The motion of grinding balls has been the subject of study since 191 9 when Davis published the first treatise on this subject. Subsequently came the notion that knowing mill power draft, using Bond equation or others, is sufficient to do an analysis of grinding. Next, population balance models provided accurate scale-up from small laboratory size mills to very large plant size mills. However, this success was not repeated when dealing with semiautogenous grinding mill. The study of charge motion with the discrete element method provides support and answers to such issues. Besides providing an accurate picture of charge motion in large mills, the method begs the investigator to study grate and pulp lifter equally critically with fluid dynamic principles. Hence, in recent years, the field of comminution in grinding mills is advancing on a firm footing.

An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

The stability of underground openings and mining systems is closely related to the in situ stress field. This paper presents a short discussion of the three-component borehole deformation gage and overcoring technique which the Bureau of Mines uses to measure in situ stresses, and a summary of stress data that the Bureau has gathered in the process of evaluating ground control problems. Specific ground control problems and stress distributions are discussed as examples.

Wetting agents used for heap leach gold applications would appear to have technical merit in aiding in recovering higher levels of precious metal. Many questions, however, remain as to whether they will function in practice, on what type of ore are they effective and if there are any negative affects associated with their use. A series of experiments are conducted at Bateman Labs, Sparks, Nevada, to determine under what conditions reagents of this type are useful. Carbon kinetics test work was also performed to determine if there are negative aspects associated with carbon loading with the use of these treatment chemicals. This paper outlines the results of these research evaluations, the general chemistry associated with action of wetting agents on leach ores and future work which is planned to further determine the viability of these products in the mining industry.

"Froth flotation is a process in which valuable minerals are separated from gangue minerals on the basis of surface wettabilities. It is a universally accepted process for the beneficiation of coal. The large amount of coal fines that have been generated from both mining and beneficiation processes has been reported as a chronic problem to both fine coal preparation and utilization as these fines contain a high amount of ash forming minerals. The current study investigated the potential application of Synthetic Bio-compatible Polymers as slime depressants in fine coal flotation for the possibility to enhance the combustible recovery and ash rejection. Raw coal samples containing 21% of ash-forming minerals were crushed, grinded and floated in the presence of Chitosan polymer. Flotation tests were carried out in D-12 Denver flotation cell with 1-Liter capacity. Flotation outcomes were studied as a function of polymer concentration. Box-Behnken factorial method was used for experimental design. Second order response functions were produced for ash% and combustible recovery. The results obtained from this study demonstrated positive influence of chitosan polymer on ash% and combustible recovery. Ash % was decreased by 3.32 % while an increase of 48.15 % in combustible recovery was observed when chitosan was introduced in the flotation process. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a widely used method of separating minerals by utilizing the difference between surface wettabilities [1], [2].Modern mechanized mining and ore handling operations produce large amounts of coal fines which in the past were not processed but discarded as waste[3]. Even though flotation is the best method of beneficiation for coal, it can be challenging in case of fine coals. In fine coals, slime coatings of colloidal mineral matter exist on the coal surface. These coatings render the coal hydrophilic, hence reducing flotation efficiency and recovery. Of late, different researches have been using biodegradable polymers to determine their feasibility in enhancing fine coal flotation efficiency[4].Naturally occurring and synthetic polymers, for example, polyacrylamide-based polymers, have been widely used in flotation as multifunctional reagents[5],[6],[7]. Hybrid polyacrylamide polymer has been successfully used as a depressant for ash forming minerals in fine coal flotation[3]. Recently, chitosan has been successfully used in flocculating quartz particles to produce faster settling rates of fine tailings [4]."

The dimensions and shape both airborne and bulk amphibole-asbestos fibers are different from those of both airborne and bulk of cleavage fragments of the amphiboles. These differences are related to the mineralogical properties unique to the habit of asbestos, including the fibrillar structure, small fibril widths and distinctive crystal-lographic faces of fibrils. Criteria for distinguishing amphi-bole cleavage fragments from amphibole-asbestos include mineralogical properties observable in bulk samples and the dimensions of particles collected on air filters. It would be it very helpful to the mining and mineral industry lf these properties were recognized in the regulation of asbestos.

Based on current sedimentation theory an on-line thickener model was developed and coupled with an extended Kalman Filter to obtain additional information such as the compression zone level and concentration, a corrected underflow concentration, the inventory, and some rheological information. The on-line model was installed and tested for robustness for periods up to three days in an industrial environment giving good results. Emphasis was given to signal processing and selecting the appropriate input variables for filtering. The analysis of the thickener from a phenomenlogical point of view provides for better operation, establishes the limiting operating conditions, and assists in the design of control strategies.

