"Efforts have been tried to apply the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials. Through the present investigation, a protocol to make construction materials using the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash has been set up. The experiment results of the present work also help set up the working conditions such as activation temperature and time, the concentration of NaOH, the addition of Ca(OH)2, forming pressure, mine tailing to fly ash weight ratio, curing temperature and curing time. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for the geopolymerization of the mixture of mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials, such as bricks for construction and road pavement. INTRODUCTION In mining activity, after the valuable materials are extracted from ores, millions of tons of solid rejects, i.e., mine tailings, are stored in the tailings dam, which occupies a huge area of land and leads to high monetary, environmental and ecological costs. For example, the impoundment of mine tailings can bring with serious environmental problems such as mine dust and tailing dam failure. On the other hand, the making of general construction material results in a lot of greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, it is of great interest to utilize mine tailings, for which a lot of energy has been consumed during the comminution process, as construction materials using the novel geopolymerization technique. (Xu and van Deventer, 2000, 2002a, 2002b; Pacheco-Torgal et al., 2007, 2008; Zhang et al., 2011; Ahmari et al., 2012) Fly ash is another industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials because it is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source. In addition, the facts that fly ash is quite reactive to alkali and its particle size is usually very small (< 50 microns) make the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process to make construction materials. Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution at an elevated temperature. After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as mine tailings and fly ash as construction materials."

For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

Washability analysis determines the maximum separation efficiency that can be achieved in the operation of coal preparation plants. Unfortunately, there are no on-line techniques for determining this most fundamental information. It now appears possible to determine coal washability on-line through the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis. This paper presents the results for the development of a CT-based, on-line coal washability analyzer. The development of appropriate hardware and software necessary to adapt a CT analyzer for use in determining coal washability is discussed. Testing of the analyzer using well-characterized coal samples is presented.

The U.S. mining industry can produce more material now with fewer people than it could a few decades ago. And that material can be produced more safely. However, the workforce is growing older and fewer young people are filling the holes created by retirements. Even though mining is one of the highest paid occupations in the United States, young people believe they can find jobs that pay almost as well without the risks and the often remote locations associated with mines.

Development of improved transportation networks in major urban centers has led more and more to underground construction, the only reasonable solution for decreasing surface traffic congestion. Excavations required by these projects usually cause decompression of the surrounding soil mass which results in subsidence of several centimeters. While these magnitudes of subsidence have no consequences in undeveloped areas, they are often unacceptable in urban areas where existing buildings, structures and utilities are endangered. Recent tunneling projects for the extension of the Paris Metropolitan Transit System (R.A.T.P.) underground network were carried out with this in view and gave rise to the development of a number of innovative techniques for minimizing ground decompression and subsidence. As shown in Figure 1, the recent R.A.T.P. expansion program includes a new express metro, 46 km long, crossing Paris from East to West, and the extension of many existing metro lines in the suburbs. From the start, R.A.T.P. was faced with many unique technical problems for which there was little precedent experience. The structures to be built have large dimensions, with cross-sections typically ranging from 40 to 300 m2, and exceptionally to 600 m2. The new lines are often very deep because the shallow profile is already congested by the existing metro, interceptors, sewers and a very large number of utilities. As a result, new construction is often below ground water level by as much as 20 m. Moreover, the geology varies widely from hard limestone with compressive strength over 1500 kg/cm2 to inconsistent water bearing sand. Finally, curves in the East-West line must have a minimum radius of 500 m which frequently forces the alignment to pass below existing structures, buildings and monuments.

