INTRODUCTION Several recent estimates have predicted that the extent of underground tunneling in the future will far surpass past records. It is also emphasized that the expected increase depends largely on the cost of tunneling and hence every effort should be made to reduce this price. The largest items of expense in some tunneling programs are not related to the technical problems encountered but rather the human factors involved in contracting and executing the project. In order to examine the mutual interactions between the groups involved in tunnel programs, the Engineering Foundation sponsored a conference on "Owner-Engineer-Contractor Relations in Tunneling", July 12-16, 1971 at Deerfield, Massachusetts. The meeting was cosponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America and the Construction Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The seminar was attended by representatives of contractors, owners, and engineers who drafted and approved a set of recommendations based on the ideas generated during the discussions. It was also suggested that the resulting document be given as wide publicity as possible amongst the underground construction community. The First Annual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference provides an excellent forum for this presentation.

Utilizing automation is one way to improve competitiveness. Roof and rib bolting in underground coal mines has not changed significantly for more than 40 years. Most roof bolting is still a largely manual process involving high levels of staff carrying out repetitive work. Roof bolting statistically has one of the highest levels of underground accidents, including finger, hand, and arm injuries. Operators are exposed to falling objects and becoming entangled in roof bolting apparatus while roughly moving awkward 6-ft drill steels and roof bolts. It is estimated that over 25 million roof bolts are installed annually in the U.S. underground coal market with well over 1,500 operators involved in roof bolting on a day-to-day basis. Recently electrohydraulic roof bolting rigs have been installed to offer partial automation of the drilling cycle and the bolting cycle. The next stage is to provide a storage and loading system to allow full automation of fullcolumn resin roof bolts. This paper reviews the latest electrohydraulic roof bolting equipment and discusses the testing of a fully automated drill rig. Full electronic control allows each step of the roof bolting process to be recorded, providing a digital record of each installation, including hole depth, spin time, gel time, torque, and cycle time. Other benefits include monitoring of water pressure and flow, used to prevent blocked drill steels as well as digital fault finding. A fully automated roof bolting machine greatly improves operator safety and gives high-quality repeatable roof bolting with reduced cycle times.

The 191 million acres of public lands that are managed as National Forest System Lands contain extensive geologic habitat for over 40 industrial minerals. The Forest Service actively encourages exploration for and development of industrial mineral deposits within the National Forests. However, due to competing interests, the Forest Service may not always be able to accommodate industry needs. In order to successfully compete with ever-increasing demands for all resources in the 1990's, industry needs to become more active in public involvement and education and in communicating its contributions and needs to public land managers.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. The problem of estimating separation characteristics by utilizing mass distributions of feed and products is considered. The separation characteristics include mass yield and partition curve. The cases of mass balance and partition functions balance are identified. The developed techniques can handle the cases of two- and three-product separation. Actual data are utilized to demonstrate the proposed techniques.

Understanding aquifer properties in surface mine backfill is essential for managing the groundwater flow system as well as controlling the formation and discharge of acid urine drainage. Slug tests (injection and withdrawal) performed on wells in mine spoil may yield two distinctly different response characteristics. One type of response is indicative of a porous media system. The second type of response indicates the presence of a pseudokarst system. The presence of voids or conduits in the backfill is indicated by an almost instantaneous partial recovery of the water level displacement. This rapid recovery is turbulent flow and cannot be analyzed by conventional (Darcian) methods. The turbulent flow may cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be less than the actual values. The slug dissipation surface area created by the voids contiguous to the test well add to the known dissipation surface area of the screened interval. This can cause the calculated hydraulic conductivity to be greater than the actual hydraulic conductivity or the aquifer to appear more permeable. Whenever analyzing data from aquifer tests in mine spoil, these potential problems must be kept in mind. In spite of the problems encountered during slug testing of spoil, the aquifer hydraulic parameters derived and the slug responses observed remain useful in the hydrologic characterization of a mine site.

The dilemma of a numerical analyst not only concerns the problem of modelling the non-linear behaviour of intact rock, but also the non- linearity contributed by structural discontinuities. In this light, it is the intention of this paper to examine some aspects of the non-homogenity and structural discontinuities of rock and incorporate this behaviour into boundary element numerical solution. Non-homogeneous material is considered piecewise, thus homogeneous and is modelled by using sub-regions. The Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion is employed to model the non-linear behaviour of the major discontinuities. A computer program is developed based on the procedure for combining the direct boundary element method and the displacement discontinuity method. A linear element type is employed in the formulation of numerical solution. The computer program is used to study the stress distribution in a gold mine.

