Air overpressure (AOp) and peak particle velocity (PPV) are the most undesirable effects of blasting in mines. It is an urgent need to design a predictor model for AOp and PPV for universal applications to minimize environmental effects and damages that occur due to blasting. The present study attempts to design an artificial neural network (ANN) model for the prediction of AOp and PPV in different conditions. In this study, the blast design parameters (number of holes, depth of the blast hole, stemming length, spacing, burden, distance of vibration monitoring location from the blast site, charge weight per delay) of two active mines (coal and iron ore) are considered in four different conditions for training and testing of the model for the prediction of AOp and PPV. The model was trained and tested in four different combinations of data (trained using data of one mine and tested using data of another mine, trained and tested using data of coal mine, trained and tested using data of an iron ore mine, trained and tested using combined data of both the mines) for examining the applicability in different conditions. The results indicate that R2 values are ranged from 0.886 to 0.908 and 0.8728 to 0.8959, respectively, in the prediction of PPV and AOp. A comparative study of the performances of the developed model with the other empirical model is also demonstrated. For this, the site constants of different empirical models were estimated individually for both the mines. The study results indicated that the ANN model performs much better than all the empirical models. It can be inferred from the results that blast vibration cannot be accurately predicted only from charge per delay and distance from the blast hole. The ANN model was considered many other factors and thus can predict the vibration level more accurately.

Construction of the first phase of the Sao Paulo Metro, the North-South Line, will be completed late in 1974. The downtown section of this line consists of 2.2 miles of 19.6-foot diameter soft ground tunnels and 3 subway stations. The entire tunnel - station package was let to one contractor. A plan and profile of the tunnels and stations is shown on Figure 1. Passage of the tunnels under Boa Vista Street in the Sao Paulo Financial District was one of the major challenges. The street is only 50 feet wide from building line to building line and flanked by 10 to 20 story buildings. The tunnels pass within 4 feet of adjacent footings. Further south, the tunnels run 13 feet below the flat foundations of the Caixa Economica, a massive 11 to 14 story building. Surface settlement had to he limited to less than .07 feet/tunnel and good face control and grouting procedures were essential. For this reason, full face cutting wheel tunneling machines were selected to drive the tunnels south of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia which included Boa Vista Street and the Caixa Economica. The tunnels north of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia were driven under a fairly wide Avenue and greater settlements were permitted. Open face shields were selected to drive these tunnels. Most of the work has now been completed and analyzed. A portion of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension through Somerville, Massachusetts consists of 1,553cm (5,092 LF) of hard rock tunneling 6.7m (22 ft.) diameter horeshoe, 148m (485 LF) of mixed face tunneling, 7.2m (23 ft.) diameter circular, beneath an active railroad in a heavily commercialized business district. This paper will deal with the excavation of the mixed face area without the use of a shield. It will address the special excavation and support problems encountered during tunneling operations using the floating crown bar and modified spiling methods. Topics covered will include excavation and support methods, cement grouting, compaction grouting, and instrumentation. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts Somerville/ Cambridge, Massachusetts is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) 5.1km (17,000 ft.) Red Line Extension. This extension runs from Harvard Square, Cambridge, to Alewife Brook Parkway, Cambridge through Somerville. This portion (MBTA Contract #091-106) required the excavation and concreting of 1,701m (5,580 LF) of single track twin tunnels consisting of 1,553m (5,092 LF) of conventional hard rock tunneling under 56 residential properties and 148m (485 LF) of mixed face tunneling beneath an active railroad in a heavily commercialized business district. The mined diameter of the mixed face tunnel is 7.16m (23.5 ft.) Access to the tunnel was via the Summer Street vent shaft, and the two Grove Street access shafts where all tunnel excavated materials were removed.

