Rico is a small town in an old zinc mining district in a mountain valley of southeastern Colorado. Mine waste rock and mill “tailings” remained after over 100 years of mining in the area, leaving associated surface water and groundwater impacts. Atlantic Richfield Company is proposing an innovative approach, which uses lime precipitation and wetland ponds (semi-natural system, also called treatment lagoon in a wetland setting) to treat adit water in the Rico area. Besides using a non-conventional treatment approach, a non-conventional (non-Superfund) regulatory/administrative approach is being proposed. This paper will focus on the water treatment issues and solutions, as well as describing the innovative “watershed” regulatory process.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.

DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Several additional topics are suggested at the end of the paper.

A practical application of recent design concepts makes it possible to design a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. The design and operating parameters Of a column cell installation that replaced a conventional two stage copper flotation cleaning circuit at MAGMA COPPER COMPANY, SAN MANUEL, ARIZONA using these design concepts is described. A survey of other mineral processors using column cell technology was conducted. The results of this survey will also be discussed.

Diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s (PRL) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback. Such information is necessary for the preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 kW to 300 kW depending upon the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2 m high and 2.9 m wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment; measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor; and recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors, and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fire dynamics simulator.

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

An optimum method for selecting exploratory drilling locations has been developed. The process has been modelled as a highly non-linear programming problem subject to constraints. Solution involves an iterative algorithm which converges rapidly and procedures have been developed to distinguish between local and global optima. The algorithm has been implemented as an interactive computer program which allows the user to influence directly the solution process and to evaluate the effect of any manual adjustments to the optimal solution.

The EVINOS-MORNOS tunnel project with its 30 km of length is one of the longest hydraulic tunnel in the world realised with TBM method. The adverse geological conditions, the high cover and the short construction schedule were a great challenge for the successful construction of this tunnel. The paper will describe: the criteria adopted for the tunnel design, the selection of the construction methods and equipment, the productions of the 4 TBMs adopted and the comparison of the behaviour of the different type of TBMs in the various rock conditions, including special conditions, the characteristics of the adopted in situ and precast linings, a comparison between the foreseen and actual construction schedules, the contractual implications of realising a tunnel in such a severe and complex conditions.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines investigated a method of using inert gas to prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in auger highwall mining of coal. A combination of gasoline and diesel engine exhaust gases was introduced into the auger drill hole using a short section of pipe located at the collar. Gas samples were taken and analyzed on site with infrared detectors for oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide. Evacuated bottle samples were also taken and analyzed by gas chromatography at the Pittsburgh Research Center. These gas results were analyzed for explosibility. Personal exposure to carbon monoxide was also monitored. The highest methane level observed was 9.55 pct. The Inert gas levels, (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) were sufficiently high to prevent any ignition of the methane. Results showed that for all conditions during mining, gas concentrations were non-explosive. The maximum personal time weighted average sample for carbon monoxide was 20 ppm. This system provides a safe, inexpensive, simple method for preventing explosions during auger mining. INTRODUCTION The auger highwall mining method is an effective method to recover coal from a reserve when removal of the overburden by surface mining equipment becomes uneconomical. In this method of mining, a horizontal auger enters the coal seam from the surface mine bench under the highwall and the coal is drilled in a series of parallel holes. Historically, coal mined from the surface is relatively shallow, and over time, methane associated with the coal has dissipated through the surface. In most circumstances, little methane has been found associated with auger mining. However, mining technology has enabled surface mining of deeper reserves of coal. Furthermore, environmental constraints have forced the highwall extraction method to be used to remove coal under wetlands, further increasing the chances of encountering methane. Recently incidents of methane explosions at a few auger mining operations have resulted in injuries and increased testing for methane at the collars of auger holes. The fuel source of the reported explosions was not necessarily limited to methane, but may also have involved coal dust. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) met with the Bureau to discuss what technology might be available to enable the safe resumption of mining. The discussion included the difficulty of ventilating through the solid shafts of the augers, that steel bits probably created the ignition source, and that perhaps inerting the holes with low oxygen and high carbon dioxide concentrations from the machine's diesel exhaust was a potential solution. Considering the ventilation aspects of the problem, it was not clear If ventilation could be reliably established. If some degree of ventilation to the front of the mining head is achieved, it may combine with methane to bring the hole atmosphere from a rich, nonexplosive mixture to an explosive mixture. Furthermore, it may not prevent a dust explosion in such a mining configuration. Lack of access through the shafts of auger type mining machines further limits the ability to add water or air to cool bits to prevent an ignition source from developing. Either of these approaches would also be expensive. The process of mining coal In an inert atmosphere has been considered in the past, but to our knowledge, never implemented (Department of Interior, 1970). Clearly, implementation in underground mining would be more complicated. On a mine bench open to the atmosphere, however, adding inert gas to the mining head could provide a quick, feasible method to prevent explosions at auger highwall mining operations. Also the problem of how to move the inert gas to the cutting head of the machine had to be considered. Preventing explosions on auger mining machines using inert gas requires three primary considerations: first is the source of inert gas; second, placing the inert gas at the cutter head; and third, monitoring the hole atmosphere. Any gas source having an effective inert gas concentration of 34 volume pct or greater will prevent methane from Igniting (Zabetakis, 1965). Sources of inert gas considered for this application included liquid nitrogen, modified shipboard inert gas generators (for hydrocarbon shipping and transfer), jet turbine engine (Paczkowski, et. al., 1982), the auger's diesel engine and a gasoline engine. Operation cost, purchase cost and availability limited our testing to the diesel and gasoline engines. This work tested each engine, separately and combined. To ensure effectiveness, both company and enforcement personnel need to know how to monitor the condition of the inerted hole. Measurements at depth inside the hole are possible by remote sampling through rigid tubing, but this method is Impractical for routine monitoring. Continuous monitoring of the exhaust gas stream is an alternative. The U. S. Bureau of Mines evaluated an inert gas system at an auger mining operation at a surface mine near Owensboro, KY. Coal was mined from the Number 9 Coalbed in Henderson Co. KY. Tests were conducted in January and March of 1992.

