Solutions to typical leaky ventilation circuits such as multiple entry headings and ventilation tube or brattice face ventilation are obtained using the discrete continuous simulation language SLAM II. While the continuous aspect of the language allows exact numerical solution of leaky systems, the particular discrete-continuous interface of this language is easily adapted to space varying geometry and flow parameters encountered in mine ventilation. The ease with which this simulation system is adapted to ventilation problems and the availability on personal computers encourage its wider application in the field.

This paper presents the results of a column flotation study on a fine feed sample of Florida phosphate. A central composite design was used to study the main and interaction effects of parameters affecting column efficiency. The statistical design is also used to determine the optimum conditions. The results indicate that, depending on the experimental conditions, it is possible to produce a high-grade concentrate with a high recovery. A 15ppm concentration of nonionic frother was found sufficient to maximize the recovery at pH of 9.5.

With the cost competitive nature of material mining, the ability to actively monitor the condition of the conveyor belt systems without personnel dedicated to that task is very desirable. This paper discusses the development of a conveyor belt condition monitoring system, which actively monitors the conveyor belt, without the need to install special antennas. A belt width map can be generated, as well as detection of three types of physical damages: (a) failure of mechanical fasteners, (b) reduction in belting strength due to reductions in competent belt width, and (c) longitudinal belt rips.

Conventional straight-radial SAG mill pulp lifters suffer from incomplete discharge of the rock portion of the charge. The resulting backflow of undischarged rock limits pulp lifter performance and is the major source of wear in pulp lifters. Backflow is increased in pulp discharge cone systems where multiple channels converge towards the central diversion cone. This paper covers recent experience with pulp lifter and discharge cone design supported by a single particle motion model that illustrates the discharge and backflow characteristics of pulp lifters, including the impact of discharge cone configuration.

The beneficiation of barite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting barite's importance as an industrial mineral. Fifty-one studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1920 and 1986, and a review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information, including mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results, flotation parameters, and reagent concentration data, is presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of barite ores from a variety of origins.

This article introduces the basic definitions and philosophy behind process hazard evaluation procedures and the determination of risk as being a function of accident probabi1ity and accident consequence. The general concepts of good engineering practice and predictive hazard evaluation are discussed. The most commonly employed methods used in the processing industries are reviewed with an eye towards briefly presenting what each method offers as far as information, time and resources required, etc. Some initial references on the actual practical use of each technique in the processing industries are also given.

Pyrrhotite (FeS1+x ,0<x<0.15) is an iron sulfide which is considered to be a pest in carbon-in-pulp/ leach (CIP/L) gold processing [l].The perceived influence of pyrrhotite on gold processing by CIP/L is a competing consumption of 02 and CN­as the pyrrhotite dissolves by oxidation [1,2]. The few studies of the oxidation chemistry, kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation ofpyrrhotite are reviewed in detail elsewhere [3].There is broad agreement that the surface of pyrrhotite is very rapidly oxidized to form a thin (e.g. 10 nm) ferric hydroxy-oxide layer which overlays an iron-deficient sulfide lattice covering the original pyrrhotite. The importance of planning ventilation systems in modern coal mines cannot be overemphasized. Interconnected entries, airflows around and through mined-out areas, leakages through stoppings and other control devices, and the use of multiple fans all contribute to the complexity of ventilation network analysis. Fortunately, the availability of computer programs (e. g., Didyk et al., 1978; McPherson, 1966; Wang and Saperstein, 1970) has greatly reduced the difficulty in net- work analysis. However, to obtain a suitable solution to the practical problem, a ventilation engineer has to simulate various conditions based on the proposed ventilation layouts and the capacities of available fans. It is often a trial-and-error process, although engineering knowledge and judgement are required.

This paper describes the innovative procedures employed during the construction of 3 deep shafts within the confines of New York City. The shafts, which varied in diameter from 1.8m (6ft) to 7.3m (24ft) and had an overall depth of 199m (650ft), were excavated by both mechanical and conventional methods. These were subsequently concrete lined, clad steel riser pipes installed and associated surface structures were constructed. Tricky surface rock blasting coupled with the unearthing of unexpected obstructions caused constant uncertainty during the excavation phase. In addition, the necessity of handling men and material in restricted yet deep openings required the development of a safer and more productive shaft construction procedure.

The generation of microscopic bubbles by cavitation may enhance particle-bubble attachment and improve flotation performance. It is shown in this paper that tiny bubbles or cavities can be generated by strong shear and turbulence in high speed liquid flows. These conditions create the necessary pressure fluctuations in the bulk water to cause the local pressure to drop below a critical value. The formation of bubbles is favored by high dissolved gas contents to promote gas diffusion into the cavities, and by the presence of surfactants to provide some mechanical strength due to the adsorbed film. Experimental results on bubble formation by cavitation and consequent flotation of fine silica (d50 = 1.6 µm) are presented.

Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is a versatile, multivariate statistical method that the Bureau of Mines is applying to mineral processing data to achieve data simplification and pattern recognition. The principal components are obtained from an eigenanalysis of the data matrix. To achieve data simplification PCA replaces a larger number of measured variables with a smaller set of principal components and at the same time removes a significant amount of experimental error. Data simplification and error reduction make PCA useful in process control. Plots of the individual principal components form the basis of a pattern recognition technique that allows detection of significant variations in the structure of the data. These applications of PCA are illustrated with appropriate mineral processing data.

