Asbestos is a broad term embracing a number of fibrous silicate minerals. These minerals look extremely fragile, yet their fibers have a tensile strength equal to that of piano wire. Chrysotile asbestos is the only mineral that can be woven into cloth, and its fibrous structure is, if anything, even more amazing than its remarkable ability to withstand heat. Because of its unique physical properties asbestos has achieved great industrial importance, and more than 3,000 current uses are known, ranging from use in the kitchen to use in space missiles. Because their minuscule fibers are eminently respirable, asbestos minerals have also found their way into the lungs of humans, where they apparently produce serious biological effects such as asbestosis and lung cancers. 1, 2,3 Because of both their usefulness and their hazardous properties, these minerals have attracted a good deal of attention from research workers during recent years. For example, the surface properties of asbestos minerals have been studied by many investigators. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 However, even for the important mineral chrysotile, the literature data are more or less conflicting. Pundsack4 measured a PZC (point of zero charge) of 10.1; Martinez and Zucker5 measured 11.8; Chwastiak reports 10.8-11.0; and Raddick measured three sepa-rate apparent PZCls at about pH 8.3, 10.0 and 10.9. More recently Trivedi8 reports 10.11. Naumann and Dresher9 have studied surface charge enhancement of chrysotile by metal ions, and describe how the mineral reacts with contaminantions. In the present paper, the mode of dissolution of magnesium and hydroxyl ion from asbestos minerals placed in water was studied by kinetic experiments involving rate at which these items leave the minerals. Also, some study was made of interaction between dissolved species.

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million. Deposits are global, said Barrick Gold's Smith. This means that the mineral industry, by necessity, is global. "Manufacturers have considerable freedom to decide exactly where they wish to produce whatever it is that they sell," he said. "What we sell, on the other hand, must be produced where nature chose to lay it down. The question is not so much, whether to go global, as when to do it and how to go about it." The timing of international expansion depends on external factors, often political, Smith said, and on internal ones that relate to the company's size and stage of development. "In deciding how to expand, a company is largely deciding how to adapt its existing business strategy to activity on the world stage," he said Barrick entered 1997 with 1.58 kt (51 million oz) of reserves, Smith said, annual production of 93.3 t (3 mil- lion oz) and cash flow of $463 million. Reserves in- creased 40% in 1996 and production will begin to rise again significantly in 1999. "We believe our fundamental strategy is responsible for our early development and subsequent success," he said. Barrick entered the gold-mining industry in 1983. Its corporate mandate was to create shareholder value, Smith said. From the beginning, the company took a different approach - businesslike, entrepreneurial, strategic and focused. "Many mining companies start out with a technical team and develop business and financial expertise thereafter," Smith said. "In 1983, Barrick had the business people, and then moved into mining." First, it acquired part interest in two small operations, one in Alaska and one in Ontario. Then, in 1984, it merged with Camflo Mines, which operated a low-cost underground operation in Quebec.

In recent years limited markets have been developed for fly ash, the dust removed from coal-burning powerplant stacks, but most of it is still dumped in spoils areas at a cost ranging from 20 cents to $1.75 per ton. Aside from this cost, the creation of huge spoils areas can present a considerable aesthetic problem. Since the present annual fly ash output of about 20 million tons will probably reach 30 million by 1970, and because satisfactory disposal areas are becoming more limited, markets for much larger quantities of the waste are needed to keep disposal costs from becoming a significant economic factor in coal-burning powerplant operation. Current stress on air-pollution control and beautification, plus the vital need for good powerplant economy, makes it imperative, therefore, that coal producers and consumers expand markets and develop new applications for fly ash. Markets for established uses can be increased by making a greater effort to sell fly ash. New large tonnage markets for fly ash should be sought via more intensive, coordinated research. The economics of fly ash utilization underscores the vital role that must be played by research. To be competitive with other products, processes for the conversion of fly ash into marketable materials face difficulty in regard to two important economic factors--transportation cost and product utility--the other economic factors are favorable. Raw material costs of fly ash, for example, are quite attractive, and supply is no problem because there are many coal-burning powerplants in operation and many more are planned. Demand for products made from fly ash will grow if their utility is established and a good sales program is initiated. The major problems then are transporta¬tion costs and development of useful products.

