Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

As we move towards the 21st Century there are several factors that will influence the markets and processing requirements for industrial minerals. Traditional markets for many industrial minerals in the developed world are frequently stagnant or decreasing because of their maturity or due to environmental factors such as reclamation, recovery of byproducts, and recycling. Some industrial minerals are greatly affected by these factors, while others are either immune to or have adapted successfully to meet these challenges. In the developing countries of the world, there is rapid market growth and resource exploitation. The future of specific mineral commodities in several markets will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. Introduction US dependence on external energy sources is dangerous because of unstable political situations existing in key energy exporting countries. So, recent national energy policies call for increased reliance on domestic energy sources. Coal ranks as the most feasible domestic energy source due to its abundant reserves and continental distribution. But to efficiently extract these coal reserves, huge sums of capital funds are needed. Due to the depressed economy, lenders of capital funds are forced to be more stringent with loan applications. This results in fewer loans granted. In many cases, it is uncertain if funding can be obtained. Furthermore, the greatest level of domestic mine financing is expected to be in the coal sector. Demand for capital in the domestic coal industry is anticipated to increase 80% by 1990. The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York warns that these future needs cannot be met by the present capital markets. This article analyzes the current and expected situations of the capital markets available to the domestic coal industry, including: • current and expected future types of financing used in the domestic coal industry; • problems the domestic coal industry may encounter as it seeks capital; and • the future availability of capital funds as concluded from analysis of the first two items. Background Information Regardless of industry, all projects or ventures can be divided into four basic stages: generation; evaluation; selection; and execution. Within the mining industry, one can break down these stages to draw a clear picture of mine development, as shown in Fig. 1. Each successive stage has a corresponding risk level. This risk level defines the type of financing available to the mine operator. Mining Venture Risks A coal mining venture can be characterized by its unique blend of technical and financial risk. As the mine moves through different development stages, varying proportions of each of these risks are encountered. It is these risks that the lender evaluates to determine project suitability. For a coal mining venture, the major complexities generally occur with the technical risk. These include: • quantifying the coal reserves: • assessing the feasibility of the mining method; and • evaluating the design of the wash plant. The reserve risk is gauged by the amount of measured, mineable, and saleable reserves. The greater the latter amounts, the lower the risk. Secure title to the reserves plus title for any surface areas required are also of concern to the banker. This paper will discuss state-of-the-art applications of GPS automation in mobile conveying systems. Robotic mobile conveying systems increase profitability, optimize stacking and reclaiming operations, and control complex interfaces more accurately than other systems. We will also discuss the application process in machine-to-machine coordination, selection of the appropriate GPS system, and Ethernet considerations. As the leading supplier of GPS-controlled mobile conveying systems, we'll draw on our experience at Morenci, Radomiro Tomic, Zaldivar, El Abra (Figure 1), and El Tesoro mines in the US and South America to demonstrate system reliability and the lessons we've learned through analysis of these projects.

Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. If ground water is encountered, its air lift (ground water flow) production can be measured at distinct intervals using a surface water flow measuring device, such as a portable Parshall

In connection with Project Payette, which is concerned with the detection of underground nuclear explosions, it was necessary to determine the technical feasibility of constructing and maintaining a large (approximately 315 feet in diameter) unsupported underground cavity at a depth of approximately 2700 feet in the Tatum Salt Dome in Mississippi. The dimensions and the location of the cavity in the salt dome were governed by criteria laid down by the Atomic Energy Commission. Within the framework of the specified criteria, cavities of various shapes and dimensions could be utilized. One aspect of the feasibility study was to investigate the structural stability of various cavity shapes and to recommend a preferred shape. This paper summarizes the studies that were conducted to evaluate the structural stability of various proposed cavities.(l)

The efficiencies of plant scale comminution processes are often evaluated by various indices that are calculated and/or measured somewhat independent of the performance of any associated downstream froth flotation processes. In order to compare some specific comminution factors such as energy utilization, media consumption, equipment utilization time, etc. comparisons of comminution efficiency independent of flotation behavior are appropriate. However, as more and more detailed plant level information is gathered on the joint and highly interactive nature of comminution and froth flotation, it is becoming increasingly obvious that knowing and using simple efficiency indices are not enough. What is needed are more performance related measures of the efficiencies of the combined size reduction -froth flotation system for effective plant level economic optimization to occur. The purpose of this paper is to present some examples of important interactions that influence the joint efficiencies of size reduction and froth flotation processes.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. Utility coal specifications usually contain a requirement for a maximum moisture content in order to prevent coal handling problems and to minimize evaporative losses in the boiler. As most coal cleaning processes are water-based, dewatering and sometimes thermal drying steps are required to meet moisture specifications. Screens are often used for dewatering, with centrifuges and filters used to further reduce moisture in many cases. Algorithms to predict the performance of commercial dewatering devices were developed for the Coal Cleaning Simulator running under Aspen Plus? during a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. These algorithms include calculations for size degradation in the devices and fines loss to effluents, where appropriate, and a calculation for moisture content of the product based on particle size and specific gravity distribution. This paper discusses the algorithm for coarse and fine coal centrifuges and gives comparisons between predicted moisture and solids loss and published moisture and solids loss values for various particle size ranges.

