The flotation response to amine collector and its adsorption on the mineral surface was studied as a function of pH and collector concentration. The flotation response increased in the order anorthite + intermediate plagih clases + albite, while adsorption of amine obeyed the Freundlich equation r = A.Cn. This adsorption is proposg to be due to a covalent bonding between the AlOH surface pups of the plagioclase altered outer layer and the amino group of the collector. Finally, the study showed thatmtial dissolution of the solid phase provides the necessary conditions for amine attachment on the mineral particles and consequent flotation.

Although gold's market price dropped considerably from 1980's all time high, exploration for the precious metal remained a particularly bright spot last year, especially in the western US. For example, in Nevada-the nation's largest gold producer-further exploratory drilling at Louisiana Land & Explorations Co.'s deposit at Round Mountain and Newmont Mining Corp.'s find near Carlin resulted in sharp boosts in estimated reserves at both sites. Louisiana Land said its deposit is well on the way to being one of the largest gold reserves in the US. Based on further drilling, Newmont said its Gold Quarry property near Carlin could now produce 4.7-6.2 t/a (150,000-200,000 oz/ year). Reserves at Newmont's two properties near Carlin and a third property in southeast California are reportedly at least 218 t (7 million oz), up from the previously announced 128 t (4.1 million oz). Gold exploration activities were brisk in many other states, including a noticeable effort to explore and reopen dormant properties. Although the return on investments didn't appear as favorable last year as they did in 1980, the gold price was apparently sufficient to spur healthy exploration activity. Outside precious metals, market conditions, and subsequent exploration activity, appeared much more bleak. In the molybdenum market, for example, prices continued to slide, and Amax Inc. tightened its exploration budget. (Amax supplies 60% of the domestic market and 45% of the world demand for molybdenum.) The company spent 16% less on exploration during the first six months in 1981, compared to the same period in 1980. Copper and many other base metal producers appeared in similar straits throughout the year. Uranium exploration activities continued to suffer last year also due to depressed market conditions. Among others, Gulf Minerals Resources and Amoco Minerals Co. suspended uranium exploration activities in the West. Despite current unfavorable conditions, some companies continue uranium searches, confident that market conditions will rebound. On a brighter note, interest in exploring for some industrial and strategic minerals appeared on the upswing last year. Minerals used for oil and gas drilling, such as barite and special sands, were especially noteworthy. In geophysical activity, significant developments were achieved for electromagnetic techniques in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Geophysical logging activity declined due to decreased uranium exploration, and computer hardware continued to impact the way mining geophysical data are being acquired. Many presentations and papers were given last year to help exploration geochemists develop new techniques to locate concealed ore bodies. Among techniques described were statistical and computer modeling for enhancing anomalies over blind deposits.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs. On behalf of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to your Institute for presenting us with this opportunity to outline the regulatory control programme as it relates to the mining industry in the Province of Ontario. In Canada, and particularly in Ontario, we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Fresh water in the form of lakes and rivers covers nearly 17 per cent of the area of the Province. (Total area of the Province of Ontario is 412,582 square miles.) The mining industry, which had its beginning in the early 1800's with a small iron ore plant, has progressed with the major discoveries of nickel and copper in 1883, silver in 1903, gold in 1908, iron in 1939 and uranium in 1953, to the point where, in 1966, almost one billion dollars in mineral wealth was mined in Ontario. Water, in spite of its great abundance and with due respects that it may become a natural resource worthy of export in the foreseeable future, has become increasingly precious in Ontario, particularly in the more urban areas in the southern part of the Province.

In modern iron pelletizing plants fuel consumption has been optimized to such an extent that only minor savings can be expected in the future. Inspite of this fact, different process parameters were studied with a mathematical model and firing tests. The influence on fuel consumption and productivity was established. Furthermore, the adoption of simplified firing patterns was investigated, in particular for coal firing. In view of high costs of oil and natural gas, only substitution of these fuels by coal can substantially reduce production costs. In existing plants partial replacement of oil and gas can be achieved by addition of coal to the iron ore feed and by firing the pellets with pulverized coal. Two systems have been developed for the Lurgi- Dravo travelling grate process which enables coal to completely replace oil or gas. This paper describes in the first part the potentials for fuel savings available in the Lurgi-Dravo process. In the second part, different techniques for the use of coal as fuel in iron or pelletizing plants and in particular the recently developed Lurgi Multistage Coal Injection and Combustion Process (LMC) are discussed. Combined with the LMC process, a wide variety of iron ores and coals - also with high ash contents - can be used in the Lurgi-Dravo travelling grate process.

