The U.S. iron ore industry is located primarily in Northern Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula with one additional small plant in Missouri. There are currently some 10 plants operating that produce about 48 million tons per year of pellets. The major reagent use occurs in the three general areas of: flocculation, flotation and pellet additives. Minor areas of usage are for corrosion inhibition and dust suppression. Current practice as to types of reagents, consumption, and method of application are reviewed. The interaction of reagents with other parts of the process are discussed. Also included is a discussion of future reagent needs.

When systematically compared to other engineering fields, mining engineering is distinctive in 1) having a total systems concern. 2) dealing with encumbered space and 3) requiring full spectrum practice. The total systems concern results from having to design and then co-ordinate in space and time several major systems: excavating and bulk handling, ground control, life support and normal support. This requirement favors a generalist rather than a specialist approach. In coping with encumbered space especially in underground coal mining, the uncertainties of geologic conditions are compounded by tightness, roughness, remoteness and hazards. Into this difficult setting the total systems * complex is "stuffed," adding congestion and interference. Because of significant ground deterioration a flexible "rapid in-out" approach is usually vital to mining. Full spectrum practice arises from the need to manage, as well as to plan and design, a labor intensive operation. Since market conditions can also fluctuate most aspects of administration are needed in many respects, mining engineering functions relative to civil engineering in a way similar to industrial to mechanical engineering, with encumbered space being crucial. On this basis stress is placed on: 1) personal relations, 2) field work and 3) entrepreneurship, viewing time as money. Specific recommendations for improving engineering, safety and management and leadership are made. Since most new deposits are marginal, by applying these recommendations with high technology they could possibly now be mined on a widespread basis.

Grouting is a useful engineering tool for tunnels throughout the world. A wide variety of methods and materials are used, reflecting the broad range of geological, hydrogeological, and structural demands. Most tunnel grouting is conducted with cement, which produces acceptable results in appropriate conditions. However, there are cases where such grouts are not practical, but polyurethane grouts can be extremely useful. Regretfully, these grouts are frequently poorly understood, leading to improper application and therefore poor results. This paper provides a fundamental overview of their application, both used individually and in combination with cement. Case histories from Scandinavian practice are cited.

Microcystaline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. Production of this silica, consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries but also sought after for many filler/extender uses, has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey and a very complete report was issued in 1953 (Report of Investigations No. 166), authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the silica ore has changed very little since the first reported production in 1906, although emphasis has been placed on the production of the finer sized grades to meet newer market requirements. Industrial Mineral Notes 40, published by the Illinois State Geological Survey in June 1970, describes a method by which a less than 1-micron fraction could be commercially produced from the readily available finest commercial grade presently being marketed (99% minus 10 microns). The finer grades exhibit to a lesser degree the reinforcement, high flatting efficiency, thickening and dry brightness properties associated with the synthetically produced silicas. It is expected that the extremely fine grades of microcrystaline silica will become accepted in the markets that now use a combination of precipitated silica and less expensive extender/filler minerals such as kaolin or calcium carbonate.

The Witwatersrand reefs provide excellent examples of chemical and structural control on gold distribution. All mined gold appears to coma from a carbon -gold association and/or Fe-S-Au association, and also from immediately above or below unconformity surfaces. A total raliance on the current syngenetic model for Witwatersrand gold does not appear to be justified from the accumulated data and may be responsible for missed opportunities during exploration: consideration of other models is suggested especially where they better fit the data. The stratabound natura of Witwatersrand gold 1& critical to mining, but is emphasized in syngenetic models to the virtual exclusion of many other important observations. By analogy with other deposit types, stratabound character is probably a poor guide to genesis.

The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) is currently constructing the largest water treatment plant in Canada. As part of this treatment scheme twin water transfer tunnels are being constructed. Work commenced with the 11 m diameter, 185 m deep Seymour Shaft which was excavated by drill and blast using a mobile crane for hoisting. The Seymour Shaft is the first large diameter shaft that has been sunk in Western Canada in recent years. The operational aspects associated with the hoisting, the drill-blast-support cycle and water control in the shaft are the focus of this paper.

