Accurate knowledge of the gas content of coal seams has always been important, according to the work of W. P. Diamond and J. R. Levine, 1981, but is becoming increasingly important for several reasons: Excessive gas emissions in the mine can create explosion hazards. Depletion of shallower coal reserves is forcing underground operations to greater depths where coal gas content is often greater. Natural gas prices and the need for new energy sources make naturally occurring coal gas a potential resource of economic interest. Information on coal gas content will impact mine designs, mine ventilation system specifications, and the effectiveness of methane control procedures used. Accurate resource assessment is needed for projecting and designing potential gas utilization enterprises. The emphasis upon methane hazards in mining operations, and upon potential methane utilization, has led us to improve upon the procedures used to determine coalbed methane levels.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. "GENERAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The £300 million Bond Street Station Upgrade project will provide essential congestion relief and step-free access to an important interchange and destination station in the heart of the London Underground network. In 2010 London Underground (LU) let a design & build contract to Costain Laing O’Rourke (CoLOR), with the works to be completed in early 2017. CoLOR’s lead designer is Halcrow-Atkins JV (HAT). The station upgrade works comprise the following principal elements: •,A new satellite ticket hall on the North side of Oxford Street •,Two additional escalators and stairs providing congestion relief to the Jubilee line platforms •,Four lift shafts to provide step-free access between the different levels of the station •,Additional stairs to Central line platform level •,Tunnelled connection to the Crossrail station immediately to the south •,Connecting passageways, including ten connections to existing station tunnels. To achieve this, an existing property at 354-358 Oxford Street has been purchased and demolished, and the basement deepened to make provision for the new ticket hall. From this basement two circular shafts have been sunk, providing construction access for the tunnelled passages and lift and escalator shafts. The tunneling is principally in the London Clay stratum, which is widely recognized as a favorable tunneling medium, although the deepest parts of the works extend into the Lambeth Group strata which consist principally of stiff clays at this level but also contain water-bearing sands. The majority of tunneling has been carried out using mechanical excavation and sprayed concrete linings but other techniques have been used in areas where SCL is not practicable.A key challenge for design and construction of the works has been spatial constraint, in particular due to: •,The existing underground station layout •,The Limits of Deviation for the works •,The small construction site at 354-358 Oxford Street •,Overlaying Third Party assets including Listed buildings, sewers and water mains."

This paper does not deal with the typical start-up issues of equipment, production capacity or work force. This is a description of the challenges faced and the changes made by the project team to bring to fruition the reconstruction of Port Inland. Many honored traditions and norms had to be overturned to find the winning combination that provided the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. This paper covers the innovation in terms of machinery, operations, and management philosophy that permitted the renovation and reopening of Port Inland as a commercial limestone producer in the spring of 1992. Port Inland, constructed by Inland Steel in 1930, operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan, the operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 500,000 tons of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped via lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical Dolomite and Limestone are produced on site. In 1930, Port Inland was at the fore front of technological advancement. It was the first major mining operation to use roller bearings and other equipment innovations. Over the 60 years of operation, Inland Steel placed emphasis on steel making technology and iron ore mining at the detriment of the limestone operation. By the early 80's, Port Inland was no longer a leading competitor. Inland Steel, unable or unwilling to spend the capital to modernize, closed the facility in the fall of 1989.