More than 80 million metric tons of fly ash is produced annually in the U.S. as coal combustion by-product. Fly ash can be converted to value-added products if unburned carbon is reduced to less than 2.5%. However, most of fly ash is currently landfilled as waste due to lack of efficient purification technologies to separate unburned carbon from fly ash. A rotary triboelectrostatic separator has been developed and patented recently at the University of Kentucky with unique features. Several fly ash samples have been used to understand the effects of major process parameters on the separation performance. The results show that compared to existing triboelectrostatic separators, the rotary triboelectrostatic separator has significant advantages in particle charging efficiency, solids throughput, separation efficiency, applicable particle size range. When overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in openpit coal mines, the use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play. However, stability in the highwalls is always a major safety concern during such mining. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that highwall mining operators follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

Laboratory leaching experiments were conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of acidic solutions of thiourea, CS(NH2)2, for dissolving gold from finely disseminated gold ores. The ore tested was from the Chipmunk ore body of the Northumberland mining district in Nye County, Nevada, USA. Extractions of up to 90% were attained from the ore. Extraction was shown to be dependent on thiourea concentration, ferric sulfate oxidant concentration, acid concentration, and leaching time. Optimum conditions were an ambient temperature leach near pH 1.0 utilizing 100 to 200 kg/ton thiourea and 50 kg/ton ferric sulfate for 8 to 24 hours.

Many large (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to conventional flotation concentration using air as the flotation gas medium. Over the past five years Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat refractory ores and resources of this type at its Lone Tree and Twin Creeks mines. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation ..:hemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2 TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

The sixth survey on the mining industry by Comann Associates provided data for entry-level and midlevel engineers as well as executive officers. Average 1989 compensation - base salary and anticipated bonus - for chief mining executive officers or chief mining operating officers: $237,943. This is an increase of 20% over the results of the last survey, on 1985 compensation. The latest survey also showed that bonuses for chief mining executive officers averaged 33% of base salary. Average 1989 compensation for chief executive or chief operating officers at mining operations with under $50 million in gross sales, $148,638; at mining operation with more than $50 million in gross sales, $275,141. The survey showed that these officers averaged 14 years employment with their present company, had five years in their present position, and had an average age of 54.

Atkinson's resistance square law is the cornerstone equation for traditional expression of energy losses in mine ventilation engineering. But the nomenclature for the various forms of energy losses are often confused for one another, misapplied or misinterpreted. These forms of energy were re-examined from thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic perspectives. Resultant expressions showed that both incompressible and compressible flow regimes in underground mines can easily be accommodated. Given the well-known three major energy forms, which are equivalent to one another but numerically unequal, corresponding equations to Atkinson's (pressure loss) for headloss and workloss were derived. The thermodynamic weight relational resistance ([w] s2/m5) associated with energy per unit weight (headloss) was dimensionalized for the first time. Also, normalized Atkinson-like equations for headlosses and worklosses were derived to ease direct computations in mine ventilation practice.

The advent of solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) technology for recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has extended the operational lives of many historic mines in the western United States, and made many other orebodies economically viable worldwide. Many of these operations are mature and face closure within the next decade, depending on market conditions. Closure of a large copper heap leach operation has not been undertaken, and differs in some important chemical respects from closure of gold leach pads. Challenges for closure include prediction of solution chemistry and draindown characteristics, determining the benefit of cover placement in semi-arid climates and evaluation of solution management strategies once the economics of copper recovery are no longer favorable. This paper discusses issues pertinent to copper heap closure in semi-arid and arid climates, and strategies for their management.

The manipulators possibly used in underground mining must deal with unpredictable obstacle while keeping certain positions and orientations of end effector, and in some cases, are required to possess redundant joints in order to be more flexible. This kind of manipulators might be fitted with jumbo drill or platform as auxiliary to potentially deal with some utility works in versatile way, such as installing rock bolts, guniting, blasting, charging, surveys and measuring work, etc.. This paper describes numerical procedures of performing inverse kinematic problems for redundant manipulators .The procedures, based on the generalized pseudoinverse of Jacobian matrix, are developed to lead to kinematic solution at both singularity and ill conditioning, and to guarantee continuous sequence of positions of the end effect or. Furthermore, the solution to optimization and obstacle avoidance is investigated. A numerical example is shown to illustrate the approach.

