Pneumatic flotation is rapidly becoming accepted in the main stream of flotation techniques. Imhoflot is a pneumatic flotation process that in recent years has undergone progressive development. It combines short flotation times with excellent selectivity by employing intense pre-aeration and dispersion. K+S GmbH (K+S), Germany, has installed a complete Imhoflot flotation plant at its Sigmundshall plant. The plant treats hard salt consisting of sylvine, halite, anhydrite and kieserite. The reason for selection was that Imhoflot achieves the required grades of plus 60 weight percent K2O whilst offering lower operating costs than conventional flotation installations.

In this article we present Sustainable Value, a valuation methodology to assess sustainable value creation of companies. Sustainable Development posits that decisions must not only take into account economic capital but also natural and social capital. Sustainable Value, the methodology presented in this paper, borrows the idea from financial economics that the return on capital has to cover the cost of the capital. Capital costs are determined as opportunity costs, i.e. the forgone return that would have been created by an alternative investment. By expanding the well established logic of the valuation of economic capital in financial markets to also cover natural and social capital we provide a methodology that allows an assessment of the most efficient allocation of economic, natural, and social capital for sustainable value creation in companies. We demonstrate the practicability of the methodology by the valuation of the sustainability performance of British Petroleum (BP).

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT Geographic Setting The Kops II plant is a pumped storage scheme of the hydroelectric power producer ‘Vorarlberger Illwerke AG’ which is currently under construction in the Austrian Province of Vorarlberg. The plant is located at the end of the Montafon valley and will be fed with water coming from the Silvretta mountain range (Figure 1) Description of Plant The Kops II plant shall be operated as a pumped storage plant with three highly flexible and quickly controllable power generating units. Each unit shall have a capacity of 150 MW and shall be equipped for both turbine operation and pump operation. The Kops II plant uses the existing Kops Lake as upper storage reservoir and the existing Rifa balancing reservoir as lower storage reservoir. All major plant components of the Kops II scheme are located below ground. Total investment costs areapprox. 360 million Euro. Construction Lots The construction works for the Kops II plant, which were subdivided into three lots, were launched in September 2004. It is planned that the first power generating unit shall go on line in the year 2007. The completion of the overall project and the operation start-up of the second and third unit are envisaged for the year 2008. Lot 1—Pressure Tunnel. The 5.5-km-long pressure tunnel forms the connection between the Kops Lake and the beginning of the pressure shaft. The tunnel was excavated by the use of a double-shield TBM. Lot 2—Pressure Shaft and Surge Chamber. The approx. 1.1-km-long pressure shaft was excavated by TBM, advancing from bottom to top. Featuring an inclination of80%, the pressure shaft overcomes a difference in height of approx. 700 m. Lot 3—Power House Cavern and Tailrace Structure. The power house cavern, which is being built approx. 150 m inside the mountain, forms the core of this plant. The power house is designed to accommodate three power generating units, and the transformer cavern is forseen to accommodate three transformer units. The tailrace structure serves the purpose of conveying the water to the lower storage reservoir during turbine operation and as water intake during pump operation (Figure 2).

(1) A great deal of experimentation has been carried out by the Wet Process Cement Manufacturers in connection with additives which make possible the production of a pumpable slurry at reduced moisture contents. We ourselves have made dozens of tests both at Laramie, Wyoming and Monolith, California. (2) The viscosity or pumpability of a slurry at a definite moisture content and fineness seems to depend on two basic phenomena. One is the physical structure of the raw material itself, which on fine grinding may or may not be excessively hydrophilic (water adsorptive). Usually crystaline or glassy raw materials are non- hydrophilic. The fine grained amorphous raw materials such as shales and clayey limestones very frequently are, however. (3) The second basic phenomenon affecting the hydrophilic tendencies of the raw material is the presence of certain soluble salts, especially gypsum and small amounts of alkalin carbonates or oxides. (4) Various soaps, and phosphates can be used to produce a pumpable slurry of low moisture content when using hydrophilic raw materials as well as can other proprietary materials such as certain long chain carbon compounds. Too frequently however, the price of such additives in conjunction with the amount required prohibits their use in the cement industry.

Surface mining regulations together with mine and reclamation planning require collection of large amounts of geologic and hydrologic data for both new and existing mines. Recently developed microcomputer software facilitates the integration of this information from computer databases into ground-water flow models. The databases are used to identify areas which require dewatering and/or depressurizing and for generating contour maps of aquifer parameters. Gridded versions of these contour maps are incorporated into finite difference ground-water flow models which are used to design dewatering and depressurizing well fields and to estimate the effects of ground-water pumping and pit progression on local ground-water levels.