The requirements of today's and tomorrow's markets led to a new generation of facilities which handles large tonnages annually, loading them into larger vessels, at higher rates, efficiently and reliably, with minimum labor input, and significantly greater attention to the environment. A great variety of products are handled, including various grades of metallurgical and steaming coal, coke, iron ore in its many forms, shapes and moisture content, phosphates and fertilizer products, bauxite and alumina ores, limestone, sugar and grains, cement and many other products. When we examine the annual tonnages involved in these movements the economic value of handling these products on a bulk basis can be readily seen. Although nearly all these products have been handled by continuous bulk conveyors for many years, recent governmental response to environmental concerns require a re-evaluation of previous procedures. Most air pollution and emission control regulations and ordinances have recognized several specific sources of pollution. Detailed regulations and requirements have been developed concerning smoke emissions, emissions of visible air contaminants and particulate matter from power plants, heating plants, refuse burning equipment, coke ovens, steel furnaces, kilns, and other industrial installations. Although fugitive dust is also an environmental pollutant it is governed by regulations that are more general and therefore, more difficult to apply. A general definition of a "fugitive particle" is any matter which escapes or becomes airborne from an operation or which is emitted into the atmosphere without passing or being conducted through a flue, pipe, stack or other structure designed for the purpose of emitting air pollutants into the atmosphere. This paper deals with the aspects of fugitive dust emissions as they apply to shiploading. Fugitive dust emissions control is important not only because of environmental regulations but also to prevent the loss of valuable product, reduce housekeeping, and reduce breakdown and maintenance problems to land and vessel equipment. As of the end of October, 1990, there have been eight spontaneous combustion heatings reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at the No. 5 Mine. A reportable heating is defined as one with elevated surface temperatures of the strata greater than ll°C (20°F) above the ambient. The first heatings occurred in November, 1986. The last three heatings were located near the start line of "K" Longwall Panel in the southwest where mining had begun on May 21, 1990. All of the heated areas had been at the time of detection, or were sometime areas of high ventilation pressure differentials or high air velocities. All of the heated areas are in an expanded seam with associated, extensive floor heave which is characteristic of all of the expanded seam thus far exposed by development mining in the No. 5 Mine. Jim Walter Resources, Inc. submitted a plan to MSHA which would reduce the potential for spontaneous combustion at the No. 5 Mine by reducing high air velocities and high pressure differentials in the gob. These two parameters are the dynamics which feed oxygen to the pyrite, thus initiating the oxidation process which can lead to spontaneous combustion. No. 5 Nine operated under this plan for 29 shifts before mining on the longwall was stopped by MSHA and the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan revoked. This paper briefly details the geology of the expanded seam and history of the heatings. It also gives a retrospective view of the operation under the Spontaneous Combustion Control Plan and reasons why it was revoked by MSHA. Currently, knowledge of the reaction process of the footwall coal seams at No. 5 Mine and other potential spontaneous combustion seams in the United States is limited. There are techniques used in the United States and other countries to minimize the potential for heatings in spontaneous combustion prone areas. The No. 5 Mine has attempted to utilize this current technology. However, in deep, gassy mines the problem is complex.

Budgets are key financial and behavior drivers for most businesses, including mining. Budgets are used to link strategic objectives to tactical decisions, to measure performance, and to provide basic financial planning. More accurate and pertinent budgets should result in improved strategic decision making and performance measures. This paper discusses how a process based production and cost database, based on activity based costing models and the one year production plan, can be used to create the annual budget for an operating mine as an Activity Based Budget (ABB). A case study is used to compare budgets derived from traditional methods and an ABB approach. It is evident that the ABB method is more accurate.

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).

This paper presents an overall stabilization method to eliminate the potential of reoccurrence of subsidence over abandoned mine lands (AML). The method considers column grouting at specific locations, including the destressed and stress concentration zones, instead of grouting around and beneath damaged structures. The latter method is currently commonly used for AML subsidence abatement. The finite element method (FEM) can be used to calculate stress distribution in the strata before and after grouting. A grouting pattern is generated that includes the location and number of grouting holes. Stress concentration can be reduced or eliminated. A comparative analysis, including the number of grouting holes, area of grouting influence, stress level and potential of subsidence reoccurrence, is also presented.

"A new rock classification, Rock Mass Quality Rating (RMQR) proposed by the authors is briefly explained and its application for the design of tunnels and large underground openings support systems is described in this paper. RMQR is an index to evaluate the state of rock mass. The preliminary support design may be based on the concept to prevent structurally controlled failures of rock mass. RMQR can also evaluate the yielding characteristics of rock masses so that it is possible to design a support system to prevent or control the deformation of surrounding rock through the utilization of the proposed rock mass classification and some analytical and numerical techniques.INTRODUCTIONThe first three authors proposed a new rock classification system named Rock Mass Quality Rating (RMQR) (Aydan et al. 2014). RMQR quantifies the rock mass state, and using the classification system together with intrinsic geo-mechanical properties of intact rock, possible geo-mechanical properties of rock masses can be estimated. The instability modes of underground openings can be structurally controlled because of the orientation of discontinuities in rock mass and the in-situ stress induced (Aydan 1989; Aydan et al. 1993, 1996; Aydan and Genis, 2010). The authors (Aydan and Ulusay, 2013; Aydan, 2016) have also tried to apply this system to the design of a tunnel support system. The authors presented initial guidelines for the RMQR classification system earlier (Aydan and Ulusay, 2013).In this paper, the authors provide further guidelines and establish some criteria for support system design that considers loading conditions and types of underground structure according to RMQR. Guidelines are alsos proposed for selecting the proper size of rockbolts, rock anchors, shotcrete, steel ribs and concrete liner. These guidelines are based on past experiences with various underground structures, theoretical understanding and the anticipated behavior of rock mass under given in-situ stress conditions and excavation techniques. The authors also utilized some databases developed for large underground caverns and tunnels excavated in squeezing or rock-bursting ground conditions."

