The trend towards proportionately rising volumes of surface mining through- out the world and especially in the United States has led some observers to predict that the future of underground mining is quite limited. Certainly, the simple extrapolation of current trends1 gives evidence of a compelling sort for the hypothesis that technological progress is proceeding at a faster pace in surface than in underground mining. This paper attempts to examine the basis for these predictions by searching the historical record on differential rates of productivity as these are observed in iron ore and coal mining. In recent years economists have discussed "technology gaps" among industries or segments of the same industry, by which they mean that mechanisms for invention and its diffusion are faulty or retarded in such a way that feasible cost-cutting innovations are not applied or developed, even though technicians regard them as practical.2

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. By now the term AFMAG has been fairly well introduced to the mining industry. Several papers have been presented and published concerning AFMAG (references 1 and 2). However, the term AFMAG remains rather new to the industry, and the exact place which AFMAG occupies in the minerals exploration field is still somewhat uncertain in the minds of many who may have use for this new and interesting method of electromagnetic exploration for conductive minerals. It is the purpose of this paper to again review the basic theory of the AFMAG system, to describe and - illustrate the equipment and data presentation as used in aerial surveying, and to provide some idea of the cost and nature of airborne AFMAG surveys. This paper is primarily of a general descriptive nature and presents AFMAG theory in a schematic rather than mathematical form; emphasis is placed on the equipment, the present method of data presentation and survey operations, since it is believed that such, information will now generally best serve to inform the mining industry of the characteristics of the AFMAG system.

In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

The impact of smoothing on the definition of ore and waste boundaries using linear estimation and conditional simulation methods is discussed. The nature of transfer functions is examined including their ability to incorporate categorical data (e.g. a dominant lithology code). An Ore Block Optimization (OBO) transfer function is presented that provides a clear guide for the mining geologist. Advantages are seen in defining stockpile cut-off grades and meeting production targets such as maximizing head grade, maximizing ore tonnes or minimizing ore loss or dilution. Each of these scenarios impacts on mine profitability and grade control.

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

As part of a purchase of a fleet of Caterpillar 785 trucks, Round Mountain Gold Corp., Cashman Equipment Co. and Caterpillar Inc. entered into a four-year contract for the major maintenance of the fleet of trucks. This contract includes fixed costs and guaranteed availability. The results have been excellent, and the fleet of trucks performs well. History The Smoky Valley Common Operation is a unique mine. Through a mixture of diligence and foresight, it has become the largest open-pit, heap leaching gold mine in the world. This was no small feat considering the remote area surrounding the mine. Round Mountain is located in north-central Nye County, NV. To the east of the town and mine lies the Central Toquima mountain range. To the west is the Toiyabe mountain range. Between them is the Big Smoky Valley, a flat expanse of sagebrush, salt grass and fine dirt.

