This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

Processing of the refractory precious metal ore from the Sunshine Mine is done in a fully integrated hydrometallurgical facility. This operating philosophy began with the construction of an antimony plant during World War 11, and it continued with the construction of a silver-copper refinery in 1984. The antimony plant relies on an alkaline sulfide ambient pressure leach combined with antimony electrowinning and antimony compound production. This plant is the largest producer of antimony metal in the United States. The one-of-a-kind silver- copper refinery uses a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach system. The plant contains innovative downstream silver recovery processes as well as copper solvent extraction and electrowinning. This paper presents the pertinent process chemistries and flow sheets for the two unique hydrometallurgical processing plants.

Fundamental to the use of rotary bit drilling equipment for oil and gas drilling is the requirement to maintain a cooling and lubricating environment for the bit and a means of conveying the cuttings from the drilling operation to the surface. The vast majority of such functions are provided for by the use of water based drilling fluids, commonly known as the drilling mud. One of the basic constituents of drilling mud is bentonite, a montmorillonite clay. Bentonite, when mixed with water at approximately 6% solids, will produce a fluid which has several important features in connection with its role as a drilling mud:

Six types of amines were evaluated in the cleaning step of the rougher concentrate for the Crago “Double Float” process in terms of relative selectivity. Selectivity of these amines was ranked based on both batch and locked cycle flotation tests. Two parameters were used for selectivity ranking, the Selectivity Index, SI, and the ratio of insol rejection to the tailings weight percentage, R*. The comparison of the flotation results of the batch tests of the cleaning step of the Crago process for an unsized amine feed generated the following ranking from the most selective to the least selective mine: Quaternary > Primary [ ]Tertiary [ ] Condensate > Ether > Secondary(?).

The paper describes the exploration and development activity associated with a series of open pit gold deposits in the Laverton region of Western Australia with an aggregate resource base of 4 million tonnes at a grade of about 3 grammes per tonne. In September 1988, Hill Minerals N.L., now a wholly owned subsidiary of Ashton Mining Limited, completed the purchase of the Cork Tree Well treatment plant from Austwhim. This CIP plant had a rated capacity of 235,000 tonnes per annum, and is located within the Hill Minerals Laverton Project area. Ore is trucked by haulage contractors from each open pit mine to the central treatment plant at Cork Tree Well. Studies were completed and a plant expansion undertaken lifting throughput to 500,000 tonnes per annum. A contract was let for this expansion in November 1988, and construction completed in April 1989. Concurrent with the above project development work, heap leach metallurgical studies are being undertaken on low grade mineralisation associated with higher grade ore zones at several of the open pit mines, notably King of Creation and Craiggiemore. It is anticipated that heap leaching will provide a useful adjunct to gold production from milling higher grade ores.

The modern era of mineral exploration in Panama began in the late 1960's, resulting in porphyry copper discoveries at Petaquilla, Rio Pito, and Cerro Colorado. In contrast, Panama's early mining history (1503 to the early 1700's) was associated with gold. A single mine, Cana, in Darien Province, produced more than one Million ounces of gold in the colonial period. Except for episodic exploration activity by British and French interests, Panama's gold potential since the 1700's has been largely ignored.

I consider it a distinct privilege to be afforded the opportunity of discussing the program of the Office of Coal Research. The principal activities I will be discussing are concerned with projects that fall in the utilization area. I will, to be sure, touch on other activities of the Office of Coal Research but am not equipped to discuss these activities in great detail. Research activities of the Office of Coal Research are conducted on a contract basis with commercial, academic, and non-profit institutions. We do not operate any laboratories of our own but we do maintain a very small staff for technical and administrative supervision of our contractors. We have consistently attempted to interest outstanding, creative, and practical research organizations in our program. We are constantly seeking the imaginative new idea that will materially reduce the cost of mining coal, transporting it, or will process it into a more convenient and useable form. In assessing proposals and in developing our program, we search for the improvements that will develop large-scale new uses for coal or coal products or those that support these new uses.

This paper presents recent developments in the use of a CFD model for representing the flow of gases in the goaf of retreat faces. In France, it is of highest importance to optimize firedamp drainage in very gassy mines and nitrogen injection in faces prone to spontaneous combustion. Numerical modeling has been used to solve this problem. So the model developed has been first calibrated using a large quantity of field data and could then be used for various simulations. Though still in progress, this research has given promising results, many of them being already set into practice.