"Since entering the new century, China’s coal industry has witnessed the rapid development, and provided a reliable energy supply for the national economic and social development. But after the “golden decade” of rapid development, the coal industry now is facing overcapacity, low industrial concentration and production efficiency, high pressure of production safety and environmental protection and other prominent issues. Based on defining the connotation of highly-efficient recovery of coal resources, this paper established the relevant 8 indicators to reflect the highly-efficient recovery level of coal resources, summarized the present situation of China's coal resources recovery and the main problems, analyzed the development environment of China's coal industry under the new situation, and finally put forward the strategic measures to promote highly-efficient recovery of coal resources in China.1. Background Coal is the main energy in China. Since entering the new century, China's coal industry has made significant progress, and the level of production safety, resource recovery rate and mining mechanization increased significantly, which provided a reliable energy supply for the rapid development of the national economy. However, due to the changes of China's economic environment, slow growth of energy demand and other factors, some prominent contradictions in the coal industry have significantly restricted the healthy development of the industry. The first problem is serious overcapacity. In the past few years, 16 industries including coal, electric power, chemical and others have invested in coal mines. It is reported (Han 2016) that only during the nine years from 2005 to 2014, the fixed assets of coal industry increased totally more than 3.3 trillion RMB, which brought a large number of production capacity. Affected by the slowdown of economic growth and energy structure adjustment, Chinese coal demand has reached the peak platform and caused the overcapacity of coal supply, so shutting down the backward capacity is the most important task in the future. The second problem is the low efficiency of coal production. There are about 4.3 million coal mine workers in China, and the annual coal production per capita is less than 900 tons, while it was reported (EIA 2016) that the annual production per capita in the United States is more than 10 thousand tons. The third problem is that the green coal resources are not rich. Among the 1.53 trillion tons proven reserves, only about one third are green coal resources in accordance with the principle of ""safety, technology, environment and economy"". The coal resources with high quality and easily mining conditions are not abundant."

Dissolution within Permian evaporites of the Delaware basin has created extreme lateral geologic and physical property inhomogeneity within and above the evaporites. Discriminating a sulfur deposit's geophysical signature from other variances is difficult. This is particularly true of porosity-dependent gravity and electrical methods. However, other techniques that detect alteration of strata above sulfur deposits may be applicable individually or in combination with other types of data. Relationships between sulfur deposits and gravity, magnetic, gamma radiation, spontaneous potential, and soil geochemical measurements are illustrated by data from several Delaware basin geophysical and geochemical surveys.

A current challenge faced by the mining industry is solving the integrated transition mine problem (TMP) that maximizes the net present value (NPV). This study aims to develop an optimization framework capable of solving the TMP. The problem is NP-hard and therefore computationally intractable. Three ad hoc approaches – Exact solution, Benders’ decomposition, and Benders’ decomposition with Bienstock-Zuckerberg (BZ) algorithm – are compared for different scheduling periods. The TMP is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model, implemented in Python, and solved with the Gurobi optimizer. The results showed that Bender's decomposition with the BZ algorithm outperforms the other approaches in execution time, computational cost, and feasibility to address large problems in exchange for a marginal cost in the quality of the NPV obtained. In addition, the probability of finding the optimal point of transition is higher regardless of the number of feasible crown pillar locations evaluated. This is achieved through the optimality cuts proposed in the algorithm.

Alaska's Arctic Slope lies between the Brooks Range and Beaufort Sea and is a region about the size of Nebraska. It has some of Alaska's richest hydrocarbon deposits. In addition to containing petroleum and natural gas. Much of the area west from the Colville River has low-sulfur coal deposits which are shallow enough for surface mining. Developing those resources will require a firm and realistic' commitment to protecting and rehabilitating the natural habitats. Balancing such a commitment with economic constraints in a practical sense requires knowledge of the environment and its associated biological components, i.e. the soil/water-plant-animal relationships.