It can systematically assess if the control and management systems designed for protection of sensitive ecosystems are adequate. The results of the assessment can help to identify key elements in the project that pose higher risks due to uncertainties in design. These assessments can then be used to make recommendations to further manage and reduce risks as the project is developed. QUALITATIVE RISK ASSESSMENT The general principles of a risk assessment are well summarized by Kaplan and Garrick (1981): "In analyzing risk we are attempting to envision how the future will turn out if we undertake a certain course of action (or inaction)." Fundamentally, therefore a risk analysis consists of an answer to the following three questions: What can happen? (i.e. what can go wrong?) How likely is it that that will happen? If it does happen what are the consequences?" Risk assessments can be performed using various levels of sophistication depending on the amount and accuracy of data available. A qualitative risk assessment uses descriptors throughout to express the level of risk. The definitions of the descriptors are presented in terms of the magnitude or concentration of contaminants. The results of a qualitative risk assessment can be used to: a)Document the evaluation and decisionmaking process. Although differences of opinion may exist about the definitions of the descriptors, the process is well-documented; b)Express the relative risk associated with specific activities or design elements; and, c)Select those failure modes or release mechanisms that may result in significant risks. These mechanisms can then be further developed in quantitative risk assessments. A qualitative risk assessment can be performed in a systematic approach using four steps (Van Zyl, 1987): A qualitative environmental risk assessment can be used to describe the risks associated with the development of a new mine and to make an evaluation of the adequacy of its design for environmental protection. The relative magnitude of risk associated with selected failure modes and exposure/consequence scenario assessments is the final result of a qualitative risk assessment. These failure modes are based on site specific areas and components, and mining and construction phases. The four steps of a risk assessment (hazard assessment, exposure assessment, consequence assessment, and risk characterization) are used in the development of a qualitative risk assessment. Relative magnitudes (using a five point scale of negligible to high) for each step, can be quantified in a qualitative risk assessment. Development of the descriptors for the relative magnitudes in each step is a very important part of a qualitative risk assessment. The success of a qualitative risk assessment depends on the adequacy of the information base and the subjective judgements made in each step. The quality of the risk assessment is, therefore, dependent on the experience of the assessors. A mining project in a sensitive coastal environment is presented as an example to demonstrate the application of a qualitative risk assessment. INTRODUCTION Environmental impacts from mining operations have been a significant factor in the last century. This was especially the case prior to the development of a better understanding of environmental processes and the potential impacts of acid rock drainage (ARD), and associated heavy metals, or the uncontrolled disposal of tailings and waste rock (Smith, 1987). Much care has been exercised over the last two decades in designing and operating mines to limit the environmental impacts as far as possible. All new mines are specifically designed with mitigative methods to manage such potential environmental impacts. Attention is directed to ARD impacts, safe disposal of mine waste rock and tailings, transportation and storage of chemicals and fuels, and final reclamation. A qualitative risk assessment can be used to address all project systems and activities that may potentially pose a risk to the environment.

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). Portland cement is a basic building material in every country in the world, and, fortunately, the raw materials required in its manufacture are widely distributed. Use of cement begins early in a country's development, and, because of local availability of raw materials, cement manufacture is one of the first heavy industries many countries desire. Use and manufacture of cement usually precedes other industrial materials such as steel and heavy chemicals, and consumption levels off for a long period during development of infrastructure and an economic base. With a mature economy comes a very high consumption. Per capita consumption varies ten times or more between nations (Figure 1).

The uncertainty associated with a reserve estimate has generally been expressed as a subjective ranking rather than a quantitative expression of either reliability or uncertainty. These rankings of estimate reliability have taken a very nonquantitative bent as well. For example, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission definition of proven reserves is given as: Reserves for which (a) quantity is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, workings, or drill holes, grade and/or quality are computed from the results of detailed sampling and (b) the sites for inspection, sampling and measurement are spaced so closely and the geologic character is so well-defined that size, shape, depth and mineral content of reserves are well-established. Heap leaching provides a method of economically recovering gold from low grade ores with low capital and reasonable operating costs. As with conventional methods, alkaline cyanide solutions are used for leaching. Since gold (and silver) is (are) present as the native metals, oxygen (as air) is required to oxidatively complex the metals with the cyanide. Oxygen depletion can readily occur adversely affecting recovery. The addition of low levels of hydrogen peroxide during leaching can lead to significant increases in both rate of recovery and total recovery. This process allows for the use of shorter pad times or deeper heaps and increases the gold (silver) concentration to the recovery circuit and thus can reduce cyanide losses by virtue of permitting the use of less total leach solution per ton of ore processed.

In the Fall of 1987 The Wellmore Coal division of The United Company installed a fines separation circuit in its #20 plant near Big Rock, Va. The addition of the fines circuit included a bank of classifying cyclones and two flotation units; one a conventional 4 cell, 34 m3 Wemco cell, the other an 2.4 meter diameter by 7.6 meter tall, 28.3 m3 column flotation cell. The new fine coal separation circuit is depicted in Figure 1. The column flotation cell is manufactured by the Deister Concentrator Company, Inc., under the trade name Flotaire. The Deister Flotaire column cell utilizes a counter current flow arrangement and a different means of generating air bubbles than that of conventional mechanical flotation cells found in coal processing plants. Other features include diffusers for additional air supply and a froth washer. This cell is one of the few commercial scale column cells processing coal.

