Video techniques for monitoring exposure, such as NIOSH’s “Helmet-CAM,” employ both real-time dust monitors and mobile video cameras to assess workers’ respirable dust exposures. Many real-time personally worn dust monitors utilize light scattering sensing elements, which are subject to measurement biases as a function of dust type (size, composition, shape factor) and environmental conditions such as relative humidity. These biased and inaccurate dust measurements impair the monitor’s ability to properly represent actual respirable dust concentrations. In the testing described, instrument mass concentration data was collected using three different types of commonly used commercial off-the-shelf personal dust monitors and compared to a reference standard. This testing was performed in a calm air (Marple) dust chamber in which three units of each make and model (for a total of nine monitors) were used for each test. Equivalency factors (EF, a multiplier to match the Thermo TEOM 1400a reference instrument) ranged between 0.746 and 1.879 across all dusts and environmental conditions tested, and between 0.821 and 1.519 on the ISO test dust.

Delineation of mining parameters, including lignite recovery factors, geotechnical factors, land control factors; ? Selection of mining blocks; ? Pit sequencing; ? Reclamation, including soil reconstruction design and land use planning; ? Overburden handling design; ? Selection of equipment; ? Sizing of equipment; ? Manpower requirements; and ? Other elements, including contract negotiations and execution, financing, investment return, operation economics, permitting and scheduling.

Native sulfur occurs with barite, celestite, and bioepigenetic calcite in the Culberson, Pokorny , and Leonard Minerals deposits, Delaware basin. The sulfur in these deposits, in "castile" masses, and in deposits of the Fort S tockton district have 6 34s values between +9 and -15. Native sulfur in the caves of the Guadalupe Mountains is somewhat lighter [(634s = -15 to -25)]. Barite in the Culberson, Leonard Minerals, and Comanche Creek sulfur deposits have 63% values of +35 to +73; celestite in the Culberson and Leonard Minerals occurrences have values of +38 and +36, respectively, and 87Sr/86Sr values of 0.707808 and 0.708138, respectively. Barite associated with sulfide, deposits, Guadalupe Mountains, have [634s] values of +41 to +62. Barite at Seven aeart Gap, Apache Mountains, is somewhat less enriched in heavy sulfur [(634s = +14 to +37)].

Recently, research efforts have been made to lower the magnesium content of phosphate rock concentrate to be a suitable feed for phosphoric acid production and other related industries. Among these efforts is the bioprocessing technique. However, this study is devoted to study of using an enzyme, extracted from coffee waste, as a surface modifier during the fatty acid flotation of calcareous phosphate rock. A mixture of oleic acid and kerosene was used as collector. Factors, which affect the enzyme activity such as enzyme dosage, solution pH, temperature and conditioning time, were studied. Under the appropriate conditions, a concentrate product containing less than 0.60% MgO was achieved from the Abu Tartur feed (1.80% MgO) with a P2O5 recovery of more than 94%.

Federally owned mineral deposits generally fall into one of three categories: (1) minerals locatable under the General Mining Law of 1872; (2) minerals leasable under the Mineral Leasing kt of 1920; and (3) minerals salable under the Materials Act of 1947. Unlike valuable deposits of gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, etc., which may be locatable, industrial minerals are acquired through a variety of methods depending on use, composition, and date of acquisition. Table 1 may be used to establish the method of acquisition for most industrial minerals.

Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, engine oil), four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperature. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

INTRODUCTION Paradoxically, it has been found that the people who are the most aware of the origin, mineralogy and composition of bauxite are also the people who are the least aware of how bauxite composition affects its treatment by the Bayer process. These people are the exploration and mining geologists normally associated with aluminum producing companies. The purpose of this paper is to give some idea of how the concentration and physical nature of the different minerals found in bauxites affect the operation of the Bayer process used to extract their alumina content. The bauxites we will consider here will be only the tropical bauxites such as occurring in Jamaica, various countries in South America i.e. Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, African bauxites, Malaysia and in Australia. When we speak of the Bayer process, it will be the North American version of the Bayer process using low caustic concentrations and bauxite digestion temperatures varying between 130° to 250°C. TABLE 1 shows the minerals and elements of interest occurring in tropical bauxites. The minerals and elements listed in the table do not by any means represent all of those identified in bauxites. Using mass spectrographic analysis on six bauxites from different geographic locations, we managed to identify between 50-60 different elements. Fortunately, only about 13-14 of these elements possess the necessary chemical properties to be able to accumulate in caustic Bayer solutions. The remainder are either not attacked, or form insoluble reaction products with some main liquor component, i.e., hydroxide, aluminate or carbonate, or reprecipitate with alumina trihydrate during the precipitation stage.

Steady-state material balances calculated from data measured at various locations around process units are useful for many purposes, such as metallurgical accounting, on-line control, and the development of mathematical models. Often it is possible to calculate material balances by several independent procedures when excess measurement information, i.e., redundant data, is available. Clearly, if the data were collected without measurement errors, a theoretical condition never found in practice, all material balances calculated from redundant data would be in agreement. The real situation is that error exists in practical measurements, so that the results of material balances determined from available optional procedures differ. Consequently, best fit computational procedures to improve the material balances by taking measurement errors into account have been formulated. Such procedures can be used also to judge whether measurements are grossly in error due to either faulty observations or defective data sensing devices. A variety of mathematical techniques are available which serve to adjust raw data. The adjusted data permit mass balancing that does not depend on the computational method. To illustrate the need for an adjustment procedure, Table 1 shows a raw data set acquired around the Brenda Mines Ltd. No. 4 grinding circuit shown schematically in Fig. 1. "The Copper Mountain Mine is located in Princeton British Columbia, Canada and produces 80 – 90 million pounds of copper annually, as well as gold and silver by-products. The ore processing plant has a conventional SAG/ball mill circuit with inline pebble crushing, followed by flotation. At most plants, much time is spent evaluating and optimizing the comminution and flotation circuits. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant: They define the circulating load in the comminution circuit and provide the classification that ensures liberated material is passed through to flotation. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput in flotation. For such an impactful unit operation, cyclones have historically been under-instrumented. Consider as well that the cyclones are typically located at the highest elevation in a plant, and it becomes clear why they often underperform. Copper Mountain Mine recognized the critical role that cyclones filled in their plant and worked to optimize their operation through the implementation of a Portage Cyclone Detection (PCD) system to identify plugging and roping incidents, Portage Pumpbox Control (PPC) to manage the flow to the cyclones, and AwaRE to control the grinding circuit. As a result, cyclones overflow stability has increased, switching out a roped or plugged cyclone now happens within seconds rather than many minutes, and both the grinding and flotation circuits perform better. INTRODUCTION Cyclones are one of the most extensively used pieces of equipment within the mineral processing industry because of their simplistic operating and maintenance philosophies. The cyclones are commonly used as classifiers within the comminution circuit to control the grinding product particle size for satisfactory performance of downstream operations. The cyclones are a key contributor to the effective operation of the plant and have a significant impact on the mineral processing plant operations. If the cyclones are not performing as they should, the results are often a combination of lost recovery, grade, capacity and reduced throughput. Similarly, an inefficient cyclone operation may also lead to low or high recirculating loads that impact the efficiency of the comminution circuit. This highlights the importance to have proper stability in cyclone operation while implementing any plant-wide optimisation strategy."

Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

n the U.S., lead has been produced via blast furnace processing for over a century, and the slags from that pyro-metallurgical process have been accumulating on industrial sites over that extended period. Lead blast furnace slags typically contain both lead and zinc compounds in an iron-silicate matrix, and it appears highly likely that such materials will have to be processed in the near future to meet with EPA regulations. Thus it is appropriate to investigate possible processing routes to render the slags non-hazardous and simultaneously to recover metal values to partially off-set the inherent high cost of processing such materials. There are two major processing alternatives: one being pyrometallurgical and the other hydrometallurgical. The research reported here investigates leaching/solution purification/recovery processes for lead and presents experimental data for the treatment of lead blast furnace slags from S.E. Missouri. The results of the research suggest that both lead and zinc can be removed effectively from the slag, and that metallic lead can be recovered directly from the organic extractant utilized for solution purification.

