INTRODUCTION The Magmont mine is a joint venture of Cominco American Inc. (operator) and Dresser Minerals, Inc. The mine-mill operation is located approximately 160 km (100 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO, in what is commonly referred to as the "Viburnum Trend.” The Magmont mine is designed for a production rate of 3810.2 t/d (4200 stpd) on a 5-day week, three shifts per day basis. Initial production began in 1968. The mine is open stope, room-and-pillar, and essentially horizontal along the trend of the ore body. Briefly, the main geological structure can be described as a brecciated graben bounded by reverse faults. The ore body in cross section is shaped like a bell curve with some lateral extension at the lower part. Presently outlined ore is 609.6 to 762 m (2000 to 2500 ft) in width and 2133.6 m (7000 ft) in length. The ore varies in thickness from 4.87 m (16 ft) on the fringes to an average of 27 m (90 ft) in the high ore areas bounded by the reverse faults. Lead is the primary metal with zinc and copper secondary. MINE DESIGN The basic design of open stope, room-and-pillar mines has been described by several writers and need not be repeated here. (Anon., 1970; Bullock, 1973; Casteel, 1972; Christiansen et a]., 1970; and Lane, 1964) This discussion covers the mining sequence as applied to the particular problems at the Magmont mine, the use of equipment, and deployment of the work force. In the upper portion of the Magmont ore body is a layer locally called the False Davis shale. This layer lies below the true Davis shale, is normally interbedded with dolomite, is of varying thickness, and if mineralized, is included in the top pass of the mining sequence. In thick ore areas this layer will be 2.13 to 2.43 m (7 to 8 ft) in thickness and will occur in the upper portion of the pillars. Due to its incompetency the presence of this False Davis layer is of primary concern in mine planning and operation. Mining areas are divided into three basic groups by ore thickness. First are areas of ore up to 6.09 m (20 ft) in thickness. These areas are below the False Davis shale and are mined single pass with drill jumbo. Second are those areas up 13.71 to 15.24 m (45 to 50 ft) in height. The first 4.87-111 (16-ft) Pass is taken at the top of the ore and the back and pillars secured. Benching the lower portion(s) in 4.57 to 4.87-m (15 to 16-ft) passes is then done with either a drill jumbo drilling horizontally or a crawler drill drilling vertically. Normally these areas are below the Table 1. Productivities per Manshift False Davis shale. These areas may also be mined by back slashing, or overhand benching, where the first 4.87-m (16-ft) pass is taken at the base of the ore and successive 4.87- m (16-ft) passes are taken upward. A minimum amount of back slashing is done at Magmont since it requires repetition of roof control on each pass and roof control is the single largest stoping cost at Magmont. Ore left to provide a working platform oxidizes and is coated by oil spills thus reducing metallurgical recoveries. The third mining area is over 15.24 m (50 ft) in height UP to a maximum of 40.23 m (132 ft) and will encompass the False Davis shale. These areas are mined by first driving +15% inclines to the top of the ore body. The top pass is mined and the back is bolted and roof mats installed as a matter of standard practice to minimize roof problems as mining progresses downward. Once the back and pillars on the top pass are secured, benching begins on successive passes with either the drill jumbo or crawler drill. Pillars on all successive passes below the top pass are secured as necessary. While benching progresses below the top pass, the pass at the base of the ore body is mined leaving a sill of 4.57 to 7.62 m (15 to 25 ft) in thickness to be removed with the crawler drill in a retreating manner. Rooms are mined on a 1.57 rad (90") grid pattern to insure alignment of pillars where multiple passes are taken. Pillars are designed on a 17.98-m (59-ft) spacing with rooms up to 10.66 m (35 ft) in width. Heading widths are wide enough for the mobile equipment to turn without additional allowance for curves. The result is a flexible layout which provides a maximum number of headings available for high extraction rates and grade control. PRODUCTION Incentive Bonus Incentive bonuses play an important part in the mine production at Magmont. Production crews are trained to perform only one of the mining functions of drilling, blasting, mucking. or roof bolting. This specialization, or functionalization, is augmented by development to open all possible stoping areas as early as possible in the life of the mine. This insures that each crew will have enough headings to perform its specialty. The incentive bonuses increase exponentially as output increases. The lucrative incentive bonus coupled with the specialization of the production crews and proper mine development have combined to give the high productivities shown in Table 1. Development crews perform all mining functions in their area. The incentive bonus is paid on a per foot basis, Crews on different shifts working the same heading share equally in the bonus proportional to their contract hours worked.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. A brief introduction is made on the existence of sulfides in the top gas of the Midrex Shaft Furnace, giving consideration to the operation of the furnace and the liberation of sulfur, as well as its consequential effects on the reduction process. The text shows a study of sulfur distribution in the pellet, emphasizing the importance of this distribution in relation to the liberation of sulfur during the reduction. A study was made to determine the sulfur compounds that exist in the pellets, showing ways of controlling the sulfur distribution and reducing its liberation during reduction.

Today a large number of open pit mines use computer-based mine management systems to automatically assign haul trucks, track equipment, and manage information. Now advances in digital communications allow the use of these systems in underground operations. Underground mine management systems help maximize production by providing impressive gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilization, draw point equalization in block caving operations, preventive maintenance, and safety. Current systems use allocated or "locked" train and LHD dispatching. While allocated dis-patching rarely optimizes open pit production, it offers an efficient mode of operation underground where options are more limited.

Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

Microwave power, used in conjunction with properly designed applicators, is an efficient and practical energy source for pre treating a wide range of mineral ores and concentrates. Novel processes which take advantage of the unique properties of rapid microwave excitation present many distinct advantages over other pretreatment methods. These include dramatically reduced costs and elimination of all or most of the toxic by-products. A capital and operating cost analysis is presented of EMR's microwave process for treatment of refractory gold ores and con­centrates based on the company's experience using both small and large scale pilot plants. Comparisons are presented between the microwave process and roasters, autoclaves and bio-oxidation.

The development of long term plans and schedules for strip mines now faces many companies, especially those developing large properties in the West. The rule of mining the lowest strip ratios first, while delaying equipment acquisitions and recouping investment the fastest, creates the situation where stripping ratios are too high in the latter years of mining operations. A program concept taking life of mine return on investment into account is developed in this paper to optimize mine scheduling and equipment acquisition. In addition, quality considerations (heat content, ash, sulfur, washability) can be considered by including the appropriate blending constraints to meet contract requirements.

Mineral Resource Technologies(MRT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU)finalized an agreement that permits MRT to offer an advanced carbon removal technology process for coal fly ash from an ash residue generated by utilities. The agreement encompasses the dominant existing US patents using a wet process for fly ash enhancement. The wet process for coal beneficiation of a fly ash product involves four steps. First, a slurry mixture is formed of a fly ash material and a liquid. Second, gravity is used to separate and collect a first-material fraction of the fly ash, having a density less than the liquid. This is done by skimming off the flotation slurry material.

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. Subsidence events occurring above inactive room-and-pillar (R&P) mines, including abandoned mines or sealed portions of active mines, are classified as unplanned subsidence, because of their timing and distribution are unpredictable. When investigating such subsidence cases, many uncertainties exist and disputes often focused on whether the observed structural damages are caused by mine subsidence or other natural or artificial causes. However, solid evidence to identify the cause is often lacking. In order to conduct a complete and impartial investigation, thorough knowledge of subsidence theories and other ground control topics, as well as broad experience, are required.

The Falcon concentrator is capable of separating minerals in fine size classes based on their differential density. Separation of mineral particles depends upon the fluid flow characteristics and relative movement of particles in a fluid. In the present study, a fluid flow characteristic inside the Falcon concentrator was established through experimentation and modeling. The Falcon concentrator has two fluid entry points: (a) Fluid entering through gravity assisted feeding system and (b) Fluid entering through the fluidized hole on the concentrator wall. In order to identify the role of fluid entering the concentrator, a tracer was injected into the system. As per the tracer based experimentation, it was established that fluid entering through the gravity based feeding system is responsible for thin flowing film formation in the stratification zone where particles are stratified based on their relative density. The momentum balance and continuity equations were simplified for a high centrifugal force field, and the fluid velocity profile was estimated inside the thin flowing film. Estimated fluid flow profiles will help to simulate the particle trajectories inside the Falcon concentrator. The influence of rotational speed, fluid flow rate, and cone angle on the fluid velocity profile were investigated. Fluid thickness over the concentrator wall is also estimated, and it is typically of the order of ~150–200 μm.

Forecasting, an ancient art, is con-ducted by everyone in varying degrees. It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

The Santa Fe Railway serves the dominant U. S. potash producing region which is centered at Carlsbad, NM. This rail system extends over 12,000 miles stretching from Chicago to the Texas Gulf Coast to the state of California. (see Figure 1) Since Carlsbad mining operations began in the 1930?s, Santa Fe has been transporting potash to many of the important grain producing areas of the country and to the major ports in Texas and California. Santa Fe has maintained a close relationship with the potash companies and has adopted a marketing philosophy of attempting to maximize opportunities for the Carlsbad producers where it is mutually beneficial. Potash has been an important commodity for the Santa Fe. It accounted for 8% of our revenue in 1965 and 3% in 1984. In the 1950?s, Carlsbad became the second largest revenue producing point on the Santa Fe. But this prominent position has diminished as ore reserves became depleted, imports flooded the U. S. market, and truck transportation developed.

The nature and extent of oil shale in Colorado and Utah are discussed. A look at most of the prominent activities now underway emphasizes the questions "where are we now?" and "where are we going?" Various alternate mining methods are reviewed and a bibliography of oil shale mining is included.

Blastings always generates induced vibrations through seismic wave, these are lost energy from the blasting and therefore causing the disturbance of slopes and structures near the blast source. Most of the components of an open pit mine have to reach a physical stability, especially during its closure process. Aiming to develop a vibration prediction model using the historical records from an open pit mine located on Peru, this research has two main focuses depending on the distance from the blast source to the structure: to protect the final slopes and to protect the villagers houses. Both are based on the Devine model of the Square Root Scaled Distance (SRSD) to predict the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV). The Mid field model, where is found mainly final slopes from the pit, limited by the failure criteria of McKenzie based on the geo mechanical properties of the rock mass. The Far field model ranges distances where are located the most community households, limited by the German rule DIN 4150 for highly sensitive structures. Both scenarios resulted on a distribution abacus to limit the weight of used explosives to get the best operational advantage and structure safety.

Changes in machinery operating and design parameters often result in unexpected vibrations or changes in the vibration patterns. Vibration in a system is an undesirable element that can cause machinery distress. Potential damage can be prevented by identifying the vibration level that is due to the changed operational parameters. This is necessary for the safe and reliable operation of plant equipment. This paper presents a documented study on vibration events that resulted from alterations in operating and design parameters in a mine ventilation fan and analyzes the causes by defining the sequence of events that led to its performance deficiency. This paper is based on experimental effort to study the vibration behavior of a ventilation fan under varying operating conditions.
