"This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."

This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

Metal producers are now suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical downturns that often occur every five to seven years. This paper uses time-trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of metal prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

Three Federal programs exist for identifying significant environmental chemicals, including minerals, that should be tested for toxicological effects. Two programs are mandated by law and can lead to industry-funded studies; they are administered by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, respectively. The third is the National Toxicology Program, a Federally-funded testing initiative. This paper summarizes the three programs, describes their similarities and differences, and discusses their applicability to minerals.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) of the School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED), University of Alabama conducted studies to determine the potential for upgrading the Eastern Devonian shales by flotation. Results of those studies indicate that flotation concentrates containing 150 liters of oil/t (36 gal/t) can be produced from shale containing 50 liters of oil/t (12 gal/t) as determined by Fischer Assay with good recovery of the kerogen. Organic carbon and trace elements such as molybdenum, vanadium and uranium also are concentrated with the kerogen. Kerogen concentration was found to be a function of the size of grind.

High-G centrifuges from five preparation plants were sampled to determine and quantify the various operating factors affecting performance. The operating factors that were considered include feed rate and percent solids, size of feed material, screen-basket type, hardness of coal and age of the flights. The performance parameters that were measured include product surface moisture, recovery and degradation of the coal. Regression equations with good significance levels were developed.

Within the last year, the Nation has been shocked by two major tunneling disasters. Almost exactly a year ago 17 men died in the San Fernando Tunnel in an explosion attributed to gas. A few months later another 21 men died in an explosion laid to the same cause at Port Huron, Michigan. The analysis of the causes of these accidents is still continuing. While it appears that they differ substantially from each other in their specifics, they share the common trait that, like most industrial accidents, they might well have been prevented. Gas explosions in tunneling are neither new nor particularly unusual. Forty years ago, Assistant Director Jarrett was hired as a safety engineer on the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct in California after an explosion that killed 12 men. Prior to 1946, in California alone, the Bureau of Mines had recorded 27 gas explosions incidental to hard rock mining and tunneling. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of the principal regulations affecting tunneling and to indicate some ways in which safer and more healthful conditions can be obtained. The Bureau of Mines was established by an Act of Congress of May 16, 1910. Since that time the Bureau has been making investigations and compiling and publishing health and safety data relating to mining and to tunneling. If any benefit is to come from an anaylsis of tunneling accidents, it must be the knowledge needed to prevent their repetition. The Bureau of Mines has also had informal discussions with the Department of Labor regarding the possibility of the Bureau's assuming that agency's responsibility for tunnel inspections.

"Ongoing research is being conducted to evaluate secondary support performance in longwall ventilation entries. In a three-entry longwall gateroad, secondary supports are applied in the #2 entry to maintain a functional airway for the entirety of second panel mining. This airway represents a pathway for contaminated mine air to travel from the longwall tailgate to the mine bleeder system. The ground response curve concept may be used as a design basis for selection of appropriate secondary support in these ventilation entries. Two types of secondary supports are monitored for load and convergence in this project. These monitored supports are pumpable crib supports and interlocking wood crib supports. To evaluate the effect of support density, two installation patterns are monitored for each support type. Both a single-row, protected airway pattern and double-row, full entry support pattern are monitored for each support type. Load and displacement data is collected for all support patterns as second panel mining retreats past instrumentation sites. Data is collected for approximately 200-feet inby the second panel face or as long as safely possible. Load and convergence data collected will be used to calibrate numerical models that will simulate ground response curves for the #2 entry inby the second panel face.INTRODUCTIONWhen a bleeder ventilation system is used, the #2 entry of a three-entry longwall gateroad system is designed to function as a pathway for contaminated air from a longwall face to the bleeder system during second panel mining. The #2 entry is subject to substantial ground movement and loading during its function as an air course because it is a single entry between two longwall gobs. Secondary support is regularly applied in this entry to maintain air course functionality during second panel mining.Research on performance and design of secondary supports has been conducted extensively over the last 30 years (Barczak and Gearhart, 1993; Barczak and Gearhart, 1994; Mucho, Barczak, and Dolinar, 1999). This research has focused heavily on the application of secondary support in longwall tailgate, with little research on the application of secondary support in bleeders or other ventilation entries (Mirabile and Westman, 2018). Secondary supports in #2 entry are likely to experience similar loading and ground movement as those applied in the tailgate entry. However, the designed lifespan of the mine entry and the definition of acceptable ground conditions differs from mine entries where more extensive research has been conducted."