A novel solvent-extraction route for the production of high­purity gold has been successfully demonstrated on a pilot-plant scale, and the first full-scale production plant is being commissioned. This plant, at Harmony Gold Mine in South Africa, is designed to refine 24 tons of gold per annum when operated for one shift per day. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold­refining technology, but may also be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. The Minataur™ Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is able to produce gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the feed material, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and then precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper introduces the process, presents selected results of pilot-plant trials in which high-purity gold was produced from two significantly different feed materials, and illustrates some of the applicable cost benefits.

INTRODUCTION Several recent technological improvements - largely by the convey-or industry - have increased the importance of inclined shaft construction for developing mines where ore deposits are relatively shallow. With these newer systems, long conveyor haulages are economically feasible, allowing mine owners to justify the expense of the inclined shaft or slope. What this actually means is that they can now take advantage of the versatility this construction offers. For example, haulage capacity can be changed by conveyor additions or replacements; equipment can be trammed to and from the surface quickly without costly breakdown and re-assembly; and a walkway is available for workers in the event of an emergency. Now, another innovation may accelerate this type of construction, the use of tunnel boring machines or "Mechanical Moles" to dig the slopes. While conventional. drill and blast methods have been used previously to build inclined shafts, the tunnel boring machine technique offers greater production rates, higher safety and a better, much cleaner bore. McGuire Shaft & Tunnel Corporation of Ft. Smith, Arkansas recently started such a slope project - the first ever bid by a contractor based on the use of a "Mechanical Mole".

Over the past decade, numerous factors have led US copper firms to face increasingly severe competition from low cost foreign producers. As a result, greater attention is being devoted to developing and implementing new technology that can reduce costs and maintain the competitive position of domestic firms while simultaneously meeting environmental requirements. To obtain a better understanding of the likelihood of the development, adoption, and use of innovative copper technologies in the future, the Bureau of Mines contracted with Mineral Systems Inc. of Stamford, CT, to undertake a systematic survey of technological experts in industry, government, and the academic community. According to the survey, major developments in exploration over the next 25 years are likely to be in technologies that facilitate analysis and interpretation of deposit data rather than those that enable the collection of additional data. Most new copper mining and beneficiation technologies are likely to represent evolutionary extensions of existing systems with a notable increase expected in the application of information systems technologies and computer control methods. A possible movement towards increased usage of continuous mining systems in copper was also noted. Experts indicated that several copper smelters are under consideration for extensive renovation and, as a result, flash smelting technology is expected to become much more widely used in the US. A gradual movement toward continuous smelting methods was also forecast. In copper refining, the major technological change expected is the gradual automation of various refinery operations. Finally, though increased usage is expected, in situ solution mining and hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores are not expected to become widespread over the forecast time horizon. This first article in a two-part series describes the survey method chosen and the technological innovations selected for eval¬uation. Also discussed are the assessment panels, background scenarios, critical events, and diffusion forecasts. Next month, part two will address technology forecasts resulting from the study. Featured are discussions on future copper exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, and recycling. A cost/benefit analysis will also be included. Methodology Selection of Assessment Method To develop a consensus forecast of technological change in the copper industry, a technique for systematically polling subjective opinions of experts was required. After conducting a literature survey and some preliminary testing, the direct probability assessment method was selected. With this assessment method experts are asked to express in quantitative terms their judgment of the probability that a specified event will occur, usually over a series of time frames. The method was chosen because the experts were observed to be more comfortable with this approach during the testing period, and the results of this process effectively satisfied the assessment objective. The experts generally could provide more precise estimates of the timing of future events using this technique because it was the least cumbersome of the assessment methods tested. Identification, Selection, and Description of the Technologies The initial list (Table 1) of innovative copper technologies assessed in the study was developed from two principal sources: knowledge and expertise of the study team and a review of relevant technical literature. From this list of 47 potential technologies, 10 were selected for detailed assessment. Table 2 lists 35 technologies that were subsequently identified in the first series of assessments. Twelve technologies from this list were also selected for detailed evaluation in a second assessment round. In this paper, the methodologies that should be applied by the progressive mining industry in order to fall within the frame of the sustainable development are summarized. Potash was first discovered in Saskatchewan in 1943 but its continuous extraction did not begin until 1962. In the years since then, potash has played an important role in the economic and political life of the province. And, as is well-known, the most eventful time in the life of the industry occurred in 1975 when the Government of Saskatchewan decided to become a major participant in potash production. To understand that decision, however, requires an understanding of the economic development of Saskatchewan and of relations between the industry and the government prior to 1975. This year, Saskatchewan celebrates its 75th year as a province. For most of those years, we have been an agrarian economy and society, dependent on exports of cereal grains, mostly wheat, for a livelihood. Even today, agriculture accounts for about 25% of the province's Gross Domestic Product (Economic Review, 1979, p. 7) and difficulties in agriculture spread rapidly to the rest of the provincial economy. The difficulties and risks that go hand in hand with being a "one crop" economy were known as long ago as 1920 but were not fully appreciated until the combination of depression and drought in the 1930's turned the prairie grain- belt into a dustbowl. Some idea of the severity of the depression is revealed by the following data: in 1928, Saskatchewan produced 321 million bushels of wheat. By 1931, the total fell to 132 million bushels and, in 1937, to a mere 37 million bushels. The value of agricultural products sold off farms fell from $273,000,000 in 1928 to a meagre $51,000,000 in 1937. The impact of such a fall of agricultural incomes was catastrophic since about 70% of the population of some 921,000 persons lived in rural, agriculture-dependent areas (Britnel.1, 1939, p. 14).

