The principal geological and mineralogical characteristics of Chilean porphyry copper deposits are described. Elevated contents of fine grained ore and gangue material may cause copper losses and pose problems or render useless the flotation process. Examples of chalcopyrite and bornite size distributions are given. The state of the art of mineralogical and mineral chemical characterization in Chile is evaluated permitting analyses to lm and nm level by lacking the regular use of direct surface analysis.

Grinding simulators are now widely available to assist in the selection of circuit operating conditions or flowsheet designs that yield a given product size distribution. These simulators do not inform of the impact of the grinding product size distribution on subsequent flotation stages. This paper presents a method to predict the effect of fineness of grind on a flotation bank operation. Application of the method is illustrated with data from two Canadian concentrators.

A methodology of subsidence prediction using the Distinct Element code UDEC has been developed as an alternative for subsidence modelling in the Southern Coalfield, New South Wales, Australia. The models have been validated by comparison with empirical results and observed caving behaviour. At this stage, modelling capability is limited to flat lying terrain. It is planned to apply the methodology to areas of high topographical relief to investigate the mechanics of valley closure.

A methodology is presented for the spreadsheet solution of separation processing networks. With the methodology developed, a spreadsheet grid is used to represent networks both with and without recycle loops. In this manner, network solutions are numerically approximated by spreadsheet grid solutions. The methodology was used to explore the ramifications of networks developed by the Chinese for tungsten and molybdenum processing Nonlinear stage-transfer functions for two-component sharp separations can be used.

Heap leaching requires containment and storage of cyanide solutions, the volume of which may increase dramatically following an extreme storm event or extended wet periods. This paper describes a computer operated solution storage model developed to assist in the management of these requirements. It results from the accumulative efforts of various Klohn Leonoff engineers working on a number of heap leach projects throughout the western United States for the past several years.

This paper discusses the use of a coalbed methane simulator that has been modified to account for the removal of grid blocks as a function of time to estimate gas emission and production for a variety of mine-associated problems. The specialized features of the simulator are presented. Example applications illustrate the models' use in estimating methane emission rates during mine roadway development, and estimation of longwall panel degasification by horizontal boreholes.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

"Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

"Froth flotation is a process in which valuable minerals are separated from gangue minerals on the basis of surface wettabilities. It is a universally accepted process for the beneficiation of coal. The large amount of coal fines that have been generated from both mining and beneficiation processes has been reported as a chronic problem to both fine coal preparation and utilization as these fines contain a high amount of ash forming minerals. The current study investigated the potential application of Synthetic Bio-compatible Polymers as slime depressants in fine coal flotation for the possibility to enhance the combustible recovery and ash rejection. Raw coal samples containing 21% of ash-forming minerals were crushed, grinded and floated in the presence of Chitosan polymer. Flotation tests were carried out in D-12 Denver flotation cell with 1-Liter capacity. Flotation outcomes were studied as a function of polymer concentration. Box-Behnken factorial method was used for experimental design. Second order response functions were produced for ash% and combustible recovery. The results obtained from this study demonstrated positive influence of chitosan polymer on ash% and combustible recovery. Ash % was decreased by 3.32 % while an increase of 48.15 % in combustible recovery was observed when chitosan was introduced in the flotation process. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a widely used method of separating minerals by utilizing the difference between surface wettabilities [1], [2].Modern mechanized mining and ore handling operations produce large amounts of coal fines which in the past were not processed but discarded as waste[3]. Even though flotation is the best method of beneficiation for coal, it can be challenging in case of fine coals. In fine coals, slime coatings of colloidal mineral matter exist on the coal surface. These coatings render the coal hydrophilic, hence reducing flotation efficiency and recovery. Of late, different researches have been using biodegradable polymers to determine their feasibility in enhancing fine coal flotation efficiency[4].Naturally occurring and synthetic polymers, for example, polyacrylamide-based polymers, have been widely used in flotation as multifunctional reagents[5],[6],[7]. Hybrid polyacrylamide polymer has been successfully used as a depressant for ash forming minerals in fine coal flotation[3]. Recently, chitosan has been successfully used in flocculating quartz particles to produce faster settling rates of fine tailings [4]."

The effectiveness of anaerobic in-situ biological treatment for the immobilization of selenium, molybdenum, and uranium in an alluvial aquifer was examined using long-term column tests. A series of organic substrate and nutrient combinations were tested to determine removal effectiveness, optimum supplement concentrations and ratios. Final column testing was conducted to determine the chemical stability of the treatment by-products/treatment compounds by dosing the columns continuously with elevated redox untreated alluvial groundwater.

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

Arsenic (As) removal behavior from Changgoon mine tailings was investigated using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) in well-controlled batch reactors by varying pulp density (0.5?4%, pH=1.8, temp=30oC), reaction initial pH (1.8?2.2, pulp density=0.5%, temp=30oC), and temperature (25?35oC, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8). The initial concentration of As in the mine tailings used for bioleaching tests was about 30000 ppm, and the size range of tailings used in this study was 63?74 µm. The reaction speed and initial cell concentration were fixed to 150 rpm and 107 cells/mL, respectively. To complement leaching experiments, pH, oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), and amount of ferrous/ferric ions in leachate were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses were also conducted for the samples before and after leaching to see if any morphological and compositional changes in tailings took place during leaching process. The As leaching efficiency increased with decreasing pulp density, decreasing pH, and increasing temperature in the presence of A. ferrooxidans. Specifically, no significant change in As removal rate was observed when pulp density d 2% while the removal rate dramatically decreased at pulp density of 4%. Regarding pH effect, As removal rate was much more enhanced at lower pHs (i.e., 1.8 and 2.0) compared to pH 2.2. Increasing temperature was observed to tend to enhance As removal rate, showing about 20% enhanced leaching rate under 35oC compared to 25oC and 30oC at the elapsed time of 5 days. The results for As removal behavior at different conditions (i.e., pH, temperature, pulp density) were consistent with the change in pH, ORP, and ferric ion concentration in leachate, showing greater removal rate at the condition with lower pH, and higher ORP and ferric ion concentration in leachate. Furthermore, decreasing removal efficiency was likely in part due to the extent of the formation of by-product (i.e., jarosite) of ferric ions.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast- moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.