It was just a little over three years ago that the "Go" button was pushed to start operations on the blending piles at Oro Grande. As is usual with any new installation, there were problems that had to be solved. This paper will concern itself with those problems directly related to quality control. To obtain a consistent outgoing quality level at the most economical level for a finished product requires two main points: 1. Measurement of variations in the process, 2. A method of making a predictable change to adjust for variations. The manufacture of cement requires a relatively high degree of accuracy if a consistent outgoing quality level is to be maintained. The blending piles were our solution to this problem.

Continuing analysis of environmental samples for asbestos content has resulted in the misidentification of non-asbestos amphibole particles as asbestos fibers. These errors have received wide publicity (such as in the asbestos-in-crayon story) and have caused unnecessary reformulation of products. The primary cause of these errors has been a poor understanding of mineralogy and analytical techniques among the many asbestos laboratories that arose following the passage of the AHERA regulations. Presented here is a procedure based on published data that can be used to correctly classify an elongated particle as asbestos or as non-asbestos.

There are three definite steps in the making of a mining industry in any country. These are as follows: Step A - Geological Mapping This step covers the basic geological mapping of the country at scales of 1/250, 000 up to l/50, 000. This step eliminates territory and directs the exploration teams to the areas of potential interest. Step B Prospecting This step includes all phases from detailed geology through geophysics and drilling up to the point of proving that an economic ore body exists. Step C - Mine Development This is the expensive step, involving the creation of the mine, including shaft-sinking, ore treatment plant, etc.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a multi-purpose urban public works project with a total cost of $3.7 billion. Currently 51 miles of TARP tunnels are completed and operational and 34 miles are under construction. The excavated TARP tunnels have been constructed in rock utilizing 29 tunnel boring machines, ranging in size from 6.5 to 35.3 feet in diameter.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system for dewatering waste slurries by flocculating mineral particles with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting flocs on static and/or rotary screens. This paper discusses data obtained from dewatering, rheology, and ion-exchange experiments. A possible mechanism is postulated for the attachment of PEO to claylike particles through a water bridge with the intershell waters of the exchanged ion and the polymer.

