The disposable diesel exhaust filter (DDEF) system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Industry cooperators for heavy-duty permissible, diesel-powered haulage vehicles, effectively reduces in-mine diesel particulate matter concentrations up to 95%. However, there are concerns about the hazards that exist when the filter is used in situations for which it was not designed. This work investigates the exhaust gas temperature limits to which the filter elements can be exposed without posing a safety or health hazard, such as 6re or off-gassing toxic compounds. A filter approved by the Mine Safety and Health administration and after-market filters were evaluated under varying engine exhaust conditions to determine if after-market filters pose an unacceptable hazard when used in a DDEF system. Filters were laboratory tested at engine exhaust temperatures ranging from 77°C to 290°C. Of the seven filter types tested, six appeared suitable for use on water scrubber-based cooling systems and two appeared suitable for use on dry heat exchanger type exhaust cooling systems with exhaust temperatures up to 150°C. Any filter elements used as exhaust filters on permissible diesel machines must be approved by MSHA for that application. Mine operators who wish to use an after-market filter element should request an MSHA field modification. MSHA will work with the mine and filter manufacturer to ensure its use in this exhaust system application does not pose a health or safety hazard.

Most mining applications of geostatistical simulation are to the simulation of quantitative variables, such as grade. In many instances the occurrence of quantitative variables and the values they take are controlled, at least partially, by qualitative, or categorical, variables. Examples include quartz-vein controlled gold orebodies and stratigraphic silver/lead/zinc deposits. In these cases a realistic simulation must include geological controls on the spatial distribution of the simulated quantitative variables. This paper describes extensions to, and algorithms for, the truncated plurigausian method of simulating categorical variables. The categorical variables are modelled as indicator random functions that represent the presence/absence of the variable at spatial locations. Stochastic images of the distributions are obtained by truncation of realisations of two Gaussian random functions simulated at the same locations. Parameters required are the thresholds for truncation of the Gaussian variables and the covariance structure of each Gaussian random function. These parameters are estimated from the experimental proportions of each variable and indicator direct and cross semi-variograms. A detailed case study is shown in order to illustrate the procedure, to discuss the results and to present the algorithms for plurigaussian simulation.

Recently, noequilbrium electrokinetic measurements using laser-Doppler electrophoresis were reported by Miller et al. (1992) for alkali halides and the sign of their surface charge thus determined. These results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with KCI, under normal circumstances, being the most significant exception. In this regard, lattice defects (F centers and oxygen imperfections) have been found to influence the surface charge of KCI and its electrophoretic mobility. In particular, the presence of oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice has been found to be responsible for KCI's unexpected behavior. The concentration of oxygen defect states in KCI, as characterized by UV/Vis absorption, was varied in order to study their influence on the electrokinetic behavior and subsequently on the flotation response of KCl. At low oxygen contents « 60 ppm) KCI is positively charged as expected from lattice ion hydration theory. However, typically, KCI contains substantial oxygen (>300 ppm) sufficient to impart a negative surface charge which accounts for the selective flotation of KCI from NaCl by hetero-coagulation with oppositely charged alkyl amine hydrochloride collector colloids.

The Bureau of Mines conducts studies of the economic impacts of regulations on federal lands. These studies are part of the Bureau Potential Supply Analysis (PSA) program. To meet the needs of these studies, a methodology was developed to estimate operating and capital costs for a mineral deposit given its tonnage, grade, and depth. The format for the cost models in this study was developed at the Bureau's Western Field Operations Center (WFOC), Spokane, W. A., for studies of known and undiscovered resources on Federal lands. These cost models are described in a Bureau publication by Camm (1991).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted preliminary investigations on the leaching of phosphate ores obtained from deposits in the western United States using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of methanol. Phosphate extractions in excess of 80 pct were obtained on an ore sample from Pocatello, ID. Initial leaching studies using the ore as received yielded extraction levels of approximately 35 pct. However, when the sample was ground for as little as 5 min in a rod mill, in methanol, then treated with HzS04, 82 pct extraction was achieved. The R2O3-P2O5 (R2O3 = Al2O3 + Fe2O3) ratio of the starting material was 0.11. Solubilized products after leaching exhibited an R2O3-P2O5 ratio of 0.02, which is well within desired limits. These results illustrate the potential of acid-alcohol leaching for recovering phosphate values from marginal-grade ores and as an alternative to methods involving current beneficiation techniques that yield lower phosphate recoveries.

