During the 1980’s, laboratories opened throughout the United States to serve the analysis needs of a rapidly growing asbestos abatement industry. The samples analyzed were either collected during the abatement of known asbestos-containing materials or were suspect asbestos-containing construction materials. Many asbestos analysts received minimal training and used analytical protocols that were industry specific. False positives (reporting a sample as containing asbestos when none is present) went unnoticed or had minor repercussions. The mindset of the industry was to err on the conservative side – it would be better to identify a non-asbestos fiber as asbestos than visa versa. With growing public awareness of the health hazards of asbestos, other materials began to be tested for asbestos content. Rock and ores began to be tested for naturally occurring asbestos by these laboratories using the same protocols or an in-house protocol. Analysts were given no additional training and accreditation, in most cases, it was not required. With no consistency in sample collection, testing protocol or expertise in analysis, significant discrepancies in final results can be expected. If we further complicate this scenario with misidentification of naturally occurring look-a-likes for asbestos, expensive false positives are likely. To avoid the repercussions of misidentification of naturally occurring chrysotile asbestos from look-a-like fibers in rock and ores, correct sampling and analysis protocols with more stringent scientific diagnostic criteria are needed.

The Montana Tunnels Mine was mined out to a depth of 900 feet at the end of 1999. The first signs of instability were recognized in 1996 along the upper slope area of the northwest sector when the pit was mined out to a depth of approximately 500 feet. To extend the life of mining operations, it has been proposed to extend and steepen the northwest highwall to a depth of 1000 feet. Slope stability analyses were carried out using the UDEC software program to assess the stability and deformation of the proposed highwall design. Back analysis of an instability in 1997 along the upper slope section and highwall deformation to date has indicated reasonable agreement with the observed mode of failure and displacement monitoring results. The results of detailed analyses of the proposed highwall design have indicated very limited additional deformation, further development of tension cracks is unlikely and large-scale instability is not expected to occur. A total of 40% of additional mining has been completed and ongoing displacement monitoring to date has confirmed very limited additional movement and no further tension crack development.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. Barite, the sulfate of barium, occurs in many geological environments in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. The commercial deposits of barite may be classified into three major types. 1. Vein and cavity fillings that occur in rock fractures, along bedding planes, and in various solution structures. 2. Bedded deposits in which barite occurs as the principal mineral or cementing agent in stratiform bodies in sedimentary rocks. 3. Residual deposits occurring in unconsolidated material formed by the weathering of preexisting rocks. The geologic characteristics of each type of deposit are of fundamental importance to the successful search, development, and economic use of barite deposits.

"INTRODUCTION During the last decades, many underground facilities for the storage of hydrocarbons have been excavated worldwide and the technology is fully mature. Similarly to other underground structures, the initial basic design has to be adapted along with the work progress, in order to cope with the actual site conditions and in particular the geology, hydrogeology and associated rockmass quality. In addition, Client’s or underground Contractor’s constraints (such as resources availability, schedule or cost impact) may vary from design to construction and require last minute adjustments. Engineers are required to introduce flexibility and anticipation of unexpected situations (similar to the above-mentioned) while conceiving large underground facilities. Although most of the cases require only minor adaptations, crucial parts of the facility have sometimes to be considerably modified and reviewed. This article will present four cases evidencing how the design of one of these essential structures - the concrete plug – has been adjusted during site implementation without impairing the initial performances. Hydrodynamic containment The product containment of the unlined caverns discussed here is ensured by the principle of hydrodynamic containment. A permanent water flow is naturally or artificially maintained with an orientation toward the storage cavern and then, neither product-tight membrane nor lining are required. The hydraulic gradient (and the associated water flow lines), being directed from the surrounding mass toward the cavern, prevent from outward migration of the product. If the hydraulic gradient is not sufficient or if the water table is evidencing instability, water can be artificially injected into the rockmass through purpose-built boreholes, drilled from dedicated galleries. This water injection system, called the water curtain, is generally located several tens of meters above the level of the cavern. This principle is illustrated here after."

