The mine plan for an underground longwall mine plan usually requires a longwall panel conveyor that begins operation at its maximum length and gradually shortens over the life of the panel. Current mine plans around the United States require initial panel conveyor lengths of up to 4500 m (15,000 ft) and capacities of up to 3.2 kt/h (3500 stph). Because these conveyors are constantly being moved from panel to panel, their components must be as compact and light as possible, and the design must be flexible enough to be modified as new terrain and conditions are met. In the past, when drive horsepowers or belt tensions were exceeded due to conveyor length, a new flight would be added, including additional belt storage units. In some cases, this led to as many as three flights installed in a single longwall panel. As the longwall retreated through each flight, mining was required to stop during removal of the drives and storage units. This sometimes meant several days of lost production. Intermediate drive technology was developed to eliminate this excessive downtime and still keep conveyor belts, motors, pulleys and other components as small as possible. With intermediate drives placed along the carrying side of the conveyor, belt and motor sizes are kept as small as possible, and only one storage unit is needed. Most importantly, as the longwall retreats through a booster drive station, it can generally be removed in a regular downtime slot and no additional production time is lost.

Chile leads the world in copper production with an annual capacity nearing 2 Mt (2.2 million st). Most of the country’s copper production, about 74%, is mined by open-pit mining methods. Open-pit mining also accounts for a major portion of Chile’s production of other commodities, including iron, gold, silver and coal (Table 1). Chile’s mining boom began 10 years ago and is expected to continue through the end of the decade. From 1980 to 1990, copper production in Chile increased 48.7%. During the same period, gold production increased 303%, silver production increased 119% and coal and iron ore production increased 163.7% and 6.6%, respectively (Table 2). It is estimated that copper production will be in the order of 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) by 1996, when new projects now under construction come onstream. Gold production could reach 35 t (1.1 million oz) and coal production could increase another 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy). Open-pit mining has played a significant role in Chile’s minerals production growth. The expected increases in mine operations will come about mainly through new open pits or expansions of existing surface operations (Table 3). However, the number of open-pit copper mines will decrease from 74% to 66% of the total number of Chilean mines. Gold mines will increase from 63% to 69% of the total, while coal mines will go from 41% to 59%. Most all of the present iron ore production is from surface mines and will continue that way.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillar mining (panel width) is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to prefailure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25% to 40% higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Prefailure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to design improvements, as mines become deeper.

Hydromagnesite (Mg5(CO3).(OH)2.4H20), one of the sedimentary deposits in Salda Lake Basin, is developed under the control of active tectonics regime. Since the occurrence and deposition mechanism of hydromagnesite are unstable under atmospheric conditions, in order to evaluate the precipitation process, systematic host rock, lake water (surface, 20m, 40m, 60m) and hydromagnesite sampling were carried out. Macro, micro, XRD and chemical investigations were done in detail. Not only the results and formation and crystallization mechanism but also hydromagnesite's St values were evaluated. Main resources could be ultramaficmafic surrounding rocks for hydromagnesite formations. However, hydromagnesite development is considered in different phases, because it has showed various characteristics in Kayadibi and Köpekcayin areas. In Kayadibi area Huntide-Dolomite-Aragonite-Hydromagnesite paragenesis has been realized. Hydromagnesite has also formed in Köpekcayiri area, large amount of hyrdomagnesite occurrences and levels various are noticeable. Actual position of hydromagresite levels exhibits tectonic influences in and around the lake. Therefore, the levels seems to exhibit secondary formation properties. In addition, the formations are being still maintained sedimentation as products of a peripheral deposition phases. Resolving and redifferentiation sedimentation processes probably improve in periods of lake water chemistry especially Ca/Mg proportional changes, and also SI variations indicate the mentioned precipitation mechanism. Similarly, side and into the lake hydromagnesite is stored different levels and ultramafics-mafics rocks fallow indicated stages. It is postulated that hydromagnesite formation, which is existed by result of determined developments and multiphase sedimentation, could be originated from probable crack zones on the lake bottom.

