Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler's Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California's insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. A new method for determination of residual flotation oils on beneficiated kaolin clays has been developed. The method, which yields qualitative information, is based on fluorescence measurements employing a spatially resolved, polychromatic illumination source for excitation, and a two-dimensional detection scheme using a silicon-intensified, video imaging device. The method was used to identify residual oils on a beneficiated, Washington County, Georgia, crude clay. The results were compared to a similar qualitative analysis performed via capillary column gas chromatography using an FID detector. The video fluorometry was the preferred method of, analysis.

INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Reclamation is conducting a research program to investigate, develop, and test polymer-impregnated concrete tunnel support and lining systems for gravity flow, circular cross-section water conveyance tunnels. This system consists of segmented precast rings, backfilled with concrete. Polymer-impregnated concrete is conventional precast concrete which has been impregnated with a liquid monomer. The liquid monomer is subsequently converted to a polymer by thermal-catalytic or radiation methods. The polymer is a solid plastic which fills voids and microfractures within the concrete, resulting in greatly improved strength and modulus of elasticity and reduced permeability, which in turn increases the durability of the concrete. The immediate goals of the program are to develop techniques for the fabrication of precast concrete segments, test single segments to determine physical and mechanical properties, assemble the segments into a support and lining system, load and test the full-scale system, evaluate specific applications, and develop design criteria and construction procedures. INTRODUCTION In Canada, most of the rock being broken in underground metal mines is being carried out using traditional drilling and blasting methods. Despite advances being made in hard rock boring and other, more exotic techniques, it is Dynatec's belief that the traditional methods will continue to prevail for many years to come. It is also our belief that modest research efforts expended on the traditional methods will result in substantial financial benefits to the mining and rock tunnelling businesses. Dynatec has pursued productivity improvements through the use of long rounds in both shaft sinking and lateral development. The concept of longer rounds was developed by Dynatec on the Craig Shaft Sinking Project (RETC 1991). This paper reviews the Craig Shaft Long Round success. This technology was subsequently utilized to sink the two shafts at Aur Resources with great success. The paper deals with computerized analytical design of separational mineral processing flowsheets for flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation, etc. (without comminution). Initial data include fractional composition of the feed ore, separational characteristics of the unit operations, and optimality criterion. Computer-calculated results display optimal flowsheet configuration and optimal parameters of unit operations like tonnage, residence time, etc., which allows the choice of equipment. An example of apatite flotation flowsheet design is given. This analytical approach may be used for automatic process control purposes as well.

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train, the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71 percent — as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay Mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.The gearless principleThe principal idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts, especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material.In order to apply this principle of simplification, the components of a conventional drive system are examined. They consist of:• Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump).• Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear/pinion).• The electric motor.• Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage.• Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation.• The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)."

The paper will describe the $1.7 billion Milwaukee Program. Past contracting practices of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District are discussed. To minimize costs and claims, the MMSD has implemented some recommendations from Better Contracting for Underground Construction. Currently implemented are: full disclosure of subsurface data including interpretations, the deletion of disclaimers relating to subsurface information, use of the federal Differing Site Condition clause, payment for mobilization. Also considered was the recommendation concerning Wrap Up Insurance. The MMSD shares and allocates certain designated risks through the Contract. A claims handling methodology has been developed and used on this major construction program.

There are approximately 40 million tons per year of phosphate rock produced in the United States, half of it by flotation. The bulk of this is used to produce diammonium phosphate, an essential ingredient in the commercial fertilizer mixes used by the thriving U.S. agricultural community. This paper describes the mineral beneficiation practices of the phosphate industry, with special emphasis on flotation. There is also an attempt to include those items that might be considered emerging technologies for the industry as it faces the problems of a diminishing high-grade reserve and the necessity for implementing dolomite/francolite separations.

A gaseous chlorination process for the hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low-temperature chlorination -selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper, elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the process is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite concentrate micropellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established were used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

Alternative material handling methods are allowing material handling operations to be performed with increased cost savings. This allows for higher production levels with better returns. RAHCO International Inc.'s Continuous Mining Excavator (CME) has recently received a lot of attention due in part to its operating efficiency, flexibility, and associated low operating costs. The CME is designed to perform three primary functions. These include material excavation, sizing and loading operations. In many applications, a drilling and blasting process can be eliminated. The CME was developed originally in 1985 for open pit coal mining. See figure I. Since this time, it has been proven an effective system for excavating many other types of materials including friable and sticky materials. It has also been shown to suitably handle hard rock in certain site conditions.

Continuing advancements in manufactured diamond materials as used in rock cutting tools have created a new generation of high production tools for mining. This paper reviews the three major manufactured diamond product types available in the mining industry as supplied by General Electric Co., Specialty Materials Dept., and examines the ways these materials are used. As an integral part of this examination, the economic impact of manufactured diamond tools is evaluuted. Time and again, one will find that the premium price for these tools is economically justified when compared to traditional tools.

Published information on costs of radon-daughter control in uranium mines was analyzed to develop estimates of the cost per ton for any level of radiation exposure control. All data were converted to 1967 cost of living index to provide a common analysis base. Results of the analysis show that the cost per ton increases exponentially as the radiation level is lowered. A linear relationship with the cost of living index is assumed, and equations and graphs are provided to estimate control cost per ton for any exposure control level and cost of living index.

Under normal conditions, a significant amount of pyrite is recovered in the froth during flotation of high-sulfur coal. To reduce this pyrite recovery, it is first necessary to determine the primary recovery mechanism, because different measures are required for reducing entrainment, locked particle flotation or true hydrophobic flotation. In this paper, evidence is presented that suggests that hydrophobic flotation is not the major mechanism for recovery of liberated pyrite; instead, the bulk of the recovered pyrite results either from simple entrainment or from being physically locked with floatable coal particles.

This paper describes research by the Bureau of Mines on alternative materials-handling strategies for reducing the costs and incidence of back injuries in low-seam coal mines. Strategies recommended for redesigning materials-handling tasks include elimination of tasks, mechanization of tasks, and matching lifting tasks to the physical capabilities of underground miners. The report also discusses other methods that can be used by management to reduce the costs associated with back injuries. More detail can be found in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 9235 (Gallagher et al. 1990).

Brazil is a country with continental dimensions. It hosts many different varieties of terranes and geological environments in its 8.5 million km2 (3.28 million sq miles). This mineral endowment has been important for the country's economic and social development process since the early colonial period, leaving Brazil with a legacy of almost 400 years of mining tradition. Mining in Brazil started in the early 17th century with diamond and gold discoveries. The made the country the leading producer of both for more than a century. This phase faded by the late 18th century when the alluvial deposits were depleted. It finally yielded to competing countries where technology and capital were being applied more efficiently. This period of mining dormancy lasted from the late 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century when Brazilian mining picked up. There was growing pressure on mineral resources by the affluence of the industrial society. The fast-growing demand resulting from the two world wars had brought the Brazilian mineral wealth back to the scene. This second Brazilian mineral boom made the country a leading producer of iron and manganese ore, quartz crystals and other strategic minerals. This expansion in Brazil's mining industry provided the basis for the country's industrialization process. This was led by the Brazilian steel and petroleum industries. Unfortunately, the thrust provided by this modern industrial basis was not properly used as a lever for further industrial development. The upstream industrialization process was not supported by the proper development of the raw materials supplying basis. The resulting industrial model was heavily dependent on imports of raw materials. It did not support the economic growth and faced fierce industrial competitiveness and sophistication that emerged with the postwar economic boom.