Several mineral process modeling and simulation packages are currently available for use in evaluating the performance of alternative process flow schemes. A critical link that has been missing from these packages is the ability to quantitatively model the effect of size reduction on the liberation of the valuable and waste minerals in the ore being processed. Although there have been several approaches taken to this problem over the past 25 years, none of them has led to a satisfactory conclusion. A technique was developed for measuring the effective liberation characteristics of magnetic taconite ores, and a program was constructed that makes use of these liberation characteristics in simultaneously simulating both size reduction and mineral liberation as it occurs in tumbling mills. This is an especially important step in the modeling of magnetic taconite processes, where magnetic rejection of low-grade wastes between grinding stages mandates that a predictive capability be available. The current application is specific to magnetic taconite, but it is possible that a similar approach could be used for other types of mineral systems. Pistachio nut shells, an agricultural waste biomass, and Lewatit TP 214, a commercial sorbent, were investigated as adsorbents for the adsorption of platinum from dilute hexachloroplatinic acid solutions. Before the pistachio nut shells were carbonized, adsorption percentage was 65%, whereas Lewatit TP 214 ensured almost 100% adsorption. However, after the pistachio nut shell was carbonized at 1,000° C under an argon atmosphere, the platinum adsorption (%) increased two-fold. The effects of such parameters as sorbent dosage, contact time, temperature and solution pH on adsorption were studied in detail in batch mode. The adsorption equilibrium data were best fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities, Qmax, at 25° C were found to be 38.31 and 33.22 mg/g for the carbonized pistachio nut shell and Lewatit TP 214, respectively. The adsorption of platinum on both sorbents was found to be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results indicated that the activated carbon prepared from pistachio nut shells can be effectively used for the removal of platinum from acidic solutions.

"The need to fill the void space or annulus created between an excavated tunnel or shaft and the final lining system has long been a requirement in underground construction. Most of those types of voids are created as a result of employing the two pass tunneling lining method. Filling of this void is called backfilling. For many years the materials used as backfill were primarily reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, sanded grout, neat cement grout, or blown-in sand/pea gravel. However, in the past 20 years the use of cellular grouts/cellular concrete as the backfill material has greatly increased. Most cellular grout is made of a mixture of water, Portland cement (with or without the addition of fly ash), a foaming agent and admixtures such as a water-reducer or superplasticizer.It is the authors’ preference to use the term cellular grout as opposed to cellular concrete since by ACI Concrete Terminology an ACI Standard (ACI CT 13), concrete contains aggregates. Normally cellular grout does not contain sand (finite aggregate), but almost never contain course aggregates.The authors believe there are several reasons for this increased use of cellular grout as backfill, such as:• The increase utilization of the various trenchless tunneling methods. Tunnels constructed using trenchless method tend to be smaller in size, excavated diameter or cross sectional area. Making man-entry for placing backfill from inside the secondary liner, utilizing pre-installed grout posts, more difficult if not impossible. It is these workspace restrictions that are the drivers as to when to utilize grout ports installed during the pipe/liner fabrication versus grout delivery pipes installed within the void/annulus space.• The ability of cellular backfills to be pumped and flow longer distances.• The unit weight of cellular grouts can be controlled by mix design and generally can range from 560 Kg/m3 (35 lbs/CF) to 1040 Kg/m3 (65 lbs/CF)."