Underground rock drilling has gone through intense development during the last 25 years. Mechanization and hydraulics have greatly increased the efficiency of drilling and improved the environment of the drill operator. As the total economy has become more and more important, the development has resulted in greater overall economy in drilling. The latest evolution step is computerization of drilling equipment. Computerization has been applied to tunnelling jumbos, long- hole drilling rigs and bolting rigs. With today's technology computerization is the natural way to increase capacity and productivity of the drilling process. However, it is still impractical to implement total "robotic" drilling. In computerized drilling the operator's role continues to be vital in controlling the drilling process and in analyzing the effect of individual parameters on the whole excavation process. Today this is called "CAD" - Computer Aided Drilling.

Introduction This article discusses the unique range of properties of platinum and its applications as a high technology metal. World reserves of this strategic and precious metal are confined mostly to South Africa and, to a far lesser extent, the Soviet Union. An analysis is given of past trends in world platinum output. The timepath is computed for the world platinum output rate, covering a period of more than 350 years. This is based on the postulate that the industrial conversion of a virgin resource progresses according to a Sigmoid curve. This computation is performed by means of a nonlinear, three-stage optimization model employing a multiform Sigmoid function. Finally, the price dynamics are examined. Platinum is the most important of the group of the platinum metals to which it gives its name. Other platinum group metals are iridium, osmium, palladium, rhodium, and rhutenium. The metals occur in nature in close association and are chemically very similar to each other. Three members of the group - platinum, iridium, and osmium - are the heaviest metals known to man. Platinum's density is 11% heavier than gold and about twice the weight of the same volume of silver or lead. Properties Platinum is a typical grayish-white metal. Its special properties were known 1000 years ago to the American Indian craftsmen of what is now Ecuador and Colombia. From those distant beginnings, platinum is now firmly established as the most precious and distinctive metallic element known to mankind. It is shown in Table 1, platinum has a unique wide range of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties including high melting point, resistance to chemical attack, high catalytic activity, mechanical strength, and malleability. These properties make it indispensable for use in many industries. Application Platinum is first and foremost a high technology metal. During the last few decades, fertile scientific minds searched for and developed widespread cost-effective uses for this precious metal. Its unique properties render it irreplaceable in many key industrial processes. Important major fields of application include: • protection of man's natural environment (pollution control), • defense, • fuel production, • fertilizer manufacture, • glass and glass fiber manufacture, • pollution-free energy generation - replacement of nuclear and fuel operated power plants, • electronics, • dentistry, • medicine, and • jewelry. Besides these industrial markets, platinum is increasingly finding a place in investment portfolios around the world as investors switch from gold and silver holdings to this relatively scarce and strategic commodity. Platinum has a growing popularity among private investors. This is being accelerated by the predicted "big crash" of the US dollar and its associated weak currencies, which American financial analysts are expecting towards the end of the decade. Figure 1 shows the demand for platinum in various applications throughout the western world in 1986. The total demand amounted to 88.6 t (97.6 st) of which autocatalyst usage accounted for 32.8 t (36 st) or 37%, the biggest share. Catalytic converter technology is increasingly centered on rhodium-platinum three-way catalysts. These catalysts are able to deal with all three pollutants - carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides - in a single catalytic unit. Lateritization is a surface and near-surface process enhanced by a humid and warm climate and by good drainage. It closely follows the development of the regional landscape. The cyclic landscape development on the Guiana Shield is accompanied by a progressively thicker and more evolved laterite mantle the older, and hence in most instances the higher the planation level. The known, economically interesting bauxite and aluminous laterite eposits of the Shield are restricted to the remnants of the oldest of the Cainozoic planation levels (level I1 and 111).

Rock bolting as a method of support continues to increase with applications in many other industries in addition to mining. Nevertheless, with nearly 55,000,000 roof bolts installed in coal mines alone last year, this remains as the single greatest use. While bolts have frequently supported ground where conventional timbering could not, there are relatively few design criteria; and trial-and-error procedures prevail. Furthermore, development of suitable instrumentation that is simple to install and readout, sensitive, durable, reliable, safe and economical in evaluating the effectiveness of a bolt over long periods of time lags behind. Therefore, the pull test continues to be the most popular method of evaluating the applicability of a certain type of roof bolt under specific installation conditions. At Penn State in the Department of Mining, research has been conducted for a number of years to measure bleedoff in carefully controlled laboratory experiments as well as in underground investigations.1,2,3,4 Unfortunately, most of the instrumentation developed has been primarily suitable only for research purposes, not possessing all of the aforementioned characteristics desirable for routine underground use. Other groups also have met with restricted success. Therefore, while relatively crude, the torque wrench continues to remain as the most widely used load measuring device. While both field and laboratory tests continue to be conducted, analytical analyses are attempted to discover the more important design parameters in order that more efficient anchorage might be devised.