Extensive deposits of bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite coals occur in the western United States (Figure 1). Over one trillion tons of identified resources have been located and inferred by geologists and more than 200 million tons of western coal are mined annually (1). In the future, production of western coals will increase significantly and approach national production levels of higher-rank eastern coals. Western coals will be utilized in new power plants as a replacement fuel for oil and gas and may be used in advanced technologies such as diesel engines or in direct-fired turbines. Since these applications require low-ash, low-sulfur coals, crushing to fine sizes and significant cleaning to remove minerals and sulfur will be required. Coal cleaning traditionally has been associated with reducing pyrite and other mineral matter from high-rank eastern coals. To date, insignificant quantities of western coals have been cleaned before utilization and limited data on their washability characteristics exist. Because of this lack of data, it is difficult to predict how these coals will react to standard washing techniques.

As one of the main power sources, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will continue to be applied on a large scale in the future market. Commercialized LIBs cathode materials contain various valuable metal elements including Li, Co, and Ni. The development of green and efficient recycling technology is essential. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as a new class of green solvents that could potentially be applied for the LIBs recycling industry due to their capability to leach the active materials without the introduction of environmentally hazardous reagents as used in conventional hydrometallurgy process. Considering the rapid progress, a critical review focusing on the progress and fundamentals about the overall efficiency has practical significance for the further advancement of this field. Herein, we briefly introduce the overall process of using DESs for LIBs recycling and specifically focus on the efficiency of each step. Current fundamental understandings and new experimental approaches to enhance the efficiency of the leaching process, the extraction process, and reusability are summarized. We expect this review article to inspire scientists to use DESs as powerful tools for advancing the frontiers of LIBs recycling.

In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

A highly undesirable side effect of the mining of coal is the release of acid forming chemicals into the ground water system. The disturbance of the ground during mining allows water to flow through the coal bearing strata and mine refuge where it absorbs iron and sulfide ions and thus becomes highly acidic. The highly acid mine water can then contaminate water supplies and can destroy many of the recreational uses of Pennsylvania's waterways. A great deal of effort has been expended to develop methods of controlling groundwater pollution from mine drainage. At the Pennsylvania State University there has been an ongoing effort to under- stand the chemistry of acid mine water formation and the hydrologic environment in which the acidic water migrates from the mine source into the ground water system. As a support to the hydrologic studies, geophysical studies have been used to help determine the geologic structure of the areas under study which are contaminated by acid water. In addition, the geophysical work has been used to define the type of information geophysical methods can give to determine which geophysical methods are most useful and to develop geophysical field procedures.

Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by the alveolar macrophage (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis resulting from occupational exposure to mineral dust. In order to determine if eicosanoid and cytokine production are altered by chronic inhalation of coal dust, we compared the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), thromboxane A2 (TxA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin 1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) by cultured AM from non-smoking normal human volunteers and coal miners. Inhibitors of eicosanoid biosynthesis were administered to AM from coal miners in order to determine if a link between eicosanoid and cytokine production exists in these cells. Basal PGE2, TxA2, TNF and IL-1 production by AM from active miners was increased compared to AM from normal volunteers. However, the production of these eicosanoids and cytokines by AM from former coal miners was reduced compared to control AM. Administration of the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, suprofen, and the lipoxygenase inhibitor, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, reduced PGE2 and TxA2 production in miners' AM but had no effect on LTB4, IL-1 or PDGF production. Specific inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK38,485 was associated with a significant reduction in TNF production in active miners' AM but had no effect on PGE2, LTB4 or IL-1 production. The prostacyclin analogue ZK96,480 also specifically inhibited TxA2 production in active miners' AM. The results of these studies suggest that coal dust exposure is associated with alterations in AM eicosanoid and cytokine production which may be relevant to the development of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In addition, the lack of effect of inhibitors of PGE2 biosynthesis on IL1 production in miners' AM suggests the production of these intercellular messengers may not be linked in AM chronically exposed to coal dust.

At least two dozen massive sulfide deposits in the southern Appalachians have supported significant mining operations. Literally hundreds more deposits are known to exist, but are too small to be of commercial interest. Essentially all that are being, or have been, mined are those deposits that were exposed at the surface when first discovered. It is reasonable to assume that many more massive sulfide deposits, large and small, exist hidden not far beneath the surface. The ideas I am sharing with you here today are based both on my personal studies of some of the deposits and on descriptions of deposits in the literature. An attempt will be made to account for the genetic interpretation problems raised by many of these deposits posessing both "syngenetic" and "epigenetic" features. In addition, an examination will be made of the possible relationships between the massive and the not-so-massive sulfide deposits in this region. Hopefully, these observations added to those of others will eventually lead to the synthesis of a better model on which we can base exploration programs in the southern Appalachians.