In spite of the importance of the presence of pyrite in the flotation of sulphide ores, not many studies have been made from the electrochemical point of view. It is generally recognized that the oxidation of sulphide minerals is one of the most Important factors among those which affect the floatability of sulphide minerals. The concept that the presence of oxygen is essential to the flotation of sulphide minerals is supported by numerous experimental results (1). The presence of oxygen in sulphide minerals- aqueous solution systems would affect the electrochemical behaviour of sulphide minerals and subsequently lead to more complicated reactions on the surface of sulphides. Actually some of the phenomena observed in sulphide flotation are deemed to be more appropriately explained from the electrochemical point of view. The author and co-workers have studied extensively the electrode reactions of pyrite and its significance in sulphide flotation. The results have been partly published elsewhere (2-7). In this paper, the author discusses the electrochemical nature of pyrite, and the three different phenomena observed in pyrite flotation: (1) Xanthate¬dixanthogen system on pyrite, (2) Flotation of complex sulphide ores containing pyrite and (3) Depressive mechanisms of pyrite with cyanide. The phenomenon which has been known as an iron contamination effect due to steel grinding media on sulphide flotation is also explained from the electrochemical aspect. However, this problem is not directly concerned with pyrite, and it will be discussed elsewhere (8).

INTRODUCTION The air flow in the mine ventilation network can be categorized in three ways: natural splitting, controlled splitting, and semi-controlled splitting. In natural splitting, the air flow in branches of a ventilation network apportions itself according to the aerodynamic resistance of the branches. In controlled splitting, a prescribed quantity of air is circulated through each branch. In semi-controlled splitting, flow in some branches is fixed to a desired quantity while in other branches it is split naturally. In practice, the mine ventilation networks present the latter two situations. Usually, the resistance of each branch in the network is known and the quantity of air in the working place is predetermined by safety considerations. If the number of branches whose airflow quantities are known is equal to or larger than the number of the fundamental meshes in the network, then the network becomes a controlled splitting network (Wang, 1982 a). Otherwise, it is a semi-controlled splitting network. If no booster fans are used in the network, the problem can be solved as either controlled or semi-controlled splitting networks in order to determine the main fan pressure and regulator size and location. All techniques are based on Kirchoff's flow and energy conservation laws and Atkinson's Equation. Booster fans can be used in controlled and semi-controlled splitting networks. It has been proven both theoretically and practically that using booster fans in these ventilation systems can improve flow distribution and reduce consumption of power (McPherson et al., 1985). The current techniques used in determination of booster fan location and size include simulation, linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. These techniques can be classified into two groups. The first group, including linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing techniques, deals with controlled flow networks. The second, simulation, can be applied to the handling of semi-controlled flow networks. Mathematically, the problem of controlled splitting networks can be solved more easily than that of semi-controlled splitting networks. This is because the controlled flow network can be formulated as a linear programming problem, for the solution of which there are several sophisticated algorithms. Moreover, the semi-controlled flow network is usually modeled through nonlinear programming, for which there are no universally applicable solutions. The procedure described by Wu and Topuz, 1986, can be used to convert a semi-controlled network to a controlled flow network, and the problem can then be easily solved by the techniques used for solution of a controlled flow network problem. In practice, a mine ventilation network may change from controlled splitting to semicontrolled splitting with advancement of mining. This dynamic nature of mine ventilation makes the problem more complicated and necessitates development of new solution procedures which will consider the overall economics of the system. CONTROLLED SPLITTING NETWORK The problem in controlled splitting networks with booster fans is to determine the operational characteristic of the main fans, and the location and size of booster fans and regulators. The objective is to satisfy the air flow rate requirement for each branch while minimizing consumption of energy. The techniques used for the controlled splitting network problem include linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. The results of a survey of 46 West Virginia coal samples, employing the Office of Coal Research-Band coal sewage treatment process, indicated that the Freeport coal and Bakerstown coal from Preston County, Pittsburgh coal from Harrison and Ohio County and the Sewickley coal from Monongalia County offer outstanding potential for water clarification. Oxidation, steam treatment and acid and base washing of coal generally resulted in small positive or negative changes to the water clarification capacities of the coal while the employment of prepared coal fractions resulted in more significant benefits. Of the coals tested, those fractions with high ash, high sulfur and low Btu generally possessed the highest adsorption capacities.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service, port construction, trans-shipment, and environmental control. The major problem is the shipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. This report reviews progress in slurry transportation research that has been done in Japan since the 1960s, when large-scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are focused on.

As part of the Unconventional Gas Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we are developing a model that allows for time-dependent tracking of the fluid front and flow pressures during the quasi-static or dynamic fracturing of jointed rocks. Application of the model is directed towards both short fast fractures (as in tailored pulse loading) and long hydraulically induced fractures (massive hydraulic fracturing). The thrust of this research is to determine crack extension characteristics due to specific joint systems and fluid properties and to correlate pumping records with crack behavior in jointed systems.

