The consistent occurrence of organic carbon early in the paragenesis of Mississippi Valley-type sulfide deposits suggests a genetic link between organic carbon and the sulfide ores. Reduction of sulfate in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is commonly proposed as the precipitation mechanism for these deposits, but inorganic sulfate reduction is too slow to be important to the chemistry of the ore zone, and bacteria, which catalyze sulfate reduction at low temperatures, are not known to survive at the temperatures of mineralization. Sulfate reduction with or without bacteria is not consistent with the sulfur Isotope evidence. Sulfur isotope studies also indicate that the derivation of sulfur from hydrocarbon at the sites of mineralization is unlikely. Organometallic complexing may be involved in the transport of metals, but no plausible mechanism for breaking these complexes at the sites of mineralization has been proposed. Reduction of partly oxidized sulfur species in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is a possibility which deserves further scrutiny.

Besides the conservation and closing activities, an important issue to achieve is the environmental rehabilitation of the mining perimeters, also assuring the continuity and sustainable development of the mining activity in the Jiu Valley. Modifying and depleting the soils by mining works and dumps of mineral waste as a result of coal mining and tailing is one of the important aspects. The paper’s aim is to analyze which are minerals and resources policies of our government and to adopt measures for sustainable development in the coal mining in this region. The measures to reduce the instability risk for the mining works and waste dumps, which could affect the underground mining constructions or the related surface areas, were consider. It is most important to establish the priorities in order to obtain a high efficiency by combining the measures according to the environmental analysis and risk assessment.

Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, detect hazardous ground conditions, and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep (> 1220 m) underground pillars. If high-stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or avoided. High-stress areas can be monitored with successive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where development can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as monitor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer environment.

Introduction Mining has always been sensitive to the fluctuating income of downstream customer industries. The industry is now becoming more vulnerable to booms and busts as economic pulsations increase and demand for mining products shows little or no long-term growth. As the general economy has become more cyclical in the last decade, the capital-intensive primary industries have become more aware that timing as well as preparation of survival plans are vital in investment decisions. Strangely, however, some of us have not yet included the business cycle in our feasibility studies. Cyclic prices and volumes and fluctuations in profits and cash flows do not fit our linear models. The increased cyclical nature of our economy is recent and poorly understood. Forecasting peaks and troughs is still more an art than a science. Nevertheless, avoiding business cycle parameters can lead to error in value estimation and contingency planning of new projects. Metal and Mineral Industries More than half the iron and steel, aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, tin, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and chrome that we mine, smelt, upgrade, and recycle goes to construction, transportation, capital goods, and consumer durable industries. All are cyclical. Their products are consumed slowly, so replacement can be postponed in recessions. Purchases of such goods are usually financed by debt, and their customers are sensitive to highly cyclical changes in interest rates. During prosperous periods, people tend to buy capital goods despite high interest rates. Upstream industries also tend to be whipsawed by inventory cycles. With high interest rates and good transportation, downstream fabricators can lighten their inventories during recessions. They know that upstream suppliers can deliver supplies and raw materials immediately, And, with the advent of electronic accounting, the fabricator with timely inventory information can afford to hold fewer contingency stocks. Likewise, when recovery returns, inventories surge back through industry pipelines, accelerating demands on primary supplies. The price elasticity of most primary products is low. Their share of the value of finished products of the industries they supply is generally small. The 60 kg (130 lb) of aluminum in a car is vital. But whether it costs $80 or $130 will not visibly influence the demand for an automobile. With low elasticities of demand, the primary producer is hit with decreases (or increases) in prices and in sales volume, during recessions as well as recoveries.

