Advances are made in the field of mineral processing on a continuing basis both in the industry and the academia. These advances do not always get used fully because of the inherent difficulties in the transfer of knowledge and reduction to practice. In recent years, knowledge engineering is being increasingly employed in other fields to overcome some of these difficulties. This paper presents a vision of how knowledge engineering can be applied to the benefit of the mineral processing industry and includes a discussion of associated principles, techniques, and advantages.

A control system for reducing peak loads on mine conveyor networks is proposed. The system involves continuous monitoring of flows into the conveyor network and section feeders with variable discharge capability. The control strategy uses differences in material transit times from various production units to the transfer points in the network to forecast load levels that will be intersected by the discharge of the controlled feeders over future time intervals. Feeder setpoint adjustments are made to prevent excessive peaks in the combined flows at the transfer points, while maintaining adequate feeder throughflow to avoid production bottlenecks.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. DPM exposure is therefore regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The current monitoring process takes days or weeks for exposure levels to be known, and a real-time monitoring device is needed. It is believed that infrared spectroscopy has potential for use in a real-time, field-portable device. This paper presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios.

During the past decade, operators and researchers have worked toward a better understanding of the mechanisms operating in flotation. As reported by W. J. Trahar in 1981, this work commenced with the operators determining a relationship between recovery and particle size. They defined three particle size ranges, that being fine, intermediate and coarse. It was noted that the fine and the coarse ranges had slower flotation rates than the intermediate range as demonstrated by their lower recoveries.

The Brightwater Conveyance System consists of four tunnel segments in three tunnel con-tracts, comprising over 21,760 m (71,400 ft) of pressurized face tunneling in complex glacial and non-glacial soft ground conditions with a large proportion 60 m (197 ft) or more below the ground surface with up to 7 bars groundwater head. This resulted in unique technical challenges for establishing geotechnical baseline values. The process used to develop these baseline values and specifications with regard to the level of risk that the owner, King County, was willing to accept is described in this paper.

Mineral sands mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon will disturb over 2,500 ha of prime agricultural farmland in Virginia and North Carolina (USA) over the next 20 years. Mining of the Virginia deposit was initiated in 1997 and approximately 750 ha have been disturbed to date with approximately 150 ha reclaimed to support a mix of agricultural post-mining land uses. While considerable university research and corporate effort were devoted to developing environmental management systems and reclamation protocols for these lands, specific indicators of sustainability and restoration success were lacking. By 2003, it became apparent to the mining operator (Iluka Resources), local land-owners/farmers, local government, and the regulatory authority that testable indicators of reclamation success were essential for long-term sustainability. Virginia Tech worked cooperatively with all stakeholders to review the pre-existing research base and to propose reasonable expectations of post-mining soil productivity levels. The state regulatory authority reinforced its position on a number of associated issues including necessity of topsoil return and specific comparative crop yield targets. Virginia Tech, Iluka Resources, and a local leaseholder (Carraway-Winn family) agreed to jointly manage a 45-ha research demonstration farm where the effects of alternative soil reconstruction practices are being rigorously monitored for both row crops (corn and wheat) and forage production. All mined land crop yields are also compared to an adjacent undisturbed exceptional quality prime farmland soil. Corn and wheat yields in 2005 and 2006 were significantly above county average yields (regulatory target level) and approximately 75% of undisturbed adjacent prime farmlands. This cooperative effort allows all clientele groups to objectively assess the post-mining productivity of these mined lands while providing an invaluable educational opportunity for the mining industry.