Since the critical role of oxygen in xanthate flotation of sulphides was established (1) subsequent studies have been concerned mainly with the galena-xanthate system. It is therefore surprising to find at the conclusion of a comprehensive review of the topic by Granville, Finkelstein and Allison (2) that it was not possible for them to draw unequivocable conclusions on the mechanism of xanthate adsorption. It was apparent that some new advances were likely if systems other than galena-xanthate (Pbs/x-) were examined. (2) Specifically a less reactive sulphide such as ZnS may interact with flotation reagents at a slower rate than PbS and more information per unit time gathered. Again ZnS is far less reactive electrochemically than PbS or stated equivalently, it is a poorer semiconductor than PbS. More importantly, the ability of ZnS to act as a semi-conductor can be controlled photochemically rather than by direct doping reactions for which it is difficult to assess the uniformity of doping. Thus the conductivity of ZnS can be made the same as that of PbS by irradiating the ZnS with ultraviolet light at circa 360 n.m. (3)

Open-pit mining began at Red Dog in 1989. Mining is expected to continue past 2030 but closure planning is an ongoing process. Geochemical studies of rock and tailings were begun in 1996 as part of development of closure plans to address leaching of metals and ARD. The deposit has many different primary and secondary sulfur minerals in amounts that preclude the use of conventional geochemical characterization methods. This paper will describe development of a specific chemical method to estimate the speciation of sulfur and classify wastes according to reactivity.

Continuing advancements in manufactured diamond materials as used in rock cutting tools have created a new generation of high production tools for mining. This paper reviews the three major manufactured diamond product types available in the mining industry as supplied by General Electric Co., Specialty Materials Dept., and examines the ways these materials are used. As an integral part of this examination, the economic impact of manufactured diamond tools is evaluuted. Time and again, one will find that the premium price for these tools is economically justified when compared to traditional tools.

If I told you tonight at the outset that my prognastications for the future of mine ventilation were imparted to me by a palm reader or inspired by a vision, you'd dismiss what I had to say before I said it! If, on the other hand, I told you that my forecasts were the result of an elaborate computer model, derived from a complex algorithm, which in turn relied on finite element analysis -- and the entire projection confirmed by on-site experiments with a turbo hybrid-flow mine fan -- you'd sit up in anticipation and hang on my every word!! All of which places me in a terrible dilemma, because my predictions really lie somewhere in between. My intent is to talk to you out of my background of forty years in mine ventilation, looking ahead to conditions that I expect to prevail in the next fifteen years. You may be curious why I picked an unlikely time span of 55 years for my overview, and my response is that it bridges a career lifetime. "The last forty", of course, corresponds with the period of my professional employment since graduating with a B.S. and M.S. here at Penn State. "The next fifteen" bridges the period I expect (the Lord willing) to remain professionally active -- and coincidently brings us into the beginning of the 21st century. (I must confess to stacking the deck a bit: Since it's infinitely harder to look ahead than to look behind, I purposely minimized the forecast period and maximized the history! Besides, "forty" and "fifteen" have a nice phonetic ring, perfect 20/20 vision sums to "forty", etc., etc.). With these disclaimers, I'll invite you to join me now in a fast 55-year overview of mine ventilation, of necessity limited to a broad-brush treatment of the subject. (After all, this is an after-dinner talk, not a marathon!) In each- segment, I've selected the seven topics that seem to me of paramount importance: in the first part, seven accomplishments in retrospect, and in the last, seven expectations for the future. (The number "seven" needn't confound you, either: In the bible, it signifies "wholeness" or "completeness".))

