Currently there is considerable interest in applying in situ leaching technology to recover copper from oxide ores. In many instances, the distribution of copper mineralization in these deposits is fracture controlled. Laboratory core-leaching experiments have demonstrated that leaching response is sensitive to the dissolution of copper from and the formation of channels along main fractures. Solution short- circuiting can be a major limitation of this technology. This paper describes the application of macromolecular polymers to achieve flow-profile control during leaching. Pre- and post-leached fractures were characterized by computerized tomography (CT) analysis.

When Gas hydrate formation rates have two steps: a nucleation induction step and an agglomeration step. Hydrate induction in distilled water is extremely slow because of lack of nucleating particles. Our laboratory found that synthetic anionic surfactants greatly improve both hydrate induction and agglomeration because the surfactant?s hydrophilic head absorbs water molecules and the hydrophobic tail absorbs hydrocarbon gas molecules, creating necessary nucleation sites. Vast hydrate deposits inhabit seafloors. What is the seafloor hydrate nucleating mechanism? We find that nano-particles of smectite clays (bentonite and nontronite) are hydrate-nucleating sites in sea-water-saturated, packed porous media, especially when trace quantities of anionic biosurfactants adsorb on the clay particles. Microbes and their bioproducts proliferate around seafloor gas hydrate accumulations. The seafloor microbe-mineral-hydrate synergy is explored in this paper. Flotation of coal after multistage addition of frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA). A correlation between low ash content, low specific gravity, and high reactivity of coal was observed. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, removal of mineral matter enhances reactivity through the physical changes brought about by ash removal. A detailed analysis of pre-ignition kinetics indicated the possible effect of bulk density of coal in terms of resistance to volatile release and effective (available) surface area of coal. In the char combustion stage, mineral matter seems to influence reactivity through catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/non- combustible material, internal pore structure, and surface roughness.

A major limitation in developing successful selective, flocculation schemes is the difficulty encountered in adsorbing the polymeric flocculant only on the desired substrate. In this paper, a correlation between selectivity of flocculant adsorption and separation efficiency is outlined, and a potential technique to achieve selective adsorption of flocculants is discussed.

A numerical procedure to model flow networks using a node-based approach is discussed, and the analysis encompasses both steady-state and transient solutions. A family of computer codes has been developed using the node-based approach. This technique is illustrated by applying two of the computer codes to mine ventilation networks.

The volume of recently published material in praise of various refractory gold ore treatment methods is impressive. The authors are unfailingly bright, focused and thorough, and as each paper concludes, the reader is tempted to abandon other methods and embrace this truly better way. But there are many "better ways," many different ores, many different environmental requirements and many differ­ent economic circumstances. As we approach each set of cir­cumstances, it would be useful to have an objective way of comparing various methods in order to identify the most promising approaches. This discussion attempts to provide that.

Cyanide consumption at the Gold Fields Operating Company Mesquite Mine has shown a steady decline since the heap leach operation started up in 1986. A series of solution strength changes and equipment design improvements have resulted in a reduction of sodium cyanide consumption from peak levels above 1.0 pounds NaCN per ton of ore in 1986 to current levels at 0.15 - 0.20 pounds NaCN per ton of ore. Aside from the obvious cost benefits associated with this reagent consumption reduction, the property has also enjoyed environmental benefits which go hand-in-hand with these cost savings.

The American Mining Congress International Coal Show, this year’s largest gathering of coal industry leaders, convened May 5-8 in Chicago. Against a 73 000-m2 backdrop of the coal industry’s most productive equipment,* some 23 000 people heard government and industry executives give guardedly optimistic reports of coal’s near future gains. Although a rocky road lies ahead, operators and suppliers still continue their search to improve efficiency. Among the ideas discussed at the show were better underground communications systems, continuous on-line coal analysis, and recovery of hard-to-float coal.

The US Bureau of Mines conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flammability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective but not particularly efficient in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires. The aim of this paper was to study sludge dewatering. The sludge which was examined in laboratory scale was produced by neutralization of a mixture of metallurgical wastewaters. Experiments were carried out using synthetic wastewaters with chemical composition similar to that of metallurgical wastewaters, resulting from electrolyte regeneration, copper refining and precious metals recovery. During investigations gravitational and vacuum techniques were examined. Parameters such as water volume, height of sludge and time of dewatering were monitored. In this paper the results obtained are presented and discussed. The application of vacuum filtration enables better dewatering and compaction of sludge.

The LKAB group consists of eight producing and trading divisions and subsidiaries, plus six specialist and staff organizations. It employs over 8.000 people and has a turnover of $ 500 million. LKAB produces over 30 million tonnes of ore products per year at its own mines and processing plants, making it one of the world's biggest iron ore exporters. This yearly production includes 15 million tonnes of lamp ore, 3 million tonnes of concentrate, and 8 million tonnes of pellets. Results of an analysis of abyssal benthic megafauna based upon review of nearly 250 hours of videotape and 2149 bottom photographs are presented, and the utility and limitations of such analyses in deep sea biological studies are discussed. The images were acquired at depths of 4400-4800 m during a resource assessment cruise aboard the RV Prospector using a unique, deep-towed, television telemetry system coupled with 35-mm photography. The data review was carried out in support of NOAA efforts to provide adequate environmental baseline information before industrial exploitation of nodule deposits and concurrent monitoring begin.

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolter's hazard exposure. A "microanalysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries, and, from this, a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in root bolting operations. The research emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment-design problems that lead to human-error accidents.

Four methods to assess the relative floatability of fine coal have been tested: flotation with frother only, salt flotation, timed-release analysis, and flotation with frother and collector. A practical and simple criterion that combines the separation efficiency (capacity factor) and kinetic rate constant (intensity factor) has been suggested. Five coal Samples from Utah were tested. Based on test results, it was concluded that the floatability test with collector and frother is closer to practice, and according to the suggested floatability criterion, coal fines can be classified into four categories of relative floatability: very easy, easy, moderate, and difficult.

The possibility of beneficiating a low-grade alunite ore from the Tuscany region of Italy was examined. Flocculation and flotation techniques were investigated to separate alunite and kaolinite from the ore, which also contained feldspar and quartz. Flotation was performed at pH 6.5 with oleic acid as collector and sodium silicate as dispersant. A concentrate containing 12% alunite with a recovery of about 65% and a concentrate containing 28% alunite with a recovery of 84% were achieved from the -38-µm feed samples containing 5.0% and 12.9% alunite, respectively. Poor recovery of alunite was achieved by flocculation methods.
