Small seams of fibrous tremolite and actinolite commonly occur in many California counties. A number of larger seams of this fibrous material were mined from 1882 until about 1955. The fibers from these mines were used for making acid filters, battery cases and fire-resistant paint. With increasing population, new residential areas are being developed in the foothill regions, leading to increased contact with seams of fibrous amphiboles. These forms of asbestos can be particularly dangerous to human health. Thus, it is necessary to determine the locations of these mines and adjacent veins and to identify the specific amphibole minerals present.

The conventional role or exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Mine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years.

The selection of a mining method for a particular deposit must be based on certain technical and economic criteria. This can be interpreted as maximizing extraction and productivity while maintaining safe working conditions and minimum costs. The methodology developed here examines some of these aspects. The proposed methodology was tested on copper deposits that could be mined by underground stoping methods such as sublevel stoping, cut-and-fill stoping and their variants. In general, it provides a practical approach to both method selection and optimum stope design for base-metal deposits.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency(MIGA) is part of the World Bank Group, and has as its mission the facilitation of foreign direct investment by providing political risk insurance (guarantees) to foreign investors and lenders. As a development institution, MIGA is required to ensure that the projects that it insures will bring development benefits to the host country. Demonstration of this includes review and analysis of the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment. Environmental guidelines and policies developed by the World Bank Group are important components both in analyzing the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment and in risk management. MIGA has recently formalized and adopted environmental assessment and disclosure policies. The approach taken by MIGA to environmental review of investments and implementation of these policies is described in this paper.

INTRODUCTION Underground mines in many parts of the world have elevated levels of short-lived 222Rn daughters. Lung cancer implicating exposure to short-lived daughters is documented in the U.S., Czechoslovakia, Canada, Sweden, the U.K., France and Newfoundland. An elevated lung cancer mortality (in excess of that expected) has been observed when cumulative exposure to alpha emitting short-lived 222Rn daughters (218Po, 214pb 214Bi 214Po) is greater than about 60 working level months (WLM) [1]/ (Hewett, D. 1979). This is equal to an absorbed alpha dose of about 30 rads to shallow basal cells in bronchial epithelium. Long-lived alpha emitters are also present in underground mines, and especially uranium mines because of airborne particulates containing uranium. The 238U parent of this primordial series supports other long-lived emitters 234U 230Th, 226Ra, Pb(210Po) which are in some degree of radioactive equilibrium with the parent 238U. Airborne particulates can be present due to drilling on the face of the ore body as well as in all parts of the mine through resuspension from the mine floor. Particles from 1 µm to about 5 µm penetrate the nose with reasonable efficiency and deposit primarily in the tracheobronchial tree. They are removed by ciliary motion (the bronchial escalator) but deliver an alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium during clearance in the same manner as short-lived 222Rn daughters. It is the purpose of this work to indicate the alpha dose to basal cells in bronchial epithelium delivered by the long-lived emitters 234, 238U. The dose calculations reported here based upon a few measured values of these isotopes in air in uranium mines in New Mexico and Colorado. MEASURED 234, 238U IN URANIUM MINE ATMOSPHERES In 1979, the U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a study to evaluate personal monitors to be worn by miners to measure short-lived 222Rn daughters. One of these devices sampled air at 100 cm3/min through a 13 mm glass fiber filter, with a small pump worn on the belt. Alpha particles emitted by 222Rn daughters on the filter were measured continuously by a thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chip. Each monitor was worn by a miner for a 170 hour working month and approximately one cubic meter of air was sampled during this period. Six different mines were selected for the test in New Mexico and Colorado. The mines used either wet or dry drilling methods. Miners in each location were equipped with the personal monitors. Subsequent to their use in evaluating the shortlived daughters, Dr. Robert Droullard of the Bureau generously gave us these filter samples along with a few blank glass fiber filters from the same box of filters used in the study so that long-lived emitters present in these mine atmospheres could be determined radiochemically. Four of the samples have been run for 234, 238U. The radiochemical procedure for uranium is adapted from USDOE, Environmental Measurements Laboratory Manual (Harley, J.H., 1976). Briefly, the samples were placed in platinum crucibles, spiked with 232U tracer and pretreated with nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The residue was fused with potassium fluoride to transpose to pyrosulfate. The fused cake was dissolved in 7 [N] hydrochloric acid and the solution passed through an anion exchange column to isolate uranium. Iron was removed using mercury cathode electrolysis. Uranium was electrodeposited onto platinum dies and counted using solid-state alpha spectrometry. The samples from each type of mine (wet and dry) were analyzed. The samples in the "wet" mine in New Mexico were selected on the basis of the original TLD measurement because they were near the maximum occupational standard for radon daughters. These samples should also represent upper limits to longlived activity encountered, since they were obtained at drilling operations on the face of the ore body. Samples collected in the "dry" mine in Colorado were pot associated with a particular location in the mine and should be representative of a month long overall exposure in many locations and operations. Labor costs, which have rapidly increased in the industrial countries for several years, have forced the mining industry to develop new methods and cost saving systems. Also, because mining is basic to meeting the increasing requirements for raw materials, the mining industry is guaranteed a key position in cost cutting efforts. Although this report aims to describe major recent developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, it is restricted to a limited number of them in view of the wide variety of current innovations. The most important mining activities in West Germany are concentrated in the coal mines on the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar, in the lignite open-cast mines west of Cologne and in the potash and salt mining region in Lower Saxony and Hesse. This report will only discuss developments in the underground coal mines and the potash and salt mines, and focuses on projects of Salzgitter Maschinen and Anlagen AG (SMAG). HYDRAULIC DRILLS Drilling strata of varying strength One special difficulty faced in European coal mines is the varying of compressive strength of strata that occurs even over a few meters. The strata associated with the coal measures ranges from hard and tough sandstone or conglomerate to very soft carboniferous shale. It is often difficult to use continuous miners or roadheaders so that drifting by blasting still predominates. But the varying compressive strengths of the strata makes it difficult to choose the best method to drill the rock. For example, it is best to penetrate hard sandstone or conglomerate with heavy percussion drills. The soft carboniferous shale on the other hand, should be penetrated by high speed rotary drilling to obtain optimum performance.