Demand for construction raw materials depends on investment in housing, other buildings and infrastructure. The provision of these materials requires early knowledge of future trends in construction investment. By using scenarios possible future developments and bandwidths can be explored. Policy makers in government organisations as well as in the private sector can base their policy decisions upon these insights. In this paper we discuss the case of sand and gravel in the Netherlands. We will show that, depending on the future role of government and the degree of internationalisation, the long term demand for construction raw materials will strongly diverge. Nevertheless there are some common developments such as a decreasing population growth, a smaller share of the labour force in total population and a growing wealth. In different scenarios we will encounter different conditions for minerals provision and for sustainable development.

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

INTRODUCTION The literature on project management considerations and techniques for large rail rapid transit projects in mid-1979 was fairly large and getting larger. UMTA was establishing special organizational elements to deal with the subject as it related to those properties requesting capital assistance, and comprehensive project management plans were being requested from those properties as an early step to build confidence in UMTA that the particular project could be planned, designed, and executed efficiently and effectively, thereby using critically short capital assistance funds to best advantage. In the late 60's and early 70's, the choices of models for heavy rail construction would have been quite limited.., and perhaps much simpler than was the case in 1979. One of the writers was with an agency in 1979 in the process of finalizing its organization for project implementation after several years of study and had the opportunity to review the experiences of others at length, presumably to build on the success and to try to avoid the pitfalls and failures. The properties that were surveyed all reported more or less success stories. One could only conclude that there are many ways to organize for a major transit (construction) project and that there is a great variety of viable management structures, but it seemed that chances for success were best where the executing property had prepared a comprehensive project management plan, then resolved to follow it. Perhaps more important, a commitment or prior approval had been sought from UMTA as to the validity of the project management plan, and the property was allowed to proceed without detailed prior UMTA review or approval of all specific intermediate steps. Most important, however, an early overall UMTA funding commitment had been obtained that permitted some reasonable expectation of the rate of funding, perhaps by commitment

Prior to mining, all rocks contained in a mineral deposit must be placed in one of several categories known as ore types. Each ore type describes a different way that the rock will behave in processing. The ore type determines which process stream a particular mined unit will be sent to, sets expectations for process engineers and metallurgists, and forms the basis for recovery predictions and production estimates. At first, ore types are assigned mainly by geologists based on visible geological criteria (dominant ore mineralogy, estimated grade, rock type, alteration type). As metallurgical tests are carried out and process data accumulate, the resulting criteria may be factored into the ore typing process, typically as assays and recoverable metal using the relevant process(es). Other variables may also be incorporated into ore typing at operations if they are particularly important, such as grindability, preg-robbing, gangue reagent consumption, and the presence of especially deleterious minerals such as talc or smectite. The mine operation department may also redefine ore types and/or process destinations based on economic criteria. A “best” ore type is designated that (in theory) best describes how the rock will behave in processing. Codes representing this ore type are entered into the drill-hole database, then interpreted on cross sections and level plans, and finally added to the block model. Ore types are iteratively reexamined and adjusted over the life of a project. Major difficulties in effective ore typing are (1) lack of communication between geologists and metallurgists, (2) the imprecision inherent in imposing clean categories on messy natural systems without discrete divisions, (3) the need for ore types to provide useful information for a wide range of processes, (4) difficulties in scaling up laboratory test results to mine production, and (5) conflict among geological, metallurgical, and economic criteria for ore typing.

An availability approach for determining the capacity of a major Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system to be used in the Yuabaoshan Surface Coal Mine in China is presented in this paper. Based on previous studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, a model was developed, taking into account all random failures, to present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity, are discussed.

