The Bureau of Mines is glad to have this opportunity to discuss its present Coal Research Program and its significance to the industry with a group which has for many years been representative of the coal producing community. We believe we have a dynamic program that will help our vast coal resources to find their proper place in the U. S, economy. The present coal research activities of the Bureau are conducted in three organizational subdivisions: Minerals Research, Mineral Resource Development, and Health and Safety. All investigations are carried out in Bureau research facilities located in different sections of the country, Since its creation by the Organic Act of 1910 and subsequent amendments, the Bureau has worked closely with the coal industry--first by providing assistance in mine safety for anthracite and bituminous coal mining, and since that time, in providing information on conservation, safety, mining, preparation, and utilization.

When originally accepting the assignment, the Client had described the property as vacant land. A prior appraisal was later discovered and revealed that the property included a mineral rights appraisal. Further research disclosed an old dispute with a court ruling based on testimony by AIMA-certified experts. The present appraisal was therefore based on data from findings of the court with a fresh look at discount rate, absorption period, and residual land value. Fortuitously, the property subsequently sold on the market, while meeting all criteria for Fair Market Value. This provided insight into a market-based discount rate. Also, the absorption period could be adjusted in accordance with the current market conditions. The residual land value was minimal (based on comparable sales and projecting trends in market) as the property was affected by a flood zone and the surrounding development was sparse. PROPERTY HISTORY: A GREAT INVESTMENT Briefly, the subject property is located in the floodplain region of the San Jacinto River, a short river in southeastern Texas that flows into Galveston Bay, filled with sand and gravel. This location is on the north side of Houston, north of Beltway 8 on the east side of I-59.

Of all the technology available to the iron blast furnace operator, raw materials preparation is by far the most important. Superior raw materials have been basic to the success of the Japanese steel industry, and they are just as essential to the American steel industry in winning its competitive battle against foreign government subsidized steel imports. Therefore, the mine operator and the ore beneficiation engineer must strive to produce the highest quality raw materials possible to meet the precise demands of the modern blast furnace and steel plant.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for simulating the behavior of a longwall coal production system. The longwall simulator is a design simulator incorporating both deterministic and stochastic methods to calculate: (a) the size and density of support; (b) the cutting force, power requirements and haulage speed for the loader-shearer; (c) the conveyor size, speed and power requirements; and (d) delay generation at head and tail-gates and the longwall face.

The effect of metallic iron fines on froth flotation of a sulfide ore was examined by comparing the flotation results with and without iron fines present in the flotation feed. Mild steel and ceramic laboratory ball mills were used to grind 600 g sulfide ore charges. The mild steel ball mill generated approximately 4.6 g of iron fines (0.8% of the ore charge mass) when grinding to a product size of 80% passing 200 mesh (75 mm). When a low dosage of a weak xanthate collector was used in flotation, the impact of the iron fines on sulfide flotation was marked. Higher dosages of stronger xanthate collectors rendered the impact of the iron fines much less significant. Consumption of the collectors by the powdery iron fines is believed to cause the differences observed in the flotation results. A galvanic effect on flotation was not evident in this study. The impact of the iron fines on silicates depression was also examined.

