"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. Disruption in critical minerals supply chains has resulted in the evaluation of various types of mineral deposits for critical minerals potential. Much of the study on critical minerals focuses on occurrence and characterization, but little research has addressed what concentrations of critical minerals in a mineral deposit are required to make an exploration target into an operating mine. Understanding the cut-off grades of ore deposits being actively mined is one criterion to determine if concentrations in an exploration target are high enough. Cut-off grade is defined as the minimum amount of mineral contained in a ton of ore that is sent to the processing plant. Among many factors, cut-off grade depends upon the size and type of the deposit and mining operation, the processing technique, and market prices. This research does not aim to define cut-offs for determining if a mineral deposit is economic. Rather, it defines estimates of concentrations of critical minerals that could be considered good enough for further exploration. For example, ~2% total rare earth oxide (TREO) is the cut-off grade for Mt. Pass carbonatite, but 500 ppm TREO could be an exploration target for coals.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption and high reactivity of fatty acid collectors towards apatite over silica surfaces under slightly acidic conditions of pH 5-6.5. The process was successful in upgrading various phosphate samples from Florida and North Carolina containing 7.7-15.3% P205 and 62.3- 77.2% Insol to concentrates assaying 28.1-33.1 % P205 and 4.1-9.9% Insol with high P2O5 recovery of 81.8-92.2%. Depending on the type of silica impurities present one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to improve the grade of the rougher phosphate concentrate.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

Repairing and replacing equipment damaged by corrosion and abrasion is a major cost throughout industry, especially in the coal mining industry. Careful study of corrosion and abrasion, and their causes and effects, often leads to the selection of alternative materials which can provide economies. What, actually, are corrosion and abrasion and how do they contribute to the cost of operating a coal-preparation plant? Furthermore, what can be done to alleviate corrosion and abrasion problems and thereby reduce operating costs? These questions will be answered in the following discussion, which will describe the destructive action of corrosion and abrasion and give several methods for controlling corrosion and abrasion losses, These methods include the substitution of stainless steel for carbon steel, the use of corrosion inhibitors, and the use of design to eliminate corrosion and abrasion. Examples will be given illustrating the benefits that have resulted in plant tests when these methods of controlling corrosion and abrasion were used.

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. Almost all persons connected with mining industry have had an exasperating experience like the following: 'On a cold and frosty morning in mid-January, you find yourself quite happy with the world. Production is up and the mine has been running smoothly. All at once the radio cracks up your tranquility -- 'so and so' piece of equip¬ment has broken its 'whatzit'. Now the iron is in the fire, and things have to be fixed quick.!' This can be a major failure which will bring the whole operation to a grinding halt or just one of the numerous maintenance headaches on an auxiliary piece of equipment. After one has experienced a major or minor catastrophe, he has to wonder whether some other methods with respect to design and maintenance would help prevent these unexpected calamities. The objective of this paper is to gain an insight into the charac¬teristics of steel at cold temperatures so that better decisions can be made with respect to maintenance and repair of mining equipment. Most machinery and their structures are exposed to cold temperatures. Even in locations as far south as Alabama and Arizona, brief periods of cold in winter months can adversely affect the ability of mach¬ines to do their work. Coal plays an important role in the energy needs of the World. Given its wide abundance and low cost, coal use is bound to increase with the growing energy demand. Despite its importance, there are growing concerns over coal?s environmental burdens, especially its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. To ensure sustainable extraction and use of coal, opportunities for minimizing potential impacts from coal have to be identified and exploited. Whilst extensive work has been done on life cycle assessment of coal use, especially in electricity generation which uses the bulk of coal produced, there has been limited work focusing specifically on coal mining. This study aims to estimate the cradle-to-gate life cycle climate change impacts of coal from a surface coal mine in the United States. The study employs general principles of ISO standards for LCA.