As part of a cooperative effort between the US Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates a thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), which is then oxidized using a catalyst to produce elemental sulfur. The paper summarizes the results of continuing laboratory studies using an activated carbon catalyst which was loaded with sulfur through oxidation of ammonium bisulfide solution. The extraction of the sulfur that forms in situ on the catalyst is a key area in the development of the sulfur recovery process. Two approaches for removing the sulfur are being investigated: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur. and (2) leaching the sulfur using liquid anhydrous ammonia. The research has shown that it is technically feasible to recover over 90% of the sulfur from the carbon by either volatilization or ammonia leaching. Locked cycle testing has demonstrated that the carbon has the potential to be recycled after ammonia leaching.

Nearly 30 estimates of the minimum earth stress were obtained from hydraulic stimulation tests in 5 boreholes at depths varying from 0.6 to 4.3 km in jointed granitic rock near the Valles Caldera in New Mexico. This site is located within the transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range provinces. Stresses were determined from open hole hydraulic fracturing experiments conducted with water at pressures up to 48.3 MPa (surface). The virgin bottomhol e temperatures ranged up to 327°C. Pressure records show no evidence of rock breakdown, indicating injection into pre-existing joints. A typical pressure response consists of an early wellbore storage period followed by linear fracture flow, which then evolves into a steady pressure, fracture extension mode. Shut-in behavior is characterized by a sharp pressure drop followed by a more gradual decay. The minimum earth stress shows a general linear trend with depth, increasing with a gradient of 19 MPa/km. A low stress anomaly occurs from 2490 to 3100 m where the minimum stresses are as much as 28 MPa lower.

The number of uranium in situ leach operations has increased significantly since 1975. As of May, 1980, there were a total of 27 active projects, including 16 commercial scale operations (or under construction) and 11 pilot scale operations. The south Texas uranium district and Wyoming have been the most prominent areas in early field experiments as well as in commercial application of this new recovery technique, although in situ leach tests are now being conducted in Colorado and New Mexico. The growing number of commercial-scale operations is accepted as prima facie evidence that in situ mining now offers a third option along with open pit and underground mining for winning uranium from sandstone host rocks. It is estimated that in 1979 about 9 percent of the nation's total uranium production was from in situ mining. However in situ mining of uranium is not without its environmental controls. The primary emphasis of environmental controls falls into two catagories; namely, control of the leach solutions during mining and demonstration of ground water restoration. Finally this paper briefly reviews the Bureau of Mines research program in uranium in situ mining.

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, i.e., the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 3.175 or 4.775 mm (0.125 or 0.188 in.). Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuli of 3.175 and 2.413 mm (0.125 and 0.095 in.) resisted an average of 0.08 t/grouted mm (2.25 st/grouted in.) with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased.

Developed in 1983, high angle conveyors - HAC®s are proven versatile systems for elevating materials continuously from a lower to an upper level. Such systems may also be used to lower materials continuously. HAC®s have found commer­cial application in widely varying materials (including coal, refuse, coarse ores [-250 mm], hot clinker, municipal sludge, wood chips, gypsum, slag, excavated earth, various grains and RDF), at widely varying throughput rates from 0.27 to 4250 t/h. The conveying profiles have varied widely and elevating heights range from 3.66 m to 175 m. HAC®s have found application in coal, copper and iron mining, and preparation, in municipal waste treatment, rapid transit projects, pulp and paper mills, cement plants and in gold mining. While noting a wide variety of applications in general, the present writing focuses on Newmont Gold's HAC®, near Carlin, Nevada, which elevates very coarse gold ore to the screening plant. Additionally, upcoming HAC® applications in gold mining are discussed and a proposed multi-flight vertical HAC® system from a deep underground mine is described.