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has investigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (=1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars be provided only in mines =1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines =1 .22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The design of a mine or any underground opening in rock is similar to the design of any other structure, such as a building or a bridge, in one important way. This similarity lies in the fact that the stability of the structure is a function of the loads that will be applied during the structure's expected lifetime. In the case of an underground opening, the applied load is the product of the existing in situ stress field and the concentration of this field that is produced by the extraction of a load¬bearing material. Thus, a knowledge of the in situ stress field is considered a basic requirement in the design process and essential to the eventual stability of the underground structure (Duvall, 1976; Obert, 1972; Merrill and Peterson, 1961; Dahl and von Schonfeldt, 1976; Hedley and Wilson, 1975). The in situ stress field can be used along with the physical properties of the rock masses involved, the ge¬ometry of the various rock types, the geometry of the openings involved, and a failure criterion to evaluate structural stability of a planned mine by theoretical or numerical techniques. This same information can be used to investigate ground control problems in existing mines. In situ rock stress determinations can be separated into three categories: the determination of applied stress, also called the absolute or field stress; the deter¬mination of concentrations of the field stress near open¬ ings; and the determination of changes in rock stress as load-bearing material is removed. The applied stress field is more difficult to determine than are stress changes. Various instruments and techniques have been developed to determine applied rock stress and stress changes in rock. ABSOLUTE OR FIELD STRESSES Theoretical Considerations In the absence of actual measurements, it is often assumed that at any point, the vertical stress is equal to the weight of the overlying material. [ ] where S„ is vertical stress, S is average weight density of overburden rock, and h is depth from the surface. This is normally consistent with actual experience. The horizontal stresses are assumed to be equal and related to the vertical stress through the Poisson effect. [] where Sh is horizontal stress, S„ is vertical stress, and v is Poisson's ratio. The derivation of Eq. 2 is dependent on lateral con¬finement of the rock mass. An increasing amount of information is rapidly becoming available which indi¬cates that the in situ stress field at a particular location cannot simply be assumed to be a gravity-induced stress distribution in which the secondary principal stresses in the horizontal plane are due to confinement and Pois¬son's effect. Rather they can be a complex function of gravity loading, regional stresses, structural features, ex¬cavation geometries, and variations in surface and/or possibly basement rock topography. Furthermore, the underground principal stress dis¬tribution is not necessarily vertical and horizontal as is often assumed. The deviation of the three-dimensional stress distribution from vertical and horizontal can be due to a combination of both topographic (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972) and structural features.

The advance of science and technology influences the modern economy in countless ways. Older industries must adapt to changes in the marketplace, while new industries are born by applying new technology to meet consumer needs. In light of declining head grades and increased unit costs in the US minerals industry, new technological developments in the production environment are paramount to maintaining a competitive footing in the international marketplace. Micro-engineering research provides the transition between the knowledge base and the application of new technology on the production level. Economic considerations The primary goal of technical development in the production environment is to reduce unit operating costs. Simply stated, this is accomplished by improving operating efficiencies and productivities on the production level. The goal of micro-engineering research in the production environment is to evaluate promising technologies and develop the criteria necessary to apply them in operations. As such, this process is the first step toward innovation and discovery. Generally, the micro-engineering research is followed by macro-engineering development. In the production environment, there are generally more development projects than can be accomplished in a timely manner. Usually, this is the result of financial and human resource limitations. Consequently, it is necessary to prioritize the work such that the most beneficial projects are accomplished first. By performing a discounted cash flow analysis and using benefit-cost ratios (for non-mutually exclusive alter¬natives) or net present value criteria (for mutually exclusive alternatives), the projects can be rated from best to worst. In this way, the financial and human resources can be best allocated to first complete those projects giving the highest returns before moving on to other activities. Moreover, this information is a prerequisite for management to justify additional financial or human resources.

Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

There is a broad range of chemical reagents of potential use to the coal preparation industry: flotation frothers, flotation collectors (for coal, ash minerals or pyrite) and collector-assisting (conditioning) agents, flotation depressants (for coal, ash minerals or pyrite), pH regulating agents, acid mine drainage treatment chemicals, flocculants, filtration aids, dispersants, dust suppressants (wetting agents and car-top or pile binders), freeze conditioning agents, water treatment chemicals (corrosion and scale inhibitors) and suspension stabilizing reagents (dispersants, stabilizers, biocides). The application of each of these types is discussed with particular attention paid to those of greatest importance: flotation frothers and collectors, pH regulators and acid mine drainage treatment chemicals, flocculants and freeze conditioning agents.

A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. It makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery data to gravity recoverable gold (GRG) to predict overall recovery. The methodology is designed for gravity circuits located in the circulating load of secondary grinding mills. Gold liberation is estimated by processing a sample of representative ore with a laboratory Knelson Concentrator (LKC) in three successive steps, each at a finer grind than the previous one. Breakage behaviour is represented by a matrix H, which redistributes GRG in the feed of the secondary mill in the various size classes of its discharge. Provision is also made to account for gold overgrinding, which decreases the overall amount of GRG. Classification, pre-concentration and recovery data are estimated from plant performance, and are represented by the diagonal matrices C, P and R. The methodology is demonstrated with case studies of greenfield, retrofit and optimization applications.

Abrasion is an important mode of performance for any element of an engineered product that involves material contact for example, a conveyor belt cover. Abrasion resistance is considered to be one of the leading factors in belt cover design and improvement. Various types of abrasion testing are reviewed by and compared to actual belt applications. A new quantitative screening torsional abrasion test is developed by Goodyear to mimic a dynamic contact between belt cover and differently shaped stones of various weights dropped onto belt at any angle, velocity and height.

This paper describes a procedure for minimizing the operational costs associated with blending sodium in coal at a surface mine in the Powder River Basin. Mine site blending is performed by adjusting daily production rates for high- and low-sodium pits. These adjustments are designed to produce a consistent sodium value called the blending target. The mine&apos;s contractual limit for sodium is sufficiently close to the field average value that any decrease in the sodium blending target may result in an opportunity cost, if the number of potentially minable tons is reduced. Conversely, any increase in the blending target may result in a higher sampling cost if more information is required to keep the blend within contractual limits. Blending parameters were defined using a geostatistical block model of sodium content that was based on analyses of hundreds of in-pit sample holes. Variograms for these data were used to compute the marginal costs of opportunity and sampling for a series of hypothetical in-pit drilling patterns. These marginal costs provided a basis for selecting optimum values for key parameters such as the blending target, production variance and in-pit sampling density. The benefit of implementing these optimized parameter values is that operational costs of sodium blending will be minimized over the long-term. At the mine where this procedure was developed, each dollar spent to increase the sampling density to the optimum value was shown to generate a $10 savings in opportunity cost.

"Mining is the main activity that supports civilization. Actual mining presents contradictory concept to the health of the planet. Its business model is linear, fragmented and characterized by inefficiencies in the utilization of water, energy and mineral resources which generate waste and pollution. Before mining begins, it is critical to determine the vulnerability of the ecosystem and after mining, it is critical to determine the depletion of nature. Attending to these vital matters will require quantifying and measuring them. The purpose of this study is to provide and establish the metric to assess the performance and manage a sustainable future for our existence and that of our planet. This index is defined to measure and control Nature Friendly Sustainability (NFS) based on understanding nature. This index will determine the condition of nature constructed on the measurement of physical, chemical and biological equilibrium. Proposing a new mindset for mining design to satisfy nature’s needs would be to offer the same opportunities to future generations. Hence, sustainability is synonymous with equilibrium under a limited ecosystem. Nature is interconnected. Finally, this index of NFS is readable, standardized and relevant to keep nature’s needs in equilibrium. Establishing and NFS index is the next metric for humanity. INTRODUCTION There are a multitude of definitions of what sustainability is. Most of them are defined in terms of the corporate entity from which they emanate. The classical definition of management states that, “if we do not measure it, we cannot manage it.” Management of ecosystems is the definition of sustainability. Indicators of quantity and quality of sustainability are vital in order to create a metric for sustainability. These indicators will measure the depletion and degradation of nature as they occur through human intervention. The first step is to create a metric of sustainability to simplify its definition. The definition of sustainability is based on whether or not you consider nature to be finite or infinite, which is described in Nature Friendly Sustainability (NFS) [1]. The definition of NFS applies to any anthropogenic activity with an understanding of the equivalent activity in nature. That is to say, human activity with nature requires balance and equilibrium in order to be sustainable. The importance of this equilibrium is quantified in a set of metrics in order to establish measurement and acknowledge indicators for our dependence on nature. Sustainability is synonymous with equilibrium in any ecosystem that is limited and fragile. In the graph is the explanation of sustainability definition. See Graph 1"