The solvent extraction of gold cyanide from alkaline cyanide solutions with monosubstituted guanidines, bis disubstituted guanidines and a tetrasubstituted guanidine was investigated. The guanidine functional group is protonated in alkaline solution and the guanidinium cation is stabilized so that the aurocyanide anion can be extracted even at -pH 12 if an appropriate carrier is used. Typical aprotic carriers including both aliphatic and aromatic solvents limit gold extraction by guanidines to pH 10; whereas the presence of an alcohol extends gold extraction to pH 12. UV spectroscopy suggests that the alcohol facilitates protonation of the guanidines, stabilizes the guanidinium cation, and facilitates gold extraction at high pH.

INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. Cell Quantification and Measurement of Mitogenesis Twenty-four hours after the addition of tritiated thymidine, the fibroblasts were washed with 5ml of fresh serum-free media, centrifuged and resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline. The cells were dissolved in 0.5m1 of O.1N NaOH and radioactivity determined in a beta counter. Incorporation of trititaed thymidine as an index of DNA synthesis was expressed as DPM/fibroblast. "For the first time, the influence of stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC) as a collector, on the flotation behavior of lepidolite (Uljin, South Korea) was systematically examined in Denver Sub-A cells. Flotation tests were carried out by varying amount of STAC (50–200 g/ton), feed size (-65, -100, -150, and -200 mesh), and solution pH. The impeller speed of 1000 rpm, flotation time of 10 min and AF-65 (a frother) of 250 mL/ton were invariably applied. In order to complement flotation experiments, zeta potential measurements and XRD analysis were conducted. XRD results showed that the ores were mainly composed of lepidolite, muscovite, quartz, calcite and albite. In addition, zeta potential results showed that isoelectric points were about 2.5, 2.3, and 9.7 for quartz, albite, and calcite, respectively, and lepidolite was determined to be less than 2. Overall, the results of 3-stage flotation showed that Li2O grade and recovery tended to increase with increasing STAC dosage and decreasing feed size. In addition, Li2O grade increased with decreasing pH. The results were explained by the extent of the interaction between STAC and each mineral.INTRODUCTION A great number of potential applications of lithium are being developed currently by the thermonuclear fusion power generation industry(1,2) as well as by the battery and fuel cell industry(3). Even though lithium is mainly consumed in the form of lithium metal and some lithium compounds, about 10% of total lithium production is consumed directly as mineral concentrates by the ceramic industry for the manufacture of special ceramics and mica based glass-ceramics(4). Granitic pegmatites normally contain feldspars, quartz, and mica in addition to lithium-bearing minerals such as spodumene (LiAl(SiO3)2), petalite (LiAlSi4O10), and lepidolite (KLi2Al(Al,Si)3O10(F,OH)2). The amount and grade of metallic minerals tend to gradually decrease and become lower, leading to the increase in the price of base metal or metallic compound(5). Accordingly, recent studies have been extensively devoted to developing the technique to improve the grade of metallic minerals from low grade metallic ores(6,7). Nevertheless, studies regarding the improvement of Li grade from lepidolite ores are very scarce. Lepidolite is a phyllosilicate mineral of the mica group and is often associated with other minerals such as calcite, muscovite, feldspar, and quartz, which need to be separated for lepidolite enrichment(8). Many studies have reported the flotation techniques for separating calcite, muscovite, feldspar, and/or quartz from various targeting minerals(9-11); however, there has been no attempt to investigate physico-chemical properties of lepidolite and its separation from such types of gangue minerals through flotation. Hence, in this study, for the first time, flotation has been carried out for the quaternary ammonium salts (stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC, (CH3)3CH3(CH2)16NCl))-lepidolite system based on only the electrokinetic property of minerals that consist of lepidolite ores without adding any depressant to get an initial insight on its flotation behavior. The experimental variables that influence the lepidolite flotation such as amount of collectors, feed size and solution pH have been also examined."