Methods to increase the gas penetration through sinter layers. In the field of agglomeration, sintering has gained importance, specially in Europe; in Best-Europe this trend will continue till the year 1980, since it is quite probable that in the blast furnace burdens with 50-60 sinter, 10-20 % pellets and 20-25 % ore lumps will be employed. In order to meet this demand for sinter, new sinter bands with reaction areas between 300-400 m2 will be constructed. Chemical and physical phenomena during the Suction-Draught-sinter process. Iron ore sintering is generally considered as a burning process where the material contains 90-95 % ash i.e. non-combustible ingredients. Sintering represents a heterogeneous exothermic reaction in which the chemical phenomena as combustion, calcination, hydration, reduction and oxydation are superposed by physical phenomena. The physical phenomena are devided into material transport and simultaniously occurring heat transport processes. The velocity of these combined physico-chemical reactions i.e. the change in the reaction site per unit time determine the efficiency of the sinter process. The gas permeability as an important criterion of heat transport during the Suction-Draught sinter process.

Various types of Tertiary (Miocene) lignite occurrences had been formed and alternated with volcano-sedimentary Bigadiç Formation in the field of study, which resides in the middle and eastern parts of Biga Peninsula. The focus of the study is to identify the geochemical and petrologic properties of coal occurrences and the formation mechanism of the deposits. A comparative study of the deposits will also be studied. Biga Peninsula is a very rich zone in terms of both metallic ores and industrial minerals. Most of the metallic deposits and industrial occurrences in the region have been known and mined throughout the history. This richness of the region is related to the volcanic and tectonic activities that have developed during different geological periods. These activities are the main reasons of weathering and alteration phenomenon.

Throughout recorded history, underground fires have plagued mining operations. Compared with other hazardous situations in underground mining, a fire can become a global problem by swiftly spreading deadly carbon monoxide and other products of combustion (POC's) throughout the whole mine, often without warning. Experience has shown that when fires are detected and located in their early stages, they are much easier to control and proper escape routes can be more intelligently selected. Recent advances in sensor and data communication technology have made reliable mine fire .detection system installations possible. Unlike building construction. in a mine, it is impractical to install detectors at every desired location. Abandoned workings and unsafe locations preclude sensor installations from both safety and economic standpoints. The net effect is that some fires are detected and located early while the location of others, even if detected early, remains unknown too long for effective evacuation and fire fighting.

Arizona's geologic history is complex, resulting in a diversity of rock types and earth materials, including those of commercial interest. Regional variations in geologic history gave rise to three geologic provinces and an inequitable distribution of both metallic and nonmetallic mineral wealth. The Colorado Plateau is largely composed of flat-lying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and late Cenozoic volcanic fields and sedimentary deposits. Associated resources include gypsum, halite, sylvite, clays, specialty sand, flagstone, volcanic products, and aggregate. The adjacent Transition Zone features a large expanse of Proterozoic rocks, economically important Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary materials. Nonmetallic resources in this province include facing and dimension stone, aggregate, decomposed granite, chrysotile asbestos, gypsum, clay, barite, fluorspar, zeolites, and limestone used for lime, cement, and railroad ballast. The Basin and Range Province has the most complex geologic history and, therefore, the most diverse assemblage of industrial mineral occurrences. These include halite, gypsum, clay, aggregate, decomposed granite, diatomite, zeolites, perlite, pumice, kyanite, limestone, marble, stone, and others. In addition, young stream deposits yield vast quantities of sand and gravel, Arizona's most economically important nonmetallic mineral commodity.

The effects of bacterial adaptation and partial replacement of leaching solution on the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions of a complex sulfidic gold ore were investigated. The ore was first concentrated by bulk sulfide flotation and the sulfide concentrate was treated by bioleaching using T. Ferrooxidans bacteria. The residues from bioleaching were treated by cyanidation to extract the gold and silver. Bacterial adaptation before bioleaching significantly increased the rate and extent of bioleaching reactions. Similarly, the daily partial replacement of leaching liquor enhanced to a great extent the leaching rate and in some cases up to ten fold increase was observed. Both bacterial adaptation and solution replacement increased the gold recovery by about 2-fold and that of silver by about 1.3-fold. In this work more than 95% of the gold and more than 98% of the silver could be recovered from the sulfidic gold ore, when bioleaching was used ahead of cyanidation compared with 18.3% and 52.3% by direct cyanidation.

The protection of groundwater resources is a growing issue on both the legislative front and within the private sector. At present, the legislative push is to establish within the Environmental Protection Agency a comprehensive research, development, and demonstration program relating to groundwater contamination and resources. It is evident that certain aspects of such legislation will be directed at the mining industry. Consequently, the mining industry must position itself to address the issues and concerns from a backdrop of facts and knowledge by developing an integrated hydrogeochemical model of the mining environment.