Introduction Federal and state laws enacted to regulate coal mining and the accompanying public concern about the adverse effects that mining might have on land use have focused much attention on the subsidence of the land surfaces over underground mines. Some questions asked are: • Will abandoned mines subside in the future even though they have exhibited no surface adjustment to date? • If so, when will subsidence take place? • Can a specific surface area be affected by subsidence more than once? • What surface form will the subsidence feature take? • Is there any way to predict when subsidence will occur and end? An attempt is made here to address these questions insofar as it is possible with available data and experience of evaluation of subcritical extraction conditions. Mining that results in subsidence features can be classified as supercritical, subcritical, and critical with respect to the minimum span lengths of the worked-out rooms (Fig. 1). A complete basin will not develop fully immediately over subcritical conditions because the span lengths of the entries are less than the critical dimension (Wardell, 1983). Passageways, entries, and room-and-pillar panels are all included in the subcritical category. Because of the short span lengths, subcritical mining conditions tend to be stable over the life of the mine unless adverse geologic conditions exist (Gray et al., 1974; Dunrud, 1976). Various roof control and support procedures are employed to maintain entry stability during mining. Little information exists concerning the time factor of subsidence over areas of subcritical extraction. Data that have been collected relate to longwall mines, whereby the cavity sizes are designed large enough to induce caving behind the working faces so that complete subsidence at the surface occurs within a short period of time. The UK&apos;s National Coal Board (1975) has reduced the enormous amount of data it has collected to empirical correlations and has published these correlations in its Subsidence Engineers Handbook. The handbook states that "None of the foregoing remarks applies to pillar and stall working," with respect to the section discussing the time factor of subsidence caused by longwall mining (National Coal Board, 1975, p. 40). To understand and evaluate how time relates to subsidence above room-and-pillar mines, one must first recognize how mine cavities deteriorate and fail. The propagation of failure to the surface must then be studied, and, finally, the failures that are manifest at the surface in the form of depressions accompanied by both compressional and tensional movements must be investigated. Failure of mine cavities Any cavity beneath the earth&apos;s surface represents a condition of nonequilibrium and tends to close with time. Failure of cavities in a subcritical mine can be classified as failure of the roof, failure of the floor, failure of the supports (pillars, cribs), and elastic rebound of the rock. One mode of failure may dominate, but generally combinations of the four will occur. Also, initial instability of geologic materials and structural features and in situ stress may be unknown factors that can contribute to cavity failure. Roof failure is the most obvious opening stability problem in most operating mines. The bridging capabilities of the roof rock are dependent on the rock&apos;s material strength, geologic discontinuities, and reaction to humidity changes in the air of the mine. This type of failure may vary in magnitude from gradual flaking to massive roof falls. Mine floor instability can be manifest in the form of a general heave over a broad area or of individual pillar punching. The weaker and thicker the immediate floor material, the more prone a mine is to experience floor problems. Water seeping into an area can soften the underclay, reduce its bearing capacity, and precipitate failure of support for the overburden.

"Twin bored tunnels are commonly used for a variety of road and tunnel projects throughout the world.A major component of these twin tunnel projects is the construction of connecting cross passages that provide emergency access between tunnels and space for tunnel service equipment. Cross passages can present significant geotechnical risk and technical challenges to a project – support systems must be considered for redistributing loads around the mainline tunnel openings and supporting new loading resulting from excavation activities. Additionally, cross passages pose risks to construction schedule and cost because of their sequencing at the end of construction, so mitigation of schedule overruns can be critical. By observing field instrumentation data records from completed projects, a better understanding of the force development in each temporary structure can be achieved with indication of which structures are the most critical to support ground loads.This article discusses the data obtained during the Brisbane Airport Link construction project, a road tunnel located in Brisbane, Australia. Strain gauge instrumentation data from the precast segmental lining and propped opening steel sets is presented with relation to the construction sequence and local geology. Interpretations and conclusions based on the observed trends are proposed, with several key mechanisms affecting the loading and unloading identified.Brisbane Airport Link project overview. The Brisbane Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia, connects central Brisbane to the airport located northeast of the downtown with more than 7 km (4 miles) of twin-bore road tunnels, two lanes each, with several caverns, interchanges and access ramps constructed along the alignment to connect to other key routes in the city. The project was executed under a public-private partnership (P3) scheme, funded and operated by the consortium BrisConnections. The main contractors were a joint venture of John Holland and Theiss, while the design was carried out by Arup and Parsons Brinckerhoff.Construction of the tunnels was conducted using a combination of 17 roadheaders and two 12.5-m (41-ft) double-shield Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines (TBM) (Harding & Francis, 2013). The TBMs were used in earth pressure balance- (EPB) type closed mode for the initial portion of their drive, starting at the northeast end of the alignment. Tunneling started in soft ground, weathered rock, and mixed face conditions initially, progressing to competent sedimentary rocks as the drive continued. Support was accomplished using a 12.1-m (39.8-ft) diameter steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) segmental lining installed behind the TBMs in nine segments + one key arrangement. The innovative design of these segments is detailed in the paper by Harding and Francis (Harding & Francis, 2013). Ancillary roads and underground interchange caverns were constructed by sequential excavation techniques using roadheaders, accounting for nearly half of the total underground excavations."

