Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. The Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa ha.d developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick's exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick's senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the fi was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period BmTick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America. This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.

An investigation was performed to determine conditions which optimize fracture formation between blastholes used for purposes of pre-splitting. Experiments-involved high-speed photography in Plexiglas models and radiographs in sandstone models. Additionail data was obtained from full-scale pre-split blasts. Pre-split fractures between blastholes were found to form as a result of gas pressure and were affected little, if any, by stress wave interactions. Pre-splitting was effective with short period delays of 25 milliseconds or less, and did not require instantaneous initiation of blastholes. During the past fifteen years significant progress has been made on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology for the extraction of gold. While most research on the mechanisms and kinetics of CIP sub-processes has focused on the adsorption step only, auxiliary unit operations such as elution have received less attention. The mathematical models which have been developed for elution at the University of Stellenbosch can be used for design as well as process optimisation by incorporation into an overall CIP simulation program. Except for these models, no other comprehensive models for the complex elution process are available. It is the aim of this paper to review recent modelling work on competitive elution from activated carbon.

The milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited has been in operation for a period of 2 years. During this time many changes, both physical and chemical, have been made in an effort to improve plant efficiency. Investigational work has been facilitated greatly by the fact that the Bicroft mill consists to a large extent of two parallel circuits; however, the number of inter-related variables is great, and it is difficult to measure, let alone control, all of them simultaneously. The Bicroft mill staff feel that much progress has been made, but there is much yet to be done and many questions still to be answered. The property of Bicroft Uranium Mines is located in Cardiff Township in the Highlands of Haliburton County, southeastern Ontario, some 140 miles northeast of the city of Toronto and 70 miles due north of Lake Ontario. The ore-bearing dikes are classed as mafic, non-segregated, syenite and granite pegmatites. Microline, microline perthite, quartz, uraninite, uranotharite, fluorite, titanite, cyrolite, calcite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and molybdenite as important accessories. The mill was designed for a nominal capacity of 1,000 tpd with all sections except grinding, leaching and clarification capable of 1,500 tons. Feed was entered to one mill unit on October 29, 1956 and to the second parallel line on November 13. The total feed rate was at 1,000 tpd on November 15. The first precipitate was produced on November 12. By August 1958 the average entry had been increased to 1,410 tpd without the installation of any additional major equipment. The overall recovery has been greater than 93,0 pet do several months, but a recovery of 92.5 pct appears to be most economical. Operating time for 8 months in 1958 has been 97.1 pet although all grinding mills were relined during this period.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.

Crocidolite is a well-known causative agent for mesothelioma. However, studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width although this has never been formally confirmed. To date, crocidolite appears to be the only asbestos mineral for which an epidemiological study comparing the risk of mesothelioma in a population exposed to ‘thin’ fibers with another exposed to ‘thick’ fibers of the same species may be carried out. Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite, and African Transvaal crocidolite can also be classified as thick fibers, and there is a paucity of mesotheliomas in populations exposed to them compared to those exposed to thin Cape crocidolite. No thin occurrences of these minerals are known. Our previous study looked at crocidolite from several sources. The present study considers the amphibole anthophyllite found in many places in the world. This mineral, regardless of source, does not show the same variation in fiber width found with crocidolite from different areas. All anthophyllite fibers that have been mined may be classified as thick and populations exposed show very low levels of mesothelioma. We suggest the most likely explanation is related to the fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Previous studies at the U.S. Bureau of Hines have shown that only 70 to 80% of the germanium in domestic zinc process residues can be extracted during H2S04 leaching. To increase germanium extraction, the Bureau developed and researched the hypothesis that minor amounts of germanium and zinc silicate, both present in zinc calcine, dissolve during the leaching stages of zinc processing, forming soluble germanium and silica gel. This silica gel then selectively adsorbs germanium from solution, rendering the germanium insoluble. Testing showed that as the amount of silica gel formed increased, the amount of insoluble germanium in the zinc residue increased. Several processing alternatives are presented for overcoming this problem.