Electrochemical properties of silicate minerals govern their behavior in processes such as flocculation and enhanced oil recovery that can occur at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these properties as a function of temperature can be helpful in developing an under- standing of the role of these interfacial properties at non-ambient temperatures. Zeta potential of Sodium Kaolinite and quartz has been determined as a function of pH and temperature in this work. Both systems exhibited markedly different behavior at higher temperatures and also exhibited significant hysteresis. Results are examined in terms of possible dissolution of the minerals and surface reactions at different temperatures.

The effect of dissolved ions present in plant water on the flotation of phosphate ore from central Florida was investigated. Of the three most abundant ions, namely Ca++, Mg++ and SO4--, calcium ions were the most detrimental in the flotation of phosphate with sodium oleate collector. In one feed, a 10 ppm concentration of Ca++ ions reduced the BPL recovery from 86% to 46% whereas in the other a 40 ppm concentration lowered the recovery from 90% to 52%. The effect of Na2C03, NaHC03, Zeolite and EDTA to remove ca++ ions from water and hence improve apatite flotation was also studied.

Pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems provide alternative methods for the safe and efficient mining of the thin, high-grade coal seams found in the Southern Appalachians. Pneumatic systems eliminate most of the health and safety hazards associated with the operation of conventional mining and haulage equipment in small low-coal mines by removing powered mobile equipment from the mine. Ventilation is also improved by the coincidental removal of gas and respirable dust from the mine by the operation of the pneumatic loading and conveying system. Other significant advantages of pneumatic coal recovery systems are relative simplicity, operating flexibility, low capital cost, quiet operations, environmental benefits and ease of automation. The design considerations and field evaluations of experimental prototype pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems installed and operated in small thin-seam mines are presented in this paper. In addition, fundamental design criteria and recommendations for the installation and operation of a variety of pneumatic coal loading and conveying systems that offer alternative coal-recovery systems that alleviate the serious health and safety concerns of current small mine operations are proposed.

Editor&apos;s note: Minerals concentration is a disparate area, one involving many disciplines. Flotation, flocculation, reagents, microbial processes, gravity and magnetic separation, and the areas of coal and oil shale - concentration is relevant to all of these. In his article, Nagaraj reviews the latest developments and findings in concentration that have ocurred during the past year. Flotation The Monograph Series "Development in Mineral Processing," (Elsevier, 1985) was devoted to "Flotation of Sulfide Minerals." This volume has 26 articles covering the aspects of flotation chemistry, process development, plant design and equipment, and modeling and process control. The numerous articles on sulfide flotation had one recurring theme - the role of electrochemical processes and redox potentials in flotation and depression. Significant advances have been made in this area. A differential desorption-reflotation process was developed for the beneficiation of calcitic phosphate pebble (Hsieh and Lehr, Industrial Engineering and Chemistry, 1985). The carbonate and phosphate minerals were first separated from silica using fatty acid and the modifiers diphosphonic acid and HF. The collector on phosphate was then desorbed using sulfuric acid, and calcite was selectively floated without additional collector. A two-stage conditioning - initially at pH 10, followed by that at pH < 4.5 - with sodium oleate was developed to improve the separation between apatite and dolomite (Moudgil and Chanchani, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, MMP, 1985). Separation of Mussorie rock phosphate in India from gangue calcite, dolomite, silicates, pyrite, and carbonaceous impurities was achieved with a three-stage flotation only on -75 µm (-200 mesh) fraction (Vaman Rao et al., International Journal of Mineral Processing, IJMP, 1985). The separation of fine SiC whiskers from other products of coked rice hulls by immiscible liquid and froth flotation was achieved using M1BC, pine oil, and mineral spirits (Parekh and Goldberger, MMP, 1985). Flotation was more economical. The carrier flotation separation of hematite fines from quartz fines was effected using coarse hematite as a carrier and oleic acid and ferric chloride (Cristoveanu and Meech, CIM Bulletin, 1985). Potash recovery from brines by laboratory-pan solar evaporation and amine flotation was discussed by Foot and Juiatt (Salts and Brines &apos;85, Proceedings, 1985). Flotation in a 45-kg/h (99-lb per hour) unit recovered more than 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates containing 28% and 62% K2O, respectively. The effects of fresh concrete into cement and aggregate by a single-step flotation process in aqueous suspension was described (Naegle, Chemical Engineering Science, 1985). The physico-chemical principles for the selective separation of proteins from mixtures using flotation were discussed by Ostermaier and Dobias (Colloids & Surfactants, 1985). Selective flocculation of hematite from silica was studied by Bagster and Mcllvenny (IJMP, 1985). Selective flocculation was more favorable with more highly charged anionic polyacrylamides and with high molecular weight. The cationic and non-ionic polymers flocculated both minerals. In minerals mixtures, there appeared to be very little selectivity unless a combination of dispersant and electrolyte was used. The effect of dissolved minerals species, such as Cu, Fe, and Ni on flocculation of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite, and covellite was studied by Acar and Somasundaran (SME-AIME, 1985). Reagents There were some major advances made in reagent development for the minerals processing industry. Cyanamid introduced several classes of collectors, one of which - the diaryl monothiophosphates as acid circuit col¬lectors of sulfides and oxidesulfide ores - was commercialized in 1985. The monothiophosphates are more stable and powerful collectors than the xanthates and dithiophosphates. Hydrolyzed dithiophosphate containing 80% monothio and 20% dithiophosphate was found to give optimum recovery of copper from crude cementation precipitate and separation of Cu and Ni sulfides from matte (Akimova et al., Obogashch, Tonkov, Rud, OTR, 1985). This paper describes the geology and geotechnics associated with construction of the Thames Tunnel, part of the UK’s Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The 2.5km long twin tunnels run beneath the river Thames at depths of up to 40m and are currently under construction. They pass through varying geology comprising alluvium, terrace gravels and chalk with flints and are currently being bored using Herrenknecht mixshield slurry tunnel boring machines (TBM’s). This paper outlines the lithology and engineering properties of each geological formation and describes the geotechnical processes, potential hazards and difficulties experienced in the works. A summary is given into the extent of the investigative work in terms of route selection, tunnel design, TBM optimisation and further details are provided on the geotechnical aspects associated with the construction of the tunnel approach structures and the tunnels.