For the past few years Caro's acid has been used for the treatment of cyanide containing slurry effluents, providing a feasible alter­ naive to other slurry treatment processes including !NCO SO2 / Arr and ferrous sulfate. Presently, mines using Caro's acid gen­erate their own Caro's acid onsite making a relatively low quali­ty product. It was at this point where we, at Degussa Corporation, decided to focus our efforts on engineering a Caro's acid genera­tor capable of cost effectively producing a high quality Caro's acid solution, thus reducing operating costs significantly. Caro's acid or peroxymonosulfuric acid is not a new chem­ical nor is it new to Degussa. The product was named after Heinrich Caro (1834-1910), a German chemist who first described its synthesis and its oxidizing properties in 1898. Degussa has been producing the potassium salt of Caro's acid as the triple salt, 2KHSO5 - 2KHSO4 - K2SO4, called Caroat®, for over 30 years. Caroat® is used for household and denture cleansers, as a bleaching agent in dish washing detergents, in printed circuit board etching and for cyanide destruction in the plating industry. From our experience in producing Caroat® Degussa developed its new Caro's acid based DegOX™ technology for the treat­ment of cyanide containing effluents from gold and silver mines.

Lornex Mining Corporation operates an open pit porphyry copper mine in the Highland Valley southwest of Kamloops with a rated capacity of 43 500 TPD (48,000 TPD). It went into production in April 1972. Its concentrator consists of two grinding and flotation circuits in parallel each composed of a 6 000 KW (8,000 HP) 9,75 m (32 foot) diameter by 4,724 m (15'-6") semi-autogenous primary mill feeding two 3 000 KW (4,000 HP) 5,029 m (16.5 foot) diameter by 7,01 m (23 foot) secondary ball mills each feeding a bank of flotation cells. ,The original tailings system picked up the tailings from the flota¬tion circuits in a concrete collection box in the mill and carried the 36% solids density by weight slurry 488 m (1,600LF) through a 1100 mm (42 inch) diameter wood stave pipeline on a .46 percent slope to three 99,06 m (325 foot) diameter center drive thickeners. From the collection box under the thickeners the tailings line con¬sisted of three sections, carrying 50% solids density slurry. The first section consisted of 1460 m (4,800 LF) of 910 mm (36 inch) asbestos cement pipe for gravity flow from the thickener under flow elevation of 1252,4 m (4,109 feet) to the first pump station at elevation 1207,6 m (3,962 feet). Eight concrete drop boxes were used to limit the maximum slope on the pipeline to 0.5 percent.

A new magnetic liner, with unique magnetic circuit and novel structure designs, was developed. It was characterized by light weight, low noise, as well as corrosive and abrasive resistance. The wear rate of the magnetic liner was one twentieth and one ninth those of the manganese-alloy steel and rubber ones respectively. The forming mechanism of the protective layer and that of influencing factors on magnetic liners were also investigated. The research results could not only instruct using magnetic liner, but also widen their application.

In the operation of this mobile-modular system, inexpensive fiberglass charcoal columns are loaded with gold at strategically-located adsorption stations. The loaded columns are then shipped to a centralized stripping facility. After stripping, the columns are returned to the adsorption station. The advantages of this system are as follows: •Easy scale up from pilot plant to full production. •Low capital and operational costs. •Gold production quickly reacts to changes in ore production. •The solution circuits are simple and easy to maintain. •Charcoal damage is greatly reduced.

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.