"Coal mines opting for longwall mining or its variations rely on the main and tail gates for production. Stability of these entries or crosscuts is crucial in coal mining operations. Roof or strata failure can be fatal, may lead to property loss and delay in production. Failure of the gates depends upon many factors including the mining method, panel dimensions, pillar width, mine depth, caving rate, dimensions of gates and roof strength properties. In Pakistan coal is mined through a variation of longwall mining method with almost no mechanization while using timber as a primary support. Timber support as chock is very useful in coal mines especially in overhanging face. Similarly gate entries and coal faces are supported by chock supports throughout their length. In this paper the stability of the longwall gate is assessed for a typical coal mine in Pakistan by using finite element code. Numerical modelling considerations for gate entries are discussed. A model parametric study is performed for key factors. The results showed that the existing mining practice is not suitable and there is a need to review the mining approach. INTRODUCTION Main and tail gate entries leading to longwall mining panel play a crucial role in production cycle. Failure of any of these may lead to loss of life, property and production delays. The stability of gate entries depends primarily on the nature of loading and stresses incurred. It is relatively easier to assess the ground response to production for common longwall mining panel. In thin-seam coal mines the gate entries are generally supported throughout their length by timber made chock supports. The tailgates receive huge deformations and stresses during the mining and backfilling cycle. The chock supports are required to take care of rock falls leading to blockage of entries causing production delays and loss of capital. A number of supports are available for supporting the gate entries (Hoek and Brown 1980; Brady and Brown 1985). The support system can be selected based on load-deformation characteristics including the yielding behavior, pre- and post-yielding behavior (Barczak, 2003). The principal of support selection is that the support characteristics must match the ground response in order to maintain the gate entries (Mucho, et al., 1999). It has been observed that thin-seam mining (<1 m) is very challenging and it is necessary to develop an understanding of ground mechanics before the selection of an efficient support system Dolinar (2003). The chock supports have been tested for load-deformation characteristics in the laboratory (Barczak 2003). But the ground and support interaction, response and loads must be assessed for individual site. This can be accomplished by in-situ testing and observations at few locations. The generated data is generally insufficient for complete understanding. Numerical models can combine the data generated in the laboratory and on-site to fulfill the requirements."

The U.S. produces about 34 percent of the world&apos;s aluminum yet must import 90 percent of the raw materials needed. There are abundant resources of aluminum-bearing minerals such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, shale, and dawsonite, but none of the numerous processes proposed for recovering alumina from them has yet proved economically competitive with the Bayer process using imported bauxite. To help develop an economically viable process for utilizing these resources, the Bureau of Mines is testing on a common basis several proudsing processing techniques. New improvements and approaches developed by industry and the Government are being evaluated on a mall scale to obtain enough information on which to form a judgment regarding the best processes for commercial adoption. A continuous miniplant having a feed rate of about 70 pounds per hour is being operated now to investigate the nitric acid process for recovering alumina from clay. Parts of this plant will be used subsequently for work on other processes for recovering alumina from clay, anorthosite, alunite, and dawsonite. Initial results of the operation and plans for the overall project will be discussed.

