Observations made from laboratory analysis of samples of fine-grained argillaceous materials (shales) subjected to various changes in moisture content have been correlated to loss of strength in the rock material. This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

When an economic mineral deposit is first discovered, it is almost immediately defined in terms of tonnage and grade. As exploration and assessment continue, the initial definition is ordinarily qualified by such terms as "proven," "probable" and so on. Even at this stage, the fundamental philosophies of the discoverers may manifest themselves in conservative or optimistic views of the deposit's potential. It is unusual, however, for the philosophies to be expressed in terms of metallurgical performance criteria at such an early stage unless the ore is very unusual in its chemistry or mineralogy. Even before drilling is completed, the first mining plans appear, with or without the benefit of metallurgical test data. This is the point at which management philosophies can have some of their greatest impacts. In ideal cases, where large, uniform ore bodies can be developed and mined according to assay cutoffs, the conventional philosophy of maximizing tonnage while minimizing cost can be followed without much metallurgical difficulty. Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.

The calculation of open pit operations' capacities has been the subject of many studies using computer simulations. The common problems of simulation are that if one desires a realistic picture of an operation the programming work becomes long and expensive and that the program requires a large computer and long time to run. The method presented in this paper overcomes these problems by using a straightforward calculation procedure. It is based on the queuing theory's simple formula for waiting time in a closed circuit and uses a system of correction factors, which reflect the loading, travel, and dumping times' relative variabilities and which have been found by 1) mathematical analysis and 2) simulations of basic circuits. The method includes the main parameters of the operation: numbers, sizes and operational availabilities of trucks, shovels and dumping point, distribution of the production over shovels, trucks' loading, travel (loaded and empty) and dumping times as well as their variabilities, shift's composition. The procedure models: the average duration of a complete truck cycle during stationary and non-stationary periods during the shift as a function of the number of trucks in the circuit, the composition of the average 100% operated shift, the simultaneous probabilities of operationally available shovels and trucks and the distribution of shovels and trucks according to production and cycle times. The procedure can be programmed for a small computer and requires only short computing time, which makes extensive studies of various parameter combinations practical to carry out. The development of the method is an extension of previous work by Morgan and Peterson {1}, who by simulation established the relation between the match factor (which is the ratio between the sum of one loading time pr truck in the circuit and the complete net cycle time) and the shovel's efficiency, and by Hayes, Splaine and Whitaker {2}, who established this relation from a large number of observations in the Nchanga pit in Zambia. The present method establishes this relation by a straightforward calculation procedure. Theoretical solutions to some situations are found in the litterature on the queuing theory. The papers {3},{4} and {5} give solutions to situations, which fall outside those encountered in the shovel-trucks circuit. These solutions together with simulations of in-termediary situations have been used to establish an interpolation procedure for the correction factors to be applied to the waiting time formula in order to cover the situations encountered in practice.

Large diameter autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semi-autogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology which provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant it is to be installed in. This is particularly true in autogenous and semi-autogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only ?paper.? Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs and operating practices, and provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980's. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series because they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance.

At the Schwartzwalder Mine (Cotter Corporation, Golden, Colorado) ion exchange resins have been used in mine water treatment experiments. The experiments, initiated in October 1979 and currently in progress, demonstrate that mine water uranium values can be reduced to levels as low as 10 ppb. Duolite® A-101D, a strongly basic anion exchange resin, was tested in laboratory-scale columns (1 inch diameter) initially and then in pilot-scale columns (4 inch diameter), using both co-current and counter-current operational modes. Observations and conclusions resulting from these studies can be summarized as follows: (1) Duolite® A-101D appears to have successfully extracted uranium at influent levels of approximately 2.0 ppm over multiple loading and elution cycles, consistently producing effluent concentrations as low as 10 ppb uranium. (2) Based upon present test data, counter-current regeneration appears to be the key to successful operation. Upflow loading and downflow elution are the preferred modes for service and regeneration, respectively. (3) Filtration is a necessary pretreatment to remove fine clay and inorganic precipitates that will foul the resin, causing excessive pressure drop and poor loading and elution kinetics. (4) This waste treatment application is unique in that it offers the opportunity to recover some or all of the capital investment in the treatment facility

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. In this paper several leaching tests were per-formed to optimize the leaching section of a hydrometallurgical process for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. Zinc and manganese oxides were dissolved by an acidic-reductive leaching using sulphuric acid and oxalic acid as reductant. Leaching tests were developed according to a full factorial design. The operational variables were pulp percentage, sulphuric acid concentration, temperature and oxalic acid concentration. Additional tests were performed to evaluate the precipitation rate of Mn and Zn oxalates. Finally a hydrometallurgical process were proposed for the recycling of alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries, in which Zn and MnO2 are recovered from purified solution by electrowinning: Zn is recovered as metallic compound, while Mn can be recovered as electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD), but recovery of further manganese compounds is possible with simple process changes.