With the rapidly growing use of hydraulics in mining equipment, maintenance personnel should be familiar with the various components in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic systems do wear out - the fluids they transport are hot and turbulent, the equipment they power often imposes tremendous pressure pulsations and bending stresses, and the working environment is harsh. Therefore, even though hydraulic hoses are made of remarkably trouble-free components, they do need to be replaced periodically. There must be coupling methods that allow hoses to be replaced without disturbing other components. Couplings must also provide a variety of leak-resistant connections between hoses and other components in the hydraulic circuitry. Threaded Connection and Seals Hydraulic coupling thread ends and sealing arrangements are standardized, with many types available. Their outward appearance varies, but coupling configurations are recognizable by examining threads and seals and comparing them to the examples provided here. Iron Pipe Thread There are two kinds of iron pipe threads normally used in mining equipment circuitry - National Pipe Tapered Thread for Fuels (NPTF) and National Pipe Straight Thread Mechanical Joint (NPSM). The NPTF seal is the engagement of the coupling threads, called thread interference. When tightened, the tapered thread of the male fitting binds into that tapered thread of the female fitting to form a relatively leakproof seal (Fig. 1). In the NPSM seal, there is a 30° angle seat machined into the end of the male NPTF fitting. This seat engages with a mating 30° angle cone on the inside of the female fitting. Female NPSM fittings have straight threads, as opposed to the tapered threads of the NPTF fittings. However, most NPTF solid male fittings also have a 30° angle seat enabling them to be used with NPSM female fittings (Fig. 2). JIC and SAE Fittings Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) seals are formed by joining two mating, conical metal surfaces. The coupling threads are used to bring and hold these surfaces together to form a leak-resistant seal. A JIC connection is a solid male threaded end, with a 37° machined male nose, mating with a 37° female flare seat. When connected, the mating surfaces are held together by the threads, but the threads do not form the seal. The female seat is created by flaring a tube end or machining the interior surface of a stem to 37°. A female JIC has a swivel nut, allowing the sealing surfaces to be joined together without twisting a hose or twisting the seats against each other (Fig. 3). JIC couplings are frequently used on low, medium, or high pressure hydraulic circuits on mining equipment and machinery. The SAE connection is similar in appearance and sealing characteristics to the JIC system, except the angle of the machined male nose and female flare seat is 45° (Fig. 4). "O" Ring Fittings Seals for "O" ring fittings are formed by compressing an "O" ring against an exposed machined surface on a mounting block or hydraulic component part. The effectiveness of modem spirals in the processing of fines from Brazilian coals is assessed and discussed. Coals representing the four major coalfields in Brazil have been cleaned in Reichert LD 9 spirals in pilot and industrial plants and performance results are here presented. Normalized distribution curves for all equipment and splitters are presented and were modeled using an empirical model. These data have been compared with those for shaking tables and water-only cyclones (WOC), and it has been observed that, in the size interval investigated, spirals have indeed superior accuracy than WOC and comparative performance to tables. By analyzing experimental as well as simulation results it could be observed that although limited by the poor liberation characteristics of most Brazilian coals, significant ash and sulfur removal could be achieved using spirals.

Cerro Vangaurdia Gold Mine is a joint venture between AngloGold (the operator), Perez Companc and Formicruz and is situated in the southern province of Santa Cruz, in Argentina, approximately 2,150 km south of the capital, Buenos Aires. The mine is located in a severe, semi-arid environment with very cold winters and little annual rainfall (200mm). It is an open-pit operation, mining several narrow, shallow epithermal quartz veins with . gold and silver mineralisation. Commissioning of the plant commenced in September 1998 and the first dore bar was poured towards the end of the same month. The nominal capacity of the plant is 55,000 tonnes per month, with a design capacity of 60,000 tonnes per month. Prior to finalising the design, an extensive testwork programme was undertaken at Nova Lima, in Brazil, in which all parts of the process were evaluated together on a pilot-plant scale. The process flowsheet selected at Ce1rn Vanguardia is quite novel, in that it includes milling in cyanide, as well as a cyanide recovery and recycling plant on the tailings section of the treatment plant is included. The cyanide recovery process selected was a version of the acidification - volatilization - reabsorption (AVR) process, known as Cyanisorb™. The selection of the Cyanisorb™ process in the plant design was as a direct consequence of two factors:

Groundwater inflows during construction pose one of the greatest risks to the successful completion of tunnel projects. Inflows can result in safety concerns, difficulty in mining and ground support, impact sensitive environmental habitats, create surface settlement and increase costs. Adequately planned pre-excavation grouting programs benefit both the Owner and Contractor in reducing risks and controlling project costs and potential schedule delays. This paper outlines strategic guidelines for assessment of site conditions for pre-excavation grouting hard rock tunnels. It also describes the design of pre-excavation grouting programs with respect to project requirements.

Incorporating a bottleneck analysis into the mine plan can provide a significantly better basis to make economic decisions regarding materials handling systems. Every materials handling system has a bottleneck. The bottleneck at a mine may change over time as a function of location or time. Since a mining reserve is a finite amount and can usually only be mined once, knowing how the bottleneck changes can provide a critical backdrop to capital investment decisions, especially those affecting the materials handling system. A bottleneck analysis can better quantify the expected 'return and also indicate the optimal time to complete tile project.

Conflicts are common in the mining industry. Engineers are accustomed to addressing issues such as land use, air and water pollution, and health and safety. Although conflicts of interest are important in the industry, they do not have the impact on organizational decision making that controversy does. Controversy is a type of conflict, probably the most important type, for effective decision making and competent problem solving. It exists when one person's ideas, information, preference, choices, conclusions, theories, opinions, or perspectives are incompatible with another's and the two seek to reach an agreement (Johnson and Johnson, 1979). Interpersonal and intergroup controversy is prevalent in the day-to-day functioning of organizations. If constructively managed, this type of controversy has important implications for effective decision making and problem solving. Too few organizational members accept controversy, and almost none attempt to stimulate it. This is because too few of them understand controversy well enough to accept and use it effectively. Most organizational personnel lack the interpersonal skills needed to stimulate controversy and manage it effectively. Discussion of conflicting ideas may not be common in problem solving situations due to the fear and anxiety most people feel in conflict situations. Traditionally, organizations suppressed conflict. They believed it was avoidable, caused by management errors. Optimal organizational performance required its removal. Conflict, though, is inevitable. And optimal organizational performance requires a moderate level of conflict. Management should manage the level of conflict and its resolution, for optimal performance. The current view stresses the importance of controversy for learning. Confronting a person with a different point of view stimulates that person to gather more information to elaborate, justify, or provide rationale for their position. Controversy: Process and Outcomes The decision making process begins with participants categorizing and organizing current information and experiences so that a conclusion is derived. When participants present their conclusions to another group and realize their conclusions are being challenged, a state of internal conceptual conflict or uncertainty ensues. This uncertainty motivates the challenged group to actively search for more information, experiences, and a more adequate cognitive perspective and reasoning process to resolve the uncertainty. Participants will adapt their cognitive perspective and reasoning through understanding the perspective and reasoning of others to derive a new or reorganized conclusion. This process may be repeated several times before a decision is reached. The active search for additional information on the alternatives is also promoted, along with greater mastery and retention of information and a more accurate understanding of opposing viewpoints (perspective taking). Of the many positive outcomes of the use of controversy, the effect on higher level cognitive reasoning and processing is especially important in engineering decision making. Research has been done on expert-novice difference in medical diagnoses, physics problem solving, and geological exploration. It shows that preparation for verbal interaction and the actual verbal interaction with peers with differing view-points promotes the development of expertise. Constructive Controversy Conditions Some controversies among decision makers concerning their preferred solutions to a problem can be beneficial. But sometimes they are not. As with all types of conflict, the potential for either constructive or destructive outcomes is present. Whether the consequences are positive or negative depends on the controversy and the way it is managed. The conditions and procedures of controversy management that determine the outcome include: the goal structure within which the controversy occurs; the degree of heterogeneity of decision makers; the amount of relevant information distributed among decision makers; the ability of decision makers to disagree with each other without creating defensiveness; and the perspectivetaking skills of the decision makers. Laboratory investigations on the possibility for magnetic separation of sulphide minerals are reported. A survey of several sulphide ores and flotation concentrates shows that magnetic separation in most cases is not a suitable primary method of beneficiation. However encouraging results have been obtained in concentrate purification. At the Boliden complex sulphide ore concentrator in Garpenberg a Allis-SALA MK III carousel High Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) is used together with a small flotation circuit to recover sphalerite lost to the galena concentrate in lead flotation. The result after four years of refining the HGMS process, show increasing zinc recovery and enhanced quality of the lead concentrate.

Promising placer gold exploration sites offshore Lunenburg County are drowned pre- and post-glacial river channels and auriferous glacial tills. Gold values up to 5.67 9/m3 have been encountered in the vicinity of the Ovens Peninsula offshore Lunenburg County. Moderate gold values associated with notable amounts of heavy minerals were reported from various other exploration sites in this area. This paper highlights the major geological and gemorphological features for placer gold depositions in southern Nova Scotia. The past to present gold exploration activities nearshore and offshore Lunenburg County are summarized and potential areas for placer gold identified.
