In the fall of 1988 it became evident that the accuracy of sulfur forecasts for Monterey Coal's No.1 Mine needed to be improved. In addition, it became necessary to predict if any individual train shipments during a month would exceed a contract sulfur limit. The challenge was to develop a forecasting process that would take into account the variability of the coal in the ground as well as the difference between laboratory and preparation plant sulfur reduction efficiency, and the effects of mining coal with multiple units. This paper describes how geostatistics and simulation techniques were used to meet this challenge.

La Colorada Mine was begun in 1993 as a small heap leach mine and was the first operation for Eldorado Gold Corporation. 'This paper describes the growth of the mine to annual production levels near 60,000 ounces of gold and highlights recent improvements that were made to maintain a profitable operation by efficiency gains and cost containment programs.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. The "mass balance" is unquestionably the most common class of problems for the process engineer'. Closely related, mathematically, is the "heat balance". Every laboratory test requires a mass balance to describe the results. Mass balance calculations can be subdivided into several sub-categories based on whether the results are time dependant or not and depending on whether the input data are measurements that contain errors or are hypothetical values with no errors. Time dependent mass balances are dynamic process simulations and in addition to the conservation of mass constraints require kinetic data input. They are one step beyond simple mass balances.

Northwestern Resources Co. (NWR) was established in 1972 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Western Energy Company of Butte, Montana, to acquire, explore, develop, and produce energy resources outside the state of Montana. Western Energy is a coal mining company with successful operations in Montana and Wyoming. In 1974, NWR acquired its first lignite lease in Texas. NWR eventually acquired a large leasehold in central Texas, which was identified as having a high potential for future production. In 1979. NWR contracted to supply lignite to Utility Fuels, Inc. (UFI), a fuel affiliate of Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P). This project, together with leases held by UFI, became the Jewett Mine. Lignite from the Jewett Mine is used as fuel at the adjacent HL&P Limestone Electric Generating Station, at an annual rate of approximately 7.3 Gkg (eight (8) million tons) per year.

The scale-dependent hydraulic properties in a fractured porphyry copper oxide deposit are investigated for relevance to in situ leach mine (ISLM) design. In most well field designs, mine operators assume that hydraulic properties represent a continuous spatial function, or continuum. The problem, however, is that the representative elemental volume, the volume over which hydraulic properties are described as a continuum, is a domain (if it exists) that occurs between end members representing varying degrees of heterogeneity. At the Cyprus Cas a Grande mine, transmissivity fluctuations are spatially correlated suggesting that at the scale of ISLM, the hydraulic process is heterogeneous and a typical continuum representation is inappropriate for design. Alternatively, a conditional stochastic approach using the simulated annealing (SA) technique is deemed useful for the imaging of heterogeneous hydraulic properties. Specifically, SA preserves transmissivity extremes and spatial complexity, both necessary for accurate conditioning of a flow simulator. Also, the stochastic continuum approach provides an avenue whereby uncertainty (or risk) may be addressed. Currently, the SA weaknesses are that it is computationally time consuming, and uncertainty may increase when simulating under conditions of statistical isotropy. Recognizing that ISLM exerts a dynamic influence on hydraulic properties with time, the mine design should be reevaluated at intervals throughout the evolution of the leaching process.

The evolution of sustainable development in mining is recognized as a key contributor to sustainable development (SD), which is defined as the ability of current generations to meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland, 1987). This includes, in equal parts, social, economic and environmental impacts ? triple bottom line (Munashinge and Shearer, 1995). Alternately, sustainability has been defined in relation to social, natural, human, physical and financial capital. Our way of life relies significantly on the materials provided by mining, while mining activity affects the triple bottom-line or the five capitals. The mining community and its professionals have come to realize the importance of engaging all stakeholders in the discussion on sustainability. SME, as the leading professional mining organization, has been involved in these discussions. The society has various initiatives in sustainable development for members and stakeholders. The objective of this article is to: provide historical context for current trends in mining and SD and share SME sustainability initiatives ? their goals and rationales ? with the broader mining community. This article is timely because the past year saw two landmark forums on sustainable development: Rio+20 ? the 20th meeting of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, and MMSD +10, the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development project 10 years on. Furthermore, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Milos Declaration on the minerals professional?s responsibilities in achieving sustainable development, forums in which SME was involved.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities."