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. Steven Tubbs From mine to farm is a long journey for Florida's phosphate, but it is an important one to the American farmer who uses phosphate fertilizers to replenish the soil and produce the crops which eventually wind up on the American dinner table. In this phosphate-food connection, transportation plays a vital life-giving role, a role that is unique because of the large quantities of phosphate produced and the mineral's location in relation to its markets. Florida Leads World Florida is the world's largest phosphate producer, supplying 80% of the nation's and a third of the world's annual total. About 95% of Florida's phosphate goes into agricultural chemicals, with 90% going into fertilizers. Phosphate production is primarily concentrated in west central Florida, with the exception of mining and processing in north Florida by Occidental Chemical Co. The phosphate rock is beneficiated at the mine sites and then is transported out of Florida in a raw state, or to one of the industry's 18 chemical complexes where it is processed further. In 1981, Florida produced more than 42 Mt (46 million st) of phosphate rock-a 1% decrease from 1980. The industry also produced more than 12 Mt (13 million st) of phosphate chemical products in 1981 and transported them to both domestic and foreign customers. This year, the state's phosphate production and shipments are substantially lower than recent annual levels because of a depressed worldwide phosphate market. With production down slightly in 1981, shipments declined and company inventories increased dramatically. Phosphate-related shipments through the port of Tampa alone fell 20%. As a result, in 1982, phosphate operations cut production to reduce inventories. According to the Fertilizer Institute, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1982, phosphate rock production fell 18%; phosphate rock shipments, 28%; finished fertilizer production, 30%; finished fertilizer shipments, 25%; and phosphate rock exports declined by 20%. Despite depressed conditions, Florida phosphate production and shipments are expected to increase in the near future with more rock being processed into fertilizer products. Phosphate is one of Florida's major industries. The US Bureau of Mines estimates it contributed $3 billion to the state's economy in 1981 and an additional $1.4 billion to the US economy. Kennecott Corporation, in joint venture with Galactic Resources Ltd., recently began operation of an open pit gold mining and milling facility near Columbia, South Carolina. The deposit consists of two ore bodies (North and South deposits) hosted in deformed and altered meta-volcanics and meta-sediments of the Carolina Slate Belt. This paper describes the rock mechanics and engineering geology investigations conducted for design of interim, ultimate and final reclamation slopes for the South Pit. Emphasis includes the successful use of drill core orientation techniques to confirm complex geologic structure at depth; the development of a three-dimensional rock mass competency model, incorporating surface mapping data, results of bench mapping documentation, field index testing and laboratory testing; and kinematic assessments for design of optimum slopes.

The Tilden concentrator was originally constructed in 1974 for the processing of low grade hematite. Flotation is a key concentrating process in the operation, and therefore flotation optimization has been a major concern since the plant startup. This paper will discuss some of the modifications made in the process to achieve optimization. The conversion that now enables the plant to process magnetite as well as hematite also will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The Tilden Mine, located in Ishpeming, Michigan, is managed by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and two Canadian steel makers. It was constructed and started production in 1974 and expanded in 1979 for processing a low grade, fine-grained hematite iron formation for which there was previously no technology available. Several papers have been written describing the unique character of the concentrating operation. The hematite plant consists of 12 grinding and concentrating lines, which utilize two stages of autogenous grinding with crushing of an intermediate sized product. The ground product is deslimed in a highly dispersed alkaline environment to reject silica. Corn starch, the flocculant, has a high affinity for iron at the operating pH range of 10.5 to 11.0. The ore is upgraded from 35% to 45% iron in the desliming step. The deslime thickener underflow is the feed to flotation. Each flotation line consists of a bank of 10 rougher cells, followed by four scavenging banks incorporating 5, 4, 3, and 3 cells each. The Wemco flotation cells are each 14.1 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) in volume. A total of 12 flotation lines are available. [ ] A reverse flotation process is employed, using a straight-chain, 8 to 10 carbon primary ether amine silica collector. At the levels used in the circuit, the amine also serves as a frother. A final concentrate is produced in the rougher cells. The concentrates from the four scavenging steps are combined and recirculated to the feed end of the roughers, with the fourth scavenger froth being discarded as a final tailing. Upgrading to about 65% iron is achieved, with control of the circuit based on final concentrate silica grade. Starch is again used, this time as a depressant for iron. During the years of operation, several key areas of the flotation process have been targeted for optimization. The most significant improvements have been realized in the following areas: *Grade Control Automation *Control of Water System Chemistry *Flotation Spray Water This paper will focus on these areas, but other minor improvements also will be briefly discussed.

