now being constructed at a fast pace. The route is being built mainly by the shield tunneling method to carry out work smoothly under a trunk highway carrying heavy traffic and to reduce adverse effects of tunneling work on residents in the neighborhood. Shield tunnels have recently been becoming longer and deeper, and no secondary linings have been used in an increasing number of cases because of the over-crowding of cities or the reduction of budgets for public works. Economical, durable and high-quality segments have been required for linings of shield tunnels. Segments are made of concrete, steel, cast iron or combination thereof. Concrete segments are generally used in shield tunnels of medium to large diameter. Concrete segments are highly durable and resistant to compression, so they are highly resistant to earth pres-sure, water pressure and jack thrust. They are, however, heavy and have low tensile strength, so they are brittle and their corners are likely to spall. Concrete segments should therefore be handled carefully.[1] The authors have developed a steel fiber reinforced highly flowable concrete segment (referred as SFRC segment) that overcomes the weaknesses of concrete segments[2] to construct economical, durable and high-quality linings. SFRC segments have been applied to outbound sections SJ51 through SJ53 of the Central Circular Shinjuku Route. Unlike conventional concrete segments (referred as conventional RC segments), SFRC segments are made of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting highly flowable concrete. SFRC segments require less reinforcing bars than conventional RC segments because steel fibers are expected to work as reinforcements. This work describes a leaching process for the conversion of high-magnesium peridotite rock, which is a chromite ore overburden, into two valuable products: magnesium salts and micro silica. Under normal leaching conditions, residue remaining after leaching is of a gelatinous nature and thus hinders the filtration process. To address this issue, oxidative leaching with the addition of H2O2 was employed, and it significantly improved the filtration kinetics. Four different approaches for H2O2 addition were tried, and they all proved effective in controlling gelation. The optimum oxidative leaching condition was 70 °C, 2 h time, 2 M H2SO4, 0.5MH2O2 and 400 RPM; under these conditions, 92% magnesium leaching efficiency was achieved. After leaching, the leach liquor obtained was purified and dried into Mg(OH)2 and MgSO4 salts. The leach residue contained mainly silica particles, with size in the 10–30 μm range. This material thus represents an attractive candidate for the production of highperformance concrete for the construction industry. The oxidative leaching process described here enabled the complete conversion of peridotite into valuable products, magnesium salts and micro silica.

Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.
