Injection leaching can improve leach ore recovery by displacing retained solutions, enhancing ore wetting, and creating new flow paths for efficient solution collection. This paper presents a method to assess the feasibility of injection leaching in finer-grained, potentially contractive ores (from a geotechnical slope stability perspective) using limit-equilibrium (LE) slope stability analysis and static deformation modeling. LE models were carried out by assigning peak undrained strengths to the heap leach ore material, and modeling the excess pore pressure induced during the injection leaching process using spatial function in Slope/W. Static deformation modeling was completed using the software Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC) to evaluate the potential for deformations due to the excess pore pressures induced during the injection leaching process. A constitutive model was used to represent the geomechanical behavior of the leached ore material, which enables the prediction of deformation and potential stability issues resulting from excess pore-pressure induced during injection leaching process. The two-pronged approach provides a practical method to assess geotechnical impacts and guide data-driven decisions in injection leaching operations.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the three-dimensional surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. In this paper, the authors discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining.

A spatial modeling technique based on the Bayesian neural network (BNN) is proposed. Incorporation of the Bayesian method for posterior probability of the output parameter helps calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimate. Parameters of the BNN model were selected using a grid search algorithm. The expected value and the variance of block support were calculated by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution at discretized points within the block. The BNN model was validated by applying it to the Walker Lake data set and comparing the results with ordinary kriging results. The comparison revealed that the proposed BNN method performs marginally better than ordinary kriging. The variance map is less smooth than with ordinary kriging, and the proportional effect is less in the BNN-based model than in the ordinary kriging model. The developed BNN model was applied to the Coho block of a placer gold deposit in Nome, AK. Results reveal that the BNN model is globally biased for the Coho block and underestimates the sample mean. The grade volume curve was developed by calculating the block mean and block variance after discretizing the block into a number of points and applying the BNN model to each discretized point.

The state of the lithium mineral industry is closely linked to the performance of the glass and ceramic industries and to the overall economy. Demand for the glass/ceramic products in Europe, Asia and North America remained strong during 1999. This was due to a slight improvement in the economy during the latter half of the year. Consequently, demand for lithium minerals was firm, with a positive outlook. The major economic minerals for lithium are spodumene, petalite and lepidolite. The latter was once the primary mineral. But its importance hasdeclined since the 1960s. The lithium industry consists of two different segments: •The lithium minerals segment mines from hard-rock deposits and physically processes the material to high-grade concentrates. •The lithium chemicals and metal industry segment. The major feedstock for specialty lithium chemicals was previously high-grade spodumene ore converted to lithium carbonate. However, most lithium carbonate is now sourced from salars in North and South America.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of the adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

Recent catastrophic failures of heap leach facilities have revealed fundamental weaknesses in prevailing design paradigms, modeling toolkits, and oversight practices that continue to treat heaps as static, free-draining earthworks despite compelling evidence to the contrary. The core proposition advanced in this paper is that heap materials are intrinsically dynamic: their structure, permeability, and shear strength evolve under the sustained influence of irrigation, climate, and geochemical reactions, and these timedependent changes can precipitate abrupt transitions from granular stability to flow-like failure. Drawing on investigations of recent failures at Çöpler Mine in Turkey and Eagle Gold Mine in the Yukon, alongside earlier incidents in Peru, Arizona, Nevada, and Chile, the analysis identifies a recurrent sequence driving catastrophic behavior: progressive weathering elevates fines and suppresses permeability; drainage systems designed for initial conditions become overwhelmed; pore pressures rise heterogeneously within the heap; and static liquefaction initiates rapid mass movement with long runout. Current guidance, including ICOLD and ANCOLD frameworks and ASTM testing standards, provides a necessary foundation but is tailored to tailings and conventional soil mechanics. These documents offer insufficient direction for characterizing timedependent material degradation, quantifying rheology of weathered ore, and modeling post-failure mobility. To address this deficit, the paper proposes an integrated framework combining enhanced characterization, multi-physics numerical modeling that couples hydro-geochemical processes with large-deformation mechanics, and comprehensive monitoring with Trigger Action Response Plans. The conclusion argues for a heap-specific standard that embeds these elements from concept to closure, aiming to materially improve safety performance and reduce the likelihood and consequences of future failures.

The isotopic variations of lead from Mississippi Valley galenas have long been used to place constraints on the sources of the lead, and on the residence the of the lead in crustal reservoirs prior to its emplacement in the Mississippi Valley province. Similar studies based on strontium isotope variations in gangue minerals associated with the lead-zinc sulphides have been neglected until Haden's (1) study of such minerals from several localities in northwestern Ohio. His work revealed two things about the mineralization. Firstly, it shoved that the average isotope composition of lead from galenas from northwestern Ohio lies on the anamalous lead line characterizing Mississippi Valley-type leads, albeit at the least radiogenic end of the entire data array. This confirm earlier assignments of the Ohio mineralization as Mississippi Valley-type (Hey1 and others (2)). Secondly, Haden (I) showed that the strontium in the calcite, strontianite and fluorite is broadly similar in isotopic composition to the strontium in the host Silurian to Devonian marine carbonates within which these minerals arc emplaced. He concluded that the mineral strontium my have been very locally derived, from the carbonate hosts.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