Silicon is usually considered to be a useful metallic alloying element. To be more truthful, it is not a metal at all, but a semiconductor, whose electrical resistance (when pure) is high and decreases with temperature. We will join the metallurgists, at least for this paper, and refer to it as a metal. In its commercially available form, silicon is metallic in appearance, brittle, with a density of 2.33, less than that of aluminum. Silicon dioxide or quartz has a high heat of formation, which not only makes the metal a useful reductant for other materials, but also makes it difficult to reduce from its ore. The melting point is 1412°C, slightly less than steel, but substantially higher than aluminum or cast iron. The alloys of silicon with iron, usually called ferrosilicons, have some unique advantages. The melting points of most alloys are substantially below those of iron or silicon (Fig. 1). The two major compounds formed (FeSi and FeSi2) help somewhat in the reduction of silicon by their energies of formation, but the influence of these phases on the mechanical properties is more important. Four major groups of alloys are made -- silicon metal (>95% silicon), 75-85% ferrosilicon, 50% ferrosilicon, and silvery pig iron (12-22% silicon). The alloys between 50 and 65% silicon and between 25 and 40% silicon are normally avoided because of structural instabilities, presumably of the two compounds, leading to disintegration of the alloys on cooling.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) Tunnel is a world first in the use of tunnel space transmitting both road and water through the same spatial envelope. The unique aspect of the SMART project is that the highway decks are used periodically for the conveyance of water. This aspect of the project has posed its own technical challenges that have been overcome in the design stage of the work allowing the project to be taken forward to construction with confidence in the systems to be Installed in the tunnel.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Automatic control of fine coal cleaning circuits has traditionally been limited by a lack of sensors. Although several nuclear-based analyzers are available, none have seen widespread acceptance. In this investigation, image analysis is used for on-line determination of ash content in fine coal slurries. The ash content of a flotation tailings stream is correlated to the mean gray level of the slurry. Based on a 90% prediction interval, an analysis of sensor performance indicates an accuracy of 73 ± 4% ash over a range from 65-90% ash. While this result is comparable to existing nuclear-based analyzers, the video-based system is only a fraction of the cost. The sensor is currently installed at the Middle Fork preparation plant owned by Pittston Coal Company.

Geostatistical literature has been dealing with recoverable reserve estimation techniques for the last 30 years. There have been well established support correction techniques (Le. affine correction, indirect log-normal correction, etc.) to deal with volume -variance relationship globally in determining what will be the reserves above a cutoff grade during mining. Kriging has become the accepted technique in the mining industry for ore reserve estimation. Many large companies are using this method for gold and copper deposit modeling. In general, the estimates coming from kriging are smooth. The variances of the block grades estimated by kriging are often lower than the material that will be mined selectively. As a result, kriging tends to under estimate reserves at high cutoff grades and overestimates them in low cutoff grades. It is necessary to perform additional steps after kriging if the goal is to determine recoverable reserves at some cutoff and not the in situ resources. In the mining industry, it is becoming more and more common for the low grade heap leach projects to consider whether the higher grade portion of a deposit may be processed by a mill at higher profits. Similarly, a concentrator -refinery operations are implementing heap leach -SX-EW option for the lower grade portion of their deposit. These options are making it very critical to estimate the low and high end of the grade distributions more accurately. Ore reserve estimation is normally done by using widely spaced exploration data which has very small size support (Le. core samples). Selective mining is carried out on ore control that is based on closely spaced blasthole data normally averaged into larger polygons based on some cutoff grade. Estimated grades from exploration data need to reflect the variability of the grades of the selectively mined units if they are used without further adjustments to predict recoverable reserves.

This paper describes how a knowledge of inherent rock characteristics can aid the mining engineer in his design of a mining method for a massive domelike structure. The paper shows how the pertinent rock characteristics were measured and analyzed and how the data obtained was used for design purposes. This analysis was conducted in 1964 in a producing salt dome, since that time, mine management has tried certain of the recommendations for mine design changes. The results of such changes are presented.

Since its discovery, Cuba has been called the “Pearl of the Antilles.” The country remains that, albeit a little tarnished these days. In Havana, many of the buildings are being refurbished, while some new ones are under construction. Since 1991, the laws have been relaxed so that Cuba is developing a mixed economy of central control with free market. Joint venture agreements have been signed with businesses from many countries. This does not include the United States due to its embargo. But even these regulations have been relaxed some.

Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

NEW ROUTES - 63rd STREET CROSSTOWN The New Route construction along East 63rd Street in Manhattan began in 1969 with the East River tunnel connecting Manhattan and Queens. The 63rd Street Line, once in Queens, is planned to connect to another new route called the Queens By Pass or Super Express (See Exhibit 1) which would connect to the Queens Boulevard Line at Forest Hills. The purpose of the Queens By Pass was to alleviate subway congestion to and from the Borough of Queens, whose population had rapidly expanded during and after World War II. The existing Queens Boulevard subway lines (the "E" and the "F" trains) are almost filled to capacity at their terminal stations with passengers from Long Island. Passengers boarding trains enroute from the local Queens stations have difficulty boarding crowded trains, and, at times, cannot board the trains. The New Routes, thus, were to give additional train capacity into Manhattan and thereby relieve the crowded conditions along the Queens Boulevard corridor. PROFILE - METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The portion of the New Route passing east-west under East 63rd Street on Manhattan (See Exhibit 2) had to snake beneath intersecting structures running north and south, such as the Con Rail tracks below Park Avenue and the 80 ft deep Lexington Avenue Express track structure along Lexington Avenue. Vision 21 is a government/industry/academia cost-shared partnership to develop the technology basis for integrated energy plants that will, early in the 21stcentury, result in the deployment of ultra-clean plants that produce electricity and “opportunity” products. Vision 21 plants will use fossil fuel feed-stocks in combination with other domestic resources, e.g., biomass, municipal waste, and petroleum coke. Opportunity products could include transportation fuels, steam, high-value chemicals, synthesis gas, and hydrogen. Performance targets for Vision 21 plants, example plant configurations, and the key technologies that will be needed are described.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. is developing a full-scale pad injection program as part of the overall operational plan for the Valley Leach Facility. As part of the development process the mechanics of the injection methodology are evaluated in the context of physical injection measurements, outcome from geophysical monitoring, and gold leaching theory. The results indicate that hydraulic fracturing analogies advanced heretofore do not accurately describe injection phenomena in unconsolidated and noncohesive material typical of leach pads. A new interpretation is presented and extended to define operational strategies for maximizing gold production.

"Following a successful solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant demonstration in 2016, CYANEX® 600 has been used commercially to recover molybdenum from concentrate leach liquor since March 2017. Consistent with the piloting results, the commercial plant has achieved expected molybdenum recovery, a significant reduction in base consumption, and a step-change improvement in physical performance. This paper highlights the optimization activities and plant performance from startup through normal operation. INTRODUCTION Historically, tertiary amines have been the most commonly used extractant for molybdenum and rhenium recovery. Tertiary amines utilize a protonation of the ligand combined with an anion exchange mechanism as proposed in equations (1-2). R3N + H+ ???R3NH + (1) 4R3NH+ + Mo8O264- ???(R3NH+)4Mo8O264- (2) In addition to the transfer of Mo and Re, the amine transfers acid and other anions to the strip liquor. The undesirable transfer of other species increases base consumption during stripping, impacting operating costs. Additionally, lower solubility of molybdenum-amine complexes create operational challenges, resulting in diminished physical performance. The presence of colloidal Si in concentrate leach liquors and the formation of Pickering Emulsions adds to the physical plant performance challenges with the amine extractant. CYANEX® 600, a phosphinic acid-based extractant, uses a cation exchange mechanism proposed by equation (3). 2(H2R2) + MoO22+ ??(HR2)2MoO2 + 2H+ (3) The cationic exchange mechanism eliminates chemical transfer of acid and other anionic impurities and avoids some of the physical challenges of the amine extractant (emulsion and 3rd phase formation). In addition, the reagent offers high selectivity for Mo over Re, which may be desirable in certain moly pressure oxidation (POX) flowsheets. Alkali base (ammonium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, etc.) is used for molybdenum stripping. Therefore, reduction or elimination of chemical acid transfer from extract can significantly reduce base consumption in strip. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was completed to evaluate the use of CYANEX® 600 for molybdenum recovery at Freeport-McMoRan’s Bagdad operation. The test work and pilot demonstration confirmed a reduction in base consumption along with improved selectivity. In addition, the evaluation highlighted a step-change improvement in physical performance over the incumbent amine extractant. The decision was made to convert the commercial operation to CYANEX® 600 in March 2017."