We have worked on several flooded pits from coal-mining activities in the former East Germany, as well as ones associated with hard- rock mining, including the B-zone pit discussed in the above technical paper. We found the paper to be a useful summary, but, unfortunately, it failed to give an adequate comparison of the physical limnology of the flooded pits, which is an essential component. While the title suggests that the primary focus of the review is physical limnology, it appears that it is essentially pit-lake chemistry being presented. Physical limnology requires that factors such as fetch, latitude, light penetration, relation to ground water table, methods of flooding and the physical shape of the pits be defined. These physical aspects of a pit interact with the chemical and biological processes taking place in it, all of which contribute to the character of a water body. Few of these physical aspects are presented, however. The conclusion that the authors reach suggests that meromixis may be a condition that would serve as an effective containment mechanism for contaminants in a pit. Although this may be desirable, such limnological conditions are not clearly supported by the data presented for any of the pits. These data should be summarized to facilitate comparison between the same structural units of the pit water - the epi- and metalimnion for example. The thermocline depth is a reflection of the physical forces mixing the water body, and pit dimensions affect these forces. Due to the use of different scales in Figs. 2 through 5, it is difficult to determine whether the thermocline is at the expected depth, because the fetch is not given. Moreover, the status of a water body cannot be determined unless measurements cover a period of at least one year, and depth profiles are completed to represent the entire depth of the pit. This shortcoming is most notable in the case of the Berkeley pit, where data are given for depths of only 20 and 35 m (66 and 115 ft), although the pit is reported to be 242 m (794 ft) deep. Limnological data to define the status of the pit water have to be collected at regular intervals, for the same parameters. The authors present temperature measurements for 1-m (3.3-ft) intervals, but fail to use that interval for other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen or, in some cases, for contaminant concentrations. Furthermore, the profiles for the deepest part of the pit display only part of the picture, because pits are rarely conical. Profiles can be considered to represent the status of a water body only after other stations in the pit have been monitored regularly and the consistency is determined. For example, fresh water, which can enter a pit at any depth, would interfere with the proposed meromictic conditions. Similarly, organic material at the bottom of a pit, such as the fish-waste deposited in the Gunnar pit, contribute to oxygen consumption. Oxygen depletion alone is not indicative of meromixis. It is interesting to note that the Dpit arsenic concentrations could possibly be slightly higher than the B-zone pit concentrations at depth, although this is difficult to determine accurately when a log scale is used for the D-pit and not for the B-zone pit. In our investigations, we noted arsenic removal in the B-zone pit bottom water, which was due to the formation of particles that are relegated to the newly forming sediment in the bottom of the pit. Particle-carrying contaminants form due to a combination of geochemical and biological factors and TSS contributed from erosion of the upper parts of the pit walls, whereas the settling out of particles from the water column is controlled by the physical conditions or turn over, for example. during ice cover in the B-zone pit. Although meromictic conditions for flooded pits may be desirable at decommissioning, this would depend largely on the physical conditions of the pit, because, under no circumstances, would this water be of desirable ground-water quality. Under meromictic conditions, acidity, if an environmental issue, may be reduced by microbial acid-neutralizing activity, and several heavy metals may form more or less stable sulphitic compounds. These may stay suspended in the water if conditions are such that they are not relegated to the sediments, i.e., in the absence of turnover. These processes do not take place in meromictic conditions only, but meromixis does require autochthonous and/or allochthonous organic substrate supplies, which are generated under aerobic conditions. An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

This paper presents an overview of some of the basic issues related to tunnel construction in the presence of flammable and toxic strata gases. Gas properties and possible sources are outlined for the various gases that are commonly encountered underground. Assessment of potential gas hazards prior to construction is discussed. Measures for mitigating the problem during construction are summarized. This RETC Session on Gassy Ground has been organized by the Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC), Technical Committee on Gassy Tunnels.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator was granted in 1881 in the U.S. this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with the development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generating, despite the low heating value of German lignite in the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 BTU/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is in the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite. These cost advantages for lignite in Germany are due mainly to the concentration of lignite mining in a few high-output open pit mines. The largest one, Fortuna Mine in the Cologne district, produced a, total of 45 000 000 t lignite in 1976. That equals the annual fuel need of a 5750 MW power plant running 7000 hours per year at full capacity. Altogether 95 200 000 bank m3 equal to 200 000 000 t overburden had to be removed to accomplish this lignite output. The largest BWE (Fig. 1) ever built is working in the Fortuna Mine, too. At a digging height of 51 m above crawler level, the total vertical reach in relation to the face conveyor level is 98 m by means of its conveying bridge and loading unit. The hourly output is 10 400 bank m3. Its weight in operation is 13 000 t, its wheel diameter 21.6 m, as high as a 7-storey building.