Introduction This paper attempts to summarize some of the major criticisms of drug testing. Eight problems with drug testing are discussed. These are: • It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know, • It is a distortion of priorities, • Drug use is not known to be associated with increased risk of occupational injuries, • Drug testing is proposed as a dangerously simplistic solution to poorly conceived problems, • In the absence of safeguards, it is unacceptably inaccurate, • In the absence of treatment commitments and confidentiality protection for persons dependent on drugs, it is an unethical practice of medicine, • Drug testing is an invasion of privacy, and • It will have a negative effect on treatment of persons with drug or alcohol dependencies. Employers&apos; need to know It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know. It is reasonable for employers and fellow workers to want to know if workers are functionally impaired (intoxicated) while on the job. Drug testing does not measure impairment. It measures the concentration of drug metabolities in urine or blood. Unlike measurements of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), drug metabolites are not correlated with impairment or intoxication. They indicate only drug use in the one to two weeks before a urine sample. And, in some instances, they indicate chronic use. Impairment caused by drug use, on the other hand, occurs immediately and declines rapidly within hours. Drug metabolites may linger for days afterwards. Drug metabolite concentrations in urine are a function of (Morgan, 1984; Schartz and Hawks, 1985; MMWR, 1983): • the amount and purity of drug consumed before taking the test, • when the drug was consumed, • whether the person was a chronic user, in which case a certain amount of drug metabolites would be stored in body fat and slowly released, • the person&apos;s metabolic rate, and • for metabolites in urine, any dilution effects of urine. ABSTRACT Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models. INTRODUCTION There are many definitions of virtual reality (VR) that include various levels of immersion and features [1]. Some definitions refer to specific technologies [2], while others are limited to visualization [3]. For this paper, a more general definition of VR will be adopted. VR is defined as the collection of hardware and software that interactively engages users and stimulates their senses within a synthetic or virtual environment. From a hardware standpoint, this can include anything from a phone to a head-mounted display (HMD) to a large-scale theater as well as speakers, microphones, haptic sensors, and interaction devices. The software used to create virtual environments (VEs) generally includes a game engine, custom software components and libraries, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical assets. Recent hardware and software advances have increased the fidelity and availability of VR. New and improved technologies including HMDs and high-resolution monitors and projectors can display sharper, more detailed visualizations. For example, in the past five years between the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) and the HTC Vive Pro (2018), there was a three-fold increase in resolution along with a 50% increase in the refresh rate. Furthermore, despite early claims that low-cost VR technology was readily available [4], computational power has not been sufficient to handle the large amount of data generated by these systems [5]. In the past five years, however, rendering speeds have more than doubled and memory has more than tripled [6], allowing these visualizations to be incorporated into higher-complexity and -fidelity VEs that more closely mirror the real world. Similarly, software capabilities have also significantly improved through game engine advancements and feature development. In the past several years, game engines have added and improved features such as physics, lighting, platform support (e.g. Android), and asset development integration. Some of the current leading commercial game engines are Amazon Lumberyard, CryEngine, Unreal, and Unity, but this can quickly change as is evident in the literature [7, 8].

Materials produced in quarries have been used for different intentions such as concrete and cement raw material, asphalt and embankment aggregates, railway ballast. Especially in cement manufacturing, the chemical composition and the uniformity of the raw materials play a strategic role in the economy and quality of the cement process. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve uniformity and desired chemical composition and maintain these at all production stages according to the type of cement produced. To achieve this goal the production planning and pit design play an essential role. This paper briefly outlines the production optimization of cement raw materials in a quarry in Istanbul western part of Turkey. For the purpose it was used the 3D ore body modeling and the geostatistical techniques. The variation of chemical components (%CaO, %Al2O3, %Fe2O3 etc.) and quality control parametres (LSF, SR, AR and etc.) obtained from the quarry were determined. Then the values of unknown chemical components and quality control parameters in the ore body were estimated using Kriging which is one of the geostatistical interpolation methods. The open pit design was also created by specifying wall slopes and taking into consideration of the grade distributions of the benches. The most important revolution in the paper is investigating the effects of the block dimensions in block modelling which is important for reserve estimation. The other important point in the study is using the different range values in variogram analysis for determination optimal reserve estimation. n this study, the effects of two parametres on reserve and waste amount estimation were determined according to CaO% distribution. The study was pointed out that the changing of the two parameters are very important for the optimal mine planning and environmental considerations.

A multimedia tutorial illustrating the geology and mineral resources of Gulf Coast salt domes has been developed as a pilot project for a course on Texas geology and resources at the University of Texas at Austin. The principal objective of the tutorial is to educate students with limited background in geological sciences about a major local geologic feature and its geologic and economic significance. The content of the tutorial represents materials generally covered in 4 hours of lecture and laboratory instruction. These materials are presented using a flattened hierarchy of topics, each accessible from a central menu, including salt-dome history, salt tectonics, anhydrite and calcite cap rocks, mineral resources, and geophysical character. Information concerning salt-dome geology is communicated using interactive software; sound and animation are used throughout to reinforce key concepts. Visual aspects include field views, hand specimens, and photomicrographs that were digitized from slides. Illustrations were created using a graphics program or scanned from available archives. Each visual element has an accompanying explanation, which in many cases is linked to other parts of the tutorial. Navigation is accomplished using hyper-links or a set of unobtrusive buttons. The program includes a glossary of the major minerals associated with salt domes available as a pull-down menu and digitized video footage of the Gulf of Mexico sea floor to illustrate the active environment of the formation of the salt-dome cap rock. In addition, a group of interactive questions is presented to assess the level of mastery. Technical aspects were accomplished using a Power Macintosh ? 7100AV and a variety of commercial software. Actual linking of information was done with Authorware? 3.0 Educational, an icon-based, multimedia authoring program. Graphic illustration was done with Adobe Illustrator ?; image processing was accomplished using Adobe Photoshop?; video was cap¬tured, edited, and compressed using Adobe Premiere ?. The interactive nature of the project was designed with regard to future means of dissemination, especially on the World Wide Web. This tutorial serves as a template to build additional modules covering the entire course. A modular approach to the coding of the project and extensive self-documentation should ensure the viabil¬ity of the project by allowing other workers with moder¬ate computer skills to complete other lessons within the curriculum framework.