J. Dasher Having an interest in coal slurry pipelines from a decade of arguments with Ed Wasp and crew at Bechtel about pumping thicker slurries slower, I immediately read this article and found nothing in it pertinant to the title. Ayat and Scott pumped five unidentified coals at 9% solids (50%-60% is the area of interest) in a 25-mm (1-in.) pipe around two square elbows through a 76-mm (3-in.) cyclone for up to 60 minutes and sized a large number of samples of unstated size on an unidentified wet screening device. They did not measure power consumption, discharge pressure, flow rate, or give pump tip speed or impeller diameter. They siad the cyclone had a "high" pressure drop (unmeasured) and did much of the degradation (measured) but more or less per unit of energy expended? Hargrove was not measured, so there are no data as to whether it would correlate with degradation. The authors conclude, with no attempt, correlation is "hard to establish." Please experiment before concluding. I am at a loss to know what "increasingly smaller size" means, much less what theory says such particles take "exponentially larger quantities of energy," which the authors neglected to measure. If such experiments without pertinent data or justified conclusions must be published, please attach a pertinant title. reply by M. G. Ayat The first and the last criticism of this paper is that the work is not pertinent to the title. Anybody who reads this article will immediately realize that the work describes the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes in coal slurry pipes and pumps. If this is so, why not title the work "Degradation process in coal slurry pipelines"? What could be more pertinent to this title than the investigation concerning the degradation phenomenon of coal particles in a pipe carrying a coal slurry? Mr. Dasher complains that he does not understand the meaning of the term "increasingly smaller size." The first sentence of this article defines the degradation process as "the breakage of coal particles to increasingly finer sizes." The term "increasingly finer sizes" here means successive breakage of a fine particle to finer and finer sizes. According to Hukki (Hukki, 1975), the probability of breakage is high for large particles and rapidly diminished for fine sizes. We apologize for being brief about some of these definitions. The degradation process, breakage of particles to increasingly finer sizes, is so widespread in the mineral industry that we did not feel it necessary to bore the reader with lengthy definitions of some simple terms. Mr. Dasher states that the coals examined and their original size consist are unidentified. Please look at Table I and Table 2 in the paper again where you will find the original size consist of the coals examined and their full specifications. We only named the coals A, B, C, D, and E to avoid identifying the coal seams that were more susceptible to degradation. Not identifying the name of the wet screening device used in this work has also been criticized. In our opinion, wet screening operation is such a routine and standard procedure that naming the device by which the screening is performed would serve no purpose but to promote a sales approach. This was not our intention. We did not conclude that the correlation between the degradation process and Hardgrove Grindability Index is hard to establish as Mr. Dasher writes in his letter. We stated, not concluded, that "It is reasonable to assume that some relationship between the extent of degradation and its physical properties, such as Hardgrove Grindability Index, does exist. However, any definite correlation is difficult to establish." This statement is based on other researchers work, which are clearly referenced in the article. The conclusions of this paper were based solely on the findings of the experimental work. As for the theory of comminution that Mr. Dasher asks, we would like to refer him to some basic comminution books and articles where various theories are clearly described. For example, Hukki (Hukki, R.T.,"The Principles of Comminution; An Analytical Summary," Eng. These and many other relevant publications explain the relationship between the particle size and energy much better that what can be said in this short reply. We will, however, agree with Mr. Dasher on one particular point. We, too, believe that if the investigation concerning the degradation process in coal slurry pipeline were to be pursued further, one could choose to determine one or more of the variables available in the process, such as discharge pressure, power consumption, percent solid, pipe diameter, etc.