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

Your thoughts on the current status of the global minerals industries? The global economic, technological, social and political changes of the last two decades of the 20th century resulted in the emergence of a restructured minerals industry. This industry is now based on a new cost-cutting philosophy; utilization of modern technology; productivity gains rather than production tonnages; diversification of mineral markets; and globalization of exploration, mining and processing. Quantity and tons used to be the focus. The emphasis today is on remaining competitive in the marketplace by lowering per-unit production costs as much as possible. What factors and trends will impact the minerals industries in this, the 21st century? A number of parameters will impact minerals operations and shape the future sustainability and growth of the minerals industries. Increased demand for minerals will be accompanied by the demand for technical advancements. We will also see a continued emphasis on health and safety, environmental stewardship, and education and training. Let me elaborate.

Accurate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in feasibility study and evaluation of design alternatives of mining projects. In this paper, capital and operation costs of backhoe loaders are estimated using multiple linear regression (MLR), based on principle component analysis (PCA). These cost functions are consisted of five independent variables; bucket size, digging depth, dump height, weight and horse power. The MLR is conducted in two steps. At the first correlation between independent variables is omitted using PCA technique. Thereafter, MLR functions are established using selected significant PCs and total cost functions are constituted as functions of initial variables. At the end, accuracy of functions are evaluated using mean absolute error rate method.

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If&apos; new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author&apos;s tables are extracted from Land&apos;s tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects under development in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwestern British Columbia and is being developed by NovaGold Resources and Teck-Cominco of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site a new 120 km road is required including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipe-line. Structural portal canopies and portal houses have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works have commenced prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. The tunnel works commenced in the summer of 2006 with the advanced excavation of the overburden materials at the portals. Tunnel construction from the North portal commenced in the spring of 2007. When completed, the mine access tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed along with a construction status update as of late 2007.

"Soft technology" computers and computer programs-brings to mind a room full of machines, tape drives, disks, plotters, and printers spitting out financial reports. Computers now have a much broader scope of applications because of reductions in equipment size and cost. For example, people now interact directly with computers to control events. Such computers and associated equipment-called interactive control systems-are often small, relatively inexpensive, and can be designed to increase productivity at mining operations. This is accomplished by improving communications between individuals; giving employees the information needed to make decisions in real time, as events are happening; and giving individuals the background needed to perform more effectively. This paper will describe a procedure for determining the return on investment for interactive control systems, and describe four such systems. The analysis process is general in nature and can be applied to any type of mining operation or production process.

The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine&apos;s life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. The Hallandsås project with a long history, first started in 1991, is well known in the tunneling community. In the past it has been stopped twice for technical and environmental reasons. The third attempt started in 2004 using a dual mode rock TBM. The heterogeneous highly fractured and abrasive rock mass as well as large areas of water bearing zones present most difficult subsurface conditions. The tunneling concept is based on the use of watertight segmental lining and a TBM able to operate in open mode, possibilities for extensive pre excavation grouting and high pressure closed mode operation up to 13 bar to cover exceptional conditions.

The recovery of natural gas (primarily methane) from coalbed deposits is an established and growing source for the U.S and accounts for over 7% of its total production. The gas from on-purpose degassing is often pipeline quality and requires only compression and dehydration before being admitted to the pipeline grid. However, the raw gas is sometimes contaminated with nitrogen (N2) and/or carbon dioxide (CO2) that can make the gas inadmissible to the transportation pipeline. In general, the N2 must be 4% or less and the CO2 should be 2% or less. In treating gas produced from virgin coal bed or from degassing operations where CO2 is present, amine systems are traditionally used for its removal. Engelhard’s Molecular Gate® adsorption system offers an attractive alternative due to its skid-mounted equipment, low pressure and unattended operation, cost and high on-stream reliability. Natural gas can also be sourced from the residual coal, after the coal has been mined. This source can be the GOB or gas remaining in abandoned coal mines. This source is almost universally contaminated, often with a combination of CO2 and N2. If the source is from air intrusion, the source can also be contaminated with O2. In treating CO2 / N2 contaminated feeds, the Molecular Gate adsorption system removes both of the impurities along with a level of O2 within a single processing step. To date, ten Molecular Gate units are underway with three systems having been installed for upgrading gas from abandoned coal mines. The technology consists of specialty adsorbents and advanced PSA processes that are jointly offered as fabricated packaged equipment by Engelhard Corporation and Guild Associates, Inc. Upgrading requirements, project challenges and project arrangements are discussed in this paper.