From 1991 through 1995, 44 miners out of a total workforce of less than 2,000 were fatally injured in the stone industry. Of these, 12 occurred at underground mining operations with nine deaths resulting from roof or rib falls. A safer environment can be achieved by evaluating the nature of the hazardous ground and by developing more efficient and effective ground-control strategies. Roof and rib conditions were observed and assessed in 33 underground stone mines in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Fig. 1). Hazard assessment indicated that the ground failures that occurred under moderate to substantial overburden, i.e., >30 m (100 ft), were caused by stress concentrations and geologic structures. Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In this study, the flotation response of silver, from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high-acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (AgCu) 2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron, which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Cement production involves the processing of raw materials that contain - Si02, A1203, Fe203, CaO, MgO, LOI (loss of ignition), S03, K20, Na2O, Ti02, P2055 and Cl- to produce the synthetic mineral mixture called "clinker". The use of other additives - sandstone, flyash, iron ore, and clay - is also mandatory in order to achieve the optimum blending requirements of cement. However, the use of these additives needs to be minimized due to their significantly higher costs ($/Ton). This paper presents a mixed integer programming (MIP)-based optimum quarry scheduling algorithm, which is used to generate quarry plans, satisfying geometric and production capacity constraints while providing minimum cost/optimum blend of raw materials mix to a cement plant. The benefits of this new methodology are demonstrated on a case study.

Guidelines are presented for the selection, handling and regeneration of activated carbon used in gold recovery operations. The guidelines are based on Calgon Carbon Corporation's own investigations and experience gained in working with gold mine operators all over the world. Gold adsorption rate and adsorption capacity are shown to be independent variables thereby requiring testing of both properties when selecting activated carbon. Means of measuring these properties are provided. Historical activity tests on activated carbon are shown to be minimally useful in selecting carbon for gold recovery. Proper thermal regeneration techniques to maximize recovery of adsorption rate without weakening the carbon structure are suggested. Simple positive means of measuring efficiency of regeneration are presented. The subject of hardness measurement as a predictor of "in process" abrasion is discussed. The cost/benefit issue of carbon activity level is addressed.

The objective of this study was to produce coal dusts for laboratory research that are similar to mine airborne dusts in chemical, mineral, and physical characteristics. In this investigation, dusts produced in laboratory comminution equipment were compared with continuous-miner-generated dust for similarity in physical characteristics. Mining-generated dust (MGD) and bulk coal samples were first collected from an underground mining operation. The bulk samples were then processed in the laboratory for size reduction in various comminution devices. These laboratory-generated dust (LGD) samples were subjected to size and microscopic analyses. Physical properties of the dust particles were studied on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A numerical shape coordinate system (SCS) was also developed and applied to 300 particles from each sample. Statistical analysis was then performed on the collected data and characteristics of the MGD and LGD samples were compared.

The Disjunctive Kriging (DK) procedure was developed to estimate ore recovery figures within a deposit/ domain from limited diamond drill hole (DDH) core assay data taken at the exploration stage. Local recovery figures include minable ore tonnage and ore grades within relatively small areas such as stopes or small panels on a pit bench, for a given cut-off grade. The grade and tonnage should be computed based on the true selective mining units, that is, the average grade distribution of selective mining units within a panel. Local recovery figures are critical information for economic and engineering feasibility studies before mine development, as well as for short-term mine planning for operating mines. This kind of information can be provided only by non-linear geostatistical methods including DK and the Multivariate Gaussian Approach (MG) (Journel, 2, Parker, et al, 5).

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent called UNR 811A. The reagent is marketed by Cherokee Chemical Co., Inc. A summary of the bench tests comparing several different reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and results are presented. The plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, potential cost savings are discussed.