The recent trend in the ventilation of deep under- ground metal mines in the United States is to rely more and more on refrigeration for air cooling. This paper describes the layout and the economics of the refrigeration method used by Hecla Mining Company at the Star Mine. An economic analysis must compare the benefits of an engineering system against the costs. The benefits of refrigeration, for example, are increased production rates, a better safety record, improved employee moral, and generally lower airflow requirements. Air-conditioning costs include capital expenditures for equipment, labor and supply costs for maintenance, and power costs for machine operation. A study of whether or not to install refrigeration becomes academic when a mine reaches the critical ventilation depth1 (the depth at which adiabatic compression alone produces station temperatures equal to the desired stope temperatures). Ventilation planning alternatives for such mines, including the Star Mine, are limited to the different methods of refrigeration usage. In this case study of the Star Mine, the refrigeration layout is described in detail. After the system performance is discussed, air-conditioning costs are calculated. The paper then concludes with a cost- benefit analysis of the Star Mine refrigeration system.

The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

Common mineral resources (sand, gravel, crushed stone, etc.), which are so necessary for the construction of metropolitan areas, are rapidly being depleted or otherwise rendered unavailable in the very areas that need them most. However, the problem of planning for these resources involves a number of independent and dependent variables that must first be defined and related. Finally, a dollar value must be assigned where possible. Complex interrelationships between the variables and their dependence on outside factors has made mathematical "solution" of the problem of planning for non-renewable mineral resources difficult at the present time. Therefore, the use of computer simulation is suggested as a means by which this complex problem can be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to report on a continuing research program whose objectives are: (1) to delineate the factors involved in planning for the utilization of common mineral resources in urban-suburban environs; (2) to construct a planning model for these materials amenable to computer analysis, (3) evaluate the model by using test cases, and (4) perform a sensitivity analysis to determine the initial parameters in future planning for these materials.

Substantial volumes of cyanide are consumed in precious metals mining due to the purposeful destruction of base metal cyanide complexes and free cyanide to meet surface discharge regulations. This destruction of cyanide resource runs counter to the prevailing social ethic of resource conservation wherein cyanide recovery-and-reuse is considered a more socially responsible cyanide use pattern than systematic cyanide destruction. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed membrane based methods for the recovery of cyanide from barren solution as a means to reduce cyanide waste. The HWPT Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS™) system uses state-of-the-art spiral wound membrane elements that are engineered specifically for the treatment of high pH cyanide process solutions. The membranes fully reject WAD CN, SAD CN and most minor metals, and partially reject SCN, Free CN and precious metal cyanide from a high clarity barren solution feed to a small volume EMS™ “concentrate” stream. The EMS™ “concentrate” stream is returned to the process. The large percentage of the EMS™ process feed exits the system as cyanide lean EMS™ “permeate.” The EMS™ permeate, after residual cyanide destruction, polishing, and pH adjustment, is, thereafter, typically suitable for discharge. Separately, the HWPT EMS™-PLS method of cyanide recycling is an internal plant cyanide recovery step that removes base metal cyanides from a pregnant leach solution to a small volume EMSTM concentrate stream. The concentrate stream is then typically processed further for the recovery of metals and recovery-recycling of cyanide. The method makes it economically practical to recover gold from Merrill-Crowe or car-bon plant “fouling” solutions, e.g., those with greater than 400 ppm Cu, as might result from the use of the EMS™ method wherein EMS™ concentrate is constantly thrown back into the mine leach solution pool as part of the free cyanide recycle process, or as might result from the single-pass leach treatment of high copper content ores or concentrates. The EMS™ cyanide recovery method for barren solution treatment is shown to be “economic” for the treatment of clear solutions at the approximately 200 ppm total cyanide level (CNT), and for slurries at the approximately 400 ppm total cyanide level, where economic is defined as a 2 year EMS™ plant payback. [One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

The pressure of military use of quartz resonators led to efforts to Grow high, grade quartz crystals in Germany and in Great Britain during 19)3-25, and was responsible for a series of U.S.A. Signal Corps contracts beginning in 1946 with the Clevite Corporation (as the former Brush Development Company), Bell Telephone Laboratories, Antich College, and others. The technique of growing crystals from the melt, such as KI, NaBr, was already commercially inuse Quartz could not be so grown, since its utility depends on the form stable below 573°C, and, even if it could be grown from an extraordinarily viscous melt, the higher form passing through this transition becomes twinned. Again, several crystals were being grown commercially from water solutions; quartz, however, is listed in the common literature as being insoluble in water. Fused quartz, or vitreous silica, was chosen as raw mater¬ial by the European experimenters because of its thermodynamically lesser stability than quartz, and various alkaline solutions were tried for the purpose of enhancing the solubility.