FTIR spectroscopy has been used for the characterization of adsorbed oleate at the fluorite surface. It has been found that modest changes in the adsorption density at high temperature and high oxygen potential do not provide a satisfactory explanation for the significant increase in the hydrophobic character of the system under similar conditions. Rather, FTIR spectroscopic measurements suggest that chemical interaction between adsorbed oleyl groups occurs at high temperature and/or oxygen potential and accounts for the increased hydrophobicity. Specifically, the intensity of the =CH bond of the adsorbed oleate diminishes at high temperature and/or high oxygen potential. Such a phenomenon was not observed in control tests with the calcium oleate soap. For extensive reaction at the fluorite surface, the presence of a new surface species has been identified. These results indicate that the fluorite surface catalyzes an oxidation and/or polymerization reaction between adsorbed oleyl groups which results in a more hydrophobic structure at the fluorite surface.

A prototype remote placer drill (RPD) has been designed and successfully tested in the offshore gold district of Nome, AK. The RPD system is unique in its design and in the cooperative support that was provided during its development by industry, academia and government. The RPD was conceived as a low-cost, rapid drill sampling system for the reconnaissance of marine precious metal placer deposits. The drill functions as a counter- f lush system. It incorporates a dual wall casing and a rotating percussion bit driven by way of a drill rod through the central eductor casing by a heavy duty pneumatic rock drill. The cost of drill sampling in the exploration of marine precious metal placers has traditionally been high due to the technical difficulties imposed by the environment and the remoteness of the sampling target. The objective was to reduce capital and operating costs of a drilling program through the development of a portable system incorporating drill compoments having a high power-weight ratio that could be deployed from work vessels of opportunity. A principal design requirement was to operate the system remotely from the sea floor with only flexible connections to the surface. This includes cable for deployment and retrieval and hoses for air supply and sample recovery, thus making the drill system semi-independent of the vessel&apos;s sea-induced motion. The prototype RPD underwent full operational test off Nome, AK in late summer 1988. It was deployed from the landing door of a modified LCT vessel, and rigged for a single pass of 5 m (16.5 ft). More than 50 holes were drilled in a wide variety of bottom materials typical of the off shore Nome submerged beach placers. The prototype RPD proved to be an overall success, recovering representative samples throughout the section in all but the heavy boulder ground. Compared with a conventional drill system on board that was assigned to a production drilling system, the RPD was capable of reliably sampling moderate ground less than 6 m (20 ft) in thickness, using a smaller crew and operating in higher sea conditions.

A major concern of mine fires is the heat generated ventilation disturbances which can move products of combustion (POC) through unexpected passageways. Fire emergency planning requires simulation of the interaction of the fire and ventilation system to predict the state of the ventilation system and the subsequent distribution of temperatures and POC. Several computer models were developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) to perform this simulation. The most recent, MFIRE, simulates a mine&apos;s ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influence such as varying outside temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output allows quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system. This paper describes recent USBM research to validate MFIRE&apos;s calculation of temperature distribution in an airway due to a mine fire, as temperatures are the most significant source of ventilation disturbances. Fire tests were conducted at the Waldo Mine near Magdalena, NM. From these experiments, temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire and compared with simulations from MFIRE.
