Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pHs without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35% to 38% P2O5, 0.8% to 1% MgO) with high recoveries (80% to 85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P2O5 and 0.8% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 76%. A concentrate obtained from the western US phosphate ore from Utah assayed 30% P2O5 and about 1% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 89%.

This paper discusses the application of Integrated Inertial/GPS technology for position determination of earthmoving equipment in an open-pit mine. Different GPS augmentation methodologies are introduced and discussed. Principles for the operation of the Applanix POS MC (Position and Orientation System for Machine Control) are also presented, together with test results conducted at the Twin Creeks Newmont mine, using the POS MC and Caterpillar’s CAES (Computer Aided Earthmoving System).

Valley-fill heap leaches built in steep terrain over low-friction angle liner system may be unstable even though analyses indicate stable ore slopes. This paper demonstrates the potential for massive heap failure using stability analyses which consider both heap slope and heap mass failure considerations. The computations presented also reveal the sensitivity of mass heap stability to liner friction angles.

The meta-systhetic A1 approach should involve the integration of digital and knowledge info, from qualitative to quantitative analysis, etc. Some algorithms of meta-systhetic technique such as ANN-ES and GA-ANN are introduced. A case study follows - mining conditions evaluation by meta-synthetic A1 methods, including: setting up the structure of evaluation indexes system, deciding their grade of membership by ANN-ES algorithm; determining the weight values of evaluation factors by GA-ANN algorithm; and developing the integrated evaluation model.

The use of crushed power station slags, both natural and coated, as granules for roof shingles shows some promise. Test shingles weathered for some years showed rust spotting and granule deterioration as serious problems. Chemical analysis on a particle-by-particle basis using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy system showed the wide variability of chemical composition of the granules within a given sample. Analysis of particles acting as sources of spotting within the weathered samples showed high iron contents but no rules could he developed for predicting the long-term stability of different compositions.

Analysts that utilize the classical distillation procedures for cyanide analysis are often frustrated by the poor reproducibility and repeatability of these techniques. Capital intensive business decisions and environmental management regulations are exas­perated by the fact that the EPA/ASTM approved cyanide deter­mination methods produce data of questionable quality. Reliable cyanide values are important in monitoring the effec­tiveness of the cyanide detoxification procedures. Efficiency and cost of gold and silver cyanidation recovery can also be improved by precise cyanide monitoring in the process itself.

The effect of reaction conditions on the desulfurization of oil-sand coke residues was studied. The variables investigated were temperature, reaction time, heat transfer resistance and mode of caustic soda addition. The results show that oil-sand coke desulfurization increases with temperature, reaction time and heat-transfer rate. In an oxidative environment, coke combustion during molten-caustic leaching (MCL) commences at temperatures above 500 °C. The mode of caustic addition has no effect on coke desulfurization.

The sampling of precious metal deposits entails inherent problems due to the low mineral abundances, high mineral specific gravities, skewed grade distributions and wide ranges of mineral particle sizes. Pull-out tests were conducted on cable bolts grouted with concrete, and cement paste. The influence of several parameters on the performance of these cables were studied under loading rates varying from very slow to relatively fast. These parameters include water-cement ratio, cable surface conditions, curing time and embedded length. In addition to being more economical, the results indicate that cables grouted with concrete have higher ductility and ultimate bond strength as compared to those with cement paste only.

The author has seen an increased use of shaft-mounted, right angle drive assemblies. These designs use the pulley shaft as its 'foundation" and can create significant overhung loads. To reliably perform, the pulley and shaft must be designed for these special requirements. This paper will focus on the development of overhung loads and their design effects. The concept and operation of novel shaft sinking systems utilizing roadheader-type cutter booms, including mucking, conveying, and hoisting installations, are described. Selection criteria, performance data, and economic considerations for various shaft excavators are presented. Various applications of this low-cost and flexible system for civil engineering and mining projects will be discussed. The cutter booms can work in both soft ground and competent rock. Furthermore, the novel excavator can operate in ground stabilized by grouting, cementing, and freezing. The flexible cutting system can be used both for excavation of shafts, foundation pits, slopes, and for tunneling (drifting).

This paper describes improvements in SAG and AG mill liner designs and their cumulative effect on wear life and mill availability. Routine procedures used by many SAG and AG mill operators to improve liner life are reviewed. Guidelines are provided for estimating the time required to replace worn liners along with practical methods to reduce downtime for liner replacement. Finally, the effects of mill operating conditions on liner wear life and breakage are considered.