In tunnel condition assessment, the trend is towards comprehensive 3D measurement combined with high quality image texture to document and quantify damages to the tunnel surface and to create a cohesive data base of the structural conditions throughout its lifespan. The faster such measurements can be made on site, the less it impacts traffic conditions of the highly sophisticated subway systems. The Dibit high-speed 3D scanning system which is based on Photogrammetry and LiDAR technology enables data acquisition in tunnels at a speed of up to 60 mph. Given the high rate of speed the system can operate, tunnel shutdowns can be drastically reduced, and tunnel safety increased. The photorealistic texturing of the 3D-model allows the identification and analysis of smallest material damage (e.g., cracks ≥0.3 mm wide). The publication illustrates technical details and 3D results of the innovative system from measurements that were performed in the subway tunnels of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System in San Francisco, CA (total length 66.23 km).

In the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) phase of its National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) pro¬gram, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) samples about 1400 sites for stream sediments in each two-degree quadrangle of the National Topographic Nap Series (NTMS) and about 1200 sites for ground or stream water. Through a geological/statistical analysis, we find that NURE data are useful for assessing the uranium resources of the NTMS quadrangles. Our computer-implemented System for Uranium Resource Evaluation (SURE) calculates a score for each NTMS quadrangle based on the HSSR, geologic, and radiometric data; we score the four Colorado quadrangles--Pueblo, Montrose, Durango, and Trinidad--that comprise the study area. We interpret the scores in terms of geology and the known occurrences, which include the Hanson ore deposit with reserves of 30,000,000 lbs. U308 and the Pitch mine with reserves of 1,740,000 lbs. SURE depends in part on distinguishing mineralized or metalliferous granitoids from barren ones through "geochemical signatures."

Ensuring adequate ventilation is a critical aspect of safety in underground mining operations. In small-scale mines in particular, key ventilation parameters such as temperature, humidity, and air velocity are often measured manually and only at infrequent intervals, typically using analog instruments. As a result, real-time monitoring of environmental changes, timely detection of hazardous situations, and demand-driven ventilation control are not feasible. This presentation discusses the selection and evaluation of modern digital ventilation measurement devices, including handheld instruments with digital data logging capabilities and continuously operating sensors with potential for real-time data transmission. The investigations focus on the challenges posed by underground environments with extremely high humidity levels, which can adversely affect sensor performance and electronic components. The results are based on testing conducted at the Research and Teaching Mine of TU Bergakademie Freiberg—an underground ore mine characterized by humidity levels exceeding 95%. Findings include assessments of measurement accuracy, reliability, and practical applicability under these demanding conditions.

In recent years there has been increasing concern in the mining industry over the availability and high cost of diesel fuel to support mining operations. Unit Rig & Equipment Co. has been deeply involved with the development and testing of the newest designs for trolley assist. Beginning in dune 1980, Unit Rig modified and commissioned six 156 metric ton (170 short ton) trolley assist haulage trucks at two mine locations in South Africa. Operating haulage trucks with General Electric GTA 15E/776 drive systems were chosen for the tests since this size of truck represented the majority of the population of large size haulage trucks and the greatest technical development problems. Test operations have proven the feasibility of equipment designs in actual operation and preliminary economic data has convinced the operators to proceed with planning to modify their entire mining operation to use trolley assist. The initial capital investment incurred for trolley assist can be recovered in a short period of time. Following this quick capital recovery, mines will continue to realize lower operating costs through increased productivity and lower diesel consumption.

Nowadays, small diameter tunnels are increasingly considered in pipeline projects as an alternative for sensitive crossings or when soil conditions limit the use of conventional pipeline installation methods like HDD. Safety concerns play a key role, especially for inner-city installations. Pipe jacked microtunnels and small segment lining tunnels can serve as casing tunnels if access is required during construction for the change of cutting tools in challenging ground conditions or for maintenance of the pipeline in operation. Small diameter tunneling solutions offer a high degree of flexibility for alignment design in terms of geology, length and radius.