Introduction Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydrologic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with groundwater following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. The prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with groundwater is a critical aspect of assessing the long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical groundwater flow modeling provides a method for predicting the groundwater refilling rate of the pit. The rate at which pit "lakes" fill depends on several factors: •the rate and duration of pit dewatering; •the depth and size of the ultimate pit and •the pre-mining hydrologic regime. These factors can be incorporated into a detailed numerical groundwater flow model that can then be used to assess the effects of dewatering and post-mining recovery on the local and regional hydrologic systems. A sufficiently detailed, numerical groundwater model provides the oportunity to: •account for complex geology near the pit; •assess the impact of active pit dewatering and •predict the long-term impacts of post-mining groundwater flow into the pit. A detailed groundwater model incorporating these items has been developed and applied at an operating open-pit mine. Developed by Durbin and O'Brien (1987), the three-dimensional, finite-element, groundwater flow model was used to represent the hydrologic system of an approximately 253-km2 (98-sq mile) area surrounding the pit. Historical groundwater elevation data, stream flows and meteorologic, geologic and geophysical data were used to establish the dimensions and initial conditions for the model. Steady-state conditions, representing the pre-mining local and regional hydrologic systems, were simulated using the initial conditions incorporated into the groundwater model. The groundwater model was then utilized to simulate various dewatering programs, to predict the filling rate and the groundwater depth in the ultimate pit once mining activities are complete and to assess the long-term impacts on the regional groundwater flow system. Development of pit lake model Groundwater modeling efforts were completed in two phases. The first focused on pit dewatering activities, while the second phase concentrated on the post-mining effects on the hydrologic system. The final estimates of groundwater elevations calculated during the pit dewatering simulations were used in predicting the post-mining recovery of the hydrologic system. The groundwater model was also modified prior to the second phase to account for the volume of rock removed during mining activities. To account for the actual volume of rock mined, the geometry of the post-dewatering model grid was modified to approximate the final pit geometry. The depth and width of the ultimate pit were divided into eight idealized stages that represented significant changes in the bench geometries. These eight stages were then introduced sequentially into the model according to the predicted water elevations within the pit. In this way, changes in the volume and depth of water within the pit were accounted for through time. Once the ultimate pit geometry was accounted for in the model, it was necessary to assign new hydraulic characteristics to those parts of the model grid (elements) that represented excavated rock. The solution of the numerical model requires that finite hydraulic conductivity values be assigned to the portion of the groundwater model that represents excavated rock. Therefore, the calculated groundwater elevations differ, somewhat, between the edges and the center of the open pit. These model-calculated water elevations at the edge and in the middle of the open pit represent the elevation of water that would occur in the pit lake. To minimize the error in the estimated level of water within the pit lake, the hydraulic conductivity was increased to a value that would: •minimize the predicted difference between the groundwater elevations across the open pit and •produce a numerically stable solution. Specific storage is the hydrologic parameter that accounts for the water produced by compaction of the aquifer matrix. To predict the groundwater volume that would flow into the ultimate pit, this parameter was assigned a value equivalent to the compressibility of water. This value of specific storage reflects the post-mining groundwater storage occurring as an open body of water. The grinding mill is probably the most common unit operation used in mineral processing. There is, however, much which can still be done in the way of optimization. This paper discusses the results of a well controlled pilot scale test in which the performance of a tumbling mill with a conventional rubber lining equipped with lifter bars is compared to that with a smooth rubber lining of the magnetic type. The results indicate that the smooth lining is about 14 percent more effective with respect to energy consumption. By optimizing the size of the grinding media, the mill capacity can be increased in many grinding operations. In this specific case the -20 mm ball charge required 26 percent less grinding energy than one with a -30 mm ball charge. The energy savings can. in most cases, be converted to increased capacity. The wear of the grinding media is difficult to assess over a short period test but the results suggest it is somewhat less when a smooth lining is used. The wear of the linings has not been included in this study but it is generally accepted that the use of the magnetic lining reduces the lining costs dramatically. Computer simulation using the Millsoft code, developed by Mishra e.a. confirms and explains the increased effectiveness of comminution when smooth lining and smaller grinding balls are used.

Underground mining at Kanowna Belle commenced in July 1998, using a sublevel open stoping method. The use of this stoping method necessitated the use of a cemented fill material for filling primary and secondary stope voids. A detailed engineering study recommended the construction of a cemented aggregate fill (CAF) system for Block A, in favour of paste fill. The CAF system consisted of a crushing and screening plant, a surface binder preparation plant and an underground fill station. Conventional underground dump trucks were used for CAF delivery. Since CAF plant commissioning in March 1999, 1.2 million tonnes of CAF have been placed underground. CAF segregation was the most significant quality control issue during CAF system operation. At the hangingwalls of filled stopes, CAF segregation sometimes occurred to such the extent that the resulting fill material was essentially uncemented coarse aggregate. This caused some CAF dilution during the extraction of adjacent secondary stopes. Numerous CAF were prepared on site for strength testing. A relationship has been formulated that allows estimation of the CAF uniaxial compressive strength in MPa, based on the cement content (c) and porosity (n), as follows. [ ] Practice at Kanowna Belle has confirmed that laboratory testing results cannot be applied for optimising the mix design of cemented rock fills that do not exhibit debris flow behaviour during placement. The grain flow characteristics and consequent marked segregation dominate the in situ fill strength. A detailed review of backfill requirements for the lower mine indicated that the total net present cost of CAF and paste systems was similar. Several significant operational advantages offered by a paste system have resulted in its selection for the remaining mine life. The construction of a paste fill system at Kanowna Belle is currently in progress.

A large portion of the public lands in the United States is managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Public lands administered by the BLM comprise about 39 per cent (270 million acres) of the entire Federal surface estate or about 1/8 of the surface of the United States. Most of this land, located in the 11 Western States, including Alaska, is available for mineral exploration and development. The BLM is a multiple-use land management agency responsible for the balanced management of the public lands and their resources. The BLM's task is to ensure the balanced and sustainable development of the public lands and resources. This task translates into the management of people and their use of the public resources. As a result, the BLM manages a diverse group of programs including recreation, range lands, timber lands, fish and wildlife habitat, watershed, wilderness, scientific, cultural, and historic properties, and most importantly for this paper, energy and mineral resources. The BLM has developed several new policies with respect to mining, including policies on inspection and enforcement, financial guarantees for reclamation, and the use of cyanide. The goal of these policies is to demonstrate to the American public that mineral exploration and development can be an integral part of sustainable development on public lands in an environmentally sound manner.