While the charcoal in pulp (CIP) process was introduced to the mining industry many years earlier, it did not gain widespread recognition until 1973 when Homes take Mining Company installed a CIP circuit at their Lead, South Dakota plant. Since then, a number of mills have been put into production which utilizes activated charcoal for the recovery of precious metals. One of these plants was the Jerritt Canyon mill which Freeport Gold Company commissioned in 1981. It was during the time that the author was employed by Freeport Gold Company that the ideas and concepts presented in this paper were formulated.

Clearly there is a tremendous need for assistance in Eastern Europe since most industries must undergo major restructuring. The new governments face many dilemmas, the first task being to establish an order of priorities to deal with the numerous problems at hand. Issues such as the standard of living take low priority compared with market economy and ecological problems. The concept of a Comecon market is now virtually non-existent and trade in roubles ceased from 1991. From this time onwards countries were obliged to trade using free market prices. Governments must also avoid the economic mistakes of countries such as Poland with its high devaluation and lack of economic control and, if possible, contain inflation and unemployment. The privatization of Eastern European enterprises raises considerable difficulties, particularly for large corporations, employing anywhere from 50-100,000 people, which played a major role in the national economy. Whichever method is selected, however, still has to overcome the problem of lack of capital and evaluating the national property. For example, earnings represent only a small percentage of the value of these national industries and thus cannot convert to private ownership without foreign capital investment, either direct or as joint venture capital.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. "INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

In comparison to many mineral commodities, barite has a low unit value. It is mined and sold in low volumes in high-grade (90-98% BaSO4) forms to basically one industry that uses approximately 75% of the free world production. Based upon the above criteria, all factors must be considered in determining if a barite deposit is economical; such as, the type of deposit, mining and milling methods required, transportation to the markets, tariffs, local political conditions, etc. In other words, barite mines are made--not found. The length of this paper precludes any indepth discussion of geology, mining and metallurgy of barite. Most of this information can be found in data already published, such as D. A. Brobst's bulletin1 on the Barite Resources of the United States.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Environmental management systems (EMSs) have been in use for more than a decade. US mining companies are only just beginning to adopt EMSs. This lag is primarily due to lack of market forces and lack of evidence that EMSs add value over standard compliance programs. Several recent studies concluded EMSs improve environmental performance and reduce costs. State and federal regulatory agencies are using EMSs as an innovative tool to streamline the regulatory process and achieve continual environmental improvements. The climate is right for the mining industry to adopt an EMS model that improves environmental performance and takes advantage of new regulatory programs.

The world has seen unprecedented economic changes in recent years, starting with the stock market collapse of 2008 and the great recession that followed. With these changes, the mining industry, like others, has been forced to find ways to adapt to the shifting and sometimes volatile conditions. It has been a bumpy ride that has not been easy. Prices for most commodities have been in a decline in the past several quarters ? albeit still well above the average prices of 10 years ago ? as the costs of production have been on a steady incline for the past 10 years. Adding to the concern was the report in April that China, which had grown at an average pace of 10 percent/year, for the past decade, slowed to less than 8 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, catching many off guard. Even gold, once the safe haven for investors during rocky times, stumbled in April of this year, losing 7 percent of its value in two days. So what?s an investor to do ? and how can companies still attract financing? For the first time in 10 years, SME, in conjunction with the New York Local Section of SME, attempted to clear the waters of the mining finance sector with a conference focused on ?Current Trends in Mining Finance.? Held at City University of New York, Graduate Center, April 29-30, the two-day conference attracted 148 attendees and was intended for senior executives and mining industry specialists, covering a range of important topics and trends through 17 panels with about 50 speakers. The presentations came from representatives from some of the most influential companies in the mining and financial sectors, including Citi, Nomura, Societe Generale, Caterpillar, Newmont Mining Corp., Ernst & Young, Export Development Canada (EDC), KPMG, HSBC, Tocqueville Asset Management, BNP Paribas, Revett Minerals, Royal Gold, Environ and ERM.

Mining is a very important economical activity in Peru which has been recently developed without considering environmental aspects. Here, we show an experience at the Milpo mine, situated 4,200 meters above sea level; a mining company that has the value of being one of few from the last decade that is engaged in consolidating a model of environmental protection. The model includes aspects of contamination prevention and control, with bioindicators such as pasture cultivation, vegetables, forests, and hydrobiological species breeding. Socially, through means of development programs in natural areas, forestation and support to rural agriculture, together with environmental education, it is being demonstrated that it is possible to ensure tangible results in environmental conservation and the well-being of the populations around the mine.

  Underground positioning and communication are essential technologies for the future of underground mining operations. In contrast to other positioning and communication technologies such as wireless local area network (WLAN) or radio frequency identification (RFID), ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology provides significant benefits like accurate and robust positioning of mobile machine equipment, which is indispensable for future autonomous systems in underground mining processes, such as production, transportation and auxiliary operations. Among these technologies, UWB offers many advantages, including higher accuracy, robustness, resistance against noise and multipath effects, and low power consumption [1,2]. Underground automation and localization systems benefit from these advantages and use the technology to improve efficiency and safety. There are many studies being carried out on this technology to increase the results’ accuracy, energy sufficiency and more. Two robust UWB modules that were developed for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations are introduced. The measurement results of tests carried out in an underground mine are discussed as well to confirm the functionality of the system.