The behavior of As bioleaching using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans) in mine tailings containing highly concentrated As contents (i.e., As=33877 mg/kg) was systematically evaluated according to the changes in temperature (25?40°C, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8), pulp density (0.5?4%, temp=30°C, pH=1.8), and initial pH(1.8?2.2, temp=30°C, pulp density=0.5%). The changes in temperature and pulp density affected the As leaching behavior more than the change in initial pH did. Based on the pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) results, the As leaching was attributed to solution acidification. In particular, As leaching was accelerated with increasing sulfate production in the reacting solution. After bioleaching, surface of tailings examined that many pores which dissolved As were formed by a chemical reaction due to bacteria. The As bioleaching efficiency by A. thiooxidans was enhanced by the oxidation of both the added elemental sulfur and the sulfur compounds in the mine tailings. The As bioleaching efficiency was maximized at 50.5% under conditions of an initial pH of 2.2, reaction temperature of 30°C, and pulp density of 0.5%.

Where weak rock zones are encountered in the slopes of an open pit, they may control pit wall stability. Back analysis of slopes involving failure through weak rock enables an estimate to be made of the weak rock strength. A system of consistent rock mass classification is described which enables the weak rock mass material to be described and classified from drill hole core. Correlation with back analysis determined strength allows strength estimates to be assigned to each rock mass classification.

The Flambeau volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit located in northwestern Wisconsin occurs within the southern lobe of the Canadian Precambrian Shield. The steeply dipping tabular body occurs in a complex pile of cyclic schistose intermediate to felsic fragmental volcanics. No chloritic alteration pipe is recognized but adjacent rocks have undergone magnesia metasomatism and subsequently were metamorphosed to the upper greenschist and lower amphibolite facies. Although modest in size the deposit is of special interest in that it has an extensive and well preserved supergene enrichment blanket. Economic minerals found within a pyritized quartz-sericite schist are chalcocite and bornite overlying primary chalcopyrite.

The computer aided mapping of lead concentrations in soil has been carried out around the Doe Run (formerly AMAX-Homestake Lead Toilers) primary lead smelter near Boss, Missouri, through a cooperative Missouri Research Assistance Act program between the lead industry and the University of Missouri. As a part of this research a sequential extraction method was also developed to analyze and determine the various species of lead in the vicinity of the smelter as to possible sources which would suggest pertinent environmental control measures. Practical applications of this data-based scientific approach will be presented.

The effect of addition of a flotation collector (dodecylammonium chloride) on grinding of quartz has been studied. The data obtained are correlated with the results of tests conducted under similar chemical conditions to study influence of these additives on relevant basic sub-processes (primary breakage, pulp fluidity, and dispersion and flocculation of ground products). Such correlations suggest that the role of chemical additives in grinding is determined by their cumulative influence on the above mentioned basic properties of the system.

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

The Shebandowan mine and concentrator, with a capacity of 9072 t/week (10,000 st per week), was opened in 1972 after several years of environmental study and planning. The mine is located in a popular vacation cottage .area about 96 km (60 miles) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Undertaken before environmental assessment procedures had become an established requirement, Shebandowan is one of the first Canadian examples of effectively integrating environmental work into overall planning. Although it is an underground mine, many of the environmental considerations are common to open-pit operations, and hence, it provides a case history for the use of all mine planners. Computers can play a part in such studies by simulating the annual production of mine wastes, by on-line polling of environmental sensors and by processing sensor data. Early attention was focused on establishing base-line conditions in a two-year water quality monitoring program. Since production began, water quality monitoring has shown that mining has not caused any significant changes. However, mine drainage disposal arrangements had to be modified in the light of operating experience. There is no townsite associated with the mine, and workers commute from established municipalities. Harmonious relations have been achieved with local cottage residents after their initial fears were dispelled. Plans are ready to begin revegetating the tailings when a sufficient area of dry elevated tailings has been accumulated. Rehabilitation of the land disturbed during development was begun before start-up and was completed during initial operations.

Selective placement of toxic mine spoil has been advocated as a means of reducing environmental pollution at the source. However, methods of burial to control environmental damage are not well understood. Using the finite element method, this paper investigates the burial of toxic material within low permeability packages below the water table. The effects of differing package and spoil permeabilities, anisotropy, and infiltration are modeled to provide information about their effect on the flow system. Projection can then be made which will assist in the design of the toxic spoil packages to limit the amount of groundwater flowing through them.