This paper is a progress report on the commercialization of using bioleaching for base-metal concentrates. The paper focuses on bioleach processes for recovering copper from chalcopyrite and nickel/cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite. Data is discussed from pilot-plant trials in which an overall recovery >95% was obtained for the bioleaching of copper from chalcopyrite. The pilot plant was operated in closed circuit with solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits for final metal recovery. For the bioleaching of nickel and cobalt from pentlandite/pyrrhotite, an overall recovery of 97% was achieved. Precipitation routines were used to produce a final nickel/cobalt product. The pilot plants were capable of treating a few kilograms of concentrate per day. Prominent features in the design of a 1-t/day (1.1-stpd) copper-bioleach demonstration plant for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrate are discussed. The plant, which is now under design, will be constructed and operated based on the results obtained from the laboratory pilot-plant campaigns. Issues of scale-up for the demonstration plant, together with integration into upstream and downstream processing, are also addressed. Independently derived capital and operating costs are presented for a possible commercial plant. These cost studies indicate the principle economic issues in considering the application of bioleaching to the extraction of base metals. The benefits of bioleaching complex concentrates that are not amenable to physical beneficiation and economic treatment by conventional smelting are highlighted. Issues, such as the environmental aspects, that illustrate the benefits of bioleach technology are given.

Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.

Introduction Atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) is an improvement over coal-fired boiler design. It offers several advantages over conventional boilers. AFBC can meet sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission regulations without the need for add-on flue gas treatment equipment. The relatively low combustion temperature inhibits ash melting, thus reducing slagging and fouling that can in turn increase a boiler's fuel flexibility. AFBC process The fluidized bed boiler that operates at atmospheric pressure on the fire side (AFBC) is relatively simple and no different in purpose from those pulverized coal boilers used by utilities today. Fluidized bed boilers can generate steam at the pressure and temperature needed by modern steam turbines. Only the firing system is different. In fluidized bed combustion, the fuel can be almost any coal or waste fuel. It is burned in the presence of a bubbling bed of limestone. Air is forced through the bed at a velocity sufficient to support the weight of the bed particles. When the bed is fully fluidized, it bubbles like a boiling liquid. Although the burning coal makes up less than 1% of the fluidized bed, all the bed particles are heated quickly by the turbulence. The calcium in limestone reacts with sulfur dioxide produced in coal combustion to form calcium sulfate in a dry solid state. In this way, sulfur emissions regulations can be met without installing flue gas desulfurization equipment. Boiler tubes submerged in the bed absorb heat directly from the turbulent solids. The heat converts water in the tubes to steam or superheats the steam. Because of the intimate contact of the boiler tubes with the fluidized bed, heat transfer is highly efficient. Consequently, less boiler tubing surface is needed to generate the same amount of steam as in a comparable pulverized coal boiler. The optimum temperature for sulfur capture is relatively low, about 815°C (1500°F) as opposed to 1370°C (2500°F) for pulverized coal boilers. This results in the formation of lower levels of NON. Because operating temperatures are below those that fuse coal ash, a single design can burn a variety of coals without slagging or fouling problems. TVA's AFBC development program Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) involvement in AFBC development began in 1974 and has addressed the technical uncertainties through a comprehensive program of design, experimental, and analytical studies. In 1979, TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) developed plans for a 20-MW AFBC pilot plant, a 10-fold scale-up over the next largest test facility. Introduction Although mining in one form or another has existed for millennia, the use of numerical methods for mine design is a relatively recent development. The basic physics that control the behavior of rock or soil have been known for centuries, but it wasn’t until the last half of the twentieth century that analytical methods that could accurately predict the behavior of a large, irregular rock mass were developed. Before the advent of modern computers combined with differential and integral analytical methods, numerical methods available to mining engineers were limited to closed form solutions for simple excavation geometries. Today, mine-scale three-dimensional stress analyses can be performed on a relatively inexpensive personal computer. Many of the recent advances in rock mechanics modeling are the result of research funded as part of nuclear waste repositories around the world. The large scale exacting performance requirements of waste repositories are frequently very different from traditional rock mechanics projects. These facilities are designed and built under tighter control and scrutiny because of the potential hazards they present to the public. Therefore, a great deal of research towards advancing rock mechanics and numerical modeling resulted from these projects. Much of the repository research is applicable to commercial mines. The advances in modeling programs have been paralleled by advances in computer equipment. Today, a moderately equipped personal computer can handle most mine geomechanical modeling projects in a reasonable period of time. While the learning curve varies, an engineer with modeling experience can develop a medium sized model in a few days. The relatively low investment cost of geomechanical modeling today makes it accessible to most mining operations. The benefits of a solid geomechanical modeling program include reduced operating costs, improved safety, and reduced design costs.