"The majority of tunnels for civil engineering applications are now being constructed using some form of mechanical excavation. Beginning in the 1960s with rock tunnel boring machines (TBM), the tunneling industry has introduced both earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry pressure balance (SPB) soil machines; mixed soil and rock machines and a variety of different mechanical devices for the construction of small diameter tunnels. Over time, these machines have become more powerful and more adaptable to a wider variety of ground conditions; so much so that tunnels are now being constructed in ground conditions and in the vicinity of third-party impacts that would have been considered beyond the state of the art just 10 years ago. Figure 1 is an example of a mixed ground crossover TBM used successfully at Mexico City’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II.All of the above is highly advantageous for the tunneling industry, but it has also placed a much higher level of risk on the performance characteristics of the tunneling machines, on the contractors operating those TBMs and on the manufacturers of those machines. Most of the risks for a tunneling project are associated with creating the space inside of which the finished facility will be constructed. In order to create that space, the tunnel contractor must make many decisions about the best way to excavate the ground, the best way to control the ground at the face of excavation and the preferred method for supporting the ground around the tunnel in a manner that is safe for the workers and stable with respect to all of the overlying and adjacent existing structures. If it is proposed to use some form of TBM in order to build the tunnel, then the TBM becomes central to all three of these activities and becomes an integral part of managing the risks associated with these activities."

"INTRODUCTION Longwall coal mining leaves large areas where the coal has been made removed and the roof rock strata collapse, forming a zone of broken rock rubble called the gob. Figure 1 shows a typical longwall gob area along with the gate roads. The ventilation pattern for progressively sealed longwall panels follows a simple “U” pattern where fresh air is coursed inby to the headgate, flows along the face and exhausts through the outby tailgate as shown in figure 1(a). An important variation of this pattern is the back return (BR) arrangement where the exhaust air from the face is drawn inby and around the nearest open cross cut before it turns in the outby direction towards the exhaust fan. Figure 1(b) illustrates the use of back return. This arrangement moves the point of low pressure from the tailgate corner up to 60 m inby and thus maintains fresh air in the tailgate region that could otherwise be contaminated with gob air.The gob area may contain remnants of unmined coal or parts of overlying coal beds that continue to release methane, eventually filling the gob area with methane in concentrations far above the explosive range of about 4.5 to 15%. Many gob areas must be equipped with gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) to extract methane, and GVBs often exhaust methane at concentrations from 50% to 90% (Saki, 2016). Due to oxidation processes occurring in the gob, the oxygen content is reduced to a low level, with nitrogen and CO2 making up the major remaining components of the gob atmosphere. FORMATION OF EXPLOSIVE GAS ZONES IN GOBS Since the longwall face area is ventilated with fresh air below 1% methane and the face and gob areas are not separated, an explosive fringe will form where the methane content lies within the explosive range and oxygen content remains above 12%. Figure 2 shows a typical development of such an EGZ. This figure is based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model developed by CSM researchers to analyze gas concentrations and flow patterns in longwall mining. Figure 2(a) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob with a U type ventilation scheme, where EGZ lies right behind the shields in the tailgate corner. Figure 2(b) shows the formation of EGZ in the gob combining U type ventilation scheme with BR, where EGZ is pushed away from the face deep into the gob. The CFD modeling parameters and boundary conditions have been verified with field data from two cooperating, active longwall mines (see Worrall 2012, Marts 2015, Gilmore 2015 and Saki 2016). Other mine geometries, methane inflow rates and gob permeability distributions can be modeled to establish representative gob atmospheric conditions. Two GVBs were operating in the model, extracting 0.165 m3/sec each. The methane in the working areas and returns was kept below 1%. Methane flowing into the model from a rider coal bed above the mined seam was at the rate of 0.55 m3/sec."