In underground mining coarse muck and large boulders lead to ineffective utilization of costly mining equipment, and extra expenses and delays caused by secondary blasting. Cost analysis in some Norwegian mines shows that these extra expenses may amount to 10% or more of total mine operating costs. A computer model has been developed for sensitivity analysis of underground longhole stope blasting. The basic idea of the model is : When increasing the blasting energy input and fragmentation costs, the fragmentation will be better. This will lead to cost savings for loading, hauling, secondary blasting and primary crushing. The blasting design giving the lowest overall costs will indicate the optimal practice. The model has been used with data from several underground operations in Norway. An example run with typical costs shows that the costs for drilling, blasting and secondary blasting are the most significant parameters in the optimization process.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the influence of atmospheric pressure changes on methane gas migration through mine seals at a mine site located in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The mine gained access to a coal reserve through part of an abandoned mine and constructed nine seals to isolate the extensive old workings from the active mine area. Underground problems were experienced when atmospheric pressure fell, causing methane gas to migrate around the seals and into the active workings. During mining operations, methane gas levels exceeded legal limits and coal production was halted until the ventilation system could be improved. When mining resumed with increased air flow, methane gas concentrations occasionally exceeded the legal limits and production had to be halted until the methane level fell within the mandated limit. To assist the ventilation system, a pressure relief borehole located in the abandoned workings near the mine seals was proposed. Preliminary estimates by a gob gas simulator (computer model) suggested that a 0.76 m (2.5 ft) diameter pressure relief borehole with an exhaust fan would be necessary to remove enough methane from the abandoned area so that the ventilation system could dilute the gas in the active workings. However, by monitoring methane gas emissions and seal pressure, during periods of low atmospheric pressure, the amount of methane gas that migrated into the active mine workings was calculated. Researchers then determined that a relief borehole, 20.3 cm (8-in) with an exhaust fan could remove at least twice the maximum measured volume of migrating methane gas. Because gas concentrations in the abandoned workings could potentially reach explosive limits, it was proposed that the mine eliminate the exhaust fan. Installation of the recommended borehole and enlarging two other ventilation boreholes located in the abandoned area reduced methane gas leakage through the seals by at least 63%.

A 15 km water supply tunnel is being constructed in Buenos Aires, Argentinata expand the capacity of the existing system. Two 4.3 meter diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunneling machines operating at times from the same shaft on a congested work site and advancing through sedimentary deposits underlying this wonderful city pose interesting challenges. As of January 1999approximately 50% of the tunnel has been excavated. Combined machine production rates of 1026 m/month have been achieved. Presentations made in prior proceedings can be referenced for details of the overall Project scope and for details of the tendering process. The purpose of this paper is to compliment those presentations by addressing now the execution of the work.

INTRODTUCTION The use of spiral concentrators for processing fine coal particles is an old idea that has recently gained acceptance in the 11.S. coal industry. It was not onti1 the Australian Minerals Industry developed a spiral concentrator specifically for separating coal from ash in the latter 1970's and early 1980's that spiral concentrators were seriously considered as viable equipment for processing fine coal. The Wright Coal Spiral was introduced in 1980, the Mineral Deposits Limited Mark 10 Coal Spiral was introduced in 1982, and the Vickers Wyong Coal Spiral was introduced in the latter part of 1984. Each spiral design was different and utilized constant profile troughs, constant pitch troughs, compound profile troughs, and various splitter arrangements. Mineral Deposits Limited has combined the best features of the compound profile trough and constant pitch trough with critically-placed splitters to develop the MDL LD4 spiral concentrator which is a truly efficient coal washing spiral. This spiral concentrator was introduced into the U.S. Coal Industry in 1987. Recently, Mineral Engineering Technology of the United Kingdom and Multotec of South Africa have introduced their own coal spiral designs. Spiral concentrators were first installed in fine coal processing circuits in the Australian, South African, and Canadian Coal Industries in the early 1980's and in the U.S. Coal Industry in 1985. SPIRAL CONCENTRATOR SEPARATION PROCESS The separation process that occurs within the spiral concentrator trough is very complex, as it is a combination of three gravity separation processes. When the coal slurry first enters the spiral trough, each coal and ash particle and the water is subjected to centrifugal forces. These forces cause the water, light coal particles, fine heavy ash particles, and medium middlings particles to the outer vertical portion of the spiral trough. The coarse ash particles and the coarse middling particles remain on the inside of the spiral trough. The center or transitional area of the trough contains a mixture of middlings particles and near-gravity material that is present in the slurry, as shown in Figure 1. At the same time the coal and ash particles are suhjected to centrifugal forces, the trough design (both profile and pitch) causes the particles to be subjected to flowing film and stratified bed separations. The combination of these three separations, whose efficiency is dictated by the spiral troogh design, will effect the separation of the lighter coal particles from the heavier ash and middlings particles. As the slurry flows down the spiral, the profile and pitch design of the trough will counteract the centrifugal forces on the fine, heavy ash particles and fine middlings particles and cause them to migrate from the vertical portion of the trough to the center or inner portion of the trough. At the same time, any heavy particles trapped in the transitional area of the trough will be forced to migrate to the inner edge of the trough and any coal particles will be forced to migrate to the outer edge of the trough. SPIRAL SPLI'TTEP ARRANGEMENT The critical placement of splitters along the inner edge of the trough for removal of the heavy ash particles as the slurry flows down the trough further enhances the separation of the coal particles. At the bottom of the spiral trough are product splitters arranged to make a final separation of the slurry stream into clean coal, middlings, and refuse products.

