Minter's excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney's discussion broadens Minter's 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney's discussion and Minter's reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in a broad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin's Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation.

The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily- mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modelling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modelling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities, but requires thorough utilization of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller's logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions often proves more applicable to coal character delineation than does mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modelling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence-levels in reserve estimations.

The sampling method must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling scooptrams at the loading pockets. These were abandoned in favor of sampling production blast holes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

An analysis of an iron-ore processing plant showed that its performance was affected by seasonal temperature variations, resulting in reduced grinding efficiency during the winter months. Laboratory and pilot plant studies were conducted to determine the cause of the observed loss of efficiency at lower temperatures. Two types of experiments were performed: drop tests and wet grinding tests. Drop testing was performed to determine the effect of brittleness and frozen pore water on the breakage characteristics of the ore. The wet grinding tests were divided into laboratory tumble tests and pilot-plant tests. The combined results of drop testing and wet grinding were used to make predictions on the performance of plant-scale autogenous grinding. From the drop tests, it was determined that dry iron ore, basalt and sandstone did not change in brittleness over the temperature range studied (-25º to 25ºC). However, when the rocks were water-saturated, the highly porous sandstone became considerably more fracture-resistant upon freezing, due to "grouting" of the pores and preexisting cracks by ice. This effect was not seen for either the iron ore or the basalt, because they were considerably less porous than the sandstone. Tumble tests on both laboratory and pilot scales showed that both the addition of fines to the test charge and a reduction in temperature caused a decrease in the amount of new fines produced. This reduced fines production was the result of increased slurry viscosity when either the fines content increased or the temperature decreased.

Recently the operating philosophy at concentrators processing platinum bearing ores has started to move from a recovery dominated system to one in which the production of high grade concentrates at the expense of some recovery would provide greater benefits in the further upgrading of the platinum group minerals (PGM). The low grades usually obtained are associated with the presence of naturally floatable talcaceous gangue minerals in all PGM ores. Polysaccharide depressants such as guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are used to improve the grades of the concentrates. Recent testwork has shown that the use of high depressant concentrations can prevent any naturally floatable gangue from reporting to the concentrate. The only gangue present in the concentrates would be due to its entrainment in the froth. Under these conditions much higher grades can be achieved. The sulphide minerals themselves, however, become susceptible to depression at high depressant concentrations. This work examines how the recovery of sulphide minerals in two Merensky ores was affected by the type and concentration of the collector in the presence of high depressant concentration (500 g/t) and that the response of the sulphide minerals was also dependent on the type of depressant used (guar or CMC).

In mid 1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of ASARCO and TAC, initiated a six phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration tar¬gets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable down dip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: Mississippian Humbug Formation replacement mineralization below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City Anticline; Humbug replacement mineralization in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade Humbug replacement mineralization in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein; Permian Park City Formation replacement mineralization in the West End Shaft Area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back Vein in the Judge Mine. Chilean Nationalization in 1971 resulted in a 30% budget cutback. The Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure; five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug, and Doughnut Formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

Detailed stratigraphic studies of the overburden at North Carolina Phosphate Corporation new South Creek Mine have delineated several aquifers and acquicludes within the 30-meter-thick overburden section of late Pleistocene sands and clayey sands. A major aquifer occurs in the 10-meter-thick sequence of shelly sands of the early Pleistocene Croatan Formation. The water-charged Croatan sands thicken into a paleodrainage surface on top of the Pliocene Yorktown Formation, a major aquiclude. A three-phase dewatering program is projected: 1) improve surface drainage around mine perimeter to reduce both flowage into the pit and rainfall recharge; 2) use a wellpoint system to dewater the upper 8 meters; and 3) use recharge wells along the axis of the paleo- drainage to dewater the overburden below 8 meters.

Williams Mine was considering spending a large amount of capital to install a pumping system underground to rid the mine of slimes; with the introduction of Delvo Stabilizer this challenge would be met. This paper will address the process to introducing the Delvo Technology into the Cemented Roddill Program. Some areas that were worked on included: testing of the mix design, bet dosage rate for an economical solution, temperatures at different levels of the mine, the amount of time needed once the grout was put to sleep, preventing plugs in the delivery system A controlled dosage that gave the Operator a 12 hour window of flowable material was developed and an added feature to the introduction of Delvo was also noted; an increase in MPa strength over the design. Collectively with the help of operators at the batch plant and the underground miners involved with the program all concerns where addressed and all goals met. A cost effective program was implemented thus increasing productivity, preventing costly plugs, and improved the actual maintenance on the entire delivery system, which included the batch tanks, aggitator tanks, all pumps required in the system and of course reducing buildup of slimes at the cones.

In recent years, much work has been done to explain the nature of the gold-carbon adsorption mechanism. The benefits of a sound theoretical basis has the obvious application to gold adsorption and elution industrial processes. Unfortunately, the lack of a clear agreement on the mechanism has provided no clear direction towards process innovation and optimization. Jones' (1989) work has gone a long way towards clarifying the specie of gold adsorbed (and thus the chemistry required to remove it). Since the development of hot caustic and cyanide elution, the kinetics have been accelerated by the application of pressure to increase elution temperatures beyond the boiling point at atmospheric pressure. However, the traditional reagent content of 15 g/L NaOH and 5-10g/L NaCN has remained largely unchanged. This is in spite of work that has shown that the presence of cyanide is not required for the elution process to take place (Adams, 1986; Adams; 1989; Jones, 1989). Adams (1989) has also compared NaOH elution rates with and without cyanide. He found improvement with the use of cyanide and a synergistic effect with the use of both. Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

The Bousquet #2 deposit, located within the Blake River Group in the Abitibi Greenstone belt, midway between the towns of Val d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda, exhibits all of the distinguishing characteristics of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. As such, the deposit can be compared with other gold-rich VMS deposits such as the world-class Home deposit in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada and the Mount Morgan deposit near Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

Discussion by P. Malozemoff I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years. In underground mines, it is not economic to develop reserves beyond a certain depth, so the life of initially established reserves must be limited. In these cases, it is especially important to have a good geological understanding of the orebody and its continuity. To accommodate these concepts and present proof of economic soundness for a mining enterprise, a mathematical analysis should yield a life long enough to allow exploration and the development of additional reserves that would ensure a longer mine life and a more profitable result.