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. GENERAL STATEMENT The primary objectives of any field data gath¬ering effort should be to (1) identify and gather the data necessary for the project and (2) obtain the data in a state-of-the-art manner. All too often the initial field data are collected both areally and tem¬porally in an illogical manner without the guidance of a conceptual model of the ground water flow systems involved or even a review of existing geo¬logic literature on the area of interest. The initial data collected frequently are of limited value while necessary basic reconnaissance information is miss¬ing. Initial field data should be collected with the intent of developing a hydrologic overview of the potential mine site and surrounding area. Ob¬viously, one of the initial objectives is to define the area requiring a hydrologic investigation. The data requirements should be identified by the time frame in which collection should be made and by the corresponding increase in sophistication of the data requirements with development and operation of the mine. The data requirements are summarized in Table 1. INITIAL LEVEL SITE INVESTIGATION Area Determination The initial task of any hydrogeologic investi¬gation is to determine the boundaries of the area requiring study. Obviously, the site of the proposed mine is included in the study area. The areal extent beyond the site may be determined from an eval¬uation of existing geologic and topographic maps. Those formations that overlie the ore body, the formations containing the ore body, and the formation(s) that lies immediately beneath the ore body are of direct concern for proper site recon¬naissance. Additional formations below the ore body may require study depending upon their thick¬ness, hydraulic conductivity, and degree of inter¬connection with the mine workings. This initial viewpoint identifies hydrostratigraphic units based strictly on geologic concepts such as mineralogy and structure. Formation outcrops, synclines, an¬ticlines, faults, and fracture and joint patterns are used to delineate the area of the site reconnaissance. The simplistic hydrogeologic environment (il¬lustrated in Fig. 3, chapter 2) requires that field data be collected via test wells and/or geophysical techniques. This approach is necessitated by the lack of surface features such as formation outcrops, streams, and springs. Fig. 5 (chapter 2) illustrates a slightly more complex hydrogeologic regime. The potential mine sites at locations A, B, C, D, and E each intercept a different ground water flow sys¬tem or combination of flow systems. Therefore, each mine location requires that a different area and size of area be investigated. A more complex geologic setting as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 (chapter 2) may be approached differently. The area included for the site recon¬naissance should encompass sufficient surrounding area to include the outcrops of those formations suspected of being influenced by the future mine. Even adjacent areas not suspected of being influ¬enced may be investigated if the formations of in¬terest crop out in those areas. Such an extension of the area of investigation would provide a greater regional understanding of the hydrogeologic properties of the formations (hydrostratigraphic units) of interest. Geologic Investigation The initial step before conducting the site re¬connaissance is to review all existing literature on the geology of the area. Existing information should be augmented with new exploration data on the dip, strike, thickness, and lateral extent of the for¬mations in the area. Exploration hole logs should be reviewed for indications of lost circulation, rub¬ble zones, and water producing zones. The Amax Gold Guanaco mine is located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 260 km southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. The 6,000 tpd leach operation produces approximately 90,000 oz of gold, and 360,000 oz of silver per year. Production began in 1987, and the operation has been managed by Amax Gold since 1992. The mine has been plagued in the past by high operating costs and low production. Several significant changes have been made to the operations which have resulted in lower costs and higher operating efficiencies. A review of these changes is presented herein.

GENERAL STATEMENT Data frequently can be collected by several dif¬ferent methods. The method required for the nec¬essary precision for inflow prediction to mines should be selected and other methods avoided. Pre¬cision monitoring or measuring techniques fre¬quently require more time, expertise, and expense in their implementation that may not be justifiable. The temporal distribution of the data needs also may dictate the method used for data collection. Continuous recording devices may be required for time sensitive data whereas point measurements of other parameters may be adequate. Data needs will vary as the hydrologic investigation proceeds. In¬itial data needs may require only a qualitative col¬lection of data such as the areal distribution of precipitation. Subsequent data needs may require the measurement of ground water levels to the near¬est hundredth of a foot. Data requirements can be difficult to fulfill for ground water systems. This is particularly true for anisotropic, heterogeneous hydrostratigraphic units since the hydrogeologic parameters vary both ver¬tically and areally. Techniques exist for determining the storage characteristics of both unconfined and confined hydrostratigraphic units but these pro¬cedures require the installation of multiple wells in the same unit which may be impractical. Specific tests are discussed subsequently that permit the determination of vertical hydraulic conductivity. Data collected from field procedures or tests are generally preferred to laboratory derived data. This is especially true for hydrogeologic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity. SURFACE WATER SYSTEMS Precipitation Precipitation data can be collected from sources that maintain a historical record. The US Depart¬ment of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmos¬pheric Administration (NOAA), maintains weather observation stations across the country. Such a sta¬tion frequently can be found near a proposed mine site but the type of weather data collected varies from station to station. Fortunately, precipitation data are collected ubiquitously. The data collected by NOAA can be purchased for the area of interest in the form of monthly and annual tabulations. Private weather stations constitute a second source of precipitation data. Existing data usually are analyzed by one of three methods. The potential worldwide "market" for metallurgical bauxite is about 94 million MT. The high degree of concentration of the alumina sector, combined with the high percentage of long-term contractual relationships, results in a small spot market with an illdefined price structure. Further segmentation occurs based on bauxite quality and alumina plant design. The potential 'free" market is estimated to be about 18 million MT that represent the requirements of nonintegrated alumina producers. It, too, is covered almost entirely by multi-year supply contracts.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.