"The ground water heat pump system lades underground hot water which can be heated or cooled by heat exchanger in water source heat pump air conditioner. This system replaces the model of heating of air-conditioning by refrigerator and boiler. In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Development and utilization of renewable energy has become an important direction. Water source heat pump technology is to use solar energy stored in water as cold/heat source to convert energy. Currently, this technology has been widely used in some advanced countries. However, due to facers of implementation technology and component costs, there is still a gap in water source heat pump technology between China and these advanced countries. According to (Blum et al 2011) that after in-depth study, water source heat pump technology has developed rapidly in China recently, and the gap is gradually reduced. Groundwater source heat pump system as a kind of high efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology in recent years, more and more get the people's attention. At the same time, its practical application has also been rapid development. Based on (Ni et al 2015) that According to the relevant departments of the prediction, the technology will become the 21st century the most efficient heating and cooling technology."

Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. Respirable dust produced during blasting is best considered as an initial value problem (IVP). To derive a mathematical model, the following assumptions are made: •At time zero (t = 0), the dust source is at point x = 0 of an infinite drift. •The problem is considered a one-dimensional case. •The mean velocity of air and the diffusion coefficient are constant. •There is no source or sink of dust other than specified at point x = 0 and time t = 0. Mining geometrical graphic documentation is employed on a large scale in designing and planning of mining operations at all the stages of exploitation. Mining geometrical modelling of mineral grade distribution presents an independent type of mathematical (graphic) modelling. The idea of functional relationship between geological indices being observed, and spicier coordinates is the basis of traditional mining geometrical modelling. Graphic presentation of three independent variables P =f (x,y,z) is confined to obtaining the series of two independent variables functions. Independent variables are presented as topographic surfaces corresponding to plane cross-sections of a deposit. During exploitation of certain parts of a deposit the most reliable geological information is obtained, characterizing regularities of ore distribution in the entrails. This information is, though, not taken into account in goemetrization of the new areas. In this connection dynamic modelling of deposits in the process of exploitation is necessary, i.e. geometrization of the deposits should be dynamic.

At Monterey Coal&apos;s No. 1 Mine in central Illinois, it became necessary to predict if the sulfur content of individual trainloads of coal would exceed a contract sulfur maximum. Using geostatistics and Monte Carlo-type simulations, a forecasting procedure was developed to meet this need. The developed procedure predicts the monthly, mean sulfur content of the coal shipped and the probability of individual shipments exceeding the contract limit. During the first five months of using this procedure, the forecasted, monthly mean sulfur value was within 0.03% of actual. This represents a significant improvement over the inverse-distance, gridding-based, forecasting used previously.

An oxidized gold/silver ore from Mexico has been evaluated at Lakefield Research in order to develop an economically viable treatment flowsheet for the recovery of gold and silver. Initial cyanidation test results indicated that at least 20 kg/t cyanide was required for maximum gold and silver extractions, due to high cyanide consumption by an oxidized zinc mineral present in the ore. A process was developed for the recovery and recirculation of the cyanide from the leach liquors. The proposed flowsheet included direct cyanidation, CCD and Merrill-Crowe, followed by precipitation of the zinc associated with cyanide with sodium sulphide and recycling of the regenerated cyanide liquor to the leach circuit. The process was demonstrated during a continuous pilot plant. A mill has been erected recently in Mexico and has been operating using this flowsheet.

Flotation processes contain disturbances which make material balance closures difficult to achieve. Lack of closure also arises from instrument errors. A portion of these problems can be overcome by proper equipment selection; the primary measurement installation and methods of initial data filtering are discussed below. The problem of data adjustment has been considered before (2). The technique described here is essentially that of Ripps (2). The technique was expanded to include linearization of non-linear material balance equations. An additional large error detection portion was also added to Ripp&apos;s formulation. Ripp&apos;s technique is based on a Lagrange-Multiplier optimization method. The Lagrange-Multiplier technique is generally applied when there are equality constraints on the variables. Steady-state material balance equations fit in this category. The basic Lagrange-Multiplier method is described. It is followed by a description of the modified material balance data adjustment technique. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this method.

Copper mining is the main activity in Zambia and is confined to the large scale operations, mainly on the Copperbelt. The Copperbelt covers an area of size l00km by 50 km with a total of 10 underground and 5 open-pit mines operated by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) Limited. Most of the operations in these mines involves drilling and blasting. The loading of broken materials is by both manual and mechanical operations. Among the many risk factors associated with mining on the Copperbelt, is the occurrence of Pneumoconiosis which in the recent past has become quite prevalent and thus an important occupational health hazard for the industry. This study was carried out with the aim of establishing trends of pneumoconiosis incidence through the annual data collected by Pneumoconiosis Medical and Research Bureau of the Ministry of Health in Zambia, so that a basis could be formed for future research work. The study covers over 1,000 certified cases of Pneumoconiosis between 1960 and 1990