Although this paper has been entitled "Design of Embankments for Tailings Ponds and Waste Dumps," a better title might have been "Site Selection and Design Planning for Tailings Ponds and Waste Dumps," The procedures normally followed in performing the engineering calculations based upon the measured soil properties will not be detailed. Instead, we shall look at the subject in broader perspective which considers the environmental factors and the fundamental design principles. Disposal of waste materials left from the extraction and processing of mineral deposits has become, in recent years, an important engineering consideration for mine and mill operators. Land occupancy and land values almost everywhere are increasing at a rapid rate. So is the size of mine and mill waste dumps, thanks to our advancing technology in mineral beneficiation. Mining companies are being pressured to "clean up" their operations, both literally and in a safety hazard sense. Once, long ago, the miner could use any convenient location to get rid of his mine waste and mill tailings without being concerned over possible infringement on the rights and well-being of the public. Today, however, he must pay close attention to these matters if he wishes to avoid liability suits and the unfavorable reaction of civic groups as well as local and regional government. Most operators keenly sense their increased responsibility, not only because they are legally vulnerable, but because they realize the necessity for sharing space harmoniously with the rest of society.

SALA MAGNETICS, INC. is now operating a 15 tph continuous high gradient magnetic separator, the SALA-HGMS® Mark III Carousel, as part of a complete mineral processing pilot plant installed at Sala's Cambridge headquarters. The Mark III can generate a maximum magnetic field of 18 kG making it possible to process even weakly magnetic, finely ground ores and ore tailings on a continuous basis at the performance level achieved in Sala's cyclic high gradient magnetic separators. Test results on iron ores, clay, and decoppering of molybdenum concentrate will be discussed. Bench scale tests have been performed on all of these materials using the SALA-HGMS® Model 10-15-20 Cyclic Magnetic Separator. A direct correlation may be made between cyclic and carousel results. Sala's Mark III Carousel high gradient magnetic separator is designed to permit scale-up to machines capable of processing two hundred (200) tons of ore per hour and more.

A research program is currently in progress at the University of British Columbia to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been tested. Their evaluation consisted of lab testing at the University of British Columbia, United States Bureau of Mines (Spokane) and trial installations at Detour Lake, Winston Lake, and Myra Falls Mines. A market analysis of cable bolts within the Canadian mining industry has been completed. Fibre reinforced polymer composites have a high potential as cable bolt reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to steel cable bolting.

In creating a surface mine design, a complicated series of events may be required to meet both mining and environmental objectives. Envisioning the mine at every step of the operation can greatly assist the engineer to identify design and operational problems that might otherwise go undetected until the field operations reach the problem. Providing operations a visual progression of the mine ensures that critical designs generated by the engineer are understood and effectively communicated to operations. Providing the plan as electronic data to the surveyors and/or on-board GPS systems can ensure successful implementation of the design. This paper discusses using computer technology to generate a virtual mine plan and strategies to consider when communicating a virtual mine plan through electronic and paper formats.

This paper discusses the evolution of a modeling methodology for explaining price behavior in the aluminum industry. Three generations are described, each utilizing as a foundation a microeconomic stages-of-processing approach. The second generation represents an improvement over the initial version, by incorporating more rigorous specifications of energy cost, and market strength (demand-supply balance) as well as endogenous treatment of market strength. International linkages across prices, costs, and markets, are the major extensions in the third generation. The discussion covers theoretical considerations, data problems and limitations, and model specifications. Simulation and forecasting properties of the models are also addressed.

Introduction Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name Split Sets, are presently under research and development by Ingersoll-Rand Company and Dr. James J. Scott, inventor. Conceived in 1953, the system is a patented process undergoing extensive field and laboratory testing. The author has published papers on the Split Set System earlier (References 4, 5, 6) The Split Set System holds promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The system produces an interior reinforcement to a rock mass which: 1. Is simple in its concept. 2. Adjusts to the degree of restraint needed to match rock properties. 3. Provides a yieldable support and, later, a more rigid support as it is needed. 4. Pre-loads the rock in compression to increase stability. 5. Is a full-contact, fully tensioned device to resist rock loads. 6. Minimizes the stress concentration effects inherent in many interior support devices. 7. Improves safety for the miner. 8. Is cheaper than a grouted system. 9. Offers the rock mechanics engineer an opportunity to design in a fashion not before possible.

The first commercial installation of the Dashaveyor has recently been completed at the White Pine Mine in Northern Michigan. After four years of development work, including prototype testing, and pilot plant operation, this new and unique system is being tested under operational conditions. Many of you may be familiar with the concept through numerous articles which have appeared in the technical press. But this discussion of the system will be simplified and less time consuming with the presentation of a portion of a film showing the Dashaveyor in actual operation. After the movie, I will show some slides which will supplement and clarify it and hopefully lay the basis for questions you will undoubtedly wish to ask.