In west-central England, 183 m (600 ft) below the Cheshire Plain, lie the evaporate remains of an ancient sea. Stratified into nine beds of salt separated by marl bands, the deposit stretches roughly 21 x 12 km (13 x 7.5 miles) and contains reserves of rock salt estimated as high as 400 Gt (440 billion st). The Winsford Salt Works, one of England's largest underground mines, extracts the Cheshire salt and sells it for use as animal feed, for application in de-icing programs, and as a key ingredient in sodium fertilizer production and a variety of other industrial processes. Because road de-icing is an important market, demand for Winsford's salt varies with the severity of British winters. Design capacity is 2.25 Mt/a (2.5 million/year). However, production peaked at 2 Mt (2.2 million st) in 1987. Over the past five years, annual production has averaged 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Run-of-mine salt averages 92.5% NaCl, mixed with about 5% marl. The marl was formed by deposition of a reddish dust blown into the Cheshire basin from deserts in what is now central Europe. Association with the marl adds color to the salt, producing tea-colored crystals that resemble unrefined sugar. Adaptation of coal mining systems Rock salt mining in the Winsford district began at least as early as 1682. Mining at the current site dates from 1844 but was shut down from 1892 to 1928. In the early 1900s, a series of catastrophic collapses and floods plagued and ultimately shut down then-active Cheshire brine-salt producers. Subsequently, Winsford reopened and began adapting mechanized underground coal mining systems to rock salt extraction.

A technique was developed to determine the fraction of air recirculated from the scrubber exhaust toward the face and the fraction of gas captured by the scrubber. To determine these two values, a series of tests was required. In the first test, gas was released at the face area and concentrations measured at the scrubber exhaust. In the second test, gas was released directly into the scrubber with concentrations again measured in the scrubber exhaust. The simultaneous solution of two independent flow expressions gave values of recirculation and scrubber capture. A series of tests was conducted with various combinations of scrubber flow, curtain flow, setback distance, and machine location. Statistical analyses then were conducted to determine those factors which influenced the levels of scrubber recirculation and scrubber capture in a deep cut. INTRODUCTION As cutting depths increase, the trend is toward the use of blowing face ventilation systems. With these ventilation systems, the potential exists for recirculation between the scrubber exhaust and the intake air stream. One concern is that methane gas, having been removed from the face area, is subsequently recirculated back into the intake airflow. Under these conditions, methane-laden air could be substituted for fresh intake air, leading to increased methane concentrations at the face. There is currently no standard for recirculation between the scrubber and intake airflows. The implied understanding of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is, and has always been, that any recirculation of ventilation air is unacceptable. To minimize recirculation potential, MSHA suggests that operators maintain scrubber and curtain flows within 0.47 m3/sec (1000 cfm) of each other. Given that recirculation may occur in some circumstances, the question arises as to how much recirculation constitutes a hazard for the face workers. Unfortunately, there is currently insufficient information to answer this. Emphasis must instead be placed on means to quantify the amount of recirculation between the scrubber and face area. Methods must also be examined to control this phenomenon. This paper presents a technique for quantifying recirculation and scrubber capture levels in a blowing face ventilation system. Several ventilation parameters are investigated to determine their effects on these levels. DEVELOPMENT OF RECIRCULATION EXPRESSIONS One way to measure airflow quantities at a point near the face would be to measure the gas flow rate Qgas, and gas concentration c at that location. The airflow Qair, would be simply the ratio of these two values, Qair, = Qgas/c. Although gas concentration values, c, can be obtained easily with existing gas monitoring equipment, it is more difficult to obtain gas flow readings, Qgas, at specific locations. To obtain these values of Qgas, another method was needed. Previous work in this area was conducted by Kissell and Bielicki (1975). However, the calculations in their model assumed a constant gas concentration in the region around the continuous miner. In a deep cut, it is questionable that gas concentrations would remain constant or uniform around the mining machine. The technique presented here does not rely on this assumption. It instead assumes that the gas concentration in the scrubber exhaust remains constant. A quantity of gas released at the cutting face either flows into the scrubber inlets or bypasses the inlets and flows around the off-curtain side (in this example, the right side) of the continuous miner (Figure 1).
