The Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization zone near Molai (Greece) was explored by more, than 60 drillholes. Promising results led to the decision of additional drillholes in order to confirm the expected spatial extension of the deposit. A multiobjective approach is described which optimizes the location of a set of 5 additional drillholes. The decision is based on estimation errors for grade, thickness and depth of the main ore bearing layer, with respect to cut-off values for grade and thickness. The linear combination of these variables defines a favorability index which is used for mapping optimal drillhole locations. The map shows several clusters of favorable cells. A declustrering algorithm is used to select a representative cell for drilling in each cluster.

With the invention of prime movers, it was initially power engineering which dominated the development of industrial history before it was replaced by production techniques resulting from the more widespread use of machines. With the advances in the field of data processing and with the introduction of novel communication techniques, it is information technology- which today is having an ever increasing impact on technological progress. The main objectives of information technology in this context are a positive influence on the ?time? factor as well as the provision of tools to handle the complexity governing many operational processes through a concentration of information for the decision-making process. The German hardcoal industry became aware of the chances inherent in these new technological possibilities for the optimization of operational sequences and of decision-making and planning processes as a potential for success at an early stage and it has worked out a purposeful concept for their implementation.

The U. S. Department of Energy is constructing and operating the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), a research and development facility near Carlsbad, New Mexico, to determine whether or not defense-generated high-level radioactive waste can be stored safely in bedded salt. The goal of the WIPP modeling program is to develop the capability to predict room responses from one site to another without a priori knowledge of the actual room responses. Data from one of the early WIPP excavations, called the South Drift, have already been used to form an initial evaluation of computational models for predicting room closures as a result of salt creep [Morgan et al., 19851. In that study, a significant unresolved discrepancy existed between predicted and measured room closures. It was suggested that future studies address alternate forms of the constitutive law. In this paper, an alternate form of the creep model for salt is used that is founded upon the deformation- mechanism map for the micromechanical deformation processes. This model embodies both steady-state and transient creep. Also, quasi-static plasticity is incorporated into the complete constitutive model for salt. The conclusion is drawn that the combination of the mechanistic creep model, plasticity, and flow potential can approximate the late time South Drift deformation. Further improvement of the model fit of plasticity in the future is expected to further improve the simulation.

Approximately 30 miles east of Chicago on the southern shores of Lake Michigan stands Bethlehem Steel's newest fully integrated steelmaking facility - the billion dollar Burns Harbor plant. The initial phase of "green field" construction that began in 1963 was directed to the creation of high quality finishing facilities. In late 1964 the 160" plate mill came "on stream" followed closely by Sheet and Tin and Hot Strip facilities. Unit train shipments of slabs primarily from the Lackawanna plant located near Buffalo constituted the input materials for the new mills. In 1967 a hot metal facilities program was announced for Burns Harbor that at its completion would make the plant fully integrated. Incorporated within the program were: 1. A new high performance 50" x 96" slabbing mill complete with a battery of soaking pits. 2. A two vessel Basic Oxygen Furnace Shop. 3. (1) battery of 6 meter high Coke Ovens with attendant coal handling facilities. 4. A 3800 feet long vessel loading & unloading dock. 5. The first conveyor belt fed Blast Furnace in the United States. 6. An extensive materials handling system for receiving, stocking and reclaiming from storage the raw materials for the Blast Furnace and Coke Ovens operation. The intent of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the functions and components of the materials handling system noted above.

FOREWORD In 1974, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction (The Client) which subsequently became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt assigned responsibility to the Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman and Company) for the design and construction of the tunnels under the Suez Canal. For this project the Arab Contractors of Cairo and Tarmac International of London formed a joint Venture, called Osmac. Sir William Halcrow and Partners of London are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as a Sub-Contractor to the Contractor. The advisory consultant of the client is a joint Venture between Tippetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton (TAMS) of New York and Arab Consulting Engineers (ACE) of Cairo. INTRODUCTION A site investigation was carried out between Km 141 and Km 150 Suez Canal chainage to determine the ground conditions relevant to design and construction of a road tunnel under the Suez Canal. A feasibility study included aerial surveying, geological mapping and the drilling of 8 boreholes. Detailed investigation included the drilling of 105 boreholes, sampling, piezometer installation, pumping tests, and the digging of trial pits and trial excavations. In-situ work comprised SPT, permeability tests and dilatometer tests. Laboratory testing included soil classification tests, compaction tests, California Bearing Ratio tests, shear strength determination and oedometer consolidation tests as well as chemical analysis of both soil and ground water. The investigation revealed that the ground conditions at the first proposed El Shatt site (Km 148.5) were not favourable for bored tunnelling, whereas they were more favourable at the southern El Shatt site (Km 150.0).

This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

By using physical and chemical means to increase the bulk density of newly broken coal freed from the mine face, the potential to improve coal mine productivity is significantly enhanced. It is estimated that by increasing bulk density, greater tonnages can be placed in fixed volume scoops and shuttles cars to improve production by as much as 10% to 20%. Such improved packaging to achieve new levels of volumetric efficiency might require only small and easy to implement changes to present downstream mining operations. Opportunities exist for improving broken coal bulk density from the moment of breakage, during transport across the continuous miner or loading machine, during discharge into the haulage unit, and after placement in the haulage unit. Physical/chemical methods for broken coal compaction in mobile, fixed volume units in underground operations are discussed.