Introduction Today, uranium is of great interest because of its application to nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan has been an important source of uranium for more than fifty years. All uranium products are exported. Results In Kazakhstan uranium exploration started in 1948 and developed in several parts of the country thru mining of hard rock deposits. There are known around 50 uranium deposits in six provinces: Shu-Sarysuyskaya (57%), North Kazakhstan (18%), Syrdaryinskaya (15%), Ilyiskaya (7%), Caspian (2%), Balkhash (1%). In the Northern Kazakhstan province, KazSabton took over Tselinny Mining & Chemical Co in 1999. In this province the stockwork is of Paleozoic and Paleozoic folded complexes origin. In the Balkash province some mining of volcanogenic deposits occurred during the Soviet era. This province’s stockwork is of Endogenous origin.In the Ili province uraniumis mainly found in uranium-coal deposits formed by oxidation of the lignite beds roofs. In the Caspian province the Prikaspisky Combine operated since the 1960s a major mining and processing complex on the Mangyshalk Peninsula. This led to the founding of Aktau. It was privatised as Kaskor in 1992 and operations ceased in 1994. The uranium occurrence is associated with the phosphorous from fossil fish bone detritus conglomeration. In the Chu-Sarysu province, which has more than half the country's known resources, both Stepnoye and Tsentralnoye have been operating since 1978 and 1982 respectively. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones. In the Syrdarya province slightly to the west of the province’s center the No.6 Mining group has been operating since 1985. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones.

INTRODUCTION It is now 21 years since Wiegel and Li published their paper on a random version of Gaudin's model for the mineral liberation phenomenon (Wiegel and Li, 1967). This paper was to revitalise interest in North America in one of the most fascinating, difficult and important problems in the field of theoretical mineral processing. Gaudin had many years previously (Gaudin, 1939) already presented a penetrating analysis of the problem and Wiegel and Li based their analysis very closely on the Gaudin model but they realised that the indeterminate geometrical structure of mineralogical materials demanded that only probabilistic models could provide the necessary quantitative information when working with real materials. They proposed and solved a randomised version of the Gaudin model but retained the essential geometrical simplicity of cubic mineral grains and a cubic fracture pattern. Although their model met with some limited success it was to be superseded in due course. During the 1940's and 1950's the classical field of geometrical probability spawned the mathematical discipline of integral geometry and as early as 1965, Bodziony (1965, a,b) showed that the techniques of integral geometry could accommodate the problems associated with the indeterminate nature of the geometrical mineralogical structure, provided that these were couched in probabilistic terms. In particular he showed that the quantitative description of the comminution process and that of liberation could be decoupled with the resulting economy of effort. This idea has profoundly influenced the course of research in liberation theory and has greatly facilitated its application and the measurement of liberation in a practical way. Drilling programs and the study of active geothermal systems have shown that the reservoir rocks in many fields contain minor quantities of base and precious metals. Commonly, base-metal sulfides occur in the subsurface but, where present, Au, Ag, Hg, As, T1 and Sb rich precipitates deposit near, or at, the surface. Although in some fields (Geysers, Larderello, Tongonan) some of the ore minerals (and others) are relict, there is evidence that they are now depositing in a few systems. Recent work on active hydrothermal systems in New Zealand shows that: (1) Sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite (forming veins and disseminated discrete crystals) plus rare pentlandite, cobaltite and arsenopyrite, occur at Broadlands, NZ. Rare quantities of base-metal sulfides also occur in cores and cuttings from the geothermal fields of Waiotapu, Kawerau, Tauhara, and Ngawha. Further, Kakimoto (1983) has identified cassiterite, native silver, and trace gold in cores from Tauhara, in the south-eastern part of the Wairakei field. Bore temperatures at the depths from which these minerals were recovered are mostly between 220° and 300°C, but at Broadlands are locally as low as 120°C. The host rocks are Quaternary talc-alkali, silicic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, andesites, dacite and deep Mesozoic greywackes and argillites; however, there is no obvious relationship between mineralization and stratigraphy, permeability or well output. (2) The deposition of amorphous precious metal precipitates (Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, T1) from hot springs and well discharges has taken place at Broadlands, Waiotapu and Rotokawa; it also occurs at Kawerau. (3) Water discharging from Frying Pan Lake, Waimangu, is presently depositing siliceous sinter containing up to 4.1% tungsten. A characteristic of mineral-depositing fluids in the New Zealand geothermal fields is their very low salinity (total dissolved salts of 3000 ppm or less but with high CO2); they are of near- neutral alkali chloride composition, although water discharging from Frying Pan Lake has a pH of 4.5, and very low metal contents. Very effective concentration processes (10 times for gold at Broadlands) must occur: in the subsurface these include boiling and rapid cooling but near, and at, the surface, mixing of waters of different pH seems to dominate. In particular, descending acid condensate, derived from separated steam and oxidation of H2S mixes with its parent alkali chloride water, resulting in precipitation of amorphous ore metals. Base-metal sulfides also occur in veins and as disseminated grains in geothermal fields at Tongonan, Leyte and Southern Negros, Philippines. These fields have a porphyry-type setting with host rocks of Miocene andesitic lavas and pyroclastics intruded by diorites so that the fields have undergone complicated thermal histories before cooling to their present base temperatures of about 325°C. Precious metals have precipitated from waters from some wells (Leach, pers. comm.) but they do not, as yet, form ore-grade deposits.