The CMC-3 new generation system for continuous methane monitoring enables on-line measurement of methane concentration within the range of 0-100% CH4 with a great autonomy of operation. In principle the system has been worked out in the asspect of hazard detection in mines endangered with rock and gas outbursts. But after last crash in the Halemba colliery, according to the recommendation of the after-accident committee, the system was directed to this colliery for operational tests. The paper describes construction and functions of this system and gives some results of tests conducted at the Halemba colliery. The results point out the necessity of using monitoring equipment of continuous operation in mines of high dynamics of methane emission. INTRODUCTION Commonly used in Polish coal mining the methane monitoring systems of CTT/63/46 Up or CMM-20 and CMC-1 type are based on cyclic measurements with 4-minute repetition of measurements. This period has been stated sufficient from viewpoint of methane emission dynamics under normal exploatation. In these systems, automatic switching-off electrical power is performed by the surface station, i.e in case of detecting exceeded concentration value the station generates control pulse signal which actuates the switchng-off devices CRA and IZZO. Such a way of disconnection causes a considerable time delay, up to several minutes, in electric power break at hazardous areas. In the methane monitoring system with the new CMC-3 station, the different phylosophy of operation has been applied. Measurement of methane concentration is performed in a continnous way. In case of exceeding the alarm value, immediate control of the IZZO unit directly by methane monitor follows and consequently energy break without necessity of communicating with the surface station. Alarm values are set directly in methane monitor. The system ensures central powering of underground equipment from the surface, and in case of power failure the methane monitor equipped with battery operates autonomously for about 12 hours. Such an extention of the methane monitor funtionality has been achieved thanks to the use of internal microprocessor controller. The system with the CMC-3 station has been worked out in the aspect of methane hazard detection in mines exposed to gas outbursts. Flotation of coal after multistage addition of frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA). A correlation between low ash content, low specific gravity, and high reactivity of coal was observed. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, removal of mineral matter enhances reactivity through the physical changes brought about by ash removal. A detailed analysis of pre-ignition kinetics indicated the possible effect of bulk density of coal in terms of resistance to volatile release and effective (available) surface area of coal. In the char combustion stage, mineral matter seems to influence reactivity through catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/non- combustible material, internal pore structure, and surface roughness.

Nine western states contain significant barite deposits, but most deposits are in Nevada, which has been the principal western producer for more than three decades. Nevada produces about 85% of the total United States production, but about one-half of the barite consumed in the country is imported. Approximately 95% of the barite is used in drilling muds. Sharply decreased oil and gas drilling, starting in early 1982, severely depressed the domestic barite industry. Other problems for western barite include long distances to the areas of major drilling, high railroad-freight rates, and increased barite imports. Bedded deposits, formed by submarine exhalative processes, account for almost all western production, and reserves are large.

A numerical procedure to model flow networks using a node-based approach is discussed, and the analysis encompasses both steady-state and transient solutions. A family of computer codes has been developed using the node-based approach. This technique is illustrated by applying two of the computer codes to mine ventilation networks.

A coal bunker basically acts as a buffer and regulator to reduce the interruptions between its proceeding production system and succeeding haulage system so as to maximize the availability of the whole system. Although such a role has long been recognized, quantitatively studying it is still rarely seen in the literatures. Its unique characteristics, coupled with numerous transitional states, make it very complex to describe the state transitional process in analytical models and, also very difficult to seek an analytical solution. Moreover, the analytical models inappropriately consider the state of bunker being full or empty as a kind of failure, therefore, by no means can they realistically describe the impact of the difference between rates of coal flowing to and from a bunker on the system availability. In light of this, Monte Carlo simulation methods are suggested to reach an approximate solution. In comparison, simulation methods are simpler and more effective than analytical approaches. Applications of simulation methods to a Northern colliery for determining bunker size from the viewpoint of maximizing system's availability are discussed. The results are satisfactory.

Today more than ever, there is an increased demand for higher plant production capacities and efficiencies to offset the increasing costs for labor and materials. Plants involved in processing large volumes of bulk materials are particularly interested in more efficient material handling systems to (1) reduce labor and maintenance costs, (2) improve blending of non-uniform raw material feed to processing facilities, (3) improve blending of finished bulk materials from storage. DragScraper systems are being used effectively for handling a variety of bulk materials in both indoor and outdoor storage. Materials being handled include ores, chemicals, coke, clay, and stone, to name a few. Handling capacities these machines can provide vary from a few tons to over 1500 tons per hour. The basic components of a DragScraper machine consist of a bottomless Crescent scraper, a two or three-drum DragScraper hoist assembly including gas, diesel, or electric power unit, operating cables, guide blocks, and either fixed or mobile head and tail structures. They are presently available in sizes through 15 cubic yards, for operating spans up to 1000 feet.

Kerr-McGee has operated the Ambrosia Lake uranium mill since startup in 1958. Tonnage milled per day has varied from 3500-7000 tons. The mill capacity is currently rated at 7000 tons per day. The process consists of two parallel circuits following crushing and sampling, \\lhich include open circuit rod mill grinding, sulfuric acid leach, cyclone classification, and counter-current washing circuits of sand classifiers and slime thickeners. Pregnant solution is clarified and polished by precoat pressure leaf filters prior to amine solvent extraction. Yellowcake is precipitated from the pregnant strip solution with ammonia, filtered and dried.

In recent years, there has been increased interest in construction problems presented by karst topography. Twenty-five years ago, karst areas were by-passed for development. Today, the high cost of land and population pressures are requiring utilization of karst areas. Areas exhibiting karst features can be satisfactorily developed so that construction can proceed in a normal manner; or the areas may be left undeveloped and the underground drainage system abused by improper use causing or contributing to structural collapse, excessive erosion, and a grave threat to the stability of land development and the environment. The term "karst" is a comprehensive term applied to areas underlain by soluble rock that possess a topography formed chiefly by the dissolving of rock and the diversion of surface waters to underground routes. There are four features which contribute to the maximum development of karst. 1. A soluble rock, preferably limestone, must be present at or near the surface of the ground. Occasionally, dolomite will suffice.

Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, assessed the geological effects on the ratio of maximum subsidence and extraction thickness, hown as the subsidence factor, to develop a simple method for predicting the maximum subsidence. The study is restricted to the Northern Appalachian Coal basin where data were collected from 13 coal mines. A model previously developed to relate the subsidence factor with the lithology and with the width and depth of working panels was used in the assessment. The result shows the possibility of determining maximum subsidence without resorting to a rigorous method.

Floc properties such as density, size, size distribution, porosity and shear strength govern the effectiveness of flocculation as a process for solid-liquid separation. Floc characteristics desired for removal of suspended solids by sedimentation or filtration, for example, are known to be different. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate floc density using a simplified procedure and determine the effects of various physical and chemical factors on the density of floes obtained. A brief discussion of techniques employed to measure the shear strength of flocs and the effect of various parameters on the floc strength is also presented.

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 = 21 µm) is enhanced near the point-of-zero-charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and by adjusting the pH to precipitate surface-active metal hydroxy species, which promote agglomeration and produce low-moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and the correlations among them are presented.

The world's reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India, and the U.S. are expected to remain the leading producing countries. The U.S. will continue to be the largest consumer of the production. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4,410Mt. This is about 50% of the projected capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydro-carbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the U.S. requirements.

Computer programs developed as part of the PROSPECTOR project at SRI International can indicate where the highest grade hypogene copper occurs in porphyry copper prospects. The programs are useful in selecting drilling targets in untested porphyry deposits. Because of mineralogic, structural and lithologic variations in porphyry-type deposits, three distinct computer programs have been constructed; however, this paper considers only the stockwork type in homogeneous rock (similar to the Lowell and Guilbert model). The programs represent models in the form of inference networks that utilize the mineralogic, alteration, lithologic, structural, geochemical and geophysical data normally collected prior to a drilling decision. One example of an application of the PROSPECTOR program for a stockwork-homogeneous porphyry is given: Island Cooper in British Columbia. Computations based on the surface geologic, geochemical and geophysical data for Island Copper clearly disclose the best hypogene grade of the deposit. Other deposits were tested in the programs as well, and in each case PROSPECTOR programs indicate the region with the highest hypogene grade.

"In our work, the preparation technique of high pure manganese sulfate directly from low-grade rhodochrosite ore (MnCO3) was studied and improved intensively, including the effective leaching process and the short purifying process. Based on the same ion effect, the repeated leaching of rhodochrosite with sulfuric acid is proposed to improve the solubility of Mn2+ and inhibit the dissolution of the impurities Ca2+ and Mg2+. Moreover, the repeated leaching process could make full use of rhodochrosite and lower the dosage of sulfuric acidas raw material. With the aid of theoretical calculation, Ba(OH)2 was chose to adjust the pH value of manganese sulfate solution, and BaF2 to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+completely in the process of purifying. The results demonstrate that the extraction ratio and the recovery ratio of manganese reached 94.3% and 92.7%, respectively, which shows the prospect of industrial application. In manganese sulfate production, the heavy metal impurities have been decreased to less than 1ppm. Moreover, the content of calcium, magnesium and sodium has been decreased to less than 20ppm, which meets the standards of high pure reagent for energy and electronic materials. Our study enlightens an approach to the sustainable application of low-grade rhodochrosite.Introduction Low-grade manganese carbonate ores (=14%) becomes gradually the main resources for exploitation and applications in China according to national mineral resources survey (Tan et al 2004 and Singh et al 2017). Therefore, the electrolytic deposition technique of rhodochrosite faces great challenges including low electrolysis efficiency, high-resource input and high-pollution discharge (Fu et al 2010, Michelis et al 2009, Zhang et al 2013). Recently, more and more amount of manganese series with high or super high purity such as MnSO4, MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO is demanded with the development of energy and electronic materials. Due to low-grade ores containing multiple elements such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium, conventional preparation of manganese sulphate with high purity from electrolytic product is characterized by long production-cycle and high-energy consumption (Subrat et al 2011, Mpho et al 2013). By contrast, hydrometallurgical method combined with thermal decomposition, hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processes has been widely studied because of its high efficiency, low consumption and low cost (Chen et al 2008). But the key problem in direct preparation of manganese series form low-grade rhodochrosite is to remove completely the multiple impurities such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium (Liu et al 2014). So it is urgent to develop a sustainable alternative approach with character of short process, high efficiency and environmental friendly."