The advent of inexpensive computers has opened vast opportunities for improved planning and control of capital projects. The mining and mineral processing industries have welcomed the opportunity, and new and improved quantitative management techniques have abounded. This chapter will discuss commonly used computer applications for economic justification of the project, preparation of the cost estimate, planning the work schedule, monitoring work progress, and control of costs and productivity. Finally, there is a review of the degree to which the industry uses these applications. Our experience suggests that while we in the industry have been quick to adopt the new techniques, the quality of our input data has not always kept pace. During the next decade, our push should be toward improving the quality of the basic data and assumptions so that we can fully benefit from the sophisticated techniques. The GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) principle is a wellworn cliche, but it is especially valid here. One of the keys to getting good input is commitment. Unless the managers who are to use or benefit from the system are committed to it, the effort will fail. They must be com- mitted to the underlying principles of planning and control sufficiently to expend their time and resources on them; planning should be especially given emphasis. They can't be too busy to plan.

Pressure tunnel includes water-supply tunnels and tunnels for hydroelectrical power plants. Their design principles are different from those of water/wastewater/conveyance and transportation tunnels. Though theoretical pressure tunnel design guidelines exist, a comprehensive guide to summarize these guidelines to facilitate the planning and design of a pressure tunnel program is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to fulfill this need. It first provides key pressure tunnel design concepts in hard rock environment; then, it illustrates associated final lining design principles, including the design of un-reinforced concrete lining, steel lining, and reinforced concrete lining. Design diagrams and a flowchart for the reinforced concrete lining design are provided.

Outokumpu Tara Mines located near Dublin, Ireland is Europe's largest producer of lead and zinc concentrates. To reduce dewatering costs and to improve environmental and working conditions, elimination of the lead concentrate thermal dryer was required. This paper describes the development and implementation of the pressure ceramic technology at Tara to replace a conventional vacuum filter/oil-fired dryer system. In 1996 the pressure ceramic filter dewatered 66,600tonnes of lead concentrate, producing a cake at 6 % moisture. Substantial operating cost savings have been realized. Commissioning of a second pressure ceramic filter to handle over 300,000 tonnes/year of zinc concentrates is scheduled for the first quarter of 1997.

Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development recently presented. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex, as many factors such as mine design, production scheduling as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.

A fatal accident may result when a dozer is driven over a hidden void in a coal surge pile and the dozer falls into the void, burying and suffocating the dozer operator. This type of accident was analyzed by researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safely and Health using inexpensive fault-tree programs that had been developed, for use on a personal computer. Fault-tree analysis is a systematic safety-analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an accident event to the identification of the root causes of that event. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between the basic events as well as the intermediate events leading up to the accident. A sensitivity analysis on assigned probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile. Operational guidelines and engineering controls are suggested to decrease the probability of a burial event.

More than 80 million metric tons of fly ash is produced annually in the U.S. as coal combustion by-product. Fly ash can be converted to value-added products if unburned carbon is reduced to less than 2.5%. However, most of fly ash is currently landfilled as waste due to lack of efficient purification technologies to separate unburned carbon from fly ash. A rotary triboelectrostatic separator has been developed and patented recently at the University of Kentucky with unique features. Several fly ash samples have been used to understand the effects of major process parameters on the separation performance. The results show that compared to existing triboelectrostatic separators, the rotary triboelectrostatic separator has significant advantages in particle charging efficiency, solids throughput, separation efficiency, applicable particle size range. Recovery of phosphate concentrate at Texasgulf’s Aurora Mine has received increased attention as existing mine and plant production capacity limits are reached. Improved mining techniques and mineral processing of waste streams offer the potential to increase phosphate production without major expansion. Innovative processes are being identified to maximize pit mining recovery and to minimize waste stream losses. This results in more effective use of the phosphate. Texasgulf Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine. The Aurora phosphate rock mine and refining facilities are located in North Carolina on the south shore of the Pamlico Sound. Phosphate ore is recovered by open- cast mining techniques. Draglines and other earthmoving equipment are used to uncover and mine the phosphate ore. The mined ore then is slurried and pumped about 8 km (5 miles) to the processing plant.

As the 2011 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2011 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 330. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2011 Transactions is the second Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely in electronic format. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will better serve the mining community. Based on the feedback from the 2010 Transactions in e-book format, I believe that the transition to the all-digital format was the proper decision. The 2011 Transactions contain some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a 10-year profile of roof and rib fall trends from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a new cross-disciplinary application of the tools of epidemiology to assess and mitigate risk in coal mines . This 2011 Transactions comprise of a total of 82 technical papers (626 pages including index), including all 19 papers published in 2011 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 63) and all 32 papers published in 2011 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 28). Additionally, this volume contains 31 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 82 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2011 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Comminution circuits in general account for fifty percent of capital and operating costs for a processing plant. Significant advances have been made in optimization of these circuits. One would expect a few circuits to be the favored designs for plants. Review of grinding circuits worldwide indicates that a variety of circuit designs are utilized for non-technical reasons. A brief review of circuits and reasons for their selection is given in this paper.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

The behavior of a salt rock mass is strongly related to a creep phenomenon. The amount of creep depends on the level of stress generated in the underground excavation. Additionally, security conditions and the lifespan of an underground cavern excavated under this geological conditions depend on the evolution of creep. Based on the experience of the failure of the Old Underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá(Colombia) and the construction of the new one, the theoretical framework to predict the creep behavior of a salt rock mass is explained. The theoretical formulations are calibrated based on actual observations of the material behavior to predict the lifespan of this striking structure.