The phenomenon of acid drainage is likely to occur whenever pyritic rock is broken up, permitting access of air and water. The basic chemistry of the oxidation process is described by the equations below:- FeS 2 +1120 + 7 02 ➔FeS04 +112S04 +1440k.J This reaction proceeds rather slowly, although believed to be bacterially catalysed to some extent. Once sufficient ferrous ions and acidity have been established the following two reactions take over, yielding the same net result but at a much greater rate. First, ferrous ions are oxidised to ferric; this is an extremely slow reaction unless bacterially catalysed.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of the adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

According to Darcy?s law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

Sotiel mine is situated in the Iberian Pyrite Belt in southern Spain, some 40 km north of the port of Huelva. Although mining operations at the site date back to Roman times, the present mine came into production in 1983 and 5.6 million tonnes of ore had been extracted by 1993. The orebody is volcano-sedimentary and consists of fine grained copper, lead and zinc minerals in massive pyrite surrounded by slates and volcanics. Prior laboratory research had resulted in the synthesis of a new collector, belonging to the MercaptoBenzoOxazole (MBO) class that acts selectively towards Cu and Zn minerals after activation with CuS04. The MethylMercaptoBenzoOxazole (MMBO) version of this collector had been used for the laboratory flotation of Cu minerals and sphalerite activated by CuS04. This resulted in identification of the optimal physicochemical conditions for laboratory-cell flotation of the two minerals from samples of complex sulphide ores, and subsequently the reagent has been tested in the Sotiel plant (Spain). The plant has three flotation sections. With conventional re-agents, the first section yields a Cu concentrate grading 21% with a total recovery of 29%, and the second one yields a 40% Pb concentrate with total recovery of 34% and a 47% Zn concentrate with total recovery of 78%. Application of the new synthetic reagent in the copper and zinc circuits produces a more selective process with a decrease in re- agent concentration grade and recovery are increased by 2 and 9 points respectively in the case of Cu and by 1 and 3 points where Zn is concerned. Moreover, the penalty elements in the Cu concentrate are halved.

An optimized counting scheme for a mixture of radon daughters and thoron daughters typical of Ontario mines, developed in a previous study, was experimentally examined under mine conditions. The counting scheme requires a 10 minute sample and 5 1/2 hours counting instead of a 60 minute sample and more than 40 hours counting as required by a previous method. Taking into account the uncertainties associated with concentrations, flowrate and radioactive decay, the precision of the counting scheme was analyzed and found to be on average better than the 40 hour method.

The results of a survey of 46 West Virginia coal samples, employing the Office of Coal Research-Band coal sewage treatment process, indicated that the Freeport coal and Bakerstown coal from Preston County, Pittsburgh coal from Harrison and Ohio County and the Sewickley coal from Monongalia County offer outstanding potential for water clarification. Oxidation, steam treatment and acid and base washing of coal generally resulted in small positive or negative changes to the water clarification capacities of the coal while the employment of prepared coal fractions resulted in more significant benefits. Of the coals tested, those fractions with high ash, high sulfur and low Btu generally possessed the highest adsorption capacities.

That is to say, the set of tasks ensures the geological data base at the stage of the deposit exploring and also its further use and. updating at the exploration stage. The following main elements may be ear-marked in the complex: (1) geological data base (GDB), (2) the data input system, (3) GDB maintainance, (4) "Geologist" geological application package (GAP). The White Pine room-and-pillar mine started in 1955 from a suboutcrop, down gentle dips, and with a competent sandstone roof. As mining depths increased, extraction decreased 1% every 35 feet. Moreover, roofs became shaly and less competent, and regions of high fault and joint densities, sometimes with and some- times without high lateral stresses, increased the tendencies towards roof falls. Instinctive reactions towards narrower openings did not alleviate the problem. Careful consideration of rock mechanics principles culminated in the development of two variants to the conventional room-and-pillar mining system based on the concept of stress relief through load deflection. The two systems-EquiAdvance Cave, and PressureArch Panel Mining-are complementary. The objective of the former system is to provide relief from lateral stresses through advance caving and in the process also to achieve higher extraction at depth. Where surface subsidence cannot be allowed, the alternative PressureArch Panel concept is utilized to provide stress relief and moderately high extraction ratio. Both systems have been under trial for over three years and, together, produced over three million tons of copper ore. These two systems, and their production test results to date, are described.

Most commercial explosives contain from 70% to 94% (by weight) ammonium nitrate. When some of the explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through either spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates can leach into the ground water. In recent years, state and federal regulators have applied more stringent water-quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. When mining conditions permit, bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice. ANFO is less costly than other explosives but it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. These approaches range from controlling explosive losses to treating the mine effluents. In this paper, controlling explosive losses is addressed For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines to limit losses during storage, handling and use are described in detail.

Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. Newmont Gold Company is the largest producer of gold in North America. Accurate resource estimates are critical to planning the mining in a year of over 90,000,000 t (100,000,000 tons) of mill, leach and waste grade material, from which over 47 t (1,500,000 oz) of gold are recovered. Resource estimates are updated frequently to take advantage of new drilling, improved geologic understanding and additional production reconciliations. At Newmont Gold, indicator kriging is the primary method being used to create resource estimates. Indicator kriging (IK) is a well accepted method of resource estimation; however, many details of the IK process which are critical to producing a useful resource estimate have not been well documented. An IK model must have several characteristics in order to be a useful resource estimate: the model must take into account geologic features of the mineralization; model creation cannot require too .much time; the model must accurately reflect the effects of selective mining; the model must be stored in an easily accessible format; and the model must be useable with a variety of cutoff grades. This paper will show how Newmont Gold implements the IK process in order to achieve these goals.

In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.