In the October 1988 issue of MINING ENGINEERING, J.G. Wargo's paper discusses the problem of measuring and analyzing permeability, porosity, and fracturing in its relation to in situ leaching of disseminated gold deposits. This paper made me suspect that a good deal of information and analysis may have been done on this in reverse in the petroleum industry. Some years ago, I was involved with the US Geological Survey in a project studying the Devonian shale of the eastern United States. The Devonian shale contains gas deposits that have the characteristic of slowly seeping gas over a very long time period. To understand the rate of seepage, considerable study and analysis was done on the interrelationship of poros¬ity, permeability, and fracturing. The purpose was to find out how and why the gas could escape in the varying rates found in wells throughout the formation. It strikes me that this is the mirror image of the problem faced in attempting to understand how a cyanide solution will travel into a deposit. To possibly invent our own personal wheel a little faster, I would suggest a look at the work done on the Devonian shale. Some of it is contained in "Estimates of Unconventional Natural-Gas Resources of the Devonian Shale," US Geologi¬cal Survey Open-file Report 82-474, 1982, and "Additional Data for the Estimates of Unconventional Natural-Gas Re¬sources of the Devonian Shale," Open-file Report 83-676, 1983. It is entirely possible that some of this previous work could shorten the time required to make in situ leaching of dissemi¬nated gold deposits a profitable technique.

Introduction The kinetic approach, to understand a process in detail, has been extensively used in the unit operations of many engineering systems. In green pelletization, the kinetic studies have been mainly oriented towards quantifying the growth mechanism (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Sastry and Fuerstenau, 1977; Capes and Danckwerts, 1965; Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1966; Kapur, 1972) and in a few cases, relating the rate of growth with added liquid content (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Newitt and Conway-Jones, 1958). Studies on the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of the order of the kinetics are virtually non-existent. Sastry and Fuerstenau (1970) classified the agglomeration process into "free in-space" (dilute particle system) and "restricted-in¬space" (highly dispersed particle system) and noted that the former is a second-order process while the latter corresponds to a pseudo first-order rate process. The present paper attempts to describe the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of order of the kinetics, using pyritiferrous shale as the material system. Experimental Pelletization experiments were carried out using -100 mesh pyritiferrous shale, in a laboratory disc pelletizer, at four intervals of pelletization time (15, 20, 25 and 30 min). The green pellets obtained were size analyzed. The size distribution of pellets has generally been represented by a single parameter such as the mean granule diameter, ratio of maximum and minimum pellet diameter, etc. In the present study, the d50 (50% passing size) of pellets has been considered to represent the size distribution of pellet. The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond's Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). INTRODUCTION The Carr Fork property is situated in the Bingham Mining District located on the east slope of the Oquirrh Mountain range in Utah. The mine is adjacent to and lies west of Kennecott's Bingham Pit some 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The Bingham Mining District contains one of the largest copper reserves on North America. Mineralization is associated with the Bingham stock which intruded through some 16,000 feet of sedimentary formations. Mineralization and a1teration zoning was developed radially from the Bingham stock with lower grade disseminated copper mineralization centrally located in the stock and adjoining quartzites. In addition, several garnetized limestone beds abutting the stock were also well mineralized. These skarns will be Carr Fork's initial mining target. Of the several limestone beds, only two, the Yampa and the Highland Boy have significant commercial interest at present. These beds which are 50 feet to 150 feet thick and are separated by 200 to 400 feet of quartzite were highly folded, thrusted and faulted, resulting in a dip variance from 20" to vertical. The predominant dip, however, is between 20" and 45" from horizontal. Quartzites surrounding the limestone beds were subjected to the same degree of tectonic activity with resultant intense fracturing and stress relief. The limestone beds which have a higher elastic modulus and which also experienced fracture healing during mineralization appear to have greater competency and strength than the quartzites. Four shafts nominally 3500 feet deep will provide access to the mine which will be a highly mechanized trackless operation, designed to produce 14,000 tons per hoisting day. First production is scheduled for the last quarter of 1979.