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.

INTRODUCTION In other chapters of this volume many of the important technical aspects in the design of concentration and dewatering circuits have been discussed. This chapter will deal with the steps necessary to bring that information together in order to produce the specifications necessary to purchase the equipment and complete the design. It deals with the plant as a whole rather than just concentration and dewatering, since the steps are essentially the same. Prerequisites to Engineering Design Feasibility studies will have been completed and design parameters established prior to the start of the engineering design stages for a metallurgical plant. The data base for the feasibility studies will have included laboratory and/or pilot plant test work, historical data, proposed plant site data such as climatology, topographic mapping, geological and geotechnical information. These studies will have established the general project design criteria as well as the process design criteria leading to the preparation of preliminary flowsheet ( s) and/or alternative process flowsheets. These will have incorporated metallurgical and material balances, allowing identification of major equipment items, and development of preliminary plant site plot plans. Preliminary technical and economic assessments and recommendations will have been prepared during this phase for Owner's review and evaluation of the technical, physical, and cost effectiveness of the overall project and its component process, process facilities, and supporting facilities elements. After Ownert s approval and decision to proceed, the engineering design can be initiated, using the above information as the basis. Engineering Design Phase The engineering design of metallurgical plants and their elements are generally developed in two sequential stages, namely: (1) Basic ("Front end") Engineering Design (2) Detail Engineering Design Figure 1 relates these engineering stages to the entire program from feasibility through construction.

In 1980, a caravan of representatives of Japanese trading companies debarked on the shores of the United States bearing gifts of watches, electronic games, and radios. In early 1983, we find in a parking lot of a major U.S. coal company, a haggard general manager of marketing returning to the Orient with a box under his arm of trinkets of his own; cross pens with company logos, alarm clocks, etc. The tables have turned, but our fellow sitting in a jet plane over the Pacific Ocean had only to heed the warning of the famous 19th Century poet well familiar with the ways of the Far East. Kipling said; "And the End of the Fight is a tombstone white and with the name of the late deceased, And the epitaph drear, a fool lies here who tried to hustle the East."

Refractory gold concentrates often contain sub-microscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulphide minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically, by oxidative processes such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pre-treatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulphides to elemental sulphur, sulphur dioxide gas or sulphate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as down stream operating costs. Iron sulphide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution that is generated from oxidation of the sulphides. This liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulphide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulphate, but this is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulphate, which then hydrolyzes and re-precipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200OC) the formation of hematite is favoured. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200OC), the formation of basic iron sulphate is favoured. If the ore or the leach solution contain significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favoured. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulphate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulphates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulphate; the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant, and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

Public Law 95-87 enacted by Congress in 1977 and subsequent regulations require coal mine operators to predict the effects of mining on the environment prior to the start of mining. Prediction of the effects of mining on the local groundwater system is a difficult task due to its complex nature and the lack of detailed published information. An investigation of water level fluctuations in five we1 1s positioned over three consecutively mined longwall panels was initiated in conjunction with an intensive subsidence monitoring program. The purpose of this work was to provide detailed information which could be used to predict certain hydrologic effects of longwall mining in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. The results of this case study indicate that water level fluct- uations in the local ground-water system above longwall panels is associated with subsidence and that the static water level will generally re- establish at or near the pre-mining elevation after mining is completed.

Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature&apos;s wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don&apos;t exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa&apos;s "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

In this paper, a geostatistical study of the North Butte roll type uranium deposit is presented. The geostatistical procedure applied takes into account the varying direction of the roll front for reserves calculations. For variogram calculation, the roll front is unfolded thereby allowing estimation of the variogram in directions parallel to and perpendicular to the roll front. Variograms calculated in unfolded space show strong directional anisotropies consistent with the anticipated configuration of the deposit.