The current economic climate of low commodity prices and increasing costs has put a lot of pressure on mining companies to ensure their operations will survive through the current economic downturn. While history tells us that the cycle will turn around and prices will go back up again, how many mining companies will be left to take advantage of the next upturn? On average in Australia, the maintenance of mining equipment accounts for up to 50% of operating costs; which equates to nearly $15bn per year. In addition to trying to boost productivity, mining companies are also putting a lot of pressure on reducing costs; all with the intention of maintaining/increasing profit margins and thereby keeping shareholders ?happy?. The whole premise of our economy is based on ?growth? and ?profits?. Movements in the market place force mine owners to ?react? to short term fluctuations. And if that movement is downward; operations people at the sites are forced to start reducing costs. Is this cost reduction done in a logical, systematic way where all risks (short-, medium- and long term) are considered? Invariably, the answer is no! Short term ?fixes? are normally implemented with little, or no, regard for medium- and long-term impact. And the reason for this is that management is not fully focused on the long term; focus is mainly on survival. Decision making is driven by shareholder sentiment and history tells us that this is largely short-term. So given these paramteres to work within, what role can ?Asset Management? play in assisting management to meet shareholder and market requirements whilst still maintaining long-term viability of their operations (to the long-term benefit of shareholders dare I say). As maintenance costs account for nearly half the operating costs of mining companies; the ?smart? management of assets is not only crucial; it is essential for survival in today?s economic climate. What is asset management? Asset Management, according to the UK-based Institute of Asset Management (IAM) is ?the systematic and coordinated activities and practices through which an organization optimally and sustainably manages its assets and asset systems, their associated performance, risks and expenditures over their life cycles for the purpose of achieving its organizational strategic plan.? How important is asset management in today?s mining companies? IAM goes on to say: ?This definition of asset management represents a significantly greater scope than just the maintenance or care of physical assets, and is closer to the central purpose of an organization. Good asset management considers and optimizes the conflicting priorities of asset utilization and asset care, of short-term performance opportunities and long-term sustainability, and between capital investments and subsequent operating costs, risks and performance. ?Life cycle? asset management is also more than simply the consideration of capital costs and operating costs over pre-determined asset ?life? assumptions. Truly optimized, whole life asset management includes risk exposures and performance attributes, and considers the asset?s economic life as the result of an optimization process (depending upon the design, utilization, maintenance, obsolescence and other factors).?

It doesn't take any special acumen to note that US engineering and construction firms are busier than ever with mining projects in this mineral conscious world. This special issue of Mining Engineering takes a look at E&C companies-their expanding role, their special capabilities, and their challenges and problems. ME sent a questionnaire to a representative sample of E&C firms. Information was sought about officers, ownership, and amount of business. ME also asked about types of projects and commodities dealt in as well as market distribution and forms of payment. The accomnanying charts show how the 17 responding E&C firms answered these and other questions. Other ME survey questions, and a review of company literature, yielded information about financing techniques and special challenges for E&C firms. Insights were gained concerning government impacts, customer-generated problems, and promising areas for development-including synfuels-in the minerals industry. These areas are discussed later in this article. Accompanying articles in the special issue discuss the E&C company's role in mining projects, research and development in E&C firms, one approach to contract work used by an E&C firm, and an E&C project case study.

The carbonatite orebody in Jacupiranga is situated some 230km (140-mi) southwest of Sao Paulo and is mined by Serrana S/A de Mineragao, producing an apatite concentrate for fertilizer production and a calcite tailing for cement manufacture (see Figure 1). The orebody (Table 1) is mined by open pit and the total production is 4.5 million mt/year of carbonatite ore with a further 2.2 million mt/year of overburden. The carbonatite low-grade ore (Table 2) is fed to the concentration plant at 460 mt/h , comprising of four parallel lines of grinding, by rod mills 2.7m x 4.5m (9 x 15-ft), operating in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The grinding circuit product is deslimed in four stages using hydrocyclones and the deslimed product is conditioned with corn starch and subsequently floated, using fatty acids as collector to, recover the apatite.