"Tunnel face instability is one of the most common issues in EPB tunneling. The evaluation of an ideal face support pressure is a critical element in the design and construction phases of EPB tunneling. In this study, measured tunnel face pressures in three EPB tunneling projects (University Link U230 and U220 projects and the Northgate Link Extension N125 Project) for Sound Transit in Seattle, WA are compared with the calculated analytical methods. This comparison shows that the analytical methods generally overestimate the required tunnel face support. The best practice for managing the face pressure in EPB tunneling operation is discussed based on the experience gained through these projects. Furthermore, the algorithm that is developed for identifying ground loss in these projects is addressed. INTRODUCTION Earth pressure balanced tunneling relies on using muck within the chamber to support the face. Muck is pressurized by controlling the advance rate of the tunnel boring machine and the speed of the screw conveyor. Target face pressure is typically calculated by using the geotechnical assumptions in the geotechnical baseline report. The concept behind EPB tunneling is that the application of sufficient face support pressure will prevent tunnel face instability and the resultant over excavation. Tunnel face instabilities caused by a lack of sufficient face support can lead to ground loss and surface settlement (Anagnostou & Kovári 1996, Kirsch 2010). A certain support pressure must be achieved to counteract water and earth pressure with an adequate factor of safety. While the water pressure can be predicted accurately, the determination of the resultant earth pressure on the face is less precise. This becomes manifested in the relatively high partial safety factors on the earth pressure."

"The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. This is a new era for the minerals industry. Never before has there been more need for effective communication. So said Robert Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer of Hanna Mining Co. He was speaking to the American Mining Congress's Communication Workshop. The question is whether there is enough industry concern to meet the challenge. Anderson observed that increased workshop attendance, in continuing tough times, reflects the industry's concern for communication. But, why were students, faculty, engineers, supervisors, and managers not at the conference? Communication applies to every manager, Anderson said. But he was the only operating manager present. And only one company sent operating supervisors. The remaining conference participants were public relations personnel, generally with nonmining backgrounds. And the program dealt mostly with public relations issues. Role of Communication in the Minerals Industry. It is well known that the minerals industry faces economic, political, and social problems. Economic shifts and foreign competition have created an international minerals industry and an international marketplace. This, in turn, calls for worldwide communication. Other factors effecting communication are: • Governmental protectionism as well as regulatory reforms call for increased interaction with governing officials. • Changing social values have created environmental issues and anti-industry attitudes. This intensifies the need for improved public relations. • Traditional work values are shifting towards self-actualization and humanistic movements. The work force is better educated and more informed. Employees demand more satisfaction, equality, and job autonomy. • The mining industry's task of managing its human resources is complicated by layoffs, job uncertainties, and bleak outlooks concerning employee morale and motivation. Technology and Information for a New Era As noted, this is a new communications era, one propelled by technology and information. Technology has led to reduced demand for raw materials by developing substitutes. Copper demand, for example, will never fully recover. Copper cables are replaced by fiberoptics; copper transmission lines, with aluminum. Technology has shifted the US from traditional to high tech and service industries. The speed, frequency, and scope of information transmission have greatly increased. But the most significant characteristic of this information is not the pace of advancing technology. It is the dramatic increase in the importance and frequency of our personal transactions. Knowledge has replaced raw materials and capital as the strategic resource. Information has replaced energy as the transforming resource. And the game against nature has become an interpersonal game (D. Bell, Post-industrial society, Physics Today, '76). In Megatrends, John Naisbitt says that information will soon double every 20 months. So, professionals will become "information workers." And communication will be the life channel of the information age. Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again. Hanna Anderson said we are, indeed, facing a new day. It will never again be "business as usual." We must move into the information age with the rest of society. We cannot trust that the world will continue to rely on our products. Nor can we place the responsibility and control for problems and solutions outside the minerals industry. Improved communication is not a panacea. But, Anderson said, it is critical to the minerals industry. What is Communication? The word communication is overused. It is applied to every aspect of our lives. Satirist Tom Lehrer got sick of hearing about the need to communicate. He said, "It seems to me that if someone is having all that trouble communicating, the very least he can do is shut up!" Obviously, we cannot follow that advice (though we might wish that some others would do so). Communication is always going on. It is inevitable. Yet we have many misconceptions about com-

Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have now been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting took over 5 years to obtain all authorizations for this operation. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.