Cortez Gold Mines is completing a Feasibility Study for a new open pit gold mine in north central NV. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing open pit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled, and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

The permit generation and review process represents both a time consuming and expensive task for industry and government alike. Changes in regulations and in review procedures cause additional delays. This leads to potentially higher costs of doing business and the extension of time for a project to lie started. This paper describes the motivation and methodology of applying an expert system to function in the role of a permit reviewer. The problems of representing the knowledge of the reviewer and regulatory criteria are illustrated. Futhermore, the selection method for the expert system shell is addressed. Finally, a sample review is demonstrated to show the results of applying this artificial intelligence method to the process of permit review.

The leaching of gold in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants in an autoclave has been investigated. Also studied are thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the ammonia leaching of gold and silver. The variables studied included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of ammonia, ammonium, and various anions. Arrhenius activation energy values were found to be between 47.1 kJ/mol and 86.2 kJ/mol depending upon the kinds of oxidants used. An electrochemical reaction controlling mechanism has been proposed for the dissolution reaction. The leaching behavior of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants has also been investigated. The samples tested included sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were better than 96% within 2-3 hours of leaching time.

Commercialisation of outcomes from research projects is a process often poorly understood and managed, but has the potential to achieve significant benefits for the industry and community as a whole. JKTech Pty Ltd was established in 1986 to transfer viable research outcomes from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) at The University of Queensland, Australia. This paper describes successful and unsuccessful examples of commercialisation by JKTech over the years, and draws some conclusions as to the factors that contribute to success and failure in technology transfer.

In the past three years there has been a great amount of attention given to phosphates world wide, and in particular to the Florida Phosphate Industry. I would like to relate some of the most recent history of the industry and give you a personal outlook for the future. Phosphate rock has been produced in Florida since its discovery on the Peace River in the 1880's. Through 1976, approximately 720 million ST of rock had been mined from Florida reserves, and it is my opinion that there are at least 1.2 billion tons remaining which are consolidated, accessible and can reasonably be expected to be permitted for mining. Over half the 1.2 billion tons will be deeper, more scattered, leaner and will produce lower grade rock than the Bone Valley of Central Florida has tradition-ally produced. In 1973, '74, '75 and '76 the Florida Phosphate Industry produced 32.6, 34.0, 38.2 and (38.0) (P) million ST of phosphate rock respectively. This rock was produced by ten mining companies, Agrico, Borden, Brewster Phosphates, Gardinier, Grace, IMC, Mobil, Occidental, Swift, and USS Agri-Chem; mines are located -17 in Polk County, one in Hillsborough County and two in Hamilton County, Florida. Phosphate rock is used by local companies in Florida primarily to produce phosphoric acid from which DAP and TSP is manufactured. Florida acid producers use about 15 million STPY in acid plants in Florida, and another 7.5 million STPY is consumed by acid producers in plants on and near the Mississippi River. Somewhat