Many solids processes that look feasible on paper or even in pilot studies become disasters in full scale. Changes in solids flow characteristics from pilot scale to full scale because of larger so lids contact pressures, thermal shocks or unforeseen temperature excursions often cause full scale solids flow problems not encountered in the laboratory or pilot studies. Fortunately, proper applications of solids flow principals and solids flow property measurement at full scale conditions can anticipate the problems and thus provide an accurate basis for full scale design or existing plant modifications.

This paper discusses the effects of seam inclination and lateral stresses on the stress distribution in pillars in inclined coal seams. The average pillar stress is a function of the overburden weight, the mine depth, the effective extraction ratio and the angle of seam inclination. Normal and shear stresses in the pillar are computed by numerical modeling. In medium dipping seams, leaving a pillar with its axis normal to the stratification causes a shearing stress concentration in the top and bottom corners of the pillar. This results in the pillar possibly becoming less stable in comparison to pillars in horizontal coal seams. Therefore, to reduce the stresses, it may be necessary to leave the pillar at an angle of b deviated from the normal axis to stratification. A mathematically approximate formula for determining b is proposed, and the results are confirmed by numerical modeling.

"With seven new applications for plans of work for exploration in the international Seabed Area approved by the Council during its twentieth session of the International Seabed Authority, 26 total approvals have been made by the Council up to date. Among them, three contracts were made with COMRA. On 8 August 2014, China Minmetals Corporation submitted another application to the Authority for approval of a plan of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area, which is also sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.China is one of the main contributors to the international seabed regime. The Presentation will describe China’s activities in the Area, such as exploration, technology development, environmental protection and policy making.JIAOLONG is a submersible with capacity of 7000 meters. JIAOLONG’s sea trials were carefully made in 4 years, from 2009 through 2012 and it successfully dove to a depth of 7062m in June 2012 at Mariana trench. A so called "Test Application Phase" started thereafter, and is planned to last for 3-4 years. Two cruises and 4 legs have already been made since then. A wide-range of findings were obtained during dives in South China Sea, and in COMRA’s Exploration Contract Areas for polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. This presentation will reveal the colorful findings."

Coal bumps have presented serious mining problems in the U.S. throughout the 20th Century. Fatalities and injuries have resulted when these destructive events occur at the working face. Persistent bump problems can result in abandonment of large reserves or lead to premature mine closure. Through the years, a1ternative techniques such as artificial supports, extraction sequencing, destressing, pillar design changes and specific pi1lar retreat practices have been successful1y imp1emented to mitigate coal mine bumps. Several techniques have evolved for room-and-pi1lar operations that control the way the roof rock breaks, regulating the manner in which stresses are redistributed in the mined section. Special mine layouts employed in longwall mines have also proved to be successful in safely redistributing or containing excessive loadings. However, with ever increasing production rates, greater overburdens and new mining systems, the need to evolve even more effective bump control designs will continue to challenge the U.S. coal mine industry.

The basic principle of this separation method was already defined in the middle of the nineteenth century. However, a change over for the treatment of minerals has followed from the construction of proper machines i.e. airjigs and airtables as late as in the twenties and thirties of this century. The main application of this technology was subsequently found in coal processing and reached quite a great dimension in the two following decades. The number of applications of this method in mineral dressing plants decreased rapidly and has almost vanished in the fifties in favour of wet concentration procedures. It has been for a long period as long as up to the eighties that no more consideration was taken for applying dry gravity separation in the field of mineral processing also due to the successful introduction of flotation. Due to the fact that labour cost was increasing remarkably within the past period after the end of World War II also the economic conditions in the agricultural sector became more though. As a result there came up a great demand for harvesting machines. Since agricultural products can only be processed by dry methods in a prevailing number, highly developed machines were introduced for the dry processing of food and feed stuff.