The limestone deposit of Gâsgruvan, Sweden contains around 89.2 per cent of calcite. Conventional and column flotation studies have been carried out using sodium oleate and modified fatty acid collectors in the presence of sodium silicate modifier. The effects of collector and silicate concentrations, and particle size on the flotation response of calcite have been investigated. The results have been discussed in comparision to the performance of conventional and column flotation cells. The feed size is found to be a significant factor to achieve a high grade calcite concentrate either by conventional or by column flotation. The loss of selectivity at fine particle sizes is examined using a modified DLVO theory.

Bauxite is currently produced at three centres in Australia: - Weipa in northern Queensland; Gove on the northeastern tip of Northern Territory; and in the Darling Range near Perth, Western Australia. At each of these centres the bauxite is of Tertiary age and occurs as blanket-like, lateritic crusts in which gibbsite is the predominant mineral. Development was essentially in situ although possibly the deposits, particularly at Gove, are in part of transported origin. All of the deposits formed from quartz-rich parent rocks with those at Weipa and Gove being derived from kaolinitic sands while in the Darling Range, granite and other crystalline rocks of Precambrian age immediately underline the lateritic bauxite.

Lightweight cellular grout backfill behind pipe-in-tunnel has been gaining increased acceptance in the tunneling industry and has proved to be both practical and economical. Two successfully constructed projects, the Upper Scioto West Interceptor Sewer (USWIS), in Columbus, Ohio and the Benbrook Pipeline Tunnel Project in Fort Worth, Texas will be discussed. The projects represent two different but successful applications of lightweight cellular grout backfill. The USWIS placed the grout behind precast reinforced concrete pipe, in water bearing limestone, and in close proximity to residential water wells. The Benbrook Project placed grout behind 6,096 meters (20,000 feet) of steel pipe from just two locations, eliminating major surface disruption typically associated with the placement of pumped concrete.

Twelve linear test foundations were constructed over an advancing longwall panel in southern Illinois, six were located along the centerline, and six in the maximum tension zone. One footing in each set was a control foundation constructed according to conventional practice. It suffered severe damage. Footings with reinforcing bare and post-tensioning had much smaller elongations, with the post-tensioning preventing cracking of the footing. Footing-soil interface treatments of plastic-on-sand and plastic-on-soil served to reduce damage. The addition of steel fibers to the footing had about the same effect as an interface treatment. Sill plate construction (butt-jointed versus lap-jointed) appeared to significantly affect the behavior.

Pegasus Gold Corporations' Montana Tunnels mine began oper­ation in March 1987. The process plant at startup consisted of a bulk flotation circuit followed by leaching of the reground bulk concentrate. The leach residue then advanced to selective Pb/Zn flotation. This original circuit had its share of problems, and the leach circuit was abandoned after six months. The bulk flotation circuit was modified to selective Pb/Zn flotation at this same time. Gravity concentration was researched early on, prior to selecting bulk flotation with leach as the flowsheet of choice. Flotation was deemed to be more practical than gravity due to the lower capital and operating costs. No further work was done concerning gravity concentration until 1990 when it was decid­ed to investigate ways to diminish the occurrence of free gold reporting to the flotation tailings.

In the mid 60's Prochem & Hydrochem Development, it's research division, developed the high efficiency Maxflo impeller. Since the Maxflo impeller had a design that had proven to be very efficient in gas-liquid-solid contacting, it was a natural extension to apply this design to flotation & the research commenced in the mid 80's. An opportunity to test the energy savings occurred at Dickenson Mines in 1987, & comparative results with existing conventional flotation cells showed a marked increase in capacity, grade & recovery with 25% less power applied. This r success was followed by the installation of the fist agitated Flotation Colunm (5ft. dia. x 25ft. tall). Bench-scale flotation experiments have been conducted to study the effect of nonionic polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer surfactants on the flotation of Florida phosphate rock. It has been found that PEOs having a molecular weight from 1,200 to 8,000 are effective. Flotation results demonstrate that the addition of nonionic PEO has a favorable effect on phosphate flotation, especially on the flotation of coarse phosphate feed. At about the same collector level, phosphate recovery can be improved by 10-30% with PEO addition. The surface chemistry of phosphate flotation using the fatty acid/fuel oil/PEO system has also been studied to better understand the phenomena involved. The increase in phosphate recovery with PEO addition has been attributed to improved dispersion of fatty acid, which leads to better froth stability and a more hydrophobic surface state.

Attrition of activated carbon in either the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) method of gold extraction can lead to, at the least, loss of expensive carbon that has to be made up, and at the worst, loss of both the carbon and any gold that was attached to it. Carbon attrition therefore represents a significant factor in both the efficiency and cost of the extraction process, and efforts to reduce attrition through process and equipment selection pay dividends. In evaluating carbon attrition potential, one would note that an individual carbon particle is in jeopardy virtually any time it is in motion. Since the motivators of this motion are primary centrifugal pumps, the purpose of this paper is to review the current styles of these pumps now in use and to examine their performance in minimizing carbon attrition.