It is a generally accepted and widely discussed fact that the world in general, and the United States in particular, face a shortage of energy at the present time which will become worse in the future. There is, however, no sign of a similar concensus as to the actions which would prevent or overcome this expected shortage. An immense variety of solutions has, however, been put forward, ranging from the purely political to the outer fringes of sophisticated technology. One resource which surprisingly is often only cursorily included in this discussion is the immense known petroleum reserve lying within the United States. When this subject is discussed, indeed, it is usually in the context of the improvements in production or new discovery rate that could be expected to result from possible politico-economic actions that would raise the real price obtained for domestic crude. This interest in the potential for improved domestic production is undoubtedly justified, but very little attention is normally drawn to the fact that even under the most favorable policy framework the majority of the oil that has been, or will be, discovered will remain in the ground due to the inherent limitations of production through surface wells.

Introduction In 2007, Newmont Mining Corporation will begin construction of a milling and cyanidation leaching circuit for the Yanacocha site in Peru. Ore to be processed in the circuit contains a relatively high level of cyanide-soluble copper, and as a result, leach solutions are expected to contain elevated levels of copper and WAD cyanide. As the means of controlling copper levels in leach solution, a circuit will be installed to precipitate copper sulfide from barren solution using sodium hydrosulfide. In addition, a circuit will be installed to recover cyanide from barren solution, with recovered cyanide to be returned to the leaching circuit and treated solution to be utilized as make-up in existing heap leaching facilities. As needed to support design of the copper precipitation and cyanide recovery circuits, pilot testing was conducted in 2005 to determine preferred operating conditions and evaluate the performance of the processes. This paper presents results from the pilot testing where 99% copper reduction was achieved and 95% to 98% cyanide recovery was achieved.

Fifteen samples of chert from seven localities in Ohio were tested for potential durability and reactivity in concrete. The tests determined are porosity, pore-size distribution, relative degree crystallinity, specific surface area, and degree of dissolution according to the ASTM C289-71, Potential Reactivity of Aggregates, Chemical Methods. The results of these tests were compared with petrographic, electron optical, physical-chemical, and engineering properties of the chert samples. Based on these tests, the important properties that affect the durability and reactivity of chert in concrete were observed to be: (1) porosity, (2) pore-size distribution or pore spectra, (3) relative degree of crystallinity, (4) grain size, (5) specific surface area, (6) impurities, and (7) amount and species of quartz present-all of which are functions of original composition, time (geologic age), depth of burial, tectonics, and diagenesis. Preliminary results of this study indicated that the geologic history and physical-chemical properties of chert vary from one sample to another, and any one or combination of these parameters affect the performance of the chert in concrete. These complex interrelationships are difficult to ascertain; if the performance of the chert in concrete is to be predicted, it is necessary to study in detail this enigmatic material.

Flotation pulps with boron minerals such as colemanite and borax using primary amine collectors, e.g. dodecylamine, exhibit collector precipitation above a critical pH depending on the amine concentration. This was earlier attributed to the formation of a mine hydroborate. However, results from this current study indicate that the precipitate is dode-cylamine, rather than dodecylamine hydroborate. A systematic study involving solubility, zeta potential, microflotation, adsorption, and surface tension measurements is presented to elucidate the role of a mine precipitates in boron flotation systems.