In 1977 Kawasaki Steel Corporation (KSC) built No. 6 BF (Blast Furnace) with an inner volume of 4 500m3 as part of our program to produce 8.5 million tons of crude steel a year at Chiba Works. As the primary raw material to be used in No. 6 BF, we decided to use sintered ore, because we were confident in the obvious advantages of our technology developed by that time on sintering and BF operation using sintered ore. At Chiba Works, however, we had no space for the construction of a sinter plant, so we decided to build it abroad. Sintered ore is easily crushed and degradated. Producing sintered ore at a point far away from the blast furnace and transporting it across the ocean was the world's first attempt. To successfully realize it, we conducted a series of fundamental surveys and studies with special stress on the real aspects of degradation of sintered ore caused by long-distance transportation and handling and the ways and means to prevent the degradation. As a result, we decided to build a plant on the Mindanao of the Philippines.

To pelletize fine moist magnetite concentrate, a 40% water slurry must be dewatered to about 10% by filtration, before it can be agglomerated into pellets. Slurry pH, typically ranging from 8 to 11, gives the magnetite particle surface a strong negative charge and thus causes two adverse effects. First, this negative charge attracts calcium and magnesium cations, which strongly retard the effectiveness of the bentonite clay binder added during agglomeration. Second, a repulsive force created by the negative charge functions as a dispersant that reduces filtering production rates. Tests were conducted to remove these cations during filtration, by rinsing the moisture remaining in the filter cake with a small amount of water adjusted to pH 6 with HCl. Laboratory work was also conducted at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and at Cliff’s Mining Services Company (CMSC) to corroborate the plant tests. In some cases HCl caused filter bag blinding, therefore CO2was investigated to reduce pH. The CMSC lab tests showed that using carbon dioxide to reduce slurry pH from 7.6 to 7.0 improved filtering production rates by 11%. Plant-scale filtering rates were improved by 23.7% when carbon dioxide addition reduced the slurry pH from 8.6 to 6.7.

A new radioactive tracer method for the measurement of airflow in inaccessible airways was developed. The method can be used in situations where studies of the mine-ventilation system are not possible using conventional flowmeters (anemometers). The method was tested in the ventilation laboratory at the University of Kentucky and in the US Bureau of Mines Experimental Underground Coal Mine and was utilized in leakage, dilution and flow-velocity measurements.

The rugged foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Washington County, Southwestern Pennsylvania, lend their terrain very well to the use of aerial tram systems to carry refuse from Bethlehem Mines' two preparation plants to disposal areas some distance from the plant site. Bethlehem Nines Corporation has three deep mines in this area, all of which are mining the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, The raw coal is prepared for metallurgical use in a preparation plant at each mine, Trio of these preparation plants, Mine No, 51, Ellsworth and Mine No. 58 Marianna, use aerial tram systems to dispose of reject material.

The Finniss River system in tropical northern Australia has received 'acid-drainage' contaminants from the Rum Jungle uranium/copper mine site over the past 4 decades. Following mine-site remediation that began in 1981-82 the annual contaminant loads of sulfate, Cu, Zn and Mn have declined by factors of 3, 7, 5 and 4, respectively over 1990-93, compared to the 1969-74 pre-remediation loads. Comparison of the frequency distributions of contaminant water concentrations over these pre- and post-remedial periods have shown varying degrees of reduction in the highest levels following mine-site remediation, that are consistent with reductions in their annual-cycle loads. Among the three selected major metal contaminants the reductions in maximum water concentrations are most pronounced for Cu. The demonstrated reductions in the highest water concentrations of all four contaminants are also associated with previously reported ecological improvement in the Finniss River system, compared to the benchmark of environmental detriment established in 1973fl4, prior to the beginning of remediation at the mine site.