The uranium industry has made a dramatic turnaround in the past three years that even the most optimistic economist was not willing to predict during the uranium downswing of the 1990s. Uranium reached a 30-year low in February 2001 of $6.50/lb. By the end of February 2006 it had soared to $38.50/pound. This nearly 600% increase in the uranium spot price within 4 years dwarfed the increase in gold price that has barely mustered a 100% increase. The initial slow rise from $6.50 in February 2001 to $10.75 in April 2003 (fig. 1) was primarily driven by the decrease in the value of the dollar. Since then several factors have contributed to the soaring price: (1) The awakening of many to the simple fact that uranium supply has not met demand for several years and that the world’s stockpiles are being drawn down, (2) How sharply this fragile supply can be impacted by disasters at the world’s major uranium production facilities, such as a) the flooding of the McArthur River Mine in the spring of 2003, b) fires at Olympic Dam, c) the potential that Rossing, with an annual capacity of 4000 tonnes uranium might close by 2007, (3) the withdrawal of Tenex from the HEU (highly enriched uranium) feed agreement, and (4) the announcement by the Chinese of their intent to build 30 new nuclear reactors.

As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation, which often requires that the primary ventilation system is upgraded with additional shafts and surface fans. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room and pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.

The paper applies the principles of the incompressible viscous fluid-flow to studying the movement of particles on shaking table and examines the separating process of tabling according to Bagnold's shearing theory. It is shown that, in addition to the periodic movement, the particles possess the uniform movement on the asymmetrical reciprocating table; the dilation of the particle layers on the table is periodically obtained; on the backward stroke, the particles in the bed are kept loose because the shearing dispersive pressure is of maximum: the differences between the light and heavy particles become greater when the length and frequency of the stroke are greater and the deck motion is more asymmetrical.

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota's economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota's iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry's competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota's taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota's Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24. Nitric acid has long been known as an effective oxidant. Nitric acid leaching is characterised by highly favourable kinetics. Process development was impeded due to the corrosive nature of the process, limited knowledge of acid recycle and complex reactions which are still not fully understood. In 1981, Arseno Processing Ltd (APL), began development of the so-called Arseno process. The technology targeted nitric acid oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates whose refractoriness was due to the presence of sulphide minerals. APL lodged patents in United States, Australia, Canada and several other countries covering the basic chemistry, the overall process, and reactor design. The name Arseno led to the misunderstanding that the process was only applicable to arsenic-bearing material. The name was therefore changed to the Redox process in 1988. Having played an important role in the development of Redox from 1986, SASOX recognised the great potential of the process and purchased the process in 1990. SASOX owns all the patents and other Redox proprietary know-how, licensing agreements in force, and is committed to the ongoing development and commercialisation of the Redox technology. Minproc has been granted specific marketing and engineering rights to the Redox pro_cess.

Placer mining in Alaska had a desultory inception at Sumdum in 1869 and, during the years 1880 to 1896, received thin nourishment from the readily exhausted gold placers at Juneau and the longer- lived deposits in the Circle, Fortymile, and Rampart Districts. Finally, in 1897, the great Klondike discovery in Canada's Yukon Territory brought thousands of gold seekers to the Far North. These men, in successive, far-reaching gold rushes, found the large, rich gold deposits at Nome, Fairbanks, and Iditarod, as well as many smaller placers. The hectic rushes during the years from 1898 to 19 10 were comprised of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of "stampeders," as they were called. Since very many Alaskan creeks, from the crest of the Brooks Range in the north to the Pacific Ocean in the south, carry at least a few flakes of gold, there was ample seed to start a new stampede. Of the 100s of reported "strikes," nearly 50 became more or less important placer mining districts; by 1910 they had produced about 184.2 fine Mg (6.5 million fine oz) of gold; the all- time peak production year was 1906. A few of the miners and prospectors prospered, but the total value of all gold produced failed, by a wide margin, to cover the aggregate costs incurred by them in the undeveloped Territory of Alaska. On the other hand, the traders with their readily salable supplies of food, tools, and hardware and the freighters with their teams of dogs or horses and boats of all kinds profited throughout the era of stampede.

An important issue in the use of high pressure grinding rolls when grinding ores is wear of the rolls. Due to the abrasive nature of the ores, significant wear rates have typically occurred. Attempts to address the wear problem require a better understanding of the wear mechanisms. A probable wear mechanism is the abrasion of the rolls surface due to extrusion of the compacted material as it leaves the rolls. This paper presents the results of a study on a number of ores to examine the extent of extrusion that occurs. The study involved laboratory, pilot and full-scale high pressure grinding rolls. The effect of variations in parameters such as grinding pressure, rolls speed, initial gap settings, feed topsize and moisture was investigated. The results indicate that extrusion increases with increasing grinding pressure and rolls diameter, while the use of studded or profiled rolls significantly reduces the extrusion effect compared to smooth rolls. It was also found that rolls speed and feed moisture can have significant effect on extrusion, depending on the material.