Today, I would like to talk about ways to maximize the efficiency of surface coal operations. I doubt I will present any startling new ideas, but my comments may, hopefully, stimulate some conversation today and later back at your own operations. Strip mining is a very old technique used by ancient societies. Only with the coming of the machine age in the early twentieth century did we attempt to increase the magnitude of our operations. The industry, as we know it today, really only got started in the early 1900s with the advent of steam shovels. In the first portion of this presentation, I will attempt to show that we have, in many cases, not changed the basics of strip mining, only the scale. In doing so, quite often we have complicated the operations to the point of being unmanageable and unprofitable.

"Canopy air curtains (CAC) on roof bolting machines have been proven, through laboratory and field investigations, to protect miners from respirable dust, preventing dust overexposures. Another desired application is to develop a CAC that is mounted in the compartment of a shuttle car to protect the operator from dust. The challenges faced with this design include mine ventilation rates in tandem with the shuttle car tram speeds, causing cab airspeeds that may exceed 600 fpm, as found in this study of a central Appalachian underground coal mine. Prior research and laboratory testing indicate that successfully protecting a miner in high air velocities is difficult to achieve because the clean air from the CAC is unable to penetrate through the high velocity mine air and make it to the breathing zone of the operator. During this investigation by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), dust concentrations of the shuttle car operator were measured. Also, air velocities experienced by the operator were measured using a recording vane anemometer. Results from the survey indicate that the highest exposure to respirable dust (2.22 mg/m3) occurred when the shuttle car was loading at the continuous miner, where there was an average airspeed of 157 fpm. While tramming, the operator was exposed to 0.77 mg/m3 of respirable dust with an average airspeed of 203 fpm. This study indicates that a CAC system can be designed to greatly reduce an operator’s exposure to respirable dust by providing clean air to the operator, since the majority of the operator’s dust exposure occurs in air velocities less than 200 fpm. INTRODUCTION NIOSH has issued a contract (#200-2015-63485) with Marshall University and J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Salem et al., 2016) to develop a canopy air curtain (CAC) for coal mine shuttle cars. The proposed design maintains a similar design to the roof bolter CAC by providing filtered air via a blower over the operator. The plenum, which will provide the uniform airflow over the operator, is anticipated to be built into the shuttle car canopy. One of the main interferences with a CAC is ventilation airflow perpendicular to the plenum airflow [Engel et al. 1987]. This ventilation airflow, if the velocity is significantly high, can shear the downward flow from the plenum. The shear caused by the ventilating airflow can reduce the effectiveness of the CAC by either disrupting the downward flow or allowing contaminated mine air into the CAC zone of protection."

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

The expansion of surface mining has led to the development of very large off-highway trucks currently capable of hauling payloads in excess of 290t. Mine haul roads have historically been designed empirically, relying heavily on local experience; the trend in increasing truck size will thus render the current pavement systems inadequate. Since truck haulage costs can account for 10%-50% of the total costs incurred by a surface mine, not only would the maintenance costs of existing roads of inadequate design increase, vehicle operating and maintenance costs would also increase prohibitively. There is thus a need for improved design technologies encompassing the construction and management techniques of mine haul roads, appropriate for the wheel loads of vehicles now in use. The aim of the paper is to present the different components of a mine haul road design and management system and to demonstrate the value of its application through case studies. The system has been applied at several South-African surface mines and distinct benefits have been derived. The improved structural design of a new road resulted in a 29% saving in construction costs and also provided better service, whilst the optimal selection and management of wearing-course materials provided better functionality at lower total transportation operating costs.

LKAB owns and operates two of the largest underground mines in the world in Northern Sweden. In Malmberget, with a production capacity of about 30,000 t/day of iron ore, the current main 815 m haulage level is rapidly approaching the end of Its life and plans are being made for its replacement on the 1000 m level. Due to the separation of the orebodies, trucks have been chosen for transporting the ore from the orepasses to the crushers. The trucks currently in use have a capacity of 120 tons. To increase the efficiency of the loaded haul, the new main level will have a favorable slope from the drawpoint locations to the crushers. From the new level the crushed ore will be transported by conveyor to the 815 m level for hoisting to the surface. The paper discusses the planned mining and transportation system.