To provide critical scientific data and engineering guidelines to federal and state regulatory agencies as well as the coal and gas industries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a Gas Well Stability Research Program in 2016. This paper summarizes the critical scientific data acquisition, interpretation, and modeling by NIOSH regarding the stability of unconventional shale gas wells influenced by longwall mining. Currently, NIOSH is the only organization in the U.S. conducting such fundamental and impactoriented research, which receives input and collaborations from MSHA, PADEP, WVDMS, OHDNR, the coal industry, and the gas industry. Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs—which include surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation—and the parallel three-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that, under shallow and medium covers, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are one order of magnitude higher than those measured under deep cover. Casing couplers are found to play an important role in longwall-induced casing deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impact on longwall-induced casing stresses and deformations. Measured 60-arm caliper logging results are in good agreement with three-dimensional computer simulation results. Engineering guidelines on longwall-induced deformations, casing and cementing alternatives, gas well setback distances, as well as risk assessment strategy are proposed.

Historically two basic approaches of production sequencing have been formed in the theory of open pit mine design. The first approach implements a technological discretization of the pit space within the ultimate pit outlines where the minimum working width is the limiting technological factor. The second approach uses a pseudo-economic discretization based on the implementation of analytical methods for designing intermediate/ultimate pit outlines and the concept of pit shells generation. The paper offers an elaborate analysis of both approaches used currently for discretization of the geological medium into working benches and modelling the working zone of open pit mine. The analysis is extended with a new vision for unification of the mining systems in open pit mine design under the form of a classification. A comparison of the approaches is provided to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages with regard to the implementation of the principle of waste deferment as one of the main principles of mine planning that exploits the time effect of money.

Annually, the US coal industry generates and must dispose of over 200 million st (180 million t) of coal refuse, expanding a major environmental problem. The purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of utilizing coal refuse as an aggregate in concrete. This paper reports on findings of the initial phases of a project to determine the viability of replacing traditional concrete blocks with refuse blocks for use in ventilation stoppings in underground mines. Refuse, collected from three active preparation plants in eastern Kentucky, was used as the primary as aggregate in the preparation of concrete cylinder. Stress-strain analyses on the refuse cylinders yielded compressive strengths of from 59% to 77 % of the control-group strengths. Low variability within the groups was found while significant differences between the groups existed. On-going determinations of the effects of weathering on the refuse cylinders is being conducted and will be completed in early 1995. The research results are favorable for the future direction of the overall project objectives.

The rising costs for and the possibility for limited availability of electrical energy are emphasizing the continual conflict faced in the selection of comminution circuits used in preparing ores for concentration, namely; capital cost vs. operating cost. Frequently, the circuit with the lowest capital cost is not the most efficient in the use of electrical power and wear resistant materials. The simplest circuit in terms of flow, pieces of equipment and capital cost is the single stage autogenous or partial autogenous circuit used to grinding primary crusher discharge or run of mine ore to the desired product size. (Fig. 1) From this circuit, complexity increases to multi-stage crushing circuits preparing feed for multi-stage grinding circuits. Fig. 2 showing a three stage rod mill ball mill arrangement is an example of a complex grinding circuit. Stage concentration further complicates the flow. Multi-stage circuits being the most expensive to install, often give the greatest operating flexibility and offer the best possibilities for the most efficient use of available power and wear resistant materials. Within available grinding circuits, other comparisons such as high speed vs. low speed mills, grate discharge vs. overflow discharge, metal liners vs. rubber liners, high charge vs. low charge, etc. all add to the conflict