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

Currently, there are several techniques and technologies available which are used by mining industry in its attempts to remotely monitor the ground movements both at surface and underground mines. The currently available remote distance meters and distance change monitors mainly use phase change and time-of-flight techniques. The described monitor uses triangulation technique to track position of an optical spot projection and then image processing to measure mine wall movements. The system can be easily automated and poses no obstruction to mine traffic. The position of an off-normal laser spot will shift as the target wall moves. The described ground movement monitoring system has potential for superior accuracy and target monitoring can be made through air (gaseous) or other transparent media. The theoretical accuracy and range of this system depends solely on the resolution and focal length of the camera being used. The remote capabilities of the system make it uniquely suited to applications where monitoring is required in high-traffic, inaccessible, or unstable and dangerous areas of a mine.

Measurement of gamma radiation occurring in nature to characterize geological formations has been widely recognized in mineral exploration. Different methods and apparatuses have been developed for drill hole logging purposes. Geological formations vary in amount of naturally emitted gamma radiation. A gamma signature from a geological formation is captured by utilizing different types of gamma detectors. A natural gamma radiation detector (NGRD) can be used to control mining whenever there is a significant difference between the radiation levels in the mineral or ore being mined and the waste materials surrounding the ore. Surface miners, such as the one shown in Figure 1, can precisely control the elevation of the cutter as the machine moves over the surface of the formation. This type of machine is predominantly used in selective mining operations, e.g. surface coal mining. If there is a means to know the position of the cutter relative to the interface between the ore and waste, the miner can recover all or most all of the valuable mineral with very little out-of-seam dilution. This paper discusses the results of a successful application of gamma detectors to control a surface miner at one of North American Coal Corporations? locations - Red Hills Mine. The mine has nine coal seams in total with thicknesses ranging from 12? to 60?. The bottom six seams (Figure 2) are minable. The mine has complex geology and a significant amount of annual rainfall (4.7 ft). The mine produces approximately 3.5 million tons of coal and about 40 bcy of overburden per year. The operation utilizes diverse mining equipment including Dragline Marion 8200, electric shovel P&H 2800, Caterpillar end dump trucks CAT 785 and 789; bulldozers CAT D11, D10, D8, and D6. Coal is mainly extracted by utilizing a Wirtgen SM 4200 surface miner that is loading CAT 785 trucks with high volume coal bodies and payload of 150 t. Operational cutting depth is 24 inches with maximum cutting depth of 36 inches. Surface miner operators determine a cutting depth based on multiple cues, the most important being visual observations of a coal seam being cleaned or mined. The cleaning process involves removal of the last foot of waste material covering the coal seam. This is one of two critical phases in the coal extraction process. If, during the cleaning process, an operator sets a cutting head too deep, valuable product is wasted. If it is set too shallow, waste material is left to be mined with the coal. The second critical phase occurs in the last cut on the interface between the coal and waste material at the bottom of the coal seam. If the cutting head goes deeper than favorable, then waste material is delivered to a power plant.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

ABB offers complete electrical revamps of mining shovels with ac or dc drives, drive control, frequency converters with insular gate bi-polar transistor technology, intelligent control packages and visualization. Many of the world’s shovel excavators and draglines (walking excavators) were built in the1980s. After 15 to 20 years of round-the clock operation in openpit mines, these machines start to feel their age. Electrical parts are particularly vulnerable. Their performance deteriorates and availability and productivity fall. Even with regular ser-vice and maintenance, a machine of this age will accumulate 400 hours of unscheduled downtime a year. The need for a replacement becomes pressing, but the expense is often prohibitive.

This paper will describe how Newmont Mining Corporation continues to improve the economics of the heap leaching process for precious metals recovery.

"Float dust deposits in coal mine return airways pose a risk in the event of a methane ignition. Controlling airborne dust prior to deposition in the return would make current rock dusting practices more effective and reduce the risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions. The goal of this U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study is to determine the potential of open-air water sprays to reduce concentrations of airborne float coal dust, smaller than 75 µm in diameter, in longwall face airstreams. This study evaluated unconfined water sprays in a featureless tunnel ventilated at a typical longwall face velocity of 3.6 m/s (700 fpm). Experiments were conducted for two nozzle orientations and two water pressures for hollow cone, full cone, flat fan, air atomizing and hydraulic atomizing spray nozzles. Gravimetric samples show that airborne float dust removal efficiencies averaged 19.6 percent for all sprays under all conditions. The results indicate that the preferred spray nozzle should be operated at high fluid pressures to produce smaller droplets and move more air. These findings agree with past respirable dust control research, providing guidance on spray selection and spray array design in ongoing efforts to control airborne float dust over the entire longwall ventilated opening. IntroductionCoal mining processes produce airborne dust that naturally deposits on the floor, roof and ribs of mine airways. These fine dust particles, termed float coal dust when smaller than 75 µm in diameter, are deposited in the return entries of coal mines and can be reentrained by pressure waves induced by methane-air explosions (Rice et al., 1911; Nagy, 1981; U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 2006). These particles are also those most likely to participate in coal-dust-fueled explosions, which can potentiate and propagate explosions resulting in extensive damage. In order to meet compliance requirements of at least 80 percent incombustible content in the composition of material deposited in mine entries (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2016), coal mines apply an inerting agent, specifically, rock dust (Harris et al., 2009). Should methane be present in the mine atmosphere, the required fraction of incombustible content is further increased by 0.4 percent for each 0.1 percent methane. The removal of airborne float coal dust (AFCD) prior to deposition is an approach intended to make current rock dusting practices more effective by increasing the proportion of inert material to combustible material, resulting in a lower risk of coal-dust-fueled explosions."