Most of the mines in Sweden are metal ore mines in hard rock and none of these mines are classed gassy because there is no methane emission. The risk of methane explosions in Swedish mines is therefore very small. Since the 1960?s, in Swedish mines, there has been a change from electric and pneumatic loaders and transport machines to diesel. Today in almost all Swedish underground mines diesels are used. One of the most common complaint from the underground mine- workers is the exhaust gases from the diesel-vehicles. This is a strong motive for attempts to assure a more comfortable environment. Another motive for a better efficiency of ventilation under ground is the increasing cost of energy for fans and for heating the air during winter. For the largest mine in Sweden, the Kiirunavaara Mine, 36% of the energy for ventilation is used for preheating the air during the seven months when the temperature is below zero. The air quantities used for ventilation are large. In table 1 a comparison of the ratio between yearly produced ore and waste rock and installed fresh 'air capacity is shown. [ ]

INTRODUCTION The Panna Maria Uranium Project is located in South Texas, between San Antonio and Corpus Cristi, approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Karnes City, Texas. The tailings disposal facilities are located immediately south of the mill area and the central portion of the west pit. The mine and mill drainage pond is located north of the tailings pond. Location of the facilities is shown in Figure 1. The tailings pond is a disposal area for mill process wastes and has a capacity for storage of approximately 9 million metric tons (10 million tons) of tailings. This capacity is adequate for approximately 10 years of milling at a maximum rate of 2,700 metric tons (3,000 tons) per day. The tailings disposal facilities were designed to essentially eliminate discharge of contaminated waters to preclude degradation of surface streams or ground water. Water levels in the ponds will be maintained. through reuse in the mill and by evaporation. WASTE CHARACTERISTICS The sources of waste that is stored in the tailings pond include runoff from the mill area and tailings from the mill processing. The tailings consist of a sand slime slurry; the percentage passing the No. 200 sieve varies depending on the ore material, and it is generally in the range of 10 to 25 percent. The tailings have a density of approximately 1.2 metric tons per cu m (75 lb per cu ft) and an average specific gravity of 2.55. The liquid effluent from the mill consists of waste solutions from the grinding, leaching, extraction, and washing circuits of the mill. These solutions have an initial pH of 1.5 to 2.0 and contain the remnants of the leaching agents used in the mill process, sulfates, some silica as the primary dissolved solid, and trace quantities of soluble metals. This liquid is discharged with the solids into the tailings pond and is diluted by rainfall and runoff from the tailings dam. Runoff from the mill area, drainage from the mine area, and de-oiled water from truck washing facilities is discharged into the mine and mill drainage pond. Runoff from the mill area drains approximately 28 hectares (70 acres) from offices, shops, the mill site, the ore pad, haul roads, and adjacent areas. Mine drainage is collected in the mine area and pumped to the mine and mill drainage pond.

The rapidly expanding, globally based mining industry provides many opportunities and challenges for the engineering construction business. This paper reviews some of the innovations that the industry is implementing to provide increased value in the design, construction, and successful start-up of new mine plant facilities. Approaches being taken to reduce installed-plant costs as well as related value-enhancement opportunities are discussed. Included are comments on new technology developments, use of automation and global communications networks, application of economic models as a project design tool, and management approaches being adopted to make the engineering construction process significantly more effective.

This paper uses a simple model to illustrate the fact, widely known to information theorists, that the covariogram represents only half the information in the data used to construct it. It suggests and illustrates methods of putting the other half to use in describing mineral deposits. It also identifies applications in which the phase information is not needed.

In this study, domestic molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) concentrate was roasted in a chamber furnace and then in a rotary kiln. The behavior of the roasting process was examined in both furnaces, and which type of furnace is more advantageous to use in mass production was investigated. It is theoretically possible to roast in a chamber furnace, but a major problem was observed when the amount of concentrate was increased in the chamber-furnace experiments. The problem was solved by using a rotary kiln. This study improves the understanding of the roasting of  MoS2 concentrate and presents a different perspective to the industry, showing that rotary kilns can also be used for roasting.