A leach pad’s fluid flow characteristics greatly affect the recovery of metals from heap leaching. However, because there are other factors such as particle size distribution, application rate and method, and chemical reactions to consider, mining companies often overlook potential problems associated with fluid flow until it is too late. In an effort to better understand the dynamics of fluid flow in leach pads, a series of experiments were preformed using temperature probes. A model leach pad was set up using a particle size distribution, fluid application rate, and application method common to modern leaching methods. Variable water temperatures were applied in succession and data gathered from the three dimensional grid of temperature probes built in to the model. Current work is analyzing these data along with visual observations of the model, computer simulations, past mining experiences, and other related research, in an attempt to develop a low cost test that could be performed prior to large scale leaching to determine the fluid flow characteristics of a particular ore. This paper will summarize the work and findings to this point as well as suggest areas of additional related research.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960&apos;s, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan&apos;s growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.&apos; As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada&apos;s output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. Tracer gases have been utilized successfully in a variety of industries, each with specific releasing and sampling methods. The various attributes of tracer gases are dependent on the industry the tracers are utilized in. Tracers must be chemically and thermally stable, safe, odorless, detectable at low concentrations, have a low background concentration, and should not be naturally occurring in the environment if they are utilized in underground mining applications (Thimons et al., 1974). In addition, the tracer gas should be inexpensive, non-corrosive, non-toxic, easily transportable, readily attainable, and non-radioactive (Kennedy et al., 1987). Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) met many of these above requirements and therefore was introduced as an ideal tracer gas to use in mining industry in the early 1970?s (Thimons et al., 1974). Due to the nature of underground mining including complicated geometry, irregular flows, turbulent flows, obstructed airways, and leakages it is difficult to use conventional anemometer and smoke tube techniques to accurately measure the effectiveness of ventilation controls (Thimons et al., 1974; Klinowski and Kennedy, 1991). There have been several applications of SF6 as a tracer gas in underground metal/non-metal and coal mines. Thimons et al. conducted early testing of SF6 in an underground limestone mine and determined that it is an effective technique for evaluating auxiliary fans, estimating volumetric flow rates in large areas, and measuring low flow velocities. A rapid face ventilation measurement method (FVM) utilizing SF6 was developed by the Bureau of Mines to make face measurements in underground coal mines (Timko and Thimons, 1982). When measuring the effectiveness of jet fans in dead headings SF6 was proven more effective than smoke tubes (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Experiments related to determining methane liberation in the gob were also conducted by injecting SF6 into a borehole (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Also, in an emergency situation where the gob had to be sealed due to a fire, SF6 was released to determine the effectiveness of the seals (Timko and Thimons, 1982).

LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine is a sublevel caving iron-ore mine located above the polar circle in northern Sweden. The mine has been proclaimed seismically active since 2008 after a magnitude 3 seismic event, according to Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN). At that time the Kiruna Mine did not have mine-wide seismic system. Since then, the Kiruna Mine experienced several damaging seismic events of which the largest one on the May 18, 2020. The magnitude, based on the moment tensor inversion results on data from the SNSN as well as seismic stations in Finland and Norway, is estimated to 4.2 ± 0.2 moment magnitude. The seismic event on the May 18, 2020 was located in the middle of the one of the productions areas and caused the major damage in the mine, damaging several kilometres of drifts on six mining levels, some of them beyond the practical repair. These damages affected four of ten production areas on several levels, some more some less. Luckily, no person got injured from the seismic event and the very long aftershock series. An important part in the whole process after the seismic event was information flow and decision-making process. It was very important to keep workers and community informed as that contributed transparency of decision-making and decreased the speculations. Resuming the production in the damaged areas in the safe manner, very soon become main focus for the mine management. It was obvious that not only rehabilitation of the areas is needed to resume the production. It was A MUST to understand the factors behind the seismic event and its mechanism to be able to avoid same situation and prevent seismic event of similar size. Mine engineers had to think outside the box to find the solutions to ‘rescue’ every drift that they could to be able to make good enough base for continued mining of the area. The paper describes actions taken in a very complex process of recovering the area that we from the beginning thought need to be abandon. Seismological analyses of the event on May 18, 2020 and past activity in the area, damage mapping, detailed studies of structures and geology, numerical modelling as well as engineering judgement were used as base for all our decisions how to proceed in attempt to restore mining of the area heavily damaged by 4.2 moment magnitude seismic event, in a safe way.