Various methods have been developed through US Bureau of Mines research to remove gas in advance of, during, and subsequent to mining. These include drilling horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening, and vertical boreholes stimulated for drainage in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. Techniques and equipment now exist that allow drilling a borehole at any angle to the vertical, and even along an arc. Stimulation treatments have also been developed that provide for increased gas production capability. This paper describes the long-term production history of five select gas drainage installations. The Bureau of Mines conducted or participated in four studies. The remaining study was conducted by the Equitable Gas Co. Principles of storage, release, and migration of coal bed gases The amount of gas contained within any given area of a coalbed depends on the coal's inherent storage capacity and the physical conditions of the coalbed. The gas storage capacity of coal is primarily a function of rank. As such, it cannot be affected by the presence of drainage holes (Kim, 1977). Certain physical conditions of the coalbed can, however, be changed that will affect the release and migration of gas. By pumping water out of the coalbed through the vertical boreholes, two important changes occur - pressure is reduced and water saturation is lowered. Reducing reservoir pressure releases gas as the coalbed adjusts and equilibrates gas to the change. Increasingly large amounts of gas are released for each incremental decrease in pressure. Lowering the water saturation level raises the permeability of the coalbed to gas and allows the gas to more readily migrate to the wellbore (Kisse and Edwards, 1975). For horizontal boreholes completed near mine openings, the coalbed has already undergone a pressure or water saturation reduction phase. This condition thus allows such boreholes to be highly productive with minimal water production. Multiple seam mining is prevalent in Southern Appalachia because economically mineable coal seams are numerous and frequently occur in close vertical proximity. West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia have 117, 55, and 40 mineable coal seams respectively. It is extremely rare to have an underground mine that has not been undermined, overmined, or has mining adjacent to it. In many cases the multiple seam mining is concurrent with extraction sequenced in superjacent seams. Because underground mining is focused on recovering the most valuable reserves, mining is rarely practiced from the top seam down, which is the practice most conducive to stability. The combination of room-and-pillar mining methods that include development only, small block, partial retreat, full retreat, and longwall mining produce a wide range of mining geometries and complexity in underlying and overlying seams. In the future, the number of multiple seam operations will increase as reserves are depleted and future mines are, by default, located closer to abandoned mine workings. The improved coal market has transformed many formerally uneconomically mineable seams into attractive reserves. The approaches and methodologies used for multiple seam stability analysis are dictated by the site conditions, including overburden/interburden thickness and lithology, mining geometry, and the mining methods in both the active and abandoned mines. Multiple seam stability analysis using analytical and numerical methods is illustrated by two case histories that reflect close proximity room-and-pillar mining and mining in bump prone situations.

According to statistical theory, the geostatistical methods of ore reserves estimation are greatly superior to any other method. However acceptance of geostatistics by the mining industry has been slow and not as wide spread as one would expect. One of the reasons for this cautious approach is that it is often questioned whether the geo- statistical assumptions are satisfied in real world situations. When blocks of ore are estimated in a mineral deposit, geostatistical theory can be used to determine which method of estimation should give the best results. Using this theory, the relationship between estimated value and true block value can be quantified. There is a need to verify that this theoretical relationship is actually observed in practice, and that the block estimates ' obtained using the theoretical ly best method of estimation, are actually most similar to the true block values. In this paper the results expected according to the theory are compared with the results actually obtained. Sample values from a large bedded gold deposit have been used. Blocks of ore have been estimated by a number of methods, including the polygone, inverse power of the distance, kriging, logarithmic kriging and other geostatistical methods. The block estimates have been calculated from samples on a large grid, and compared with the true block values obtained from additional samples on a much smaller grid. The results of this comparison show extremely good agreement between theory and actual results.

Measurement of gamma radiation occurring in nature to characterize geological formations has been widely recognized in mineral exploration. Different methods and apparatuses have been developed for drill hole logging purposes. Geological formations vary in amount of naturally emitted gamma radiation. A gamma signature from a geological formation is captured by utilizing different types of gamma detectors. A natural gamma radiation detector (NGRD) can be used to control mining whenever there is a significant difference between the radiation levels in the mineral or ore being mined and the waste materials surrounding the ore. Surface miners, such as the one shown in Figure 1, can precisely control the elevation of the cutter as the machine moves over the surface of the formation. This type of machine is predominantly used in selective mining operations, e.g. surface coal mining. If there is a means to know the position of the cutter relative to the interface between the ore and waste, the miner can recover all or most all of the valuable mineral with very little out-of-seam dilution. This paper discusses the results of a successful application of gamma detectors to control a surface miner at one of North American Coal Corporations? locations - Red Hills Mine. The mine has nine coal seams in total with thicknesses ranging from 12? to 60?. The bottom six seams (Figure 2) are minable. The mine has complex geology and a significant amount of annual rainfall (4.7 ft). The mine produces approximately 3.5 million tons of coal and about 40 bcy of overburden per year. The operation utilizes diverse mining equipment including Dragline Marion 8200, electric shovel P&H 2800, Caterpillar end dump trucks CAT 785 and 789; bulldozers CAT D11, D10, D8, and D6. Coal is mainly extracted by utilizing a Wirtgen SM 4200 surface miner that is loading CAT 785 trucks with high volume coal bodies and payload of 150 t. Operational cutting depth is 24 inches with maximum cutting depth of 36 inches. Surface miner operators determine a cutting depth based on multiple cues, the most important being visual observations of a coal seam being cleaned or mined. The cleaning process involves removal of the last foot of waste material covering the coal seam. This is one of two critical phases in the coal extraction process. If, during the cleaning process, an operator sets a cutting head too deep, valuable product is wasted. If it is set too shallow, waste material is left to be mined with the coal. The second critical phase occurs in the last cut on the interface between the coal and waste material at the bottom of the coal seam. If the cutting head goes deeper than favorable, then waste material is delivered to a power plant.

Matching the productivity gains of continuous mining machines with the ever increasing performance levels achieved by longwall units has required creative thinking to assure that development is completed in time for uninterrupted longwall production. By using management information systems to coordinate support operations, the most productive planning decisions can be made. This paper focuses on the role of computer technology tools in achieving improved productivity from both longwall and continuous miner sections. The primary emphasis is on the planning process and the methodology developed to guarantee the best allocation of management and manpower resources.
