Mineral processing plants are monitored and controlled using measurements that are usually processed by on-line material balance calculation techniques. However, gross errors, due to sensor biases or failures, may corrupt all the process variable estimates. On-line gross error detection methods are required to ensure efficient mass balance evaluation. In the proposed approach, material imbalances and raw measurement corrections are tested by statistical techniques designed to detect and isolate sensor problems.

Because mineral matter is finely distributed within the matrix, Nigerian Labia coal is nonresponsive to conventional processing techniques. However, testing has shown that Lafia coal can be upgraded by selective oil agglormation. The optimum oil concentration was found to be 10 mL of paraffin per 25 g of coal. A product containing 6% ash and 1.9% sulfur was obtained with a yield of 90%. Optimum results were achieved with a grinding; time of from 2.5 and 3 hrs, which produced a 98% -400 mesh product. However, further grinding wars found to be deleterious to the process. Also, high pH adversely affected concentrate yields. Utilizing kerosene as a bridging liquid, a product containing 4% ash and 0.33% sulfur was achieved at a natural pH of 6.3 with a yield of 85%. At pH 9 and 10, a product containing 4.5% ash was achieved with a yield of >90%.

Diffusion phenomena in mine airways are important to trace gas and dust introduced into mine ventilation flows. Authors have carried out tracer gas measurements to check mine ventilation using concentration-time curves measured in mine airways, however dispersion mechanism to enhance effective diffusion have not been cleared. A numerical model using discrete tracer points dosed into tube flow has been presented to simulate their movements in consideration of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation. Numerical simulations have been carried out to predict distributions of dosed points in tube flows with turbulent velocity profile, turbulent intensity profile and Reynolds stress. The numerical simulation results show that a combination of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation creates extremely large dispersion of points in longitudinal direction and concentration curve with long tail was observed. This dispersion by velocity profile and fluctuation contributes large effective diffusion coefficient compared with original diffusion coefficient dominating in uniform velocity fields. Furthermore, the effect of Reynolds stress on the concentration-time curves is discussed.

Microsilica or silica fume is a waste material generated from silicon or silicon-containing alloys producing electric furnaces. One of its usage is as an additive in the concrete production. This investigation describes a process to use microsilica as a feed material to produce fine silicon carbide. A thermal plasma reactor is used to convert this waste material into a value added ceramic. Sedimentary francolite and magmatic apatite are characterized by specific laser-induced time- resolved luminescence, which allows phosphate to be distinguished from accompanying dolomite. The "selective window" parameters are: he, = 337 nm, delay time after laser pulse is 0.5-5 ps, and detection spectral range is 400-525 nm. In the case of nonuniform distribution of phosphate minerals, it makes it possible to accomplish lasero- luminescent sorting and to receive intermediate product with a lowered dolomite contents.

An extensive series of laboratory cutting tests using linear and rotary cutting machines were carried out with the objective of investigating the feasibility of achieving very high rates of penetration with TBMs in rocks of low to medium strength. These tests were performed with large diameter disc cuttrs at cutter path spacings and penetrations of up to 12 and 1.75 inches, respectively. A predictor model was also formulated to characterize rock cutting at large spacings and penetrations.

Several issues deserve further attention to improve subsidence prediction accuracy. These include: subsidence initiation and development over a setup entry area; subsidence development after face stop; and subsidence over chain pillar. An intensive subsidence monitoring program has been carried out over several longwall panels. A large amount of subsidence data has been collected, analyzed and solution techniques developed. In this paper, some of the measured data. data analysis techniques and the developed prediction methods are presented.

Mineral processing options and technical innovations should be financially assessed. Indeed technical feasibility alone does not offer an adequate process selection criterion. An appraisal by the use of engineering economics principles leads to a more efficient evaluation and selection of feasible mineral processing solutions. Financial consequences of different options synthesised by profitability indices allow better decision making. Selected examples derived from real world problems are used to illustrate the potential of engineering-economics methods applied to mineral processing.

Theories are proposed to explain consistently a class of phenomena and are established with experiences, hypotheses, and laws. Not all concepts need to be presented in a mathematical format. A comminution theory must incorporate fracture physics, particle breakage, stressing events in crushers and mills, material transport, comminution kinetics and models, etc. In this paper the state of knowledge of some of these aspects is discussed. An attempt has been made to show the benefit of theory in comminution practice.

The Chino open pit mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant county in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership, two- thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The concentrator, with a design capacity of 37,000 tons of copper-molybdenite ore per day, was commissioned in July, 1982. The question is posed as to why columns typically have a collection zone 10 m high (H) by 1 m in diameter (D). Three geometry dependent factors are considered: degree of mixing, Np; volumetric bias rate, B; and volumetric gas rate, G. Increasing H:D decreased Np and B, which improves performance but decreases G, which causes the column to approach overloading. Taking typical column operating conditions, it is concluded that a collection zone H:D of 10:l is a reasonable compromise.

Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

In 1997, Sveciala began a program to develop a process to convert waste tires into valuable commodities. A review of numerous approaches revealed shortcomings that were process related or mechanical related, while some of the approaches emphasized he production of low-value products. A market study revealed that a process that could produce a good grade of carbon black would be economically feasible. This paper discusses the laboratory and pilot-plant development and commercial plant design of such a process.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

With low commodity prices and continuing high operating costs, the mining industry must revise planning and operating to take advantage of every tool available. Conveyors operated within open pits are such a tool. Dravo engineers have designed conveyor systems into pits as prime movers in unique situations. Three cases are presented with economic comparisons made to conventional truck haulage. Increasing energy and labor costs tend to make conversion of prime haulage from trucks to conveyors. Long term pit planning and scheduling reduce the effects of conveyor inflexibility.

A high-strength, industrial-grade membrane filter- cloth capable of high flow rates and sub-micrometric particle retention has been developed. A filtration system using this filter- combined with special filtration techniques and using tubular-filters makes possible the filtration of many difficult-to-jilter slurries. Small, discrete, slowly-settling particles are formed into filter cakes that when pulsed of the membrane filter cloth do not redisperse but settle rapidly to form a dense filter under- flow. A positive separation of solids from liquids is obtained.

U. S. petroleum demand has increased at a rate greater than that of domestic production. A domestic energy source that is under serious consideration to augment present supply is oil shale. The Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming represents a resource potential containing about 2 trillion bbls. of oil in shales averaging 15 gallons or more per ton or more than 400 billion bbls. in 30 gallon per ton shales. As construction projects continue to get larger, greater demands are placed on systems to provide higher production rates at reasonable costs. This paper shows the application of dozer-trap loading versus other methods of moving bulk materials. Most conventional methods employ multiple types of heavy equipment to accomplish a single task. Trap loaders fed by dozers and discharging onto overland conveyors offer an alternative/economical means of high volume bulk material movement. A small placer operation can be defined as one with a throughput capacity of 250 cubic yards an hour or less. The success of small placer operations after the values have been established, depend entirely on having the proper design. There are various types of placer deposits including marine, beach, desert, stream, bench, underground and even frozen placers. Each is unique and requires special considerations. Size distribution of alluvial placer ore varies from sand to large boulders. When boulders occur, they can become a problem to all types of excavating to a greater or lesser degree. Clay content and cementing are common in placer deposits. Some clay disperses easily in water while others, if not handled properly, will form clay balls that pick up gold and carry it to tailings. Overburden, depth of bedrock, vegetation, and ground and surface water must all be considered when designing a plant. Any equipment chosen should be capable of processing large volumes of material at a high efficiency. There are usually five steps to processing placer gravels, as follows:
