INTRODUCTION In the past, the cost and time required for the construction of shafts has played an important part in the planning of underground mines. For reasons that are discussed later, the economics and technology of shaft construction in the future can be expected to play an even greater role in the planning of new mines and the operation of existing mines. Indeed, the very feasibility of a proposed mining venture may depend on the cost and timing of the shaft requirements. The most commonly used shaft sinking methods used today for excavating vertical shafts are discussed and the need for new technology and methods emphasized. In one study by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, it was reported that the coal industry in the United States alone could require 170 to 190 new shafts per year on the basis of doubling current production by the mid 1980's or 70 to 90 shafts on a more moderate coal production expansion program. This study concluded that the attainment of the required number of shafts would be unlikely with the present shaft sinking resources and costs. In order to meet the requirements for shafts in the United States coal and metal mining industries, more efficient and speedier shaft construction methods will be necessary. Current shaft sinking methods are, in the main, labor intensive, and it is noteworthy that it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract the work force required to sink shafts conventionally. Tungsten-containing ores are mined on all continents of the world. China is the world's largest producer and controls the world's largest reserves. The USSR, itself a sizeable producer, is estimated to be the world's largest consumer. The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. INTRODUCTION Two promising innovative tunnel support systems are being developed by the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Illinois. One of these is a lining which can be placed by a slipform located immediately behind and contiguous with a tunneling machine. Recent advancements in construction materials appear to provide the breakthrough required to make such a system feasible and practical. The lining material which permits this construction scheme is wire fiber reinforced concrete made with high, very early strength regulated-set cement. Parts I and II of this paper relate to this slipformed liner. Part I discusses the material and equipment required to install the liner. The "Extruded Liner System" (ELS) has been devised to place the lining. This ELS concept is briefly described and a tentative development program is outlined. In Part II, the physical properties and practical construction aspects of the liner material are discussed and a program for structural testing of 10-ft diameter prototype tunnel supports is presented. Part III contains descriptions of improvements to conventional steel-rib tunnel supports. It is shown that square tubular box sections are structurally superior to wide flange sections for complex loading conditions often encountered in rock tunnels. Analytical studies and tests on connections have been performed to evaluate their structural behavior. These are presented along with a program for comparative large-scale tests on horseshoe-shaped frames with a 10-foot span. This research is being conducted by the Department of Civil

Heap leaching of ore with cyanide is a common and economical means of extracting precious metals (gold and silver) from mined ore. The use of cyanide, and the heap leach process, can seriously impact the environment. In the worst case, catastrophic failure of containment structures can release toxic levels of cyanide into receiving bodies of water, resulting in toxicity to ecological communities and contamination of public water supplies. Furthermore, cyanide degradation products such as nitrates can also impact local streams, lakes, and aquifers. Even if cyanide can be removed, the crushed residual ore may generate acid solutions that can release toxic heavy metals into the environment. Pintail Systems, Inc. (Pintail) of Aurora, CO, in conjunction with technology partners Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and Fairmile Gold Corporation (Fairmile), have developed a microbially-based precious metal lixiviant that can be used as an alternative to cyanide. The microbial process, called BioLix, is Pintail's second-generation biotechnology product for the recovery of precious metals from ore. The BioLix process is based on the enzymatic induction of organic lixiviant compounds using proprietary inducing agents and microorganisms. The process operates at near neutral pH and ambient temperatures using non-pathogenic microorganisms and food-grade chemicals. Precious metal extraction is also enhanced through the employment of microorganisms that facilitate mineral-solution reactions such as surfactant generation (improved wettability), and oxidation of gangue minerals that expose mineral surfaces to leaching. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the BioLix process, results from laboratory bench-scale experiments and a column study are presented. In addition, new applications for this enabling technology are discussed and include re-leaching of spent ore heaps, in situ leaching, and cyanide replacement for heap leaching.

Pattison Mine is a small sandstone mine located in Iowa. The sandstones produced by the mine are not common construction and aggregate materials. The stones are used to produce a special type of sand for hydraulic fracturing, a critical technique for recovering tight gas and shale gas. These sandstones are very different from the minerals and rocks which have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, they are brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle, up to 69°, and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, they are friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, a research program was set up by the mine and Missouri University of Science and Technology. This paper discusses the preliminary results of this investigation.

Froth flotation has been used to improve the recovery of fine coal, for minimizing the sulfur and ash content of clean coal and for the removal of fine coal from recycled or discharged backwater from coal preparation plants. Though froth flotation and allied processes for ores date from the turn of the century, with the first U.S. commercial application in 1911, coal flotation has been introduced into U.S. practice much more slowly. The first European coal flotation plant was started in 1920, and by 1933 Europe had 60 operating plants while the United States had only one plant, newly commissioned. Over the years there has been a steady increase in coal flotation so that today one-third of the 345 U.S. plants employ the process. This report traces U.S. coal flotation practice and technological improvements from early laboratory experiments in 1915 up to today's extensive use of the process.

Pardon my audacity, but I feel that this is the solution, not just a solution. Further, I will be so bold as to maintain that this is the last-ditch, eleventh-hour chance for the mineral industry to solve its critical technical manpower shortage. I am not being facetious. I am convinced that there is only one solution--just as there is but one real cause of the problem. My conclusion 'is reinforced by countless talks of endless hours with people both in and out of the industry, with employers and employees, and with educators and students. While I claim no originality for the idea and have no pride of authorship, I am concerned that the industry hear and heed in time. It is quite unlikely that the mineral industry and the mineral engineering profession will willingly subscribe to my thesis or gladly buy my proposal. I am convinced, however, that it is the only course of action open to us, and the only course of action which will succeed.

Several refractory sulfide and carbonaceous gold ores were examined to determine whether microbial pretreatment could be used to enhance gold recovery. Test samples were biologically leached using unique, thermophilic microorganisms to solubilize iron sulfide minerals. Gold recovery from sulfide ores and concentrates was enhanced following pretreatment with the thermophiles; responses varied widely for the individual materials. Although bioleaching had little effect on the preg robbing characteristics of the carbonaceous gold ores, cyanidation of the bioleached residues yielded higher gold recoveries than cyanidation of the native ore. By combining bioleaching with abiotic processes designed to inhibit preg robbing, gold recoveries of 83-98% were obtained from carbonaceous ores yielding 10-50% gold recovery by direct cyanidation.

The paper describes prediction, control and validation of face pressures, and special TBM features for the bored tunnels of the New Metro Rail City Project, Perth, Australia. The selected EPB-TBM passed below a heritage bridge and the operational Perth Railway station in ground conditions consisting of fully saturated uniform sand combined with shallow overburden and a horizontal alignment radius of only 135m. Therefore, strict control of volume loss, TBM operations and ground movements was vital requiring continuous evaluation and adjustments to TBM operation parameters. The paper discusses the effectiveness of applied TBM face pressures and the used foam/polymer soil conditioning which was measured against achieved volume loss and the predicted range of ground settlements.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). This paper presents the results from an extensive research program on the vacuum filtration of iron ore slurries. Experiments were conducted with the addition of several types of flocculants and surfactants. The filtration response of the slurries was studied in terms of the cake formation rate and the residual cake moisture. As the flaws in the population balance model (PBM) comminution model are examined more deeply, further errors and problems were discovered. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalization assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions.

The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

In the past two years recent increases in silver prices over levels that prevailed for many years have changed supply/demand patterns. On the supply side, a silver mining boom is in progress in the United States and elsewhere. On the demand side, traditional uses of silver by individuals are dropping while industry is conserving. These changes will alter the supply/demand balance and bring about more moderate rises in silver prices, which in turn will impact the mining industry.

Any type of agitation within a confined vessel is primarily concerned with two parameters: 1) A level of agitation describing the homogeneity of the constituents (whether it be suspension or mixing) and, 2) the energy efficiency with which this level of agitation is accomplished. The following is an attempt to present a solution to the problem of adequately defining and optimizing these properties. First included is a discussion of the application of good design practices to the determination of a mechanically efficient shape to the blade elements of the propeller. These practices, excluding several appropriate modifications, have been known, but not well understood, in aircraft fluid mechanics for a number of years. Secondly, having optimized the direct impartation of energy to the medium being agitated, attention is turned to one of the more perplexing phenomena of multi-phase systems - definition and prediction of agitation levels. The result of recent study and testing is a method of scaling which the authors feel provides a lucid understanding of governing physical parameters within the agitator itself, allowing one to scale up and down with confidence.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.