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high LOI fly ash. Previous reports of utilizing froth flotation to achieve selective separations required long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address both of these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash; low LOI ash and a high carbon product suitable for reburning or further upgrading. A process flowsheet and description are presented.

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef' and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine's close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers' service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel, Burrard Inlet Crossing project for the Greater Vancouver Water District entails deep shaft construction, subway sized pressurized face tunneling through highly variable ground conditions, installation of three permanent steel water mains and construction of elaborate valve chambers adjacent to either shaft. The paper discusses key elements of the planning and implementation of 6.69 m Ø slurry mixshield tunnel boring machine (TBM) assembly in a small diameter deep shaft including incorporation of a fully pressurized launch lock, preparations for saturation diving, surface support infrastructure and initial mining sequence.

Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

Drilling programs and the study of active geothermal systems have shown that the reservoir rocks in many fields contain minor quantities of base and precious metals. Commonly, base-metal sulfides occur in the subsurface but, where present, Au, Ag, Hg, As, T1 and Sb rich precipitates deposit near, or at, the surface. Although in some fields (Geysers, Larderello, Tongonan) some of the ore minerals (and others) are relict, there is evidence that they are now depositing in a few systems. Recent work on active hydrothermal systems in New Zealand shows that: (1) Sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite (forming veins and disseminated discrete crystals) plus rare pentlandite, cobaltite and arsenopyrite, occur at Broadlands, NZ. Rare quantities of base-metal sulfides also occur in cores and cuttings from the geothermal fields of Waiotapu, Kawerau, Tauhara, and Ngawha. Further, Kakimoto (1983) has identified cassiterite, native silver, and trace gold in cores from Tauhara, in the south-eastern part of the Wairakei field. Bore temperatures at the depths from which these minerals were recovered are mostly between 220° and 300°C, but at Broadlands are locally as low as 120°C. The host rocks are Quaternary talc-alkali, silicic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, andesites, dacite and deep Mesozoic greywackes and argillites; however, there is no obvious relationship between mineralization and stratigraphy, permeability or well output. (2) The deposition of amorphous precious metal precipitates (Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, T1) from hot springs and well discharges has taken place at Broadlands, Waiotapu and Rotokawa; it also occurs at Kawerau. (3) Water discharging from Frying Pan Lake, Waimangu, is presently depositing siliceous sinter containing up to 4.1% tungsten. A characteristic of mineral-depositing fluids in the New Zealand geothermal fields is their very low salinity (total dissolved salts of 3000 ppm or less but with high CO2); they are of near- neutral alkali chloride composition, although water discharging from Frying Pan Lake has a pH of 4.5, and very low metal contents. Very effective concentration processes (10 times for gold at Broadlands) must occur: in the subsurface these include boiling and rapid cooling but near, and at, the surface, mixing of waters of different pH seems to dominate. In particular, descending acid condensate, derived from separated steam and oxidation of H2S mixes with its parent alkali chloride water, resulting in precipitation of amorphous ore metals. Base-metal sulfides also occur in veins and as disseminated grains in geothermal fields at Tongonan, Leyte and Southern Negros, Philippines. These fields have a porphyry-type setting with host rocks of Miocene andesitic lavas and pyroclastics intruded by diorites so that the fields have undergone complicated thermal histories before cooling to their present base temperatures of about 325°C. Precious metals have precipitated from waters from some wells (Leach, pers. comm.) but they do not, as yet, form ore-grade deposits.

Top down constructed large diameter (up to 90 m [300 ft]) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to: analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures? response to seismic loading, assist in segment design, and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly, and annulus backfill grouting. Intended for soft ground conditions, relationships between soil parameters and structure design are also explored.