For many decades, a potash operation in Saskatchewan, Canada, has maintained storage impoundments for mine tailings and process-related mine water. The mine water is a concentrated aqueous solution, with most of the total dissolved solids (TDS) consisting of sodium and chloride. Although the facility has a system of slurry walls and collection/ diversion ditches, the mines monitor the surface water and groundwater around the tailings storage facilities (TSFs) for releases. Groundwater on the western side of the facility has been measured as having concentrations of TDS, magnesium, sodium, chloride and sulfate above provincial drinking water quality objectives. In addition, electromagnetic surveys have shown high electrical conductivity in that area. For these reasons, studies were undertaken to investigate the extent of the high TDS concentrations in groundwater and whether the elevated concentrations were related to the TSF. Chloride and TDS concentrations in groundwater monitoring wells were used to interpret the transport of high-TDS mine water moving along three interpreted zones of elevated TDS west from the facility (Fig. 1). The zones of elevated TDS concentrations corresponded to the areas of high conductivity identified by the geophysical surveys. These results suggested that mine water could be emanating from the TSF and potentially require remediation. However, the interpreted orientation of the high-TDS groundwater and apparent flow paths were perpendicular to the direction of groundwater flow in the area. The fundamental conflicts in these interpretations led to a reexamination of the conceptual site model for the distribution of potential mine water releases. Although the data examination and visualization made it clear that TDS concentration alone was not a reliable indicator of mine water release, there was still concern about elevated chloride concentrations. To further evaluate high TDS and chloride concentrations, several background area wells were installed northwest of the facility, beyond where mine water impacts could occur (Fig, 2). The background wells had highly variable chemical compositions. One of the wells had an elevated TDS concentration with magnesium and sulfate as the dominant ions with chloride concentrations above drinking water objectives, similar to the high-TDS wells west of the facility. The results of the background groundwater investigation (major ion chemistry) were supported by the scientific literature on prairie sloughs throughout the North American Great Plains. These sloughs are small, shallow and sometimes seasonal wetlands found throughout the region. Seasonal cycling in precipitation/ runoff and evapotranspiration result in accumulation and mobilization of salts, especially sulfate-bearing phases such as gypsum. The long-term dynamics of these features, which are common on the property west of the facility, likely control the TDS concentrations and compositions in shallow groundwater rather than mine water migration from the site. The conclusions from this investigation led to a better understanding of the lateral distribution of potential TSF-related impacts versus background groundwater chemistry. Presentation of the data, including the visualizations of different water compositions, to the provincial regulatory agency representative allowed the facility to propose an optimized annual groundwater monitoring plan with reduced sampling frequency and annual sample count. This study underscores the importance of critical evaluation and comparison of various data types, including background levels, from a particular site and the iterative approach to developing and supporting robust conceptual site models for optimizing project outcomes.

Mining is generally considered a large-scale hightech industry. However, it has estimated that about 12 million people, about 30% of the world’s total mining workforce, relied on small-scale mining for their livelihoods. During the years, the large-scale mining industry has developed best practice environmental procedures, which have been applied in diverse settings through the world. In contrast, small-scale mining is better known for its high environmental impact and the lack of safe and healthy working conditions. This paper will discuss the environmental control strategies used by the large-scale mining industry, and its applicability to small-scale mining in developing countries.

Although these exhibit similar structures overall, there are more acute valuation problems in alluvials. Most of this description will therefore be about alluvials with comments on bedded vis-a- vis alluvial deposits where necessary. Although geological comments refer mainly to lateritic deposits the method of valuation described applies to all bedded deposits, e. g. coal, limestone, phosphate. In general, the more a deposit suffers alteration during or after its formation and the more the sampling process disturbs its material, the greater the difficulties of valuation. Emphasis is laid on structure, as in any kind of deposit valuation cannot proceed until its structures are understood. Not all the structures found in alluvials will occur in bedded deposits, of course.

Soil and sands were contaminated with depleted uranium from weapons testing. This resulted in the formation of a complex mixture of uranium compounds. Characterization studies of the soil indicated the uranium was present as uranium metal, uranium oxides, silicon-bearing metallic uranium, and uranium silicates. A process was developed to selectively remove dense uranium compounds using gravity separation and a chemical extraction system to remove uranium which was not available for separation by gravity methods. Results from characterization studies and pilot scale testing are presented for background information. The primary purpose of this presentation is the report of the results achieved in the field application of the processes.
