An atomic force microscopy (AFM) image analysis has been applied to study in situ the adsorption of hydroxamic acid collector, i.e., octanohydroxamic acid (OHA), on malachite in aqueous solutions. AFM images show that hydroxamic acid collector adsorbs strongly on malachite mainly in the form of insoluble copper hydroxamate complex. Increasing the collectors’ concentration and the adsorption time both increase the adsorption of hydroxamic collectors on malachite. Results from the attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that the collector adsorbs strongly onto malachite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected, and the ATR-FTIR results confirm those as obtained by AFM. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of malachite. The findings of present study also show that AFM image analysis is a powerful tool for the study of the hydroxamic acid collectors’ adsorption on malachite surface and it can help with the development of novel collectors for malachite flotation.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained.

The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation's industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferro silicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker Hill Mine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

In most open pit gold mines ore waste selection is based on estimates made from blasthole samples. These estimates frequently are biased. While it is true that high grades and "outliers" can induce a bias they may not be the only reason for the persistent bias seen at many mines. This paper focuses on a source of the conditional bias. In this paper it is shown that the poor blasthole sampling can cause a conditional bias in the estimates.

The Process Mineralogy review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. The Process Mineralogy Committee scheduled programs with both SME and The Metallurgical Society. At the 1991 SME Annual Meeting in Denver, CO the committee sponsored five sessions containing 31 papers. Four process mineralogy sessions were sponsored at the 1992 annual TMS meeting in San Diego, CA. Process mineralogy is used to understand and evaluate mineral behaviors during mineral beneficiation, phase reactions during metallurgy, recoveries and reactions of precious metals during processing and mineral and phase behaviors with respect to environmental problems. The most recent refinement in mineralogical studies with respect to mineral beneficiation has been the wider use of image analysis and combined materials balancing techniques of image analysis data. Image analyzers that can perform analysis with respect to mineral beneficiation are expensive. They are used only for solving major processing problems. Nevertheless, the methodology of analysis continues to be refined. Much better data are collected, and methods of evaluating the data continue to improve. One interesting development involves modifying the ultrasound unit used in medical studies to perform a three-dimensional analysis of ore particles.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

Surface and underground mining operations are often hindered by unknown tunnels and slopes and the precise locations of adjacent workings. Mine safety and planning are adversely affected especially in previously undermined areas where historical records are incomplete or nonexistent. The results of several ground penetrating radar (GPR) studies for the detection of known mine tunnels in underground coal, salt and gold mines are presented. A case study to locate unknown, abandoned mine workings at a surface gold mine successfully located all workings to a depth of 11 m (36 ft).

Investment in minerals development usually entails big financial outlays. which will remain at risk for a long time before the venture can begin to generate a return cash flow. Before 'committing himself to such a venture the investor would be wise to carefully examine the possible consequences of his exposure to risk. In this context risk is defined in multiple terms, which relate the magnitude of possible loss with the probability that such loss may occur--normally the probability will decrease as the amount of possible loss increases. The analysis of risk is an essential component of the decision making process, especially so in the case of low grade high tonnage mining ventures where a very real possibility exists that future unfavorable circumstances may lead to losses that could cripple or ruin even the richest corporation. Wells (1979) postulates a rationale for making the investment decision under uncertainty based on the comparison of two independent risk criteria: 1) the risk inherent in the venture represented by the negative portion of the cumulative distribution of the net present value (NPV), as derived by a stochastic evaluation procedure, 2) the limits of risk the decision maker is willing to accept, taking account of the financial capacity-of the 'firm to absorb various levels of future cash shortfall should the venture prove disappointing. The chance the investor would be prepared to accept can be expected to decrease as the amount of the possible shortfall increases. The limits of acceptable risk are-defined by a curve called the "LL-curve" which can be directly compared with the cumu¬lative NPV curve. A positive investment decision is implied if the limits of acceptable risk are not exceeded.

In the fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined, extra-thick seams with variable angles, the mechanisms of roof rock movement, failure, caving and filling are highly complex. This is due to the varying angle of coal seam in different areas, which makes rock–equipment stability control challenging. In this paper, the surrounding rock deformation and failure mechanisms, bearing structure of the overburden, and working characteristics of the supports are elucidated. The principle and key technologies of rock–equipment stability control are presented and applied to control the overburden of the regional failure and realize safe and efficient mining of the working face.

Tools as environmental product declarations are increasingly often used to compare several products and to take account of the environmental sphere in the choice. Environmental declarations of Belgian bluestone and sandstone products were realized in accordance with the ISO standards and following the standard NF P 01-010. The main goals of these studies were to obtain Belgian environmental product declarations to strengthen existing databases and to provide defences against Asian competition. Indeed, competition with China for bluestone products and with India for sandstone pavement is very important due the fact of the very competitive prices for foreign products. The impacts on climate change, resources and acidification of the sole transport were taken into account for foreign products"

The Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining (the Code) was adopted in 2001 by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) following extensive and wide-ranging consultation, and updated in 2002. The Code provides a framework and benchmarks for development and implementation of an environmental program for a marine exploration or extraction site by marine mining companies, and for stakeholders in governments, NGOs and communities in evaluating actual and proposed applications of environmental programs at marine mining sites. The Code provides for its review by IMMS after five years, with a focus toward possible modifications based on experience with its implementation and in light of developments in the field of marine mining and associated environmental practices, in consultation with the marine mining industry and with other stakeholders at marine mining operations. As the review of the Code is now due, to begin the process, this paper will present an analysis of the Code and initial suggestions for its modification. INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program which was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied using small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of the delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of the delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth and amount of detonating cord and cover.

A description will be given of an approach to plant process automation based on the strategy of first developing an information system followed by later development of process models. The advantages of this approach over the unit process control will be outlined. Some insight will be given into the risks associated with this method. For geostatistical applications, heterogeneous spatial phenomena are better modeled as mixtures of populations. However, the modeling of the constituent populations can become complex. The alternative mixture model offers a simplified approach to the w modeling problem. The model is applied and tested on the Walker Lake data set. Compared to the univariate ordinary kriging model, the alternative model generates less biased block estimates.

This paper describes the development of computer density control for heavy media cyclone circuit at the Coal Research Laboratories of CANMET. The control objective is to reach and maintain the medium density set point in minimum time. A description of the mechanical components and instrumentation are presented. The control strategy and computer software are discussed. Testing and evaluation of the installed system are presented.