Effective control of balling line circuits is a problem taconite companies have been dealing with for over thirty years. The sensitivity of balling circuits to changes in moisture, bentonite, concentrate particle size, and other operating parameters are the main reasons for control problems. This paper presents test results and describes the integration of existing instrumentation with a digital image analysis system on a balling circuit. This work has the goal of developing control strategies to automatically adjust water spray and bentonite addition, to optimize the size distribution on the roll screen and reduce the variability in control between balling attendants, resulting in more consistent greenball product quality.

Traditionally, when one considers the optimization of a flotation circuit, the scope of work focuses on a review of unit process equipment. This usually includes topics such as grinding ball typed, grind size, classifier efficiency, mill liner design, chemical reagent addition rates, alternative chemical reagents, on-line process analysis, and automated control strategy. However, since very few companies can afford the capital expenditure needed to completely automate the processes, the flotation operator remains as a critical link in optimization of the circuit. Therefore, upgrading of operator skills and knowledge through training must be considered as equally as important as unit process review. This paper will review some concepts and approaches to innovative operator training. INTRODUCTION Consider for a moment the fantastic changes that have occurred in process automation at many flotation plants during the last several years. Flowmeters, density gages, and on-stream analyzers now routinely measure process conditions and effect control strategy. These functions had until recently been entrusted to human flotation operators. Now with a little stretching of the imagination it is possible to envision a plant where very little human intervention would be required. However, when one begins to calculate the capital cost required to fully install automatic equipment, it quickly becomes apparent that many parts of flotation plants will continue to require skilled, knowledgeable operators to ensure successful operation. Additionally as these automatic systems are put into place, the operator's duties become increasingly complex. Therefore no flotation plant can be considered optimized without upgrading each operator's skill and knowledge to match the technology utilized. BACKGROUND At Henderson, one of the hardest steps towards the optimization of operators was to realize that present level of operator skill and knowledge was not sufficient. Since Henderson had a track record of producing the highest quality molybdenum concentrate in the world, it was difficult to accept the idea that change was needed, or even possible. This realization came about as Henderson began a program to modernize the cleaner plant circuit. Henderson utilizes a complex cleaner flotation circuit involving multiple stages of flotation, with a counter- current routing of flotation tailings. Since start-up in 1976 Henderson had relied upon next-day laboratory analysis techniques, that provided an after the fact measurement of process. Hour to hour process control was implemented by the operator, the basis for the operators' control decisions was primarily the individual operator's experience and "feel'. Bench marking of current flotation technology indicated that on-stream analysis was a proven state-of-the-art method for improving process control. An Outokumpu Courier 30 analyzer was purchased and installed to provide real-time analysis of critical cleaner plant flows. The analyzer quickly began to provide valuable assay information, allowing the metallurgists to develop specific target values for important flotation variables. However due to the complexity of the circuit, the analyzer information showed that a problem was usually caused when several targeted parameters went out of range simultaneously. This made it difficult for the operator to determine just where to implement the proper corrective action. It became apparent that to take full advantage of the new analyzer information each operator would have to become proficient at understanding the material balance of the entire circuit. TRAINING PLAN CONCEPTS With the goal of giving each operator a working knowledge of a circuit material balance the following concepts were applied to develop a training plan: - Most operators were high school graduates, but had fairly weak mathematical skills, and had very little experience at metallurgical calculations. - The training would have to address a wide range of topics from basic fundamentals to complex material balance. The basic sequence decided upon, was to present a fundamental topic to the entire group, break into small groups to work a “hands on'”case study example of that topic, and design the case study results so that they could be combined to highlight a major portion of the material balance concept.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology's photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.
